Oh my: New Florida poll shows Romney up by seven overall — and up two among Latinos

posted at 7:11 pm on October 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

First real earthquake poll that I can recall at the state level, not unlike how Monday’s Pew national poll felt. I’m tempted to break out the mushroom cloud thumbnail, but … no, not yet. Let’s save that for the last two weeks.

Second look at that Suffolk pollster’s decision to stop polling Florida?

The survey conducted this week found 51 percent of likely Florida voters supporting Romney, 44 percent backing Obama and 4 percent undecided. That’s a major shift from a month ago when the same poll showed Obama leading 48 percent to 47 percent — and a direct result of what Obama himself called a “bad night” at the first debate.

The debate prompted 5 percent of previously undecided voters and 2 percent of Obama backers to move to Romney. Another 2 percent of Obama supporters said they are now undecided because of the debate…

Across the board, from who is better suited to improve the economy, to who will protect Medicare, to looking out for the middle-class, to handling foreign policy, likely Florida voters now favor the former Massachusetts governor over the president…

Especially ominous were the numbers for Hispanic voters, a demographic where the Obama campaign is banking on an advantage of at least 15 percentage points. The poll showed 44 percent of likely Hispanic voters favoring Obama and 46 for Romney, though the margin of error is higher with that smaller group of voters.

Among independents, an 11-point lead for Obama last month is now a 13-point lead for Romney, which jibes with the Mitt-mentum you’re seeing within that group across multiple polls. How bad is it for O? Dude:

Whose plans are more likely to do more long-term harm to Medicare? Obama 54 percent, Romney 40 percent.

Can’t tell from the sparse data here whether that result is a byproduct of the state shifting for Romney generally or something more particular to the specific issue as the Romney/Ryan message on entitlements penetrates, but it’s encouraging. I recommend following the link up top and reading the methodology on how the poll was conducted, as Team O is already spinning it as defective. Mason-Dixon, the pollster, uses a sample based on actual registration data to try to match it to the electorate; other pollsters typically don’t, which may help explain why only one other poll has shown a lead this big for either candidate in Florida since early August.

In lieu of the traditional HA celebration cameo from Humpbot, I offer you this new clip via Katie Pavlich and Townhall, which is far more enjoyable.

Romney signs have literally exploded all over the place and more every day. Obama signs, slim pickings. Some communities down here don’t allow the signs do go up until 1 month before election day, so now, they are popping up like mushrooms.

I’m guessing that the Latino trend may be due to they being almost exclusively Catholic. Catholic priests have been coming out very strongly with homilies forcefully directing Catholics that they cannot I good conscience vote for a candidate who supports abortion and gay marriage. I was at a mass outside of Chicago this past weekend and was stunned at how direct the priest was about not voting for Obama. In fact, he also stated that Catholics have to fight because it won’t be long before priests will be prosecuted for hate crimes for expressing themselves at the pulpit. He said as well that a fellow priest from Canada told him that religious people in this country had better start fighting for their beliefs or we’ll end up like Canada where there is legislation proposed to make it a hate crime to preach against gay marriage in church. Amazing stuff. I had a few atheist relatives at this mass (it was a funeral service) and they were really squirming in the pews. The priest must have noticed it because he said that if anyone feels uncomfortable by what he was saying then they “have drunk the koolaid.”

Good to save the cloud for the last weeks, unless something happens now that clearly calls for it. But also, you never know, if nothing happens that calls for it, be prepared for the possibility that the mushroom cloud just won’t be used at all. We’ll see.
What could call for a cloud? Romney up 10 nationally? Up in NJ? Up decently in every single swing state across multiple polls? Something unexpected is coming!

Paul Ryan is the 2nd most trending topic on Twitter. Joe Biden is the 8th. Why even have a debate?

Unless he/she was banned Trueking coined that phrase and I am sure he will be back again when the GOP fouls up to gloat and say I told you so.

Folks who spout nonsense around here often get treated like a troll. There is a reason you are treated like a troll. Clear enough?

No wonder now. When I read yesterday that DNC is pulling money out of FL due to “lost case” they sensed, along with VA, I was a bit apprehensive. Now its confirmed.

So, what’s next, Ohio? And most likely PA as well. That pretty much is the end game.

I see, thanks for the background of that phrase!

22044 on October 11, 2012 at 8:00 PM

It’d be more relevant for a state like say, Nevada. It’s a swing state and has a growing Hispanic population crooked union ballot-counting machine. Colorado too, although currently Romney’s advantage there negates that from being a decisive factor.

Jesus Christ, is there anything on TV tonight?

Lanceman on October 11, 2012 at 8:02 PM

But in fairness you go to HuffPo ,DKos and the like right and call them out for disrespecting our public servants and Presidents…right?

Heh.

CW on October 11, 2012 at 7:55 PM

I generally don’t read HuffPo and DKos. Most of the time I’m at Salon and Slate. And Yes I have called out my fellow Liberals for being hateful and intolerant. I’m prolife and believe it or not, liberals can be quite nasty to those that don’t believe in abortion and evolution.

Thank you for your honestly. I think here is the clear difference between a lot of Liberals and Conservatives. Lots of liberals ascertain truth from facts while a lot of conservatives ascribe truth to feelings.

Your welcome el rico

gerrym51 on October 11, 2012 at 8:03 PM

I truly believe Obama is evil. I mean how else can you explain a man in his powerful position encouraging the American people to turn on each other to benefit his reelection.

How else can you explain Obama willingly inciting violence across the world by blaming a movie trailer–knowing that was not true, just to hide his incompetence.

He’s evil. But what about all the others around him? The ones who know the truth. How do they sleep at night. Is he really worth selling their souls?

First real earthquake poll that I can recall at the state level, not unlike how Monday’s Pew national poll felt. I’m tempted to break out the mushroom cloud thumbnail, but … no, not yet. Let’s save that for the last two weeks.

Who are you and what have you done with Eeyore–I mean Allah?

Tell you what: You cure all of them and then we’ll talk.

And for the record, I’m pro-aborto. Keeps the liberal ‘rat population down. I always say “But for abortion, we’d be up to our necks in ‘rats and out of work people”.

i haven’t see anything post-debate from PA? Ohio polling is all over the place post-debate, hard to make any sense of it yet.

And MrScribbler’s been here for years. Banning him is like banning Dire Straits.

Never heard of MrScribbler. I have a machine that tracks DIRe though; but not very well. DIRe could be anywhere.
