Obama rep: All of these Republicans politicizing the Benghazi attack are just so outrageous

posted at 2:01 pm on October 10, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Prior to today’s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the security failures in Benghazi, Obama campaign traveling press secretary Jen Psaki appeared on CNN to offer a little pre-fallout spin. I suppose that she’s right, really — if Republicans doing their job and refusing to ease up on getting to the bottom of the many disparate elements involved in the deadly disaster in Libya, just because it’s an election year, is political — then yeah, I’d say they’re getting pretty political.

Well, look, I think that’s quite a heady accusation from Congressman Chaffetz and I know Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have been out there making outrageous political accusations as well. The fact is, to the President and to the administration, this is not a political issue. No one wants to get to the bottom of this more than the President. …The administration is providing information they had access to at the time. And the intelligence community has come out and said that this was an organized act of terrorism. But for us, it’s not political. For the President, it’s not political. And it’s unfortunate it’s being brought to that.

Please spare us all the sanctimoniousness about getting “political,” because whether or not the president of the United States and his administration are equipped with the capabilities to deal with serious threats to our national security sure seems like kind of a big deal that voters deserve to know about.

And let’s not pretend nobody in the Obama administration got political with this by trying to portray a dishonest narrative downplaying the true motives behind the attack. Blaming the entire thing on some stupid video was an embarrassing ploy designed to depict to voters that Barack Obama’s policies in the Middle East have been more successful mitigating terrorist influences than they actually have, and the administration’s inability to keep its story even remotely straight suggests that there was perhaps a little more on their minds than only U.S. security interests. Sure, everybody wants to get to the bottom of this — but the Obama administration also has a very vested interest in misdirecting voters’ attention away from their foreign-policy failures, more so now than ever.

You’re too kind. At the least, timing enters into it. Let’s get to the bottom of it in, say, mid-2013 on a Friday afternoon.

By the way, have they taken down the yellow crime scene tape now that the FBI has arrived? How can they discuss it at a Congressional hearing without jeopardizing the rights of the “suspects?”

Drained Brain on October 10, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Obama rep: All of these Republicans politicizing the Benghazi attack are just so outrageous

No, trying to sweep the Benghazi attack under the “it’s not terorism” rug is what is outrageous.

But for us, it’s not political. For the President, it’s not political.

I’m still searching for a plausable explanation that is not politically motivated of why it would be blamed on non-existant “spontaneous demonstrations”.

UnderstandingisPower on October 10, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Here are some questions; what was the President doing at the time we lost contact with the ambassador?

Knowing the threat and situation, what measures were taken to ensure the lives of our ambassador and embassy staff were secure and not outnumbered?

This occurred on the anniversary of September 11th. It is one of the follow up attacks we have waited for years to come.

Yet the President failed to invoke sound policy and provide the necessary resources to ensure we were protected. He took a naive pre-September 11th mentality and our countrymen paid with their lives.

This is the result pf the President’s foolish and obviously dangerous foreign policy which has made us all less safe and allowed Al Qaeda to rearm and grow in strength.

It ties directly to his ability to govern our nation. If there is an issue more important than this in a presidential election, I am not sure what it would be.

An American citizen was accused by the President, Secretary of State, and Ambassador to the United Nations of causing the attack on the consulate at Benghazi. This citizen was trundled off in a perp walk in the middle of the night like some sort of Stasi raid.

At the same time, these same officials and their spokespeople have been caught in lie after lie. And it was only yesterday, knowing that people would be under oath today, that the State Department admitted that this was never anything but a terrorist attack.

I can’t imagine why the Congressional Oversight Committee would want to investigate all the lies and cover up. Let alone why voters might want to know about this when deciding who should be conducting foreign policy.

Soledad is always a fool.

The other woman is just a hack.

Questions to ask:

Why was Stevens in Benghazi when he’d just returned from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and on such days as 9/11, all ambassadors are supposed to be at the most secure spots in the embassies, not at outposts and consulates, not to speak of safe houses?

Why did NO one shoot back at the attackers? Because the guns were not loaded.

Why all the other items, lax security, cover up, video.

Hillary has not been seen but she looks like hell ever since the return of the casket, the announcement of the death, really. She knows what you don’t know, yet. txmomof6 on October 10, 2012 at 2:07 PM

We haven’t had a budget for four years thanks to Harry Reid and the Senate Democrats. Whatever request for funds would have been made in the President’s budget submission and never acted on by Congress. I saw in the bio on the woman who wanted artificially low security at Benghazi that she had control over $1.2B in security funds. Now I know that has to cover an awful lot all over the world but had State been serious about security, don’t you think they might have found a few dollars from relatively safe places to throw at a facility in a region teeming with Al Qaeda? Particularly after all the other foreign facilities were closed due to security concerns?
