Reuters: State never responded to two requests for more security in Benghazi

posted at 10:01 am on October 10, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Former State Department security officer Eric Nordstrom will testify today to the House Oversight Committee about the security failures that led to the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi and the assassination of our Ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens.  Reuters got an advance look at his prepared testimony last night, and reports that not only did Nordstrom repeatedly request more security for the diplomatic mission, the State Department didn’t even bother to respond to his last two requests:

A U.S. security officer twice asked his State Department superiors for more security agents for the American mission in Benghazi months before an attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, but he got no response.

The officer, Eric Nordstrom, who was based in Tripoli until about two months before the September attack, said a State Department official, Charlene Lamb, wanted to keep the number of U.S. security personnel in Benghazi “artificially low,” according to a memo summarizing his comments to a congressional committee that was obtained by Reuters.

Nordstrom also argued for more U.S. security in Libya by citing a chronology of over 200 security incidents there from militia gunfights to bomb attacks between June 2011 and July 2012. Forty-eight of the incidents were in Benghazi.

No response? That’ a stunning revelation, especially considering the corner of the world in which this took place.  The fall of Moammar Qaddafi allowed the radical Islamist terrorist groups in the region to operate openly, a completely foreseeable consequence of the long-distance decapitation of the Qaddafi regime.  The string of attacks, now even greater than we were first led to believe, shows why Nordstrom wanted more security in place.  To refuse to even respond to those requests is as blatant a dereliction of duty that one can imagine.

ABC’s Jake Tapper hears the same about Nordstrom’s testimony:

ABC News has learned that Eric Nordstrom, the former Regional Security Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Libya, has told congressional investigators that security at the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, was “inappropriately low” – and believed that State Department officials stood in the way of his attempts to change that. …

Nordstrom was worried -he did not know how much the Americans could rely on members of a local Libyan militia in Benghazi that provided security — the “17th of February Martyrs Brigade.” Mostly merchants and shopkeepers before the war, they seemed eager, but they hadn’t much experience and other than a daily $30 stipend for food from the U.S. Embassy, they hadn’t been paid in months.

Nordstrom had “no idea if they would respond to an attack,” he told investigators.

As it turns out, the State Department hadn’t paid them in months.  Why would they respond?  Plus, Tapper confirms that State never bothered to answer his requests for increased security:

Nordstrom twice wrote to the State Department – in March and July 2012 — to beef up the presence of American security officers in Benghazi, but neither time was there a response. At no point from December 2011 through July 2012, when he left Libya, were more than three Diplomatic Security Service agents permanently and simultaneously stationed at the Benghazi post.

At the very least, this is incompetence that borders on the criminal.  It shows that this administration created a situation in eastern Libya that it failed to comprehend, and has allowed al-Qaeda and other Islamist terrorists their first real victory over the US since the original 9/11 — and that the administration has been trying to cover it up ever since.

This is a scandal that is not going away.
I even heard CBS do a fairly reasonable report on it last night.
After Lara Logan spoke before the BGA in front of 1,100 Washington and media power brokers and told them they are being lied to even the old media are feeling the shame of their dereliction of duty on this story.

Chris Stevens was left to fend for himself in the most dangerous embassy in the world and this lies at the feet of the Clinton State Dept. and the Obama White House.
No one else.
What is even worse is that they lied about it and pushed all their media cronies to lie about it too and they are feeling betrayed by the White House.

This administrations feckless incompetence and naive foreign policy have made the world a more dangerous place for our citizens. Mr. Obama has abandoned a sound defense and diplomatic strategy for political goals which are sonorous to his supporters.

This strategy has left us more vulnerable to terrorists and allowed Al Qaeda to grow stronger and obviously more bold in their actions.

The only military gains made against Al Qaeda and terrorists by Mr. Obama have come from following the policies of previous administrations. Certainly, he is making the decisions. But those are decisions which are clearly and without question in the interest of our country. I dare say no other president would refuse to make those calls.

