Stephanie Cutter: Benghazi is only an issue because of Romney and Ryan; Update: NYT more or less agrees

posted at 4:04 pm on October 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

The key bit comes in the last 20 seconds but I’m giving you four full minutes because I want you to watch her blithely assure CNN at the beginning that “the administration has been open and honest since day one about the Benghazi attack.” The administration she’s referring to there is the same one that had a dozen or so different intelligence reports flowing in within the first few hours after the attack pointing to an Al Qaeda connection and yet still sent Susan Rice out to lie to the media about a “spontaneous protest” five days later. CNN helpfully refreshes her memory with a lowlight reel of White House spin, whereupon a cornered flack falls back on her most basic impulse in a desperate situation: She blames the other party for making a big deal out of nothing. And by “nothing,” I mean the murder of the U.S. ambassador and three American consulate personnel.

Ace thinks this is a consummate Kinsleyan gaffe, revealing the Obama campaign’s survival instinct at its most rat-like in the aftermath of Benghazi. Could be, but it’s hard to picture Gibbs or Ben LaBolt saying something like this even in a desperate moment. There’s something here specific to Cutter herself and her Orwellian approach to spin. You saw another example of it just a few hours ago. There’s no reality too real that she won’t cheerfully deny it or blame the other side for it, no matter how highly stacked the facts are against her. The only person I can think of who operates the same way is Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and it makes both of them simply terrible spokesmen and liabilities for their party. I’m seeing calls in the last few hours for OFA to fire her for these comments, but I hope they don’t. She helps us more than she does them.

Update: Via Josh Trevino, it seems the “politicization” of the Benghazi attacks has discouraged the world’s most influential newspaper from devoting much coverage to Issa’s hearings. File this away mentally for when President Romney’s foreign policy is instantly “politicized” next year:

Baquet and Abramson’s remarks come in response to criticism from the paper’s own public editor, Margaret Sullivan, who objected to the editors decision not run its story about the hearings on today’s front page. Both the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal gave yesterday’s hearings prominent play on their front pages, above the fold. The Times placed its story on page A3.

Baquet, who oversees the paper’s afternoon editorial meeting, told Sullivan he “didn’t think there was anything significantly new in it.”

“It’s three weeks before the election and it’s a politicized thing, but if they had made significant news, we would have put it on the front,” he said.

Abramson, who described the paper’s Libya coverage as “excellent and very muscular,” also suggested the hearings were politicized, telling Sullivan that she had told editors “to weigh the news value against the reality that Congressional hearings are not all about fact-finding.”

Stephanie Cutter went BAT SHIT CRAZY on Bret Baier tonite on his show over her lies about Benghazi.

Either his producers cut Baier off via his earphone or Bret Baier should be fired. He let her get away with it.

Cutter was LAUGHING at the end.

It was disgusting.

She did look like a crazed lunatic, but godalmighty, Baier could have put her in her place and didn’t.

mountainaires on October 11, 2012 at 7:02 PM

I disagree. He let her run her mouth because A)he knew she was never gonna be straight with him and B)he could see she was committing career suicide(continuing what she started earlier on CNN) and didn’t want to get in the way.

Obama’s War on Women: Throwing Hillary, Susan Rice, and the Serpent Queen under the bus. How would that look if he fired three women in a short span of time? Boy is he in a pickle.

Beyonce and Julia hardest hit.

Cutter heads moves to the left alot when she appears to be lying and why does her head bob and weave as she talks. Is she fearing someone will throw a shoe at her and she practing ducking?

Also she is sick piece of work.Guess you must be to be a democrat.

Well, duh. Did you expect the Obama campaign to disagree with itself?

This is all a distraction from the REALLY IMPORTANT stuff people care about like “lady parts” and “Big Bird”…

Maybe I’m making a big deal out of nothing.

I think Obama’s doing Cutter on the side. I’m sure Barry had to strap a board to his a$$ to keep him from falling in.These people know no depths in their lies.

It is my fervent hope, that Obama get roundly spanked in November.

Translation for me: Romney and Ryan are the only ones who care that four Americans were killed in a terrorist attack.

