Obama on his debate performance: I suppose “I was just too polite”

posted at 3:21 pm on October 10, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Ah, yet another line of reasoning for the President to explain away the lack of vigor during his dismal debate performance: It wasn’t disdain for Mitt Romney, nor a lack of adequate preparation, nor even altitude sickness; perhaps he was just feeling a tad too genteel that day to even bother trying to go after Romney. Click to hear the audio from RCP:

“Well, two things. I mean, you know, the debate, I think it’s fair to say I was just too polite, because it’s hard to sometimes just keep on saying and what you’re saying isn’t true. It gets repetitive. The good news is, is that’s just the first one. Governor Romney put forward a whole bunch of stuff that either involved him running away from positions that he had taken or doubling down on things like Medicare vouchers that are going to hurt him long term. And, you know, I think it’s fair to say that we will see a little more activity at the next one,” President Obama said on this morning’s broadcast of Tom Joyner Morning Show on the radio.

I would think that the “bunch of stuff” from which Obama says Romney either ran away or doubled down would presumably mean that the debate gave the Obama campaign ample material for easily trumpeting the superiority of their candidate. …But that doesn’t quite explain the oh-so-hard-hitting attack on Mitt Romney for wanting to — gaspfire Big Bird, now does it?

This is about the stupidest tack for Obama to take. By going around telling all his supporters he lost by being “too polite” to Romney, he raises their expectations for a hard-hitting take-down next time.

BUT the next debate is a townhall format. It’s hard to be too tough on the opponent when you are addressing voters’ direct questions. If he comes over too aggressive, he will appear desperate and risk losing the edge in “likability” he still enjoys.

Barky is in a no-win situation, and that’s fine with me.

He has painted himself into a corner and can’t figure out what to do next.

Romney did well. Absolutely. But given Obama’s utterly pathetic showing, Romney’s supporters are going overboard as if Romney’s domestic debate achieved the Second Coming live for the television viewing audience to get caught up in the “rapture”. Whatever suits your fancy. Between the two candidates, Romney uses his brain logically (though he has his preconceptions) whereas Obama fried his brain on drugs long ago and couldn’t find his way out of a paper bag with a flashlight. The joke in Austin TX KLBJ the next morning was that ‘EVEN PERRY’ would have beaten Obama in debate.

Romney deserves hands down credit for winning. I chuckled the next day when Romney’s absolutely well mannered delivery and gentlemanly etiquette were illustrated by the Taiwanese as boxing, Obama suffering repeated knock out blows. Then again, it isn’t as if Obama’s been kind to Taiwan, refusing to acknowledge their existence, in preference to Red China our “most favored nation” no thanks to Nixon/Kissinger so many administrations ago.

1. Audience stacked with hostile Republicans who sent bad vibes
2. The questions asked required answers longer than the time allotted
3. The A/C was set too low
4. The A/C was set too high
5. Smoke breaks weren’t allowed
6. The Nicorette gum ran out of nicotine early
7. Romney’s aftershave was overpowering
8. The lights were too bright
9. Obama’s new shoes weren’t broken in and hurt his feet

The possibilities are endless!

I guess he was “so nice” that he wouldn’t give his opponent the courtesy of looking at him, continually kept his head down, and smirked in reply?

Just how feeble-minded is this guy? Worse than I ever thought.

avagreen on October 10, 2012 at 5:14 PM

Another trap Barry just set for himself is that if/when he becomes aggressive during the town hall, all Mitt has to say is:

“I see now why you haven’t been able to produce bipartisan results for the American people the past four years. When I was governor of Mass working with an 87% Dem legislature, we found mutual respect was the basis of achieving bipartisan cooperation.”

