Biden: Hey, none of us knew that the Benghazi consulate wanted more security! Update: CBS News: Biden’s got some clean-up to do on Libya; Update: White House: No, really, we had no idea

posted at 10:01 am on October 12, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

This was easily the most disturbing moment of the entire debate — so much so that media outlets like the Washington Post and BuzzFeed immediately published rebuttals to Joe Biden’s claim at the end of the debate.  When Martha Raddatz opened the event by talking about Libya, Paul Ryan hammered the Obama administration for not heeding the calls for better security in an area where everyone knew that al-Qaeda and other radical Islamist terror networks had grown significantly since Obama and NATO decapitated the Qaddafi regime.  Biden’s defense?  Claim ignorance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=fexVQ4eYfhY

During the vice presidential debate Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden said the administration “did not know” that personnel working at the American embassy in Libya had requested more security before the deadly attack on Sept. 11.

As Biden was discussing the attack, Martha Raddatz, the debate moderator, cut in.

“And they wanted more security there,” Raddatz said.

“But we weren’t told they wanted more security there,” Biden responded. “We did not know they wanted more security there.”

That assertion runs counter to evidence and testimonies that were presented at aHouse Oversight Committee hearing Wednesday, where the committee released five memos requesting additional security, and witnesses from the State Department confirmed that those requests had been denied.

Glenn Kessler objected as well:

But this was contradicted by State Department officials just this week, in testimony before a congressional panel and in unclassified cables released by a congressional committee. “All of us at post were in sync that we wanted these resources,” said Eric Nordstrom, the top regional security officer in Libya earlier this year. A Utah national guardsman who led a security team, Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, said: “We felt great frustration that those requests were ignored or just never met.”

Just taking Biden at his word, we’d have to believe that (a) the State Department had no special concern over personnel in eastern Libya, where the weak central government can’t even deploy a police force, (b) the White House was unaware that al-Qaeda had expanded its operations in the region, and (c) no one remembered that the anniversary of 9/11 was approaching.  That’s a shocking level of incompetence to confess on national TV. Small wonder that CNN’s tracking group considered this Joe Biden’s lowest point of the debate.

Furthermore, one has to wonder how the intelligence community will react to Biden’s bus-tossing them during the debate, too:

Vice President Biden blamed intelligence officials for the administration’s changing account of the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, during Thursday night’s debate with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

The Obama administration has been under fire for initially linking the attack on the U.S. Consulate to an anti-Islam video made in the U.S. before later acknowledging that that the attack was an act of terrorism, not a protest that turned violent.

Biden said the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, was repeating what intelligence sources had told her when she blamed the video as a “proximate cause” of the violence in an interview five days after the attack.

“The intelligence community told us that,” Biden said. “As they learned more facts about exactly what happened, they changed their assessment.”

Then why did the White House designate it a terrorist attack within the first 24 hours while insisting publicly that it was a “spontaneous protest” that “spun out of control”?

Update: Via Daniel Halper, CBS News’ Jan Crawford reported that Biden “may have some clean up of his own to do today on Libya”:

Yes, I think this one’s going to stick.

Update II: Good Lord:

Vice President Joseph Biden speaks only for himself and President Barack Obama, and neither man was aware that U.S. officials in Libya had asked the State Department for more security before the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, a top White House official told The Cable.

Biden has come under fire for saying at Thursday night’s debate, “We weren’t told they wanted more security. We did not know they wanted more security there.”

The Cable asked Deputy National Security Advisor for Communications Ben Rhodes whether Biden was speaking for the entire Obama administration, including the State Department, which acknowledged receiving multiple requests for more Libya security in the months before the attacks. Rhodes said that Biden speaks only for himself and the president and neither of them knew about the requests at the time.

So … it’s official that no one at the White House had a clue what was happening in a mess Obama helped create in eastern Libya? Words fail me.

Slightly O/T: Unka Joe possibly missed the Syrian Air plane carrying munitions to Damascas that was stopped before reaching its destination. This was only the first plane that was caught doing this. How do we know that Iran hasn’t already gotten the missile to deliver all that fissile material they are so busily enriching since the ‘intelligence community’ missed the lead up to the Benghazi attack so badly. Huh, Joe, huh, huh.

Here is the question from Raddatz, throwing him an answer within her question that will absolve Bams:

it was a pre-planned assault by heavily armed men. Wasn’t this a massive intelligence failure, Vice President Biden?

Of course it wasn’t! They were warned multiple times directl; in DC they were following the attack in real time. But if it was an intelligence failure, it helps President It Wasn’t My Fault Obama.

If Obama wasn’t aware he would have been aware had he attended the security briefings instead of just campaigning and being too busy with The View, Letterman and other fluff TV shows. And after he was aware he continued to lie about Benghazi and even went to the United Nations and lied as well as spending taxpayer dollars to produce an apologizing and appeasing ad.

