Angry old man yells at Paul Ryan for 90 minutes; Update: CNN insta-poll of undecideds shows tie; Update: Ryan wins CNN insta-poll overall, 48/44

posted at 10:54 pm on October 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

I expected “table-pounding atmospherics” from Biden but I didn’t expect him to act like a total jackhole for fully 90 minutes. Give him credit for knowing his target audience, though: His task tonight was to get the left excited again after Obama fell into a semi-coma in Denver, and evincing utter disdain for Ryan — grimacing, shouting, laughing inappropriately, constantly interrupting, the total jackhole experience — is just what the doctor ordered. He might have irritated independents and undecideds, but probably not so much that it’ll change people’s votes. The Democrats needed someone to go out there and clown for liberals, and if there’s one thing this guy knows, it’s clowning.

Here’s a taste of what I mean via Mediaite, centered around one of Ryan’s more cutting lines of the evening. For what it’s worth, the media lost patience with Biden’s shtick too, but I doubt that’ll cost him anything tomorrow. And yes, needless to say, Raddatz was also terrible. Exit quotation from Greg Gutfeld: “Biden is the drunk at the bar; Martha is the unhappy bartender, and Ryan is the unfortunate salesman caught in the middle.”

Update: I’m waiting on the insta-polls, but in the meantime here’s an early candidate for the media’s consensus post-debate buzzword for Biden’s boorish performance: “Passion.”

Update: According to CNN, among the voters who really matter, it was a push:

CBS’s insta-poll had it 50/31 for Biden, although both candidates gained ground among undecideds. A CNBC website poll, meanwhile, had Ryan winning 56/36.

Update: Like I said, the jackhole approach works like a charm with its target audience. For others, eh, not so much:

Update: Some good news after an irritating night. Within the margin of error, but we’ll take it:

Update: That about sums it up:

Update: Via the Examiner, the setting and music reveal Joe Biden’s true calling: He would have been amazing as a regular on “Match Game.”

Update: Brand new from the RNC:

He was an ass but he controlled the space magnificently. Tomorrow all that will matter is that the CNN poll will declare him the winner

Being from WI, I’ve told you guys before that Ryan is smart as a whip, but has zero charisma. He also has no guts. He let himself get steamrolled and came across like wimp.

Biden was obnoxious and off-putting, so I don’t know how the whole thing played with the public.

gumbyandpokey on October 11, 2012 at 10:58 PM

Biden was cross.
And the moderatrix was quite eager to move to the next question whenever Ryan was gaining ground.
But for personal reasons, I’d like to hear more substantive analysis. There’s an election out there I’ve got to help to win.

Maybe, but I think Biden stopped the bleeding. The biggest issue for them was the enthusiasm gap and they rallied their base tonite and they might have scared some independents enough to support them too. Ryans response was inadequate.

Valkyriepundit on October 11, 2012 at 10:59 PM

An abomination. Biden embarrassed himself on that stage. And Raddatz has no business moderating anything at all. I think she forgot at times that she was supposed to be facilitating discussion, not shouting at Ryan too.

Good lord, what a joke.

Irritable Pundit on October 11, 2012 at 11:01 PM

And yes, needless to say, Raddatz was also terrible.

That bias was absolutely criminal. Obama must have given her a helluva wedding gift.

She should be barred from participation in future debates. Period. Every single GOP campaign must veto her in future cycles. To do otherwise would be political malpractice.

I think CNN has it at a draw, while CNBC gave it to Ryan in their snap-poll. NBC will inevitable scream on the rooftops how Grandpa won with flying colors, while ABC will probably go the CNN route.

OH, AND BIDEN CONTRADICTED HIS OWN STATE DEPARTMENT, LOL.

Aizen on October 11, 2012 at 11:02 PM

What I find interesting is that Paul Ryan probably won this debate solely because he had a heckling hyena on the other side of the screen. And Palin probably lost her debate with Biden based on the 3-4 winks she did. But on substance, Palin probably out did Paul Ryan.

Considering Biden is another 4 years older and rusty not having debated in 4 years and also that Palin had far less time on national issues then Paul Ryan, I think that is kind of interesting considering the perceptions of Ryan’s and Palin’s intellect.

Barackabiden were obviously playing to the Left/their base. Ryan playing for those wanting seriousness.

SouthernGent on October 11, 2012 at 11:03 PM

I think, for Romney/Ryan’s sake, this worked out pretty well. Biden certainly didn’t hit a homerun. Ryan was more than respectable (and RESPECTFUL) and Biden contradicted State Dept Release about Libya. So, all in all, I think Ed’s believe this won’t change anything is slightly wrong but de facto right. The danger tonight was that Ryan would be crushed, biden likable and the bleeding for liberals would stop. I don’t think this stops any bleeding. I think it did more for Romney Ryan than Obama Biden.

WashingtonsWake on October 11, 2012 at 11:03 PM

Does anyone else think foreign policy discussion took an inordinate amount of time? And it just so happens that that’s a subject where Biden and Ratlady could appear superior just because of their experience and knowledge on details.

BettyRuth on October 11, 2012 at 11:03 PM

Raddatz was horrible. I actually defended her prior to the debate, but she was AWFUL. She couldn’t contain her clear affinity for Biden and let him talk on and on and on, and she ALLOWED him to get away with that rude boorish interrupting constantly and his obnoxious derision and shocking disrespect for the other candidate.

This was NOT a good act; Biden’s unfavorables were high before the debate. That act won’t improve his favorables.

After last week their base was depressed, Reps were about 10 points more enthusiastic about voting than Dems and they were in a vicious cycle, not being able to spin the debate and the ridiculous Big Bird desaster afterwards. Biden might have put a stop to that. He may have looked like a jerk to indies, but libs saw somebody fighting today and that worked wonders for us last week.

It’s one thing for a VP to be an attack dog.

It’s another thing for a VP to be acting like he was sniffing glue for two hours before the debate began.

I can’t see this as being helpful for Obama. Even if I was an Obama supporter I would have gotten frustrated with Biden’s demeanor and actions.

History shows that this kind of histrionics does not play well after the debate. And Biden took it to a whole new level.

“The Bleeding” in the polls wasn’t independents. They’ve been up 5-10 points for Romney for months in nearly every poll. It was the base enthusiasm down so far a D+9/D+12 or even D+3 poll wasn’t just laughably wrong, but embarrassing.

There was no way for Biden to shore up BOTH the base and the independents, so they had to pick. they went for the base, and at least avoided that open wound from continuing another month.

Obama will try for the center in the next debate to hope for the rest… that’s my guess anyhow.

An angry, ornery, loud performance from Biden does nothing to improve their standing with indies.

Biden sucked a big cawk tonight. People with half a brain saw it.