Why doesn’t he just tell the truth. Blue pills are not what they used to be under Obamacare regulations.

meci on October 10, 2012 at 5:24 PM

President Obama and his minions can say whatever they want! The world “polite” is an unknown to Obama. He does not know what being polite is! I truly do not know what his campaign put him through for the first debate, but perhaps they thought that Romney truly was stupid so O could coast! If we say 1 they say no, it’s two!! No matter what we feel, think, know and understand, it is the opposite to them. Gibbs says they won’t give up Big Bird….so, they will, again, as usual break the law, lie, cheat, distort, attack, accuse, admonish, cast aspersions and, they truly are the biggest ignoramuses on the planet…they have to know that the majority of Americans know they are never honest or fair??? Ya think? I am beginning to doubt the sanity and mental stability of the extreme progressives…they are truly the most deaf, blind and dumb as posts because they are unable to understand their own words!!!!

Sounds as if the spin has come full circle with this one, but I’m glad they keep talking about the debate. Sorta like shooting yourself repeatedly in the foot.

Will the next debate take place with an empty chair pushing around a handkerchief?

Even George Orwell couldn’t have guessed how astonishingly surreal this world has become.

Don L on October 10, 2012 at 5:55 PM

progressives…they are truly the most deaf, blind and dumb as posts because they are unable to understand their own words!!!!

That’s because they use words, not as communication, but as manipulation. Their meanings are like the president–flexible.

Don L on October 10, 2012 at 5:58 PM

Next time Governor Romney will counter by being conspicuously polite thereby making little Bammie out to be the jackass that he is.

slickwillie2001 on October 10, 2012 at 5:59 PM

And the meltdown on DailyKos continues. Their entire front page is filled with nothing but debate debate debate and Romney lied etc etc etc.

I’ve never seen the liberals in such complete utter panic.

Amen brother.

And more …

We all called for Mitt to get tough and he didn’t let us down. obama thinks he lost becasue he was too polite? Let him think that and let Mitt get even tougher. I do not care if the atmosphere on the stage for the next debate has obama as nervous as the kid that gets his lunch money taken. He’s been the bully for nearly four years now with a loaded Senate and The House too until the mid-terms. His executive orders and his marching orders to get in our faces. Let him pee his pants on stage and Mitt laugh in his face. The next debate could put this guy away.

hawkdriver on October 10, 2012 at 7:16 PM

Good. We will get the “Angry Black Man” act the next time. That will win over middle America Cuz. LOL

Hummer53 on October 10, 2012 at 7:30 PM

it’s pretty hard with someone like obama to judge how self aware he is- he is a politician so half of their schtick is PR making even their biggest f ups seem brilliant, successful ( and in obama’s case near transcendent , understandable by no mere human). but there was a piece somewhere about how his handlers were stunned that barry thought he had won and done great.

still hard to judge the truth in what anyone close to obama says to the media and what they opt to spill… but if he really thought he won, he’s more detached and delusional then i imagined. exactly the personality the founders were trying to protect us from- a narcissistic boy king tyrant devoid a even a smidgeon of self awareness or respect for other humans and their rights.

barry- you’re an incompetent. that’s all. you did poorly because you have no feasible ideas beyond a bankrupt totalitarian ideology that always fails (with a huge toll in human lives and in misery) and your skin color. and the race thing ain’t working no more.

you weren’t polite- mittenz is always polite. you’re not qualified to be president. it’s clear you have achieved nothing in your life through the merit of your own abilities. you do not belong in a democracy. go do what you really want to do- be the president for life of some miserable third world country pretending to be a communist paradise. maybe raul castro needs your ‘wisdom’- but then again you’re not the right color to have a position of power in cuba.

…guess the next debate is even more important!

KOOLAID2 on October 10, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Obama thought he had won the debate just as he concluded al Qaeda is back on its heels or the Benghazi attack
was caused by a video.

Obama’s “narrative” is a fairytale story even more divorced from reality than that of Baghdad Bob’s:

What me worry about American tanks? I don’t see no stinkin’ tanks–just some big metal monsters pointing huge trunks at me is all!
