State Dep’t rep: “We had the correct number of [security] assets in Benghazi”

posted at 4:41 pm on October 10, 2012 by Allahpundit

Three pitiful minutes from today’s House Oversight hearing, revolving around whether a cable that “requested” more security in Libya was enough of a clue to State that … more security was being requested. Eric Nordstrom, who was on the ground, didn’t think the number was “correct”; neither did Andy Wood, who told CBS the other day that if the embassy in Tripoli had had a bigger security detail, some members surely would have joined Chris Stevens on his trip to Benghazi. But don’t miss the forest for the trees: State’s negligence here doesn’t depend on the precise number of security personnel needed under normal protocols, it derives from the glaring fact that Libya’s security situation was the opposite of “normal” and had been for the better part of a year. In Wood’s memorable phrase, Al Qaeda is more established there than we are. This was no time for a “light footprint” or even an average one. If the Department couldn’t provide Stevens with security equal to the task of handling an all but inevitable terror attack, they should have pulled him from the country. But then, we’re dealing here with people who can’t bring themselves to describe the attackers as “terrorists” even now. Like I said, pitiful.

After you watch Charlene Lamb’s testimony, watch Shep Smith try to control his anger over State’s blindness to the plain truth about Libya. Exit question: Are House Democrats right that reduced congressional funding for embassy security contributed to Stevens’s fate? Exit answer: No. But even if they were, more Democrats voted for that reduction than Republicans did.

ICanSeeNovFromMyHouse on October 10, 2012 at 4:47 PM

1. There is no way we had the “correct” number because a correct number would have meant our people were protected. That is, unless you consider what happened to be the “correct” outcome, then yes, we had the correct number. To believe we had the “correct” number means you must believe that the State Dept. wanted those people dead.

2. The notion was put out that security was not increased because we had never had an attack of this level of ferocity before. That implies that security would not be increased until we had an attack of that level of ferocity. Well, we had one. Did we increase security AFTER 9/11? No, we ran away and evacuated the country. So even the statement that we needed a ferocious attack in order to justify additional security is belied by events.

This stinks to high heaven.

tomg51 on October 10, 2012 at 4:48 PM

Watched the entire hearing start to finish. It was an absolute bloodletting.

It is shamefully clear that the Obama administration tried to spin the attack as a spontaneous demonstration against a YouTube video in an attempt to avoid the political damage from having an Ambassador die at the hands of terrorists on September 11 under his watch.

Watch for a resignation from Ambassador Susan Rice over the next weeks as Obama desperately tries to keep “the buck” from reaching his desk.

It appeared to us that the assets, and their logistical situation, did not, not need to be evalutated, in light of not having previously not taken into consideration that those assets were not evaluated prior thereto, inasmuch as the non-evalution of having non-assets available was only due to not having not evaluated the previous non-evaluation concerning this, previously heretofore non-matter.

That is the collective thought of all important assests in the State Department.

Lamb is the State official responsible for not just refusing additional security assets, but reducing the assets already on hand. She was slaughtered. She is clearly some mid-level hack who was just doing what she was told. But what she was told was wrong, she f*cked up, and people died. Now she is trying to parse words and hairsplit, but too late.

The entire hearing was maddening. That fool Kennedy actually said that anyone from State, political or career, would have said what Rice said days after they KNEW it was an attack, discounting all the other reports in favor of a single alleged intel assessment.

Nordstrom and Wood stood firm on their testimony that it was obvious that threats were growing and security was inadequate. In fact, Nordstrom final testimony was that the hardest part of his job wasn’t terrorist threats, but getting assets he needed form State. He said,”For me, the Taliban is on the inside of the building.”

Time to get Hillary and Susan Rice before the committee, under oath.

Congress Holds First Hearing on U.S. Consulate Attack in Libya

Washington, DC
Wednesday, October 10, 2012

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed September 11th in an assault on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Wednesday, the full House Oversight and Government Reform Committee meets to detail the security situation leading up to the attack.

U.S. officials believe Stevens, a career diplomat who worked with the Libyan resistance before Qaddafi’s overthrow, was killed by al-Qaeda affiliated insurgents who used the protest over an anti-Islamic film as cover for their assault on the U.S. Consulate compound.

The attack was just one of a series of assaults on foreign facilities in Libya. According to several foreign policy experts, pro-Qaddafi holdouts and violent insurgents are taking advantage of political instability to threaten Libya’s slowly emerging democracy.

The murder of Ambassador Stevens highlights the deteriorating political situation in the North African country since the fall of Moammar Qaddafi.

In response to the attack, President Obama said the United States “condemns in the strongest terms this shocking attack.” He also stated that diplomatic posts around the world will all increase security.

Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) has called Under Secretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy to testify alongside Deputy Assistant Director for International Programs Charlene Lamb and Eric Nordstrom, the former State Department Regional Security Officer for Libya.
