Biden: Hey, none of us knew that the Benghazi consulate wanted more security! Update: CBS News: Biden’s got some clean-up to do on Libya; Update: White House: No, really, we had no idea

This was easily the most disturbing moment of the entire debate — so much so that media outlets like the Washington Post and BuzzFeed immediately published rebuttals to Joe Biden’s claim at the end of the debate.  When Martha Raddatz opened the event by talking about Libya, Paul Ryan hammered the Obama administration for not heeding the calls for better security in an area where everyone knew that al-Qaeda and other radical Islamist terror networks had grown significantly since Obama and NATO decapitated the Qaddafi regime.  Biden’s defense?  Claim ignorance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=fexVQ4eYfhY

During the vice presidential debate Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden said the administration “did not know” that personnel working at the American embassy in Libya had requested more security before the deadly attack on Sept. 11.

As Biden was discussing the attack, Martha Raddatz, the debate moderator, cut in.

“And they wanted more security there,” Raddatz said.

“But we weren’t told they wanted more security there,” Biden responded. “We did not know they wanted more security there.”

That assertion runs counter to evidence and testimonies that were presented at aHouse Oversight Committee hearing Wednesday, where the committee released five memos requesting additional security, and witnesses from the State Department confirmed that those requests had been denied.

Glenn Kessler objected as well:

But this was contradicted by State Department officials just this week, in testimony before a congressional panel and in unclassified cables released by a congressional committee. “All of us at post were in sync that we wanted these resources,” said Eric Nordstrom, the top regional security officer in Libya earlier this year. A Utah national guardsman who led a security team, Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, said: “We felt great frustration that those requests were ignored or just never met.”

Just taking Biden at his word, we’d have to believe that (a) the State Department had no special concern over personnel in eastern Libya, where the weak central government can’t even deploy a police force, (b) the White House was unaware that al-Qaeda had expanded its operations in the region, and (c) no one remembered that the anniversary of 9/11 was approaching.  That’s a shocking level of incompetence to confess on national TV. Small wonder that CNN’s tracking group considered this Joe Biden’s lowest point of the debate.

Furthermore, one has to wonder how the intelligence community will react to Biden’s bus-tossing them during the debate, too:

Vice President Biden blamed intelligence officials for the administration’s changing account of the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, during Thursday night’s debate with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

The Obama administration has been under fire for initially linking the attack on the U.S. Consulate to an anti-Islam video made in the U.S. before later acknowledging that that the attack was an act of terrorism, not a protest that turned violent.

Biden said the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, was repeating what intelligence sources had told her when she blamed the video as a “proximate cause” of the violence in an interview five days after the attack.

“The intelligence community told us that,” Biden said. “As they learned more facts about exactly what happened, they changed their assessment.”

Then why did the White House designate it a terrorist attack within the first 24 hours while insisting publicly that it was a “spontaneous protest” that “spun out of control”?

Update: Via Daniel Halper, CBS News’ Jan Crawford reported that Biden “may have some clean up of his own to do today on Libya”:

Yes, I think this one’s going to stick.

Update II: Good Lord:

Vice President Joseph Biden speaks only for himself and President Barack Obama, and neither man was aware that U.S. officials in Libya had asked the State Department for more security before the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, a top White House official told The Cable.

Biden has come under fire for saying at Thursday night’s debate, “We weren’t told they wanted more security. We did not know they wanted more security there.”

The Cable asked Deputy National Security Advisor for Communications Ben Rhodes whether Biden was speaking for the entire Obama administration, including the State Department, which acknowledged receiving multiple requests for more Libya security in the months before the attacks. Rhodes said that Biden speaks only for himself and the president and neither of them knew about the requests at the time.

So … it’s official that no one at the White House had a clue what was happening in a mess Obama helped create in eastern Libya? Words fail me.

Furthermore, one has to wonder how the intelligence community will react to Biden’s bus-tossing them during the debate, too:

I don’t think that they will take kindly to that treatment. The intel community knew, but the intel community is not tasked with resourcing the defense of the consulate, the State Department is. If Biden didn’t know, then State didn’t tell them, or they did know and he’s lying. Either way, the testimony shows that there was a valid threat, on an historically important date, and that resources had been cut to protect the ambassador, his personnel, and the facilities.

Now that’s out of the way, Biden accomplished his mission for the debate – bring some red meat for the faithful. It matters not to the Dem base nor the media whether he was accurate, his job was to stir up their “passion” and make them “feel” like O&B are large and in charge. Obama let his people down last week, and Uncle Joe had to show there’s still life in the machine. He succeeded in that, even if the adults in the room didn’t like his smirky condescension.

Scapegoating the INTEL Community will backfire.

