Intel sources: Video from Benghazi attack debunks administration claim about protests

posted at 1:21 pm on October 12, 2012 by Mary Katharine Ham

I can heartily recommend everything Eli Lake of Newsweek has written on the Benghazi attack. He’s been all over this story from day one and has great sources. Today, he reports that the FBI and administration are examining closed-circuit video from the Benghazi compound at the time of the attack along with video from an overhead surveillance drone.

They’re hoping to identify known jihadists among the perpetrators, but Lake reports the tapes have already made one thing clear. There was no protest at the Benghazi consulate that day:

Video footage from the United States consulate in Benghazi, Libya, taken the night of the Sept. 11 anniversary attacks, shows an organized group of armed men attacking the compound, according to two U.S. intelligence officials who have seen the footage and are involved in the ongoing investigation. The footage, which was recovered from the site last week by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, offers some of the most tangible evidence yet that a military-style assault took place, according to these officials…

The videos could also play into an expanding investigation by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform that is looking at whether security steps could have been taken that would have saved the life of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans killed that day. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who is one of the Republicans leading the House investigation, says he hasn’t been given the footage.

In addition to the footage from the consulate cameras, the U.S. government is also poring over video taken from an overhead U.S. surveillance drone that arrived for the final hour of the night battle at the consulate compound and nearby annex.

Video from the compound’s cameras debunk the initial line from the Obama administration that there was a protest in front of the consulate on the night of the attacks, according to one of the U.S. intelligence officials who has seen the footage, and a senior Obama administration official familiar with what they show.

The FBI just collected this footage from the site last week, almost a month after the attack. I’ll send you over to read the rest.

Flashback: The Washington Post reviews the changing statements from the administration on the Benghazi attack as it went from spontaneous video-inspired melee to admission of a coordinated terrorist attack.

CNN presented Stephanie Cutter with a montage of many of those statements Thursday, starting at about 1:30, below:

And yet Vice President Joe Biden and Obama campaign mouthpieces Cutter and Ben Labolt have said in the past day that those changes in story were simply a result of changing intelligence, given swiftly and forthrightly to the American people, despite copious reporting to the contrary.

Campaign manager Jim Messina doubled down on that specious defense last night while attempting to defend Biden’s erroneous statement on Benghazi security requests, which Ed covered here.

Update: TPM’s Evan McMorris-Santoro caught up with Obama campaign manager Jim Messina after the debate and asked him about Biden’s Libya answer as to whether the administration was asked for more security.

“We have been honest with the American people repeatedly on what we knew, when we knew it and we’ll get the facts and make sure if there’s things we need to improve in the future, thats what we’ll do,” he said.

A couple of exit quotations (Allahpundit™) from security forces in Libya, from Thursday’s hearings, which Biden was apparently unable to watch:

“All of us at post were in sync that we wanted these resources,” the top regional security officer in Libya over the summer, Eric Nordstrom, testified. “In those conversations, I was specifically told [by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Charlene Lamb] ‘You cannot request an SST extension.’ I determined I was told that because there would be too much political cost. We went ahead and requested it anyway.”

Nordstrom was so critical of the State Department’s reluctance to respond to his calls for more security that he said, “For me, the Taliban is on the inside of the building.”

Another one:

“We felt great frustration that those requests were ignored or just never met,” testified Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, a Utah National Guardsman who was leading a security team in Libya until August.

Nordstrom again:

“Once the first team of [temporary personnel] expired, there was a complete and total lack of planning for what was going to happen next,” he said. “There was no plan, there was just hope that everything would get better.”

And, Wood again:

“It was instantly recognizable as a terrorist attack. We almost expected the attack to come. It was a matter of time,” Wood said. “[Al Qaeda's] presence grows there every day. They are certainly more established there than we are.”

Now, investigators and lawmakers will be able to go to the tape on that.

This isn’t surprising considering Barry didn’t attend intelligence briefings. Biden was probably busy jamming his finger into the chest of a hair-reconstruction surgeon, demanding he do something about the scar on Biden’s head that forced him to grow his hair long in the back like a mullet.

