Video: The incredible shrinking President; Update: Sesame Workshop sends cease-and-desist request to Team Obama

posted at 8:41 am on October 9, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

More than a dozen American diplomatic missions have been put to the torch over the last month, one of which resulted in the first US Ambassador killed in the line of duty in 33 years.  The labor force is near its lowest level in more than 30 years. Gas prices have skyrocketed, and we’re at war in Afghanistan.  We are exactly four weeks from the national election.  Today, however, Barack Obama will release a new 30-second spot focusing on the true issue that faces our nation …. Big Bird?

Even Politico can see the contrasts between Obama and Mitt Romney, and which of the two is the presidential candidate.  Maggie Haberman provides some perspective, and demonstrates that Team Obama has lost theirs:

As Alex noted yesterday when the Pew poll numbers came out, we’ve long warned – and been warned – about big swings in surveys in what has been a fairly stable race. But the sampling of surveys out there do suggest a real Romney bounce.

And the president, as others have noted, and his team have been going fairly small at a moment when Romney is consistent in a message and pivoting toward going bigger (the foreign policy speech, more emotion on the trail, and so forth).

I get that Team Obama wants to salvage something from a terrible debate performance, but they’re making the situation even worse.  Obama didn’t engage Wednesday night on any meaningful topic.  Now he’s focusing all of his attention on Sesame Street and its potential loss of funding — when the show itself earns plenty of cash from its vast merchandising operations.  Here’s the Wikipedia description of that empire, which hardly makes Big Bird and the Cookie Monster look like paupers:

Current licensees include Procter & Gamble (Pampers diapers), Fisher-Price, Nakajima USA, Build-A-Bear Workshop (Build-An-Elmo, Build-A-Cookie Monster, And Build-A-Big Bird), GUNDHasbro (Sesame Street Monopoly), Wooly WillyBetty Crocker (Elmo Fruit Snacks), C&D Visionary (air freshners) and Children’s Apparel Network. Former licences include Applause, Child Dimension, Gibson Greetings, Gorham Fine China, Ideal ToysMilton Bradley CompanyNintendoPalisades Toys,QuestorRadio ShackTyco, and the Western Publishing CompanyCreative Wonders (a partnership between ABC and Electronic Arts) produced Sesame Street software for the Macintosh, since at least 1995 and on the PC since 1996; Atari produced Sesame Street games in 1983. Before going bankrupt, Palisades Toys was to release a line of deluxe series action figures, for adults, as part of Sesame Workshop’s push to expand into retro products for teens and adults. Only a Super Groverfigure was distributed to conventioneers.

The Sesame Beginnings line, launched in mid-2005, consists of apparel, health and body, home, and seasonal products.[9] The products in this line are designed to accentuate the natural interactivity between infants and their parents. Most of the line is exclusive to a family of Canadian retailers that includes LoblawsFortinos, and Zehrs.

As a non-profit organization, a percentage of the money from any Sesame Workshop product goes to help fund Sesame Street or its international co-productions.[10]

Barrio SésamoPlaza SésamoSesamstraßeSesame English and Sesamstraat have all had merchandise of their local characters. Shalom Sesame videos and books have also been released.

In 2004, Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) became Sesame Workshop’s licensing representative for The Benelux,[11] adding to their United Kingdom representation.[12]

Sesame Street hardly needs taxpayer subsidies, which was actually Romney’s point.  Team Obama’s desperate seizing of this issue rather than all of the other problems of the nation and the world makes Obama look small and out of touch, at the precise moment when his opponent is engaging on the larger topics that voters expect from presidential candidates.  It’s quite telling that, with just four weeks to go, all Team Obama can talk about is a children’s TV show.

Update: Sesame Workshop may be doing Obama a big favor here:

Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns. We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.

This is a perfect opportunity to push this one into the memory hole … but really, how sad is it that Team Obama thought this spoke to voter concerns?  And as long as we’re listing the Devils of Wall Street, it’s interesting to note who’s missing from that list.

