Romney won’t tell story of meeting former SEAL killed in Benghazi after SEAL’s mom objects Update: Widow of another SEAL says Romney mention ‘greatest honor’

posted at 2:41 pm on October 10, 2012 by Mary Katharine Ham

The Romney campaign has vowed not to tell the story of Romney’s chance meeting with the late Glen Doherty anymore, as Doherty’s mother objected to it publicly. Romney related a tale of meeting the “impressive” young man at a Christmas party, on the trail Tuesday. Doherty was killed in the attacks on the Benghazi consulate in Libya last month.

Mitt Romney’s campaign said today he will stop citing his meeting with a former Navy Seal killed in last month’s terror attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya after the victim’s mother protested his use of her son’s death.

“He shouldn’t make my son’s death part of his political agenda. It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama,” said Barbara Doherty, the mother of the slain Navy Seal Glen Doherty.

She added, “I don’t trust Romney.”

You can watch the clip, in which Romney doesn’t use Doherty’s name, and decide if that’s what he was doing, but the campaign is of course right to respect her wishes. I know it’s impossible for me to post a moment from a presidential candidate without political implications, but truly, what’s striking about this story is the remarkable coincidence that led Mitt Romney to have had a personal encounter with Doherty, who ended up at the tragic center of this story this month. From a pure human interest angle, it’s fascinating, and clearly told with respect and in good faith by Romney:

For what it’s worth, I hope Romney’s short-lived mention of the circumstances of Doherty’s death, in which he was going above and beyond to serve and save others, leads to a wider understanding of his heroism.

In comments that have gotten far less coverage, the mother of former SEAL Tyrone Woods, also killed that day in Benghazi, took to her Facebook page to object to the administration’s handling of the investigation of the attack:

Don’t want to ever politicize the loss of my son in Libya, but it has been 16 days and the FBI has yet to get to Benghazi to begin their investigation. Apparently they have made it to Tripoli but haven’t been allowed to enter Benghazi. Meanwhile, the diplomatic outpost where Tyrone and Glen died, was not and is not secured. Absolutely unacceptable.

Update: The other side of this coin is Jane Horton, the widow of Navy SEAL Chris Horton, killed in action in Afghanistan:

Jane Horton began crying on the other end of the phone when she learned that Mitt Romney had been using the story of her husband, Chris Horton, who was killed in Afghanistan, as a part of his stump speech.

“Wow,” the 26-year-old said. “I had no idea.

“To be honest, I’ve been through a lot and I’m not a super emotional person but it brings me to tears,” Horton said in an interview with ABC News, after being informed of her husband’s newfound spot on the national stage. “Not that he’s telling my story, but that he’s telling my husband’s story, it means the world to me.

And, the quote Romney should put on his bathroom mirror for inspiration:

“One of the last things my husband said to me before he was killed, when I would ask him, ‘Chris, what do you need over there? What can I send you?’ he said, ‘I need a new president,’” Horton recalled.

Her husband had done some work in the Oklahoma Romney office in 2008, and Romney tracked Jane down in 2011 after he heard of his death, sending her a hand-written note. The two wrote back and forth several times:

They first spoke when Romney wrote her a handwritten letter after Chris was killed. It was Oct. 1, 2011, Horton said, re-reading the letter as she spoke, remembering that she was shocked Romney had put two and two together — that one of his many staffers had been killed and he’d figured out a way to find his wife.

A few months later, Horton still touched by Romney’s outreach and thinking about her husband’s support of the candidate, decided to send the candidate his name tape — the part of a soldier’s uniform that displays his last name.

Jane, who I had the privilege of meeting at the Republican National Convention when she was serving as an Oklahoma delegate, calls it the “greatest honor” that Romney is getting out the story of her husband, which is exactly what he would have wanted.

Romney won’t tell story of meeting former SEAL killed in Benghazi after SEAL’s mom objects
…BUT OBOZO continues to run his BIG BIRD ad even after BIG BIRD tells him to stop !!!!!

The Big Bird d-cRAT FAT CATS….

The woman who founded the Children’s Television Workshop, which created Sesame Street, is a maxed-out contributor to the Obama campaign and a significant donor to the Obama-backing Priorities USA Super PAC, campaign finance records show.

Joan Ganz Cooney contributed the the maximum $35,800 to the Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee, plus an additional $30,400 that could be distributed by the “Obama Victory Fund” to state parties. She then gave $50,000 to the Priorities USA Super PAC that is backing Obama’s re-election.

Additionally, records show that Cooney gave $30,800 to the Democratic National Committee Services Corporation in 2011 and 2012 and $30,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2011.

According to the latest Internal Revenue Service Form 990 financial disclosure that Sesame Workshop has made public, its total revenue for 2009 was about $130 million. Of that, about $7.9 million came directly from government grants.

Big Bird gets program fees from stations, too. Sesame Workshop lists $27 million in content distribution revenue. Some of that comes from federal dollars funneled to local PBS entities, though the Form 990 doesn’t break that out.