The reason for the cover up is that the admin chose not to beef up security since they were all in for the “arab spring” narrative and didn’t want the need to beef up security to be used against them politically nor to upset muslim sensitivities overseas. Of course it failed and four Americans died so now the cover-up. But damn that pesky truth, they keep changing their stories and no one is stepping forward to take the bullet and accept all blame so they start throwing anyone or any agency under the bus. This is not going to play well come November for it just showcases the weakness that is this administration. And with ol’ Joe’s performance last night, it just further cements the idea that this president and his staff are nothing but a bunch of conceited dilettantes who are incapable of viewing the world as it is but view it how they wish it was if everyone would just listen to them and do as they say.

SWalker on October 12, 2012 at 1:26 PM

And that is the crux of the problem for the rat-eared coward and getting worse….. credibility. Americans want to trust their leaders and day-after-day this administration is less trustworthy. And the more of these lies the more it is clear that this is not incompetence but deliberate lies told to cover other lies. In short the cover-up has become more damaging than the admission that the Arab Spring was nothing but a political strawman, Al Qaeda is not on its heels, and the region is not safer as a result by pandering to terrorists and savages instead of sticking with our allies.

And we had the two helicopters crash in the desert, I mean, that was the focus, and so him [Reagan] solving that made all the difference in the world. State Department Followed Benghazi Attack as It Happened

The U.S. State Department monitored the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, “in almost real-time,” according to an official who oversees diplomatic security.

Charlene Lamb, deputy assistant secretary of state for international programs in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, said a security agent activated a danger-notification system as the attack began shortly before 10 p.m. local time on Sept. 11.

“From that point on, I could follow what was happening in almost real time,” Lamb said in written testimony prepared for a hearing today by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee,

verbaluce on October 12, 2012 at 1:37 PM

There are really two things here. Yes, evolving intelligence will result in evolving statements over time.

But that evolution doesn’t include lying about some fundamental facts. Susan Rice did not lie her ass on no fewer than six Sunday talk shows about spontaneous protests only to have the facts evolve enough to show that it was a deliberate attack. She and the administration knew that it was a deliberate attack from the beginning. We still don’t know how the four Americans were killed- as was pointed out by Mr. Smith’s mother. The bodies were autopsied in Germany, why hasn’t the administration come out with the results? Not necessarily all the gory details about sodomy or whatever but at least the cause of death.

In short, there really aren’t evolving statements about Benghazi there are administration officials telling lies to cover other lies and at some point they are going have to stick to one story not these multiple scenerios thrown out there in the hope that one will stick.

2. The State Department also admitted that they were watching live video feed of the attack on the night of the attack. This video is just shows that as back up evidence.
3. Given #1 why did a State Department employee go on several TV shows nearly a week later and lie?
4. Given #1 why did Obama go to the UN and lie?
5. Why did Biden lie last night about requests for better security?

So I guess lying is natural for you if you accept their meme.

We now know that THEY knew from the time the attack started that:

1. There was NO demonstration that day or night in Benghazi.
2. They had intercepted a phone call from an Al Queda operative discussing a planned terrorist attack in Libya on 9/11.

So they can keep investigating all they want, but there is no credible reason for Obama or Rice or Clinton to have EVER directly or indirectly blamed the death of Amb. Stevens and the three other Americans in any way on a you tube video.

They all lied to the American people.

The Red Cross moved out of Benghazi because of security reasons. But there were the US personnel on the ground to prop up this myth of an Arab Spring. And of course State refused to give them what they needed in terms of security but forked over $108K for the Vienna embassy to get charging station for their Chevy Volts.

When he said that “We were unaware of the request for increased security…”, I assumed he was referring to the administration, not the State Dept.

RMCS_USN on October 12, 2012 at 1:53 PM

The State Department is part of the administration. They are spinning it the way you’ve laid it out- why would the President know anything about the security requests from a consulate that he couldn’t even find on a map?