However, what Mr. Obama can not point to are any specific policies formulated by his administration which directly decreased the threat of Al Qaeda. In fact, what he has done is make it more dangerous with his naive actions in the Middle East which is no more dangerous and volatile then ever before.

So now, on the anniversary of September 11th, knowing all we do from the past years, four Americans including an ambassador are murdered. It was one of the follow-up attacks which for years we knew were coming. Not only did he failed to prevent it. Buut Mr. Obama is directly responsible for the policies and decisions which allowed it to occur. That is something he indeed without questions owns.

Back to the issue: it is clear that they did not care whether Stevens was protected or not. Whether somebody sent him to his certain death (like King David did so he could hide his adultery) remains to be seen. Stevens was one of the rainbow boyz so it’s possible that jugears might have been worried about some personal skeletons being exposed.

One thing remains certain – the jugeared jackass sent a known homosexual to a place where homosexuals are hated and persecuted. You don’t have to be anything but a normal human being to find such an action to be appalling.

Simply losing the election and leaving office in January is not sufficient; there must be real, shameful, and everlasting consequences here.

At minimum, Clinton should be hounded to resign as close to immediately as possible – along with many others at State.

This should also extend to Obama, honestly. Being rid of him in another 3-ish months is not nearly soon enough.

besser tot als rot on October 10, 2012 at 10:29 AM

Both the Cairo and the Benghazi “events” had nothing to do with the infamous YouTube trailer.

Why would CNN [or CNNi] refuse to air the Nick Robertson report with Muhammed Al Zawahiri (brother of Ayman Al Zawahiri) that clearly shows the Egyptian uprising was 100% in response to his call for protests for release of the Blind sheik on 9-11.? Why would the “most trusted name in news“, hide the report showing the truth, and instead allow the false narrative to be sold, by them, to the American electorate?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M86ndC4V7EQ

CNN never aired the Nick Robertson report in Egypt because it completely contradicted President Obama and Hillary Clinton’s assertions. In short, the Robertson report, if aired, would have proved Obama and Clinton were lying.

The Nick Robertson CNN report was filmed on 9/9 and, by coincidence, it would have aired at the exact moment Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama began attributing the Egyptian embassy protest to a “U-Tube Video”.

Charlene Lamb, wanted to keep the number of U.S. security personnel in Benghazi “artificially low,” according to a memo summarizing his comments to a congressional committee that was obtained by Reuters.

Let’s set aside the ignored requests for a minute. Why exactly would State want to keep security personnel in Benghazi “artifically low?” It would seem to me that this could be the bigger indictment. Embassy stresses threat in a terrorist-rich environment and State decides to supress the number of security personnel for partisan political reasons (can’t create armed camps while the POTUS says there is no terrorist threat).

Happy Nomad on October 10, 2012 at 10:37 AM

I wonder how the MSM will (mis)treat this story. Maybe they’ll focus on a new poll showing Michelle Obama is more favored than Ann Romney.

This whole affair is simply repulsive, from State’s refusal to provide needed and requested security all way to the massive cover-up. I wouldn’t accept this kind of thing under any president, and I imagine an official or two under a Republican administration would have resigned by now.

I also tend to the view that, had Obama&Co. come clean from the get-go, there wouldn’t be a Congressional committee convened this close to the election.

There are two choices here. The State Department was incompetent or deliberately skewed security concerns to fit a partisan political agenda. We should hope for incompetence but I think it probably will turn out to be the latter. But neither choice is all that great.

In the meantime we need to get the principles (Rice/Clinton/etc.) under oath about what they knew and when they knew it. It is so transparent that this administration has engaged in cover-up for no reason other than to protect the re-election chances of a rat-eared coward.

Happy Nomad on October 10, 2012 at 10:41 AM

By all accounts, Ambassador Steven’s was the real deal, a real diplomat who loved his position and used it wisely. One of the few chosen because he was so adept, so respected, and so knowledgeable and his love of the people.