As far as the debate overall, Biden’s performance was shameful and unbecoming a vice president. Raddatz was a disgrace interrupting Ryan and pressing him on Obama talking points.

WisRich on October 12, 2012 at 12:08 PM

First thing Biden certain showed us all what he is about.

More important is WaPo’s and other reactions to his debating points.

Newsweek with Niall Ferguson’s article and other outlets on the left have made it quite clear that they want some distance from Obama when he and his people are way to free with the truth.

I think they understand that Obama could easily be gone, and do not want to be seen in too close company: keeping credibility at least as a slogan is paramount. On the other hand, they really do not feel it wise to completely turn on him this instance.

Denver Bob on October 12, 2012 at 12:09 PM

The White House is pointing fingers at everyone else.

It’s probably bullshit, but if they’re going to have any credibility with it there’s going to have to be heads rolling.

If the White House was to be believed, the failures were at State and CIA, and so you’d expect to see Hillary and Petraeus with their heads on the block.

But these are two names Obama can’t push out.

Would Petraeus resign if he felt he were being unfairly targeted? Would he be considering it after Biden’s performance last night?

Hillary’s been shirking responsibility for the last three years. Clearly State screwed up, and the screwups range very close to the top, but Clinton would never resign, she would never admit responsibility. She’s trying to remain invisible.

IDEAS ON DEBATES
These debates all have certain predefined values that must be kept in mind when considering the valuation of performances. One consideration is that Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates can not be taken separately since they both lead to the same common goal.

The first Debate is about . Who looks like the next President of the United States? What is said is a far second, less important and rapidly fleeing thought.
Romney 1 Obama 0

The Second Debate is about Confirming your opinion. Finding what was there, to verify, what you already believe. It is unlikely that this debate will change any preconceived opinions.
Biden 0 Rayn 1

The Third Debate is about taking the positions that are the highest in the political polls. We will be told only what the candidates think we want to hear. It is natural to except opinions that are the same as our own.

Obama 1 Romney 1

In the first debate Obama came off as the school yard sneak that never fought for his or any one else’s rights but was always plotting his revenge.

In the second debate Biden appeared as an over the hill politician that constantly giggles
to himself from the jokes that only he hears from the voices in what remains of his brain.
The fear that he is second in line for the President of the UNITED STATES becomes over whelming to some.

In the third debate Omama is more likely to stretch the truth, be free and easy with numbers, and if necessary, absolutely lie about the facts. Romney will counter many points but not enough to win the debate.

Now that that is all out and in the open we can get on to things that really matter, BASEBALL

Three points immediately come to mind by this:

1. The buck definitely does not stop with Obama…EVER…unless it makes him look good of course.

2. Obama is going to not only throw NSA under the bus, but Hillary Clinton under the bus. When she realizes that is what he is doing, it will be interesting to see if some e-mails or other documents get mysteriously leaked showing that the White House had personal knowledge, as opposed to constructive knowledge (doesn’t State, Security and someone in the White House speak???) of this additional security request.

3. I wonder if the requests for additional security or analysis of the situation in Libya were in any of the security briefings taht Obama chose to skip.

The White House press secretary said the Vice President didn’t contradict the State Department last night because he was not speaking about the Administration as a whole. Video

Obama-era cluterfark in front of your very eyes, America!

Send these destructive clowns packing, mocked into oblivion, so as to never repeat such a hoax/pox upon the good land.

The ads write themselves, gratis.

Obama/Biden: We didn’t lie, we’re just incompetent.

WisRich on October 12, 2012 at 12:31 PM

On the face of it…but Biden did lie. They knew, right away, and Obama went to Vegas.

Don’t believe a word they say.

Intelligence, if you are still that, destroy them!!!

Schadenfreude on October 12, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Rhodes said that Biden speaks only for himself and the president and neither of them knew about the requests at the time.

So … it’s official that no one at the White House had a clue…

So, does this mean that the only time anyone that’s in the White House now will have a clue that either Iran or North Korean has the ability to launch a nuke at the U.S. is when a mushroom cloud appears over a major city or military base?

Dear God have mercy on us….

theotherone on October 12, 2012 at 12:35 PM

How is this going to go over with State and the families of those murdered?

LASue on October 12, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Hillary looks/acts like hell. The Clintons will vote for Romney.

Schadenfreude on October 12, 2012 at 12:35 PM

My post debate analysis:
Biden was probably told to go after Ryan. After Obama’s horrible showing they needed to get their base re energized. Mission accomplished, Unfortunately, by his increasingly bizarre antics, he turned off every one else. The people who thought he did a great job were going to vote for Obama anyway, so what did he really accomplish?
Ryan was probably told he was not to win the debate, just don’t lose it. He’s running for Vice President. He’s the facts and figures guy. You don’t want to out shine your boss. Mission accomplished. By keeping his composure in the face of a hostile opponent and moderator, he showed great strength of character. This will most likely sway people who were on the fence to vote for Romney.
Debate winner: Paul Ryan

Agian, I need to ask, What else does the WH not know about ?