But the President is the head of the administration. The President’s still responsible. So when Ryan says the administration was negligent he’s using the collective sense of the term.

Happy Nomad on October 12, 2012 at 2:02 PM

It’s pretty much what Biden said last night during the debate as well. Then he lied through his teeth about Benghazi…

SWalker on October 12, 2012 at 1:31 PM

Yeah, but what teeth! 32 of them…I know…I got to count them 52 times. It’s just hard to believe that such a small face can harbor so many teeth. I wonder if they’re all real.

After Slo’ Joe took a major dump on the intelligence community, can we count on them for some help with that elusive birth certificate thing?

Archivarix on October 12, 2012 at 1:32 PM

I hope you are being sarcastic. Otherwise, seriously? We have a president and administration that has shown complete incompetence in everything from economics to security, that has lied pretty much about every single promise he made, with political and ideological leanings that do not foster growth, are divisive, and lead to decadence,… and you are still hung on a piece of paper from an internet “conspiracy theory” that has been shown wrong over and over?! Really?

I hope I am wrong. We have more pressing issues to fight this administration over.

ptcamn on October 12, 2012 at 2:04 PM

There had been a “testing” attack on the facility at Benghazi prior to the killing attack without changes to the security. Was this and other events in Benghazi not included in the daily briefings that Dear Leader was reading on his Ipad?

d1carter on October 12, 2012 at 2:04 PM

Kind of o/t, but please get it out. I just did the work. It’s pretty damning and R/R should use it. Maybe, Ed or Allah can do a post and get it to the right people???

“There are people that are concerned (about the timeline for withdrawal) but not the Joint Chiefs. That was their recommendation in the Oval Office to the President of the United States of America. I sat there. I’m sure you’ll find someone who disagrees with the Pentagon. I’m positive you’ll find that in the military. But that’s not the case here.”

- Joe Biden, debate

Lie. The Joint Chiefs did NOT recommend a timeline. In fact, Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a House hearing that he supports THE PRESIDENT’S PLANS, but Mullen said they are “MORE AGGRESSIVE AND INCUR MORE RISK THAN HE CONSIDERS PRUDENT.”

While we are at it, let’s look at what some Democrats have said in the past about telegraphing exit dates to enemies…

“A deadline for pulling out will only encourage our enemies to wait us out. It would be a Lebanon in 1985, and God knows where it goes from there.”

- Senator Joe Biden, remarks to the Brookings Institution, 21 June 2005

“I don’t believe it’s smart to set a date for withdrawal. I don’t think you should ever telegraph your intentions to the enemy so they can await you.”

- Senator Hillary Clinton, 22 September 2005 via “Clinton II: parsing Clinton’s history on Iraq ,” National Journal’s The Hotline, 13 February 2007

“As far as setting a timeline that’s not a wise decision, because it only empowers those who don’t want us there.”

- Senator Harry Reid, remarks to the National Press Club, 31 January 2005

Where would The State Department get the idea to deny the consulate more security if it did not come down from the top?

birdwatcher on October 12, 2012 at 2:05 PM

Had Dear Leader not heard of any of this additional information out of Libya when he made his speech to the UN a full two weeks after the attack in Benghazi..?

d1carter on October 12, 2012 at 1:53 PM

He was still stuck on the “video caused it” lie at the time. Made quite the impassioned case for limiting free speech during that speech instead of telling Muslims where they can stick it if don’t like what others say about their prophet.

I hope that Mrs. Lamb was not the top of the management team making final decisions on what security was need in Benghazi after all of the violence that was happening prior to the assassination of Ambassador Stevens and the three other Americans. If she is the top of the management ladder we are in deep pooh!

I’ve heard nor read anything to tell me why he was in Benghazi although they are now saying that Amb Stevens showed a Turkey representative out to the front gate at 8:30pm and nothing was happening on the street at that time.

The administration owes Pat Smith an honest answer, right now–today. Better yet, let’s all chip in and pay for an independent autopsy on Sean Smith. This poor woman is in agony and begging just to know how her only child left this world.