There have been problems within the IC, yes, but there is the expectation that a President will stand up for it and do his job of being the point of accountability and responsibility.

They are the last group inside government you want to fingerpoint and blame from the Presidential or Vice Presidential position.

The only thing worse is not understanding that the designs for nuclear devices are already extant and old technology. Getting the fissile materials is the hard part… that and the magical thinking that if we just keep sanctions on that the Mullahs will suddenly become rooted in the real world and not their belief system is just plain wrong. The race to collapse the Iranian economy and the race for the Mullahs to get the bomb is putting the entire region and, via terrorism, the world at the mercy of people who just want to see the world burn.

This American (who also votes) does not want:

– a Secretary of State who speaks to the world like she’s reading “Jack and Jill” to a room full of people in Iron Lungs;

– an Oval Office who laughs and laughs and laughs when Americans perish in service to this country;

– an Oval Office who wastes the money of this nation on indulgences beyond luxurious and maintains they’re entitled to that and more;

– a Secretary of State who disappears after the phone rings, which she’s answered by saying “wrong number”.

This list would be a long, long list if I included everything I do not want for this nation. In summary, what I don’t want is the Obama Administration and a Leftwing/Democrat majority in Congress.

In connect with embassy security, don’t forget this:

“The congressman here cut embassy security in his budget by $300 million below what we asked for.”

- Joe Biden, debate

Ryan’s budget proposal did not cut $300 million from embassy security. It called for a 19% overall decrease in non-defence discretionary spending, but does not even mention embassy security. The cut does not have to affect every programme equally. For example, in 2012, we gave a grant of $444.1 million to Big Big & Co, who have said that they do not need subsidies. That money could have been used to increase embassy security.

Also, 4 days after the administration denied additional security to Libya, including the request of continued usage of a DC-3, it authorised a new electric charging station and Chevy Volts
the American Embassy in Vienna, which is located in the country where Obama claims they speak “Austrian.”

Also, it is absolutely impossible for the House to cut ANYTHING when the Senate hasn’t passed a budget in 1,253 days and the President hasn’t signed it.

On 14 September 2012, “President Obama released the long-awaited “sequestration report,” detailing the cuts the White House would make to the budget under last year’s Budget Control Act if no deal is reached in Congress.

And there, buried on page 136, is the White House’s proposed cuts to “Embassy Security, Construction, and Maintenance.” $129 million. That’s a full 8.2 percent of the possible sequestrable amount. It’s a massive slash of the budget for our embassies, consulates, and security abroad.”

Moreover, if we can’t trust our intelligence community to know that there was potential life-threating trouble in Benghazi that warranted more security — after Al Qaeda totally telegraphed what they were going to try to do — how can we trust their assessment of Iran’s capability (we already know their intent, too!)…?

But of course the problem isn’t the intelligence community. It’s the dolts at the top who believe what they want, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.

These liars need to be taken to task hard on this point.

Exactly, I was a machine operator for a Aerospace contractor, in other words, I ran machines, Mill’s, Lathes, saws, grinders, brakes, presses. You get the idea.

The technical specifications for the physical housing of a nuclear device are well known and documented. Iran is known to have purchased those designs from Dr. A.Q. Khan’s proliferation network.

Any reasonably competent machine shop can assemble the physical housing for a nuclear device in just a couple of weeks. The most difficult part of making a nuclear weapon is the fissile material, after that it’s the triggering device.

The IAEA has already indicated that they found what they believed to be the remains of a decommissioned Iranian Nuclear triggering device prototype development facility.

In other words, Iran already has worked out the triggering device, can manufacture the weapons external housing in any machine shop in the entire country and only needs the fissile material to become a nuclear weapons possessing nation.

Bibi is and was 100 percent entirely correct with his “Red Line” time line, Iran is just a few months away from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

Brat on October 12, 2012 at 10:51 AM

I finally figured it out.

Biden was doing his impression of the Joker. The maniacal laugh, the smile with too many teeth, the dark condescention, it was all there.

And he pulled it off without makeup! (Though he may have caps.)

Who was Ryan? Fit, dedicated and long-suffering? Batman of course. No superpowers, just focus in the midst of sinister proceedings.

Exactly! I was trying to place what he reminded me of!

Correct, oh so correct.

Joey has a lot of ‘clean up’ to do. Any bets he’ll be sequestered for the next 4 weeks?

GarandFan on October 12, 2012 at 10:56 AM

Biden could always use the iced tea defense.

meci on October 12, 2012 at 10:56 AM

Biden’s proven himself an utter fool. Only fools who follow him would find that energizing. At LEAST, though there be many a fool on the Left, I doubt they’re all fools such that they feel good overall about the Biden offensiveness as their cheerleader.