And here’s one more thought from Jeff Emanuel:

Ouch.

Obama’s (and “Obama’s TEAM”‘s) fixation on Big Bird is the same as when Pelosi made her very, very public parade to Congress carrying that GIANT GAVEL prop!

Like THAT solved anything.

But then Pelosi went to bed that night content and pleased with her “performance in Congress”.

It all exemplifies and illustrates disconnect from reality by the Dems. Obama’s just taken it to a higher level of ‘nuts’.

“Mitt Romney: Taking on our enemies no matter where they nest.”

That actually has a decent ring to it.

Wasteful government spending, where ever it may be found, is a public enemy. Big Bird, having lived on a national subsidy all these years, will do just fine. He should have been weaned a long time ago.

As I keep hammering.

Just get this word out to people.

Seseame Workshop’s market value is over a billion.

Meaning, if WB, Disney, Fox – wanted to buy them, it would most likely cost around 1.5 Billion.

The public road for Sesame is about other aspect of their business. It gives them a flexibility Disney and Viacom do not have.

budfox on October 9, 2012 at 9:34 AM

Not sure where the lying state-run MSM gets the idea that Romney dissed Big Bird. It sounded to me like he said he liked the big fowl, yellow bird.

Personally, I’d like to see the morphodite chicken plucked, butchered and baked for an enormous free Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless in Philadelphia with the mayor as guest of honor.

The left keeps clamoring for more “specifics” from Romney while not demanding the same from Obama. It has to be in their daily talking points since I hear the same meme over and over. Well, Romney threw them a bone and gave a specific – Big Bird and PBS. What did the left do? They went apoplectic and specifically started picking Romney’s statement apart. That’s exactly what they want, specifics in order to get ammunition to attack Romney.

If nothing else, the Big Bird statement showed that the revenue that’s generated from Big Birds image and name alone is enough to fund a big portion of PBS. Why soak the taxpayers to fund their liberal propaganda?

iamsaved on October 9, 2012 at 9:36 AM

my dream of a new ad spot:

Big Bird: Wow Count, I just read that the national debt is 16 trillion dollars!

The Count: 16 trillion dollars??!!!

Big Bird: Yeah …

The Count: I love to count!!!
One dollar
Two dollars …
Three dollars …

(mailman arrives)

Mailman: Letter for Big Bird

Big Bird: Oh wow! It must be my federal subsidy!

The Count:
Twenty-three dollars …
Twenty-four dollars …
Twenty-five dollars …

Big Bird: Gee Count. Now the national debt is 16 trillion and 450 million dollars.

The Count: I start over.
One dollar …
Two dollars …
Three dollars …

Bert and Ernie watching from the side:

Ernie: You know Bert, at this rate I don’t think the Count is every going to finish.

Bert: I know Ernie. He’ll be so HAPPY.

(fade out)

The Federal Government should not be funding ‘Public’ TV…

Badger40 on October 9, 2012 at 9:06 AM

Agreed.

Romney said one test for funding a government program should be whether it is worth borrowing money from China.

Another test should be able to point unequivocally to the enumerated power that supports the federal government’s involvement in such a program.

And a broad interpretation such of “promoting the general welfare” isn’t going to cut it. Also, “necessary and proper” means both necessary and proper; not either-or.

Droopy on October 9, 2012 at 9:42 AM

That Obama ad proves how much Obama doesn’t care how he spends money that isn’t his. He is a parody of himself at this point. Might as well start using William Shatner and cartoon characters in future ads.

Spacey liberal SIL put a Facebook post up: “I’m on Team Big Bird!” she’s super nice, loves Downton Abbey and it simply never occurs to them that if they like their Big Bird, they can keep their Big Bird. They just have to put up with a few commercials.

But oh no. Then they wouldn’t get to preen (pun semi-intended) and posture on social media about how high minded and for the children they are while those philistine Republicans, who hate children and culture.

