Stephanie Cutter: Benghazi is only an issue because of Romney and Ryan; Update: NYT more or less agrees

posted at 4:04 pm on October 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

The key bit comes in the last 20 seconds but I’m giving you four full minutes because I want you to watch her blithely assure CNN at the beginning that “the administration has been open and honest since day one about the Benghazi attack.” The administration she’s referring to there is the same one that had a dozen or so different intelligence reports flowing in within the first few hours after the attack pointing to an Al Qaeda connection and yet still sent Susan Rice out to lie to the media about a “spontaneous protest” five days later. CNN helpfully refreshes her memory with a lowlight reel of White House spin, whereupon a cornered flack falls back on her most basic impulse in a desperate situation: She blames the other party for making a big deal out of nothing. And by “nothing,” I mean the murder of the U.S. ambassador and three American consulate personnel.

Ace thinks this is a consummate Kinsleyan gaffe, revealing the Obama campaign’s survival instinct at its most rat-like in the aftermath of Benghazi. Could be, but it’s hard to picture Gibbs or Ben LaBolt saying something like this even in a desperate moment. There’s something here specific to Cutter herself and her Orwellian approach to spin. You saw another example of it just a few hours ago. There’s no reality too real that she won’t cheerfully deny it or blame the other side for it, no matter how highly stacked the facts are against her. The only person I can think of who operates the same way is Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and it makes both of them simply terrible spokesmen and liabilities for their party. I’m seeing calls in the last few hours for OFA to fire her for these comments, but I hope they don’t. She helps us more than she does them.

Update: Via Josh Trevino, it seems the “politicization” of the Benghazi attacks has discouraged the world’s most influential newspaper from devoting much coverage to Issa’s hearings. File this away mentally for when President Romney’s foreign policy is instantly “politicized” next year:

Baquet and Abramson’s remarks come in response to criticism from the paper’s own public editor, Margaret Sullivan, who objected to the editors decision not run its story about the hearings on today’s front page. Both the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal gave yesterday’s hearings prominent play on their front pages, above the fold. The Times placed its story on page A3.

Baquet, who oversees the paper’s afternoon editorial meeting, told Sullivan he “didn’t think there was anything significantly new in it.”

“It’s three weeks before the election and it’s a politicized thing, but if they had made significant news, we would have put it on the front,” he said.

Abramson, who described the paper’s Libya coverage as “excellent and very muscular,” also suggested the hearings were politicized, telling Sullivan that she had told editors “to weigh the news value against the reality that Congressional hearings are not all about fact-finding.”

Benghazi is only an issue because of Romney and Ryan

Then, thank God for Romney and Ryan.

applebutter on October 11, 2012 at 5:47 PM

So, harping on Romney’s ACCURATE remarks for over a week was not politicizing the disastrous WH handling of the attack, but lying about it incessantly is not. The fun never ends with this skank.

MJBrutus on October 11, 2012 at 5:47 PM

What a bunch of crap. This administration was GROSSLY NEGLIGENT in its responsibility to our State Dept. personnel in Libya… and on the anniversary of 9/11 for pete’s sake! Then, in order to avoid criticism during an election year, they blamed an amateur film-maker, had him purp-walked in the middle of the night, and then had him JAILED ostensibly on a parole violation. How many parole violators do we see covered in every major news outlet?

The behavior of this administration has been disgusting. They can’t even be bothered to be honest with the families of the slain, not even in private. Sean Smith’s mother doesn’t even know his cause of death. And they want to claim it’s all about politics. That’s the best defense they can come up with. Unacceptable.

Yea, idiot, coz it was the world’s best kept secret that the ‘safe house’ in Benghazi was a CIA nest, btw, it’s been trashed, so I doubt that it has much operational value now…besides, don’t you think that’s why it was attacked to begin with, coz some of the militias knew what they were doing there…

You didn’t watch the hearing, did you little man?

It was State Department official who put up a photo that may have been classified, to which Rep. Jason Chaffetz said, “We’re getting into classified issues that deal with sources and methods that would be totally inappropriate in an open forum such as this.”

A State Department official assured him that the material was “entirely unclassified” and that the photo was from a commercial satellite. “I totally object to the use of that photo,” Chaffetz continued. He went on to say that “I was told specifically while I was in Libya I could not and should not ever talk about what you’re showing here today.”

Issa then directed that the photo be taken down.

Flora Duh on October 11, 2012 at 6:09 PM

I rarely comment twice on here (hell, I rarely comment once) but these remarks are simply astounding. I truly think the Obama campaign jumped the proverbial shark today. The Romney campaign should pull down every commercial they have and run nothing but Cutter saying this with a shot of the embassy in flames in the background. The Obama version would also have a picture of Ambassador Stevens being dragged through the streets or the coffins coming off of the plane but they probably don’t need to take that route. Maybe that’ll be the Crossroads GPS version.

Simply stunning that the highest mouthpiece in the campaign would say this with a video camera in her face. If the most junior staffer said it that would be bad enough. Political malpractice but it’s a straight shot through the veils of what these people actually believe.

This one is going to leave a mark. I don’t know if Ryan should say something about it tonight or save it for Romney to use against the Obama comeback attempt in their next debate.

She’s in Obama’s long line to be rolled under the bus. Maybe that will get her off my television once and for all.

Philly on October 11, 2012 at 6:49 PM

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter pushed back this morning on “This Week” against any suggestion that she knew the details behind the death of a woman whose husband, Joe Soptic, appeared in a third party advertisement attacking Mitt Romney.

The advertisement, which essentially places blame on Romney for the death of Soptic’s wife from cancer, was paid for by Priorities USA, a super PAC that supports President Obama.

“I didn’t know the facts of when Mr. Soptic’s wife got sick, and I only recently learned that through all of the hysteria over that ad,” Cutter said “But, Jake, what I do know is what Mr. Soptic’s experience was with GST Steel, after Mitt Romney bought it, loaded it up with debt, overleveraged it, paid himself excess profits and fees, but then forced that company into bankruptcy, leaving Mr. Soptic without a job, without health care, and without his pension.”

Cutter has maintained that she was not familiar with the details of Mr. Soptic’s wife’s death even though she was on a conference call that featured Soptic in May.

this woman is a real POW……piece of work…..

I think it was her insistence that she had never heard of Joe Soptic before he recorded his ad accusing Romney of murdering his wife. Then the audio tape of a conference call hosted by Steffi months before where Joe was a featured speaker turned up.

But who knows? Lying is what these people do, so it could have been any number of incidents.

Cutter has almost as big a mouth as Tamara Holder. Is that a requirement to be a democratic party spokesdouche?

The Dem’s haven’t figures out that the reason they are losing is that they are looking desperate, not just Obama lost the debate.

Stephanie Cutter went BAT SHIT CRAZY on Bret Baier tonite on his show over her lies about Benghazi.

Either his producers cut Baier off via his earphone or Bret Baier should be fired. He let her get away with it.

Cutter was LAUGHING at the end.

It was disgusting.

She did look like a crazed lunatic, but godalmighty, Baier could have put her in her place and didn’t.

Just turned on Hardball, since I’ve already had one bourbon Manhattan. Everybody spray it, don’t say it!

GOD…I hate those people.

You can never have an honest government with secularists in charge. They have no morals or ethics.