He knew the danger, but like a good soldier, he stood his ground and did his job…his job was to occupy the embassy and represent the U.S.

It wasn’t a matter of “good manners”, it’s protocol, just like the military, you go through the chain of command, and sometimes that breaks down and the “command” has to be held accountable.

Hillary/Rice/Obama (because Rice is a cabinet position) are held responsible…Steven’s was killed because these three were inept, and consumed with their own personal agenda. While Steven’s was consumed by his job and responsibilities.

He was an honored man, in that country, and should be in this country…instead he is a victim of poor leadership, and inept policies.

That being said, it probably would be more pro-forma than it will be because the administration cover-up. But let’s remember that these open hearings are unlikely to do anything but flesh out the administration’s lies. The details about what happened are apt to require classified testimony. We’ll hear Congressmen berate mid-level State Department officials when what is required is for the principles to be brought in and, under oath, explain why they lied.

But enough about this. The President is beyond Libya and now focusing like a laser on “saving Big Bird.”

Unconfirmed rumor has it that Ambassador Stevens was negotiating with the Muslim Brotherhood to provide Muslim Brotherhood members in Syria with weapons provided that the Muslim Brotherhood ensured that the Assad regime did not hand off any of it’s chemical weapons to Hezbollah. furthermore, that the deal collapsed when the Assad regime did facilitate a transfer of chemical weapons to Hezbollah (which Mossad destroyed last week in the Becka Valley) and the Obama administration reneged on their offer of weapons to the Muslim Brotherhood which prompted the assault on Benghazi.

She wasn’t even qualified to be the Junior Senator from New York.

Del Dolemonte on October 10, 2012 at 10:51 AM

The standards for qualification are not high. Whether she was capable of that job or her current one is an entirely different matter. One of my greatest criticisms of the rat-eared coward is who he appoints to run key positions in his administration.

Like him or hate him, GWB appointed credible professionals such as Rumsfeld and Gates to DoD and Rice to State. His one clearly political appointment Colin Powell to State was a complete failure.

Obama, on the other hand, has DoD and State being run by career politicians with no discernible expertise in the matters under their departments. Patraeus got CIA do divert any talk of him running for President this year. And let’s not forget the real power is held by a score of unelected/unconfirmed czars who work directly for the rat-eared coward.

Happy Nomad on October 10, 2012 at 10:58 AM

I just hope he and Michelle can keep their mouths shut until February, but I have my doubts…

Has anyone given over any thought to the aftermath of a Romney-Ryan landslide victory?

Barack Hussein Obama is an extraordinarily thin-skinned narcissist who harbors messianic delusions and a hubristic sense of self-worth. Now couple these attributes with a repressed rage born of deep childhood abandonment issues and a youthful indoctrination into Marxist anti-Americanism (bordering on brainwashing) and you have the formula for a post-election meltdown that will make Al Gore’s descent into madness in 2001 seem like a crying jag.

Think about this for a moment: Barack Obama knows all of the strategic secrets that directly impact our national security – and there are 10 weeks between his humiliating defeat on November 6 and Mitt Romney’s inauguration on January 20.

ManlyRash on October 10, 2012 at 11:03 AM

IMO, that won’t work. Not that I discount the wag the dog strategy. But to work it requires the public to have trust in their government and the public does not. The administration declared unemployment below 8% and nobody believes it. The administration has been caught in two weeks of lie after lie….

Somehow I don’t think the rat-eared coward can recover credibility by bombing the hell out of some target in Libya.

Happy Nomad on October 10, 2012 at 10:52 AM

It doesn’t matter what you think or I think or the public thinks, Nomad. What matters is what Obama thinks – and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he goes to war against Libya to “avenge” the attack on Benghazi in the delusional belief that the nation will forget all else and rally behind him.

ManlyRash on October 10, 2012 at 11:08 AM

The legacy media narrative is that this is being politicized by the dastardly Republicans. NBC started it last night with Brian Williams and Andrea Mitchell’s report.