As I understand it, the attack happened at 9:20pm Syria time, which means it was 2:20pm White House time.

So everyone stateside should have been awake and at their desks. How is it that they can keep saying they didn’t know what was going on in real time?

Human sacrifice 21st Century American style.

It would seem the Aztec High Priests of the 15th century have been reincarnated and are now in full reign at the building some still call the Pentagon.

America’s Generals are now very much like the Aztec High Priests of many centuries ago. The main difference, and it’s a relatively small one, is that instead of continually sacrificing what they regarded as their excess and disposable human property to the Sun God to try to gain benevolence and avoid wrath, America’s Generals keep trying to sacrifice America’s Constitution, and do sacrifice more and more of the lives and limbs of America’s troops, whom they regard as their excess and disposable human property, as well as hundreds of billions of dollars of America’s rapidly shrinking treasure, which although itself is of much lesser importance is still no small matter, to the gods they reverently call “The Prophet Mohammad”, “The Holy Qur’an” and “The Noble People Of Afghanistan and their Noble Muslim Culture” to try to gain benevolence and avoid wrath, and maybe even get an extra star and another few assorted colorful baubles for which to adorn themselves.

Is our military fighting for anything most Americans would regard as at all decent in Afghanistan? Certainly not our Army, nor our Marines. America’s Generals have repeatedly ordered them to respect the gods they call “The Prophet Mohammad”, “The Holy Qur’an” and “The Noble People Of Afghanistan and their Noble Muslim Culture” and if American troops get shot to death by what their Generals call their Partners in Peace, then the Generals conclude that America’s derelict and sacrilegious troops must not have respected the gods they call “The Prophet Mohammad”, “The Holy Qur’an” and “The Noble People Of Afghanistan and their Noble Muslim Culture” nearly enough and order them to take still more religious and cultural “sensitivity” training so they can better respect the Noble Muslim Culture of the Noble People of Afghanistan, maybe even enough where they can start joining in the practicing of that Noble Muslim Culture themselves, which would no doubt delight the Generals to no end.

There of course is never any “sensitivity” training ever even recommended for what America’s Generals call “The Noble People Of Afghanistan” so they might better understand and appreciate Western and American culture. But then as America’s Generals clearly must regard the Noble Muslim Culture of the Noble People of Afghanistan as being far superior to Western and American culture, they would surely regard any such thing as, well, absolutely unthinkable, and blasphemous, and upon hearing any such suggestion would no doubt order even more “sensitivity” training.

* Mainstream Noble People of Afghanistan Muslim Culture includes child rape of both young girls and young boys, torturing dogs including puppies, total enslavement of women, stoning women to death for being raped, and death to apostates, which itself covers a whole lot, just to very briefly mention a few of the highlights.

PBS. Hah. They are now reporting that “recent intelligence” points to the fact that Al Queda affiliates may have played a “small role” in the Benghazi attack.

By small role, I guess they mean murdering the Americans.

I guess perhaps another group was tasked with bringing refreshments to the after-meeting?

Has anyone found out why Ambassador Stevens was even in Bengazi on 9/11 instead of the embassy in Tripoli. Why did he make the trip there on the first place? Did the attackers know he would be there?

Could the coverup be a coverup for another bigger coverup?

How is it that Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Charlene Lamb can be watching the assault unfold in real time, but our intelligence agencies and the White House have no idea what happened? (IE – no protest prior to the assault) Why was she incapable of speaking out and saying that there was no protest prior to the attack?

I can cut the White House slack on their ignorance regarding additional security requests from Benghazi. Those sorts of requests don’t go thru them – they go thru the State Department – and apparently die on the desk of Charlene Lamb.

However, I’d bet that a lot of background information regarding instability in the area (prior attacks, assassination attempts etc.) was included in the president’s daily briefings – but sounds like somebody couldn’t put two and two together. “Gee – looks like it’s still pretty dangerous in the Benghazi area – are our assets and personnel being properly and sufficiently supported?”

No, no they weren’t.