I want to say, I like children a lot more than you do. Because I’m not willing to take money out of their future paychecks to pay for my (theoretical) commercial free Downton Abbey today.

Latching onto the Big Bird meme doesn’t surprise me. It is the one thing from the debate that ALL of my lefty friends latched onto the day after the debate.

I knew their Big Bird goose was cooked when I saw all they had to hold onto was the Big Bird comment, when it wasn’t all that bad to begin with.

Even Democrats have to be cringing at that. It looks like something an OWS drum circle came up with. Childish.

Murf76 on October 9, 2012 at 9:48 AM

At first I was afraid this could well become Obama’s “Willie Horton” ad. But I’m glad to see this hasn’t affected the polling. PBS isn’t the only game in town anymore… it may have still been a significant player back in 1995 (the last time Sesame Street was a political pawn), but most anyone can get cable now, and there’s a lot more options where preschool/educational entertainment is concerned. Why, even PBS has spawned a cable channel in the form of Sprout. (Actually a joint venture between PBS, Sesame Workshop and NBC, but still…)

Mitt should treat this the same as the health care issue: It’s not in the Constitution, so let the states fund it.

TMOverbeck on October 9, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Oh no…the all important Big Bird endorsement?

I was afraid this was coming.

Say what you want about Axelrod, he’s not incompetent. I seriously wonder if Obama sees these dumb memes go by on his FB wall, remails them out to the campaign staff and says “This seems to be getting traction with people, let’s copy it.” I can’t wait for the campaign tell-all books next year.

Regarding the “Big Bird” issue: anything worthwhile on PBS or NPR will survive on cable or network TV. The CEO of Sesame Street productions makes approximately one million dollars annually. Talentless hacks (e.g. Nina Tottenberg) make several hundred thousand.

If limosuine liberals want commercial-free leftist TV and radio, let them either fund it through contributions of suffer through sommercials every three minutes like we endure on talk radio.

WOW… An incumbent at 46% of the vote… Your welfare queens agitator is going to lose the elections for the simple two reasons. First his base is much less energized in 2012 compared to 2008 so at least 3% of his total voters from 2008 are going to stay home in 2012. Second, at least 10% of the “White Voters” who voted for him in 2008 are switching to Romney in 2012… Both of these metrics indicate that Obama is going to lose the elections. The Math cannot be challenged here…

Instead of talking about Bain and the 47% , he ‘s now talking about big bird? You lost this debate, get him on the next one. You certainly don’t want to remind the voters of your staggering loss that you suffered at the debate by reminding voters of it. There are plenty of other things you can go after Romney for. There lies and damn lies, but at least it is putting up a good fight. I’m not even for Obama, but this level of incompetence is very annoying. I know Romney is going to win, but at least try and make it interesting.

New IBD/TIPP poll shows Obama leading Romney 46-44.

Their tracking poll in 08 was very good.

gumbyandpokey on October 9, 2012 at 10:24 AM

Tom and Linda Filigan’s polls, from Deepwater, Kansas, shows Obama leading Romney 47-43, so you are right on.

Their tracking poll in 08 was very good also…they polled their neighbors at an street October fest.

Still waiting from the Beregers, they haven’t made it back from their vacation in Cancun, but their poll was also very accurate in 2008 election…

Even if Romney wins, this country is in real trouble.

Public schools having degenerated from bad to worse, that’s the cause of so many floundering, foolish, gullible now-grown-to-voter age people responsible for the mess that we’ve seen that is Obama.

Lourdes on October 9, 2012 at 10:31 AM

I think a lot of this “Big Bird” nonsense has to do with nostalgia(well, except for the Obama administration, for which this has to do with getting re-elected). People remembering growing up with Sesame Street, and they feel bad about any part of it changing(of course they forget/don’t know that it has become more lefty as the years go on).
But for these people who maybe don’t like Obama but are “concerned” about Big Bird, just remind them of all the other programs they grew up with: The Flintstones; Scooby-Doo; Land Of The Lost; etc. And that none of those were subsidized by the taxpayers’ either. Maybe we just have to reassure them that Big Bird will be fine.