Uber-1%-er: Sesame Workshop president and CEO Gary Knell got $684,144 in reportable compensation from his job.

Navy Seal Glen Doherty died as a direct result of obama’s failed policies, but, he did not die for obama, he died for America – it’s sad that Barbara Doherty doesn’t see it that way.

Brandon Webb, another former SEAL and Doherty’s best friend, was with Doherty when he met Romney and remembers Romney reintroducing himself twice.
“Glen and I both gave him a hard time when he reintroduced himself to us a second time. Mitt took it well and we all had a good laugh about it,” said Webb, managing editor of SOFREP.com, for which Doherty was a contributing writer.
But he remembers Doherty being respectful about Romney.
“Glen was very respectful about our encounter with Mitt Romney. That was the kind of guy Glen was. He respected everyone regardless of their differences and that’s what made him such a great human being,” he said.

I thought it was one of those stories that make you realize how much simply talking to a stranger can change your life. 10 years ago I met a guy in a bar and ended up going to Iraq in 2005 because I played a game of darts (loooong story, heh). It’s spooky to think about how different my life would be right now if I had not been feeling less-than-normally introverted that night after a good day at work.

I didn’t see Romney scoring any points with that story, but I understand him respecting a family member’s wishes about that kind of thing.

Still not enough information to say the mom is politicizing this the other way, but if she truly wants the candidates and the media to retrospect her family’s privacy, what we will not be seeing is Barbara Doherty on MSNBC or any of the other liberal media outlets over the next few days attacking Mitt Romney.

If she goes on multiple shows and gives multiple interviews attacking Romney to try and pump up the candidate whose inaction got her son killed, then we’re actually dealing with someone even more partisanly hostile to the right than Ms. Sheehan (whose son at the very least did die in service of his country while George W. Bush was in office). Going on the attack against Romney when your son died while Obama is in the White House and because of mistakes by his advisers and State Department is so head-scratchingly odd that even some media people might have a hard time not asking Doherty about the seeming contradiction.

The mother is sadly a political hack.

Questions to ask:

Why was Stevens in Benghazi when he’d just returned from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and on such days as 9/11, all ambassadors are supposed to be at the most secure spots in the embassies, not at outposts and consulates, not to speak of safe houses?

Why did NO one shoot back at the attackers? Because the guns were not loaded.

Why all the other items, lax security, cover up, video.

Hillary has not been seen but she looks like hell ever since the return of the casket, the announcement of the death, really. She knows what you don’t know, yet. This will turn out to have been a huge clusterfark and cover up, for many political and PC reasons, but ultimately for Obama’s drive to help his brothers and harm the US.

And you trust Romney. That’s all we need to know about you.

Dante on October 10, 2012 at 3:01 PM

Did Romney get her son killed and call him a speedbump ?

burrata on October 10, 2012 at 3:09 PM

Glen Doherty, may he RIP, was with some organization that fights evangelism in the military, so he was probably one of the few Democrat leaning SEALS. This has nothing to do with his quality as a man and a fighter. Apparently he was exemplary, and I honor his service. But it does perhaps shed a bit a light on his family’s political leanings. Just speculation on my part though.

juliesa on October 10, 2012 at 3:09 PM

I can’t imagine what she’s going through but the “I don’t trust Romney” should have been left out.

It was a touching story.

gophergirl on October 10, 2012 at 3:09 PM

She added, “I don’t trust Romney.”

That’s fair enough – you shouldn’t trust any of them.

CorporatePiggy on October 10, 2012 at 3:09 PM

I’m sure that mother is grieving tremendously over the loss of her son but I wonder if she actually saw the video of Romney telling the story. What I saw was Romney describing how he randomly met a man he saw to be honorable, brave and a true hero. Unless they didn’t show it in the video I watched, he never mentioned the Seal’s name nor did he say anything about Obama. But, she objected and Romney won’t tell the story again. I think that alone is telling as to what kind of man Mitt Romney is.

KateNE on October 10, 2012 at 3:10 PM

She doesn’t trust Romney, but not only did the Obama administrations failures lead to his death, but the administration is now tangled up in a web of lies and cover up that now make the horrible situation a national scandal.

Ellis on October 10, 2012 at 3:10 PM

There are liars from the right. They claim, like Obama, that he lost the debate because he was too polite.

Cindy Sheehan destroyed herself and her family. NO one else did.

Btw, she is running as VP with Roseanne Barr.

Schadenfreude on October 10, 2012 at 3:10 PM

Changer he didn’t mention the soldier name so would you think you still needed an ok

cmsinaz on October 10, 2012 at 3:03 PM

Good observation…it escaped me…he didn’t mention any names indeed, which shows how considerate he was (people wouldn’t have even known which one of the navy seals he was talking about until the press barged in with the details)…not mentioning him by name was also a good ‘disclaimer’, in these crazy times we live in, you never know…

“One of the last things my husband said to me before he was killed, when I would ask him, ‘Chris, what do you need over there? What can I send you?’ he said, ‘I need a new president,’” Horton recalled.