Lourdes on October 12, 2012 at 10:17 AM

What last night’s debate was (primarily) was outreach to the MSNBC crowd who wanted to see a “fight” and a lot of yelling and screaming and had zero interest in any actual arguments being made. These are Obama’s core supporters and more than anything else Obama cannot afford to alienate them.

Remember that things on the left are very different from the right. They take their base much more seriously than the right takes its base, and actually listen to them. They were reaching for base at the expense of the indepedents last night. I guess they think Obama can undo any damage done in the next two debates.

Doomberg on October 12, 2012 at 10:56 AM

White House records reveal that the moderator of last night’s vice presidential debate, Martha Raddatz, visited Vice President Joe Biden at his official residence on March 26, 2012. Raddatz is an employee of ABC News.

No, no bias there.

Bibi is and was 100 percent entirely correct with his “Red Line” time line, Iran is just a few months away from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

SWalker on October 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Thank you for reminding me of this. I was thinking of something I’d read on this very thing when the liar was sneering/talking/responding to Ryan. I’m going to bookmark your link.

avagreen on October 12, 2012 at 10:58 AM

In other words, Iran already has worked out the triggering device, can manufacture the weapons external housing in any machine shop in the entire country and only needs the fissile material to become a nuclear weapons possessing nation.

Bibi is and was 100 percent entirely correct with his “Red Line” time line, Iran is just a few months away from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

SWalker on October 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

The AQ Khan designs were also what Kadaffy had, as well. What little I was able to track down about them was that they were reasonably priced on the black market at around $30k. Not bad for the blueprints for a known device that works, when you come right down to it.

Throw in the huge amount of Mitutoyo separators that couldn’t be tracked down as part of their sales to the black market, and you get a really nasty situation of approximately 10,000 unaccounted for separators bought by someone on the black market. Iran had to have a good set of equipment to copy… thus the expectation was that they purchased some amount of those separators and did just that.

The only way to stop the Mullahs now is not to degrade their economy but crash their infrastructure. Their own energy sector is weak and hasn’t been invested in since the Revolution and it is pretty iffy as it is. Once the power goes off, the energy supplies are beyond repair and no one can cook food, then producing anything becomes difficult. Survival becomes difficult.

You can only do so much once the infrastructure is gone… yet the Mullahs will try, even then, as their priority is chaos, not order.

The word on the streets is that she was admitted to a psych ward, suffering from “mental exhaustion”.

Doesn’t it give all Americans a warm secure feeling to know that our government is in the hands of calm level headed people such as Stand Up, Chuck Biden and the Marxist Obama?

Imagine in a dark and twisted way – Obama/Biden re-elected 2012……

2014 – Iran destroys Israel with 4 nuclear weapons – trucked in and on ships…..

In the holocaust – all the Palestinian people are also destroyed…..

Joe Biden shrugs his shoulders and says – “Oops!”

Perhaps, if the Pres and VP had attended a few of the Intel breifings, they might have had a clue.

Naw, the trip to Vegas the day after our embassy was attacked by AQ and the ambassador and 3 employees slaughtered was more important.

rollthedice on October 12, 2012 at 10:03 AM

Unfortunately though, it is also nut untypical of most democrats. Bill Clinton was described by the MSM as a ‘pathological liar”. Obama wouldn’t know how the truth if it hit him in the face. He continues to do things and then turn around and say he didn’t do them or accuse Romney and Ryan of lying, but never says what those lies are. We’ve listened to Wasserman-Schultz’s delusional answers to straight questions with amazement, and consider how both Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi twist and lie with complete effortlessness, and Cutter’s interview with Brett Baier last night was just breath taking for its arrogant sidestepping and denial about our embassy in Libya even though 4 people were murdered.

As far as the main street media is concerned- He got away with that one about missiles as well. The Kardashian voters think slo Joe is now some kind of “Fissile” Rocket Scientist !!!

If the media can cover up Fast and Furious- and they will cycle out the Amb. Stevens assassination……they won’t have a hard time burying the misspeaks of slo Joe.

and by the way – Does America really want to put another war on the credit card ?

We know too much. The censored public knows only what NBCABCCBS tell them.

FlaMurph on October 12, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Did Biden really say that this didn’t matter because Iran doesn’t have any missiles? Does he really think that Iran doesn’t have any missiles? And does he not realize that an Iranian UAV successfully breached Israeli airspace last week?

Alternate universes….

blink on October 12, 2012 at 11:03 AM

That is what the drone test was for…..
More than likely the nukes will be trucked in on brought in on ships.
That is why Israel has the blockade going on.

Post-debate White House statement, via Twitchy.com. ……

Vice President Joseph Biden speaks only for himself and President Barack Obama, and neither man was aware that U.S. officials in Libya had asked the State Department for more security before the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, a top White House official told The Cable.