If that doesn’t work, remind them that Big Bird is one of the 1%. He is a millionaire, after all.

Sterling Holobyte on October 9, 2012 at 10:32 AM

How much revenue does Sesame Street bring in a year anyone know?

Conservative4ev on October 9, 2012 at 10:33 AM

Romney isn’t sentimental and metrosexually hysterical about Big Bird like Charles Blow and other butt hurt Libs. It was refreshing, seeing a candidate match his campaign rhetoric to his debate presentation when given an opportunity by PBS’s Lehrer.

Romney didn’t blink. That’s what they’re really getting their panties into a twist over. He and Lehrer were face to face in a boardroom and Romney was making the tough call.

If someone’s willing to tell you to your face what they’ve been saying about you (or your organization), with everybody watching, you know you’re dealing with a new kind of serious. Most people respect that. Including Lehrer.

RepubChica on October 9, 2012 at 10:34 AM

Romney should make an ad about how small Obama is in making Big Bird an issue in this important campaign just 4 weeks out from election day.

I don’t know if the Romney campaign intentionally put Big Bird in the debate in hopes that Obama would take the bait… but if they did… Bravo!

Pure genius. Time to capitalize on Obama’s tactical error here. This is a softball waiting to be hit out of the park, IMO.

bandutski on October 9, 2012 at 10:30 AM

This is how it works…they bring ups something like Bain, it’s a quick drive-by, and by the time Romney has their answer lined up…the dems move on to some other “major” point.

That is why it wasn’t brought up in the debate, they know that Romney had a quick and decisive come back on the 47% or Bain or whatever…they know it’s a trap.

And example…

Quayle:… I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency. I will be prepared to deal with the people in the Bush administration, if that unfortunate event would ever occur.

Bentsen: Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy. (Prolonged shouts and applause.) What has to be done in a situation like that is to call in the —

Quayle: That was really uncalled for, Senator.

Bentsen: You are the one that was making the comparison, Senator — and I’m one who knew him well. And frankly I think you are so far apart in the objectives you choose for your country that I did not think the comparison was well-taken.

That is why Obama stayed away from the 47% or the Bain…he knew that Romney had a stock answer that was going to destroy him.

The new meme for debates is not to take on a subject that is well known and expected, because the candidates have a stock answer.

One more example: Reagan at his best….

Big Bird is richer than Romney. Why is he collecting Welfare?

I remember talking to a friend who used to do A/V work at different TV stations in the area. He said most stations would keep their video tape decks, switches, and other control room equipment as long as they could to save money, doing their own maintenance on them to extend their life. But the PBS station always had the newest, fanciest gear housed in state-of-the-art control rooms. It was obvious they had more money than they needed.

Big Bird gets “pushed” to cable TV. I can hear it now. ‘ObamaPhones’ becomes ‘ObamaCable’.

And for those that want to revel in their polls, revel your way over to Rasmussen to see the latest Swing State polling. Romney +2.

The only poll that counts is the only one that I will be participating in ….. the one on November 6th.

Romney’s turn to make an ad on this :)…My feeling is though that he let the infantile obama campaign make fool of themselves with idiotic and puerile ads like the big bird ones, while he focuses on serious issues, and gives exceptional speeches on foreign policy. Take your pick :)…

Good post. That is what I pretty much figured as well. Even though, despite what the polls said, the Bain and 47% ads were doing little to nothing for his campaign, at least it was giving his base a boost. I don’t care about big bird, but if Romney goes after Spongebob, then I’ll be really upset.

Government budget: You have to spend the money in your budget each year or you don’t get it next year let alone the programmed increase.