Obama at the debate on foreign policy, “but, but, but they love me and my America. I gave them billions of taxpayer dollars, apologized and bowed before their leaders.”

jqc1970 on October 10, 2012 at 11:13 AM

As I said in an earlier post, typical liberal thinking.

They wanted the Libyian security forces to take up the slack. And since they wished really, really hard that it would happen, they assumed that indeed, the Libyian personel would do a bang-up job. With no pay.

They wish it to be so. And then they assume it will be so. Just like the stimulus. And the green energy programs. And Obamacare creating better care for less cost.

Magical Thinking.

As far as I can see. Rice had nothing to do with the runup to the Benghazi incident. Her only involvement seems to be as a “designated liar” to spread the regime’s story about the video. And, her’s is not a “cabinet position”. She is simply appointed by the potus to her office.

Something really really creepy here.

His constant talk of “saving Big Bird” does present a certain Nixonian paranoia combined with a Hitler-like bunker mentality. To the end, Hitler was marching imaginary armies across Germany. Barak Obama is focused on rescuing muppets.

Khun Joe on October 10, 2012 at 10:44 AM

The deaths from Fast&Furious were not caused by ‘incompetence’. They were, in fact, evidence that the obama/holder/jarret/clinton plan was working as designed and proceeding apace.

Manly Rash and Bitter Clinger: reasonable fears and here’s one more. Ostensibly, Bah-rack could run again or, equally as appalling, Michelle could. That’s why we cannot rest if Romney is elected. If we are blessed enough to have that occur despite the Democrats’ penchant for fraud and the media’s investment in Obama then we must insist with every fiber of our being that Romney and the Republicans turn the tide back towards liberty and away from the tyranny of bloated government. We must ensure that they clear the way for a robust free market economy and against the culture of dependence. And we must ensure the sanctity of all life. If we fail at any of these thngs, then we may not deserve the blessings God has bestowed upon us.

What if this was an intentional act to let our sensitive documents be taken by mudslum terrorists or Islamic terrorists? It sure is strange that we never let this happen with any other president! Our president is wearing a ring that is almost an act of treason in itself. He is out to destroy the USA and make it an Islamic country! I hope the women voting for odumba realize that they will become property of their husband instead of a wife if odumba has his way. There is nothing American in odumba and his minions! Our VERY FREEDOM rests on the outcome of this election. A vote for anybody or a non vote is a vote for odumba and the Islamic way. Does anybody want their children or grandchildren to become serfs and be told what, how and when to do anything by the government? If odumba stays in office the next war within our borders will begin soon in order to retain our Constitution and freedom. Which side do you want to be on?

rbj on October 10, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Succinctly stated. This is a petty, manipulative woman who unfortunately managed to get out of one jam after another. But her tenure at State has been a disaster. It has been an ineffectual charade, and the only thing she has accomplished is to learn how to absent herself when there is a crisis – and how to dance gaily. She is of a class with Madelaine Albright and Warren Christopher. And that’s not a good class to be in.

NeoKong on October 10, 2012 at 10:12 AM

IMHO CBS tolerates Logan since they would get 9 years of bad PR to get rid of her.Last thing they want is to unearth the regime, their bed buddies.
Lara Logan undoubtedly knows what Chris Stevens went through. She was saved in the nick of time. Stevens was not.
IMHO, Stevens was covertly assassinated by the regime.
He knew too much.Best way to get rid of him since he was in on giving the original terrorists arms who took out quadaffi and then probably tasked to get those same arms back with no security,he was simply targeted for assassination.
The regime never had to pull the trigger, simply don’t ok security and don’t even answer requests after a while, just let events unfold as they automatically would.
Take away security, load him up with locals who didn’t have a clue, somewhere obviously in cahoots with terror type or were terror types, then don’t pay them. And when the shit hits the fan he’s toast.
IT worked. Problem is they didn’t cover it up good enough.
Either that or the entire benghazi episode is just diversion for the regime getting in 181 million in foreign funds in Sept.Hard to tell with them they have so many ops going on.