Mark Levin just mentioned the poll that shows Romney ahead 51-44 in Florida.

Naturally Curly on October 11, 2012 at 7:10 PM

This compartmentalization bullsh!t that these Dems try to weave is weak sauce. It presumes that there is the realm of the political where weak points are scored on the other party, then the realm of foreign events where people actually die and get blown to pieces. She tries to spin a false dichotomy insofar as the foreign events are not, nor cannot be, interpreted through a political lens. She’s wrong, they can and they have to be. What is your problem, Stef?

She and the Democrats are all a$$hat$ – how they try to reduce everything to politics and worship pursuing power above all else. Worst administration in history for sure.

22044 on October 11, 2012 at 7:15 PM

WHO is politicizing the tragedy? Republicans were lied to and watched a coverup unfold and demanded an investigation. This little mouthpiece is the one trying to make the tragic (and preventable) deaths of four of our citizens about politics. More despicable behavior from the Obama campaign, what a surprise. Liars and cowards, all of them.

scalleywag on October 11, 2012 at 7:17 PM

And shall we ask again, where is Hillary?

scalleywag on October 11, 2012 at 7:18 PM

Wait. The first American ambassador is murdered in 30 years and it is an issue “only” because of Romney & Ryan???

Three others were murdered by Al Qaeda, who is supposedly “on its heels,” in a country “liberated” by Obama and it is an issue “only” because of Romney & Ryan???

The President of the United States and his administration have repeatedly lied to the American people and it is an issue “only” because of Romney & Ryan???

A man sitting in the Federal Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles on a parole violation without bail after being arrested in the middle of the night by 10 Federal officers with agents on a “parole violation.” His arrest was filmed and broadcast throughout the world. Our President and Secretary of State filmed a commercial and spent $70,000 apologising to the Pakistani people for the free speech of a man that they have now put in solitary confinement. The filmmaker may have violated his parole. I don’t know, but I’m an attorney and I know for a fact that a typical parole violation arrest doesn’t involve 10 Federal officers, a perp walk, camera crews, worldwide dissemination, and apology ads by the President and Secretary of State. They have put this man and his family’s lives in danger. This administration has endangered the lives of 7 other Americans and their families, who have been indicted in Egypt and while there is little likelihood of extradition, a conviction in Egypt, which would carry the death sentence would and will be an invitation for others to pull off Theo van Gogh-style executions here. And, it is an issue “only” because of Romney & Ryan???

These people need to be sent back to from whatever cesspools they slithered. They more than disgust me.

(And, I only wish that the words that I would use to describe Stephanie Cutter were not a “bannable offence.”)

I’m glad Obama’s campaign won’t cut Cutter loose. Every time she opens her mouth, it helps the Romney campaign.

Btw, WTF is she smiling about? We’re talking about four Americans slaughtered, and she wants to sit there smiling and smirking. Grow up, child.

Christien on October 11, 2012 at 7:23 PM

Meanwhile, Katie Pavlich asked her if she had any intention of resigning. Cutter said she did not, and fled the interview.

Drudge, meanwhile, refuses to elevate this to a major headline story, because, you know, he’s better than bloggers, and needs to differentiate himself.

Never mind all the REPORTERS who consider this to be an outrageous coverup conducted by this administration, far worse than anything Nixon was ever accused of doing. Ask Anderson Cooper why he “politicized” the deaths of four Americans. Filthy liars, that’s all this administration is, a bunch of filthy cowardly liars who could care less about the lives lost, they only care about winning the election.

Bumps in the road. Not that big a deal. Big Bird, Big Bird, Big Bird!

scalleywag on October 11, 2012 at 7:26 PM

This thing is amazing.

The smart thing that Cutter has done is try and drag Romney and Ryan into this as much as possible as to the average voter it’s a turn off and their enthusiasm with Romeny-Ryan will diminish.

I hate to say that with 4 dead americans that obama couldnt be bothered to protect, but it’s true.

Romney should have one standard statement and say he’s done and it’s congress’s job to determine where to lay blame and get back on the jobs and economy one-two punch.

cougar on October 11, 2012 at 7:29 PM

I think we finally found those shovel ready jobs…

Stephanie Cutter and DWS took them!

