Angry old man yells at Paul Ryan for 90 minutes; Update: CNN insta-poll of undecideds shows tie; Update: Ryan wins CNN insta-poll overall, 48/44

posted at 10:54 pm on October 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

I expected “table-pounding atmospherics” from Biden but I didn’t expect him to act like a total jackhole for fully 90 minutes. Give him credit for knowing his target audience, though: His task tonight was to get the left excited again after Obama fell into a semi-coma in Denver, and evincing utter disdain for Ryan — grimacing, shouting, laughing inappropriately, constantly interrupting, the total jackhole experience — is just what the doctor ordered. He might have irritated independents and undecideds, but probably not so much that it’ll change people’s votes. The Democrats needed someone to go out there and clown for liberals, and if there’s one thing this guy knows, it’s clowning.

Here’s a taste of what I mean via Mediaite, centered around one of Ryan’s more cutting lines of the evening. For what it’s worth, the media lost patience with Biden’s shtick too, but I doubt that’ll cost him anything tomorrow. And yes, needless to say, Raddatz was also terrible. Exit quotation from Greg Gutfeld: “Biden is the drunk at the bar; Martha is the unhappy bartender, and Ryan is the unfortunate salesman caught in the middle.”

Update: I’m waiting on the insta-polls, but in the meantime here’s an early candidate for the media’s consensus post-debate buzzword for Biden’s boorish performance: “Passion.”

Update: According to CNN, among the voters who really matter, it was a push:

CBS’s insta-poll had it 50/31 for Biden, although both candidates gained ground among undecideds. A CNBC website poll, meanwhile, had Ryan winning 56/36.

Update: Like I said, the jackhole approach works like a charm with its target audience. For others, eh, not so much:

Update: Some good news after an irritating night. Within the margin of error, but we’ll take it:

Update: That about sums it up:

Update: Via the Examiner, the setting and music reveal Joe Biden’s true calling: He would have been amazing as a regular on “Match Game.”

Update: Brand new from the RNC:

urban elitist on October 12, 2012 at 8:04 AM

Was Joe Biden’s performance last night what you want out of your VP? Honestly. Is that what you expect from a “big dog”?

Joe Biden told lie after lie yesterday. Yet, you think he did a great job because he put down his opponent, talked with passion, and smiled like an idiot. Nevertheless, that cannot hide the fact that Biden lied, offered no new ideas, and gave one of the most disgraceful performances that I have ever seen.

And you know how you should know that you are wrong about your take of the debate – the liberal media, which was dying to give Biden the night, could not give him the night (aside from the equally idiotic Chris Matthews, who has morphed into an equally cartoonish figure). That is telling.

milcus on October 12, 2012 at 10:06 AM

A tie? There’s a reason they’re called “undecideds”. Anyone who can’t decide between these two choices is clinically brain dead. I suggest we begin labeling them the “apathetic”.

cajunpatriot on October 12, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Dems think Biden did great because he was brash and assertive.
Repub think he was mean and not nice to that Ryan lad because Joe was brash and assertive.
So it’ll about where you were going in – pretty simple.
I’d be ok conceding a ‘draw’ here – but it’s laughable to think Biden didn’t get the better of Ryan on the substantive stuff.
Ryan came off well, was well spoken (if a bit robotic), and didn’t do any harm with the base.
But as much as you wanna scream ‘lie!’ at Biden – he didn’t.
If anything he called bullsh*t on bullsh*t.
Now if you are already buying the bs – I can understand your dismay.
But many times Biden managed to decimate to Romney campaign talking points. He literally (to use one of his favorite words) laughed them off and laughed at them.
A good show all around.
At the end…you wanted to buy Biden a beer – and you wanted to make Ryan some nice warm soup and put him to bed.

The Dems I watched it with we’re embarrassed of Biden. All agreed that Ryan was far more presidential and likable. Biden repulsed the very people whose support he is trying to win.

Biden misfired badly. Obama-Biden is now 0 for 2 in the debates. Voters are not reacting well to the Obama-Biden ticket the more they see them unscripted. Opposite is true for Romney and Ryan, who continue to surge as voters see and hear more from them unfiltered.

This does not bode well for Obama’s chances. Voters continue to move toward Romney in the final weeks.

“Gumbo pokemon is now hanging his hat on the Senate polls!!!!!

anchorman on October 12, 2012 at 10:30 AM”

Control of the Senate is a pretty big deal.

And Thompson was considered the heavy favorite, and his ability to win the seat is the only reason he won the primary. Turns out he had zero money, Baldwin ad-bombed him, and he’s been badly behind ever since with high unfavorable’s (due to the negative ads).

gumbyandpokey on October 12, 2012 at 10:36 AM

gumbyandpokey on October 12, 2012 at 10:24 AM

MA voters must really hate Warren. The state is 3 to 1 Dem and she is barely limping along? Looks like she could very well lose. An unlikable fraud like Elizabeth Warren is someone a MA resident would be embarrassed to have to admit supporting. Can’t say I’ll feel bad for Warren when she loses.

As I said before, I think initially Biden’s laugh etc. came off badly. But as the evening continued it became quite effective. Aside from those Dem pals of yours, Dems and Obama supporters liked this – a lot.
This is the push back they didn’t get from Obama with Romney.
Repubs…didn’t like Joe – as before. They have an ingrained charicature of the guy and this helped affirm it for them.
But for the undecided – where this will matter in the end –
Biden won it hands down.
CBS poll just up shows 50% say Joe won with 19% saying it was a tie.
This was no knockout – but Biden was effective where and how he needed to be.

Transcript: Vice Presidential Debate

I want to correct a misstatement by Paul Ryan:

[RYAN]: Or remember when he [Obama] said,

“I promise by the end of my first term I’ll cut the deficit in half in four years”?

We’ve had four budgets, four trillion-dollar deficits.

We have indeed had four Trillion-dollar deficits under Obama and Biden.

But we have not had four budgets.

We last had a budget when Obama signed the FY 2009 budget.

We did not have a budget for FY 2010.

We did not have a budget for FY 2011.

We did not have a budget for FY 2012.

And we do not yet have a budget for FY 2013, which started eleven days ago, on October 1, 2012.

I am more than a bit disappointed that Paul Ryan did not hit Joe Biden hard with the fact that Biden has been President of the Senate the entire time that the Senate has broken the law and failed to pass a budget for FY 2010, FY 2011, FY 2012, and now FY 2013.

If Biden were doing his Constitutional job, he would be presiding over the Senate every day and putting pressure on that body to fulfill its legal obligation to pass a budget.

Unfortunately, the sane people will also have to go along on this ride to hell.

Sterling Holobyte on October 12, 2012 at 11:05 AM

The facts are, no VP debate has ever won or lost the election…it has come closer to “losing” than to winning however.

Quayle was destroyed by Bentsen (I knew Jack Kennedy and you are no Jack Kennedy), ever hear of VP Bentsen?

Conversely, Cheney destroyed, utterly destroyed Edwards…but Bush destroyed Gore…the sighing face making Gore…see something there?

The fact that it was essentially a tie, with Biden making weird faces and pandering to his base…this debate leaves the race exactly where it was before the debate…

Romney has the momentum…the next debate is on foreign policy, with all that is happening, who do you think has the edge there?

She is obviously in the tank for Obama and the democrats. Every time someone tries to make a point, the other person should snicker, laugh, interrupt and just be rude.

But I imagine if husbands try this, there will be another day from wives ,
it will be called
“you will never get any sex from me you bleep-hole day(or week month or year)“