I am fully aware that this cannot be answered. But, it is disturbing that ANYTHING to do with Libya was not known at the WH considering the recent actions there.
What else are they missing ?

Jabberwock on October 12, 2012 at 12:36 PM

This is the same excuse the Obama administration pulled with Fast And Furious: We knew nothing, NOTHING, about these awful things that were happening in the government we’re in charge of. Seems to me Obama has succeeded in building an administration not to solve problems, but to obscure them.

Socratease on October 12, 2012 at 12:36 PM

Not only does this administration hide from the truth, cover up the truth , and lie again to cover up their incompetency, they do dishonor by lying about how they could have protected the ambassador, who was needlessly slain along with the brave men who were there on other business. This is yet another example of lies , more lies, and damned lies this administration knows how to pull off best, because if you can’t govern effectively, you had better know how to lie.

D.Mockracy on October 12, 2012 at 12:36 PM

Update: “We have no idea what’s going on in areas we’re responsible for.”

BuckeyeSam on October 12, 2012 at 12:20 PM

Is this the same excuse we will be given when this administration doesn’t know Iran has achieved a nuke?

Romeny needs to put these two Biden statements together and ask America if they aren’t just a wee bit SCARED!

katablog.com on October 12, 2012 at 12:37 PM

We can’t even expect Joe Biden to accurately remember if he voted for wars so why would this be any different?

gwelf on October 12, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Am I correct in thinking that this pretty much clearly throws Hillary Clinton under the bus???

If so, what will be Bill’s response over the next three weeks?

parke on October 12, 2012 at 12:07 PM

I don’t know. I wouldn’t put too much hope in BillyJeff publicly dissing Obama. Clinton is scheduled to appear today in Royal Oak, MI for a GOTV event on behalf of the democrat candidates.

totherightofthem on October 12, 2012 at 12:39 PM

From Joe Biden to Joe Isuzu in one debate, and we find out everyone else in the White House is also Joe Isuzu.

An Army of Joe Isuzus.

ajacksonian on October 12, 2012 at 12:40 PM

Rhodes said that Biden speaks only for himself and the president and neither of them knew about the requests at the time.

What??? One heartbeat away and he knows exactly jack and sh!t about the security problems at an embassy we own in a country that they, THEY decided to unilaterally attack last spring??? The president didn’t know, the VP didn’t know, and the PVT William Santiago security personnel on the ground contacted everybody except Santa Claus requesting a transfer off of Guantanamo Bay asking for more security.

ted c on October 12, 2012 at 12:40 PM

I guess Obama thought daily intelligence briefs were a drag, just like prepping for debate.

Axion on October 12, 2012 at 12:41 PM

Justice for the Benghazi Four!!

May the lies of this Administration all be exposed.

Amen.

PappyD61 on October 12, 2012 at 12:41 PM

Rhodes said that Biden speaks only for himself and the president and neither of them knew about the requests at the time.

Wow…that is actually REALLY disturbing, that the White House doesn’t even know what’s going on in its own administration! So, now we know…they ARE totally incompetent…their own intelligence division doesn’t think they are competent enough handle sensitive information and situations!

Highlar on October 12, 2012 at 12:44 PM

So … it’s official that no one at the White House had a clue what was happening in a mess Obama helped create in eastern Libya? Words fail me.

Someone is going to have to be thrown over to the sharks over this one.

Let’s start the guessing game now.

Susan Rice?

Hillary Clinton?

Clapper, the Intelligence guy?

Defense Secretary Panetta?

Who will it be?

PappyD61 on October 12, 2012 at 12:44 PM

Remember Holder’s defense in the F&F hearings ?
No one ever told him.
Sound familiar ?

Jabberwock on October 12, 2012 at 12:30 PM

Yeah it does, and for the first time I am actually suspecting it might be true.

rockmom on October 12, 2012 at 12:44 PM

What else are they missing ?

Jabberwock on October 12, 2012 at 12:36 PM

I suspect they are also missing accurate information on Iran’s nuclear progress. But, Sheriff Joe said not to worry about Iran. They’ve got it handled.

Rhodes said that Biden speaks only for himself and the president and neither of them knew about the requests at the time.

Perhaps if our Narcissist in Chief would attend an intelligence briefing on occasion, the team might be informed. This guy wants the title without the work. I don’t believe for a minute that he reads the entire daily briefing.

PleaseFlyOver on October 12, 2012 at 12:45 PM

Vice President Joseph Biden speaks only for himself and President Barack Obama, and neither man was aware that U.S. officials in Libya had asked the State Department for more security before the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, a top White House official told The Cable.

Holy f**king s**t.

These guys are going to lose. I’ll bet money on it.