She also had no knowledge of the story of the guy who’s wife died of cancer… heh.

Scrappy on October 11, 2012 at 7:34 PM

they blamed an amateur film-maker, had him purp-walked in the middle of the night, and then had him JAILED ostensibly on a parole violation. How many parole violators do we see covered in every major news outlet?

It wasn’t even a “parole violation”, it was a “probation violation” which as Kimberly Gilfoyle correctly stated can be from a misdemeanor (like say, sending unsolicited pornographic tweets to young women like Anthony Weener did)…this was simply RIDICULOUS and a new low by an administration that has redefined the term “low”.
Btw Barky, how’s that investigation going into your corrupt thief best friend John Corzine’s MF Global and the “missing billion dollars” of investors money? Talk about a guy that should’ve been perp-walked?

Strike Hornet on October 11, 2012 at 7:41 PM

No one wants to get to the bottom of what happened in Benghazi than the Obama administration?

Sean Smith’s mother disagrees. Americans worried sick about their loved ones serving at our embassies and consulates disagree.

Yeah, but some psycho Dem operative with no skin in the game knows better?! Puh-lease!

Christien on October 11, 2012 at 7:42 PM

Strike Hornet on October 11, 2012 at 7:41 PM

Thanks for the correction. I had read that it was a parole violation, but I’ll go with KG’s statement on the facts. Obviously, neither warrant what has happened to him, which is TOTALLY UN-American and an outrageous abuse of power.

What kind of future careers do these people think they’re going to have after standing in front of the American people and spewing vile accusations that have nothing to do with the truth? Whose going to hire them when the Big Oaf loses the election?

scalleywag on October 11, 2012 at 7:59 PM

Cutter has almost as big a mouth as Tamara Holder. Is that a requirement to be a democratic party spokesdouche?

slickwillie2001 on October 11, 2012 at 7:01 PM

Did you happen to catch Michelle Malkin tell Tamara to “shush” a few months back on Hannity’s TV show? It was priceless.

Does anybody here happen to have a link to a clip of that?

sadsushi on October 11, 2012 at 8:04 PM

these words still ring true:
“What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger… take more of your money… give you more orders from Washington… and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world. ”
it shows more every day
the media hates the fact that the words she spoke were true and prophetic
they can never live that down, at least not to me and I hope some others.
the depth of their nefariousness in her media destruction is for someone else to debate, at some other time, but now it is time to start to make them toe a line

bryon york. This of course is a natural, and actually predictable, extension of the comments made by the one guy’s mother…not to talk about him

talking about bengahzi is sure to lead to upset on the part of the victims family etc.

you know, really, there is an expression about the left or the media or obama hitting a new low or hitting bottom

but the truth is there is no Low for these people, no bottom.

I saw that. Holder was so out of control that I think Hannity read her the riot act during a commercial break. After that she was less disruptive.

slickwillie2001 on October 11, 2012 at 8:23 PM

We should expect more of this kind of behavior from the WH Obamabots in the old media, because for many of them a loss by little Bammie is going to be a serious career hit. MSNBC can’t hire ALL of them. That makes it personal, -the mortgage, the kids in college, etc.

I had a hunch when I saw the speech on the Andrews tarmac. Hillary looked pissed. I felt in my gut that Obama had forced her into something that she felt got these people killed. I don’t like the shrew, but denying bodyguards in Behghazi in favor of Volts in Vienna smells like somehing so stupid, it could only have come from Obama’s political team. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Clinton and Panetta went rogue when they double crossed Obama by doing the inexcusable…teling the truth. The timing of her announcement also had the effect of cutting prize Obama/Jarrett protege Susan Rice off at the knees. Win-win for Hil.

Clinton has taken this moment to exact her revenge for 2007/2008 and when it comes to revenge, she’s a pro. Obama HAD to send someone out to say something and Cutter’s the only one slimy enough to go all in on a hand full of bullshit. If this doesn’t convince voters how truly evil this Administration is, God help us.