I’m guessing Jane Horton won’t be sharing a hug with Mrs. Doherty

Changer he didn’t mention the soldier name so would you think you still needed an ok

cmsinaz on October 10, 2012 at 3:03 PM

That’s a good point, but I still think you do out of an abundance of caution. You know the media is looking for anything they can to play up to make him look bad, so I think you try to minimize those opportunities as much as possible.

Again, not a huge deal though. They’ve honored her wishes, and that is that.

changer1701 on October 10, 2012 at 3:11 PM

I imagine this will get it bumped up to a personal letter now.

tsagen on October 10, 2012 at 3:11 PM

I don’t understand. Why wouldn’t she appreciate that someone very publicly honored her son and what he did? Doesn’t make sense to me, kinda fishy.

kg598301 on October 10, 2012 at 3:13 PM

I wonder if Mrs. Doherty has received her form letter from Obama expressing his faux sympathy and thanks for her son’s service?

TXUS on October 10, 2012 at 3:14 PM

How to make Romney bad, again…poor Tomasky.

The land saw the two men, in plane light. Nothing will change for what America saw.

In 2004 many pro/con Bush women were parading on TV. It made no difference. Too sad that this topic is even up for discussion.

Obama’s negligence and PC had the 4 men killed. This week and the next few will out many things not in the news, yet, on Benghazi.

Schadenfreude on October 10, 2012 at 3:14 PM

I don’t know why you wouldn’t get permission first before you talk about her son who died in the line of duty.

There’s a story in the headlines about a different reaction of a wife of a slain serviceman who is greatful that Romney is talking about him.

Vince on October 10, 2012 at 3:05 PM

He was a grown man, not a teenager. Why should anyone have to get his mother’s consent to talk about his bravery and heroism? This is ridiculous.

rockmom on October 10, 2012 at 3:14 PM

He retold the story during today’s rally.. .and mentioned Glen Doherty by name this time which he didn’t do yesterday… hmmm

gatorboy on October 10, 2012 at 3:14 PM

What an idiot this woman is shema on her and i agree how much was she paid!!!

Zcat on October 10, 2012 at 3:14 PM

obviously the left sees that story as dangerous. Sorry for the cynical take…actually, very sorry.

if she wouldn’t have said the ‘degrade Obama’ and the trust Mitt part then i’d say great, fine…leave it be. But how was mitt using her son to degrade deal leader? Dept of State just degraded barry night, abc news, gently, degraded barry last night.

i basically agree with her that someone’s death should not be a political football…but then i’m not a leftist

r keller on October 10, 2012 at 3:14 PM

I’m sure it’s not at all political with her !!
burrata on October 10, 2012 at 2:45 PM
It doesn’t matter. She lost a son. If she goes all Sheehan, then this can be revisited.
cozmo on October 10, 2012 at 2:50 PM

Exactly, and if you bad-mouth her or question her motives, you’ll get deleted or banned. Have as much respect as the Romney camp has had for her. It’s a far better way to honor her son’s memory than lashing out at her because she happens to like Obama or not like Romney.

Mary Katharine Ham on October 10, 2012 at 3:14 PM

Yup changer

cmsinaz on October 10, 2012 at 3:15 PM

This woman I’m sure had absolutely no problem when her son’s coffin was used as a backdrop for Obama’s campaign speech and televised all over.

burrata on October 10, 2012 at 2:56 PM

No kidding. Obama used her son’s coffin as a prop for a political speech, in which he deliberately and blatantly lied and blamed the YouTube video for the Benghazi attack, at a time when he knew damn well that it had been a pre-planned AQ terrorist attack that had nothing to do with that stupid video. Obama needed a scapegoat for the attack, so his idiotic and incompetent foreign policies would not hinder his effort to get re-elected.

Did she express any outrage about that?

AZCoyote on October 10, 2012 at 3:15 PM

How ungrateful. This man was speaking highly of your son and you object. Would she objected if Obama did it?

Tasha on October 10, 2012 at 3:04 PM

But obama did do it; kill her so, that is, in the same way he killed osama bin laden. You can’t have it one way without the other (unless you are a knee jerk librul puke)

Old Country Boy on October 10, 2012 at 3:15 PM

Maybe, but they apparently didn’t talk to the widow whose husband was killed in Afghanistan…she had no idea he was talking about it. Fortunately she’s a Romney supporter, but still.
Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of the campaign, and I do still believe the mother’s politics are driving her objection.

Team romney should know media will try to insert conflict , they should be prepared.

I’ve heard Romney tell that story twice, and in no way was he using it to “degrade” Obama. He was honoring her son. Obama, on the other hand, covered up the reasons for their deaths and would prefer we forget about them.

changer1701 on October 10, 2012 at 3:08 PM

Well , the simple truth degrades Obama.
But media just dont want to let it through.
