On eve of House hearings, State Department finally admits: No, there was never any protest outside the Benghazi consulate before the attack

posted at 8:41 pm on October 9, 2012 by Allahpundit

If you’ve been following the news about Benghazi, you’ll have two questions after watching this clip. One: Didn’t we already know this? Answer: Yes, “we” did, but not because our government was eager for us to find out. McClatchy published an interview with a Libyan guard wounded in the attack just two days after it happened in which he claimed that there was never any protest. Four days later, Fox News was hearing the same thing from an intelligence source on the ground. Four days after that, Eli Lake of Newsweek reported that there was intelligence early on that the attack was planned and that an Al Qaeda affiliate was involved. Right around the same time, Jay Carney started segueing from the White House’s initial ludicrous “spontaneous protest over the Mohammed movie” narrative to a “yes, of course this was a terrorist attack” admission. Not until tonight, though, I believe, did Chris Stevens’s superiors at State think to politely inform the public — not to mention Carney — that, oh right, there was never a protest. Let the fingerpointing begin:

The State Department said Tuesday it never concluded that the consulate attack in Libya stemmed from protests over an American-made video ridiculing Islam, raising further questions about why the Obama administration used that explanation for more than a week after assailants killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

The revelation came as new documents suggested internal disagreement over appropriate levels of security before the attack, which occurred on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the U.S…

But asked about the administration’s initial – and since retracted – explanation linking the violence to protests over an anti-Muslim video circulating on the Internet, one official said, “That was not our conclusion.” He called it a question for “others” to answer, without specifying.

Which brings us to the second question: Why did it take a month for them to mention this? I have no answer, except to wonder whether they’d have ever admitted it if Issa hadn’t called House hearings this week. Tonight’s news is simply State’s way of pushing some anticipated heat off of itself and onto the White House before tomorrow’s grilling begins. It’s a comfort to know that nothing short of public humiliation by the opposition party could get them to share info about a terror attack that ended with an American ambassador being murdered.

Two new questions for you, then, as the hearings get going. First, if State didn’t circulate the “spontaneous protest” nonsense within the administration, who did? Eli Lake traced it back to a set of CIA talking points distributed to Congress early on, but as far as I know, no one’s ever explained why the CIA was pushing that theory when there were at least a dozen intel reports within the first hours pointing to something more sinister and deliberate. And second, if State was innocent in pushing the “spontaneous protest” line, how is it that Susan Rice — a top State Department employee, don’tcha know — ended up being the administration’s chief mouthpiece for that talking point on the Sunday shows? Didn’t anyone from State think of mentioning to her beforehand, “Oh, by the way, we have zero evidence to support what you’re about to go on national TV and say”?

Look at it this way. Petraeus was appointed by Obama, likely at Jarretts & Axlerod’s urging in order to earn favor from middle of the roaders who looked at Petraeus as a war hero. This was for long term strategy for the upcoming election. Enter the “problem” of the attacks and murders of 9/11/12. Jarrett and Axlerod immediately saw the extreme damage this would cause their boy so concocted the convenient story of this little video trailer that was out and about. A phone call to CIA summons the Director to the White House and Petraeus is issued an ultimatum. Find some intelligence to support this and present it or…Petraeus can read between the lines. What they all didn’t figure was that too many people saw the truth and they couldn’t keep that genie in a bottle. Now they have poop still flying off the fan and someone just turned the fan on high. With the debate disaster to boot the wheels are coming off the wagons fast.

I pray that when Romney is President, he and the AG he appoints, goes after every one of these people.

If they don’t, eventually, when there is another Dem Pres, these people will be in leadership positions.

If they had made a big deal of how Hillary couldn’t remember anything aboout the Rose Law Firm or the travel office or the FBI reports, she would never have made it past the hearings.

Human sacrifice 21st Century American style.

It would seem the Aztec High Priests of the 15th century have been reincarnated and are now in full reign at the building some still call the Pentagon.

America’s Generals are now very much like the Aztec High Priests of many centuries ago. The main difference, and it’s a relatively small one, is that instead of continually sacrificing what they regarded as their excess and disposable human property to the Sun God to try to gain benevolence and avoid wrath, America’s Generals keep trying to sacrifice America’s Constitution, and do sacrifice more and more of the lives and limbs of America’s troops, whom they regard as their excess and disposable human property, as well as hundreds of billions of dollars of America’s rapidly shrinking treasure, which although itself is of much lesser importance is still no small matter, to the gods they reverently call “The Prophet Mohammad”, “The Holy Qur’an” and “The Noble People Of Afghanistan and their Noble Muslim Culture” to try to gain benevolence and avoid wrath, and maybe even get an extra star and another few assorted colorful baubles for which to adorn themselves.

Is our military fighting for anything most Americans would regard as at all decent in Afghanistan? Certainly not our Army, nor our Marines. America’s Generals have repeatedly ordered them to respect the gods they call “The Prophet Mohammad”, “The Holy Qur’an” and “The Noble People Of Afghanistan and their Noble Muslim Culture” and if American troops get shot to death by what their Generals call their Partners in Peace, then the Generals conclude that America’s derelict and sacrilegious troops must not have respected the gods they call “The Prophet Mohammad”, “The Holy Qur’an” and “The Noble People Of Afghanistan and their Noble Muslim Culture” nearly enough and order them to take still more religious and cultural “sensitivity” training so they can better respect the Noble Muslim Culture of the Noble People of Afghanistan, maybe even enough where they can start joining in the practicing of that Noble Muslim Culture themselves, which would no doubt delight the Generals to no end.

There of course is never any “sensitivity” training ever even recommended for what America’s Generals call “The Noble People Of Afghanistan” so they might better understand and appreciate Western and American culture. But then as America’s Generals clearly must regard the Noble Muslim Culture of the Noble People of Afghanistan as being far superior to Western and American culture, they would surely regard any such thing as, well, absolutely unthinkable, and blasphemous, and upon hearing any such suggestion would no doubt order even more “sensitivity” training.

* Mainstream Noble People of Afghanistan Muslim Culture includes child rape of both young girls and young boys, torturing dogs including puppies, total enslavement of women, stoning women to death for being raped, and death to apostates, which itself covers a whole lot, just to very briefly mention a few of the highlights.

It kinda seems like you’re the one hopelessly and ineptly trying to deflect blame from the Won who is supposed to have a sign on his desk which reads “The buck stops here”. Instead, sadly, this sign now reads “Who csn I blame?”. A sad statement that recaps a failed Predidency. An equally sad attempt to blame a General for the actions of the WH and State. Stock up for 11/7. You’ll need it.

The navy seal’s family apparently were (or still are, not sure) Romney’s neighbors in La Jolla, and he and Ann crashed their party by mistakea while back, thinking it was the neighborhood annual party or so stning. It wasn’t, it was just arivate family party butthey werekind and hospitable and invited the Romneys in and Mitt chatted for hours with their son, the navy seal. Recently he found out that the navy seal he chatted with back then was one of the guys killed in Benghazi.

Our concern as a people of a nation should be for the well-being of our War Fighters – FIRST! If Afghans, Iraqis, Iranians, Syrians, Libyans, Tunisians, Algerians, et al want to lessen their plight, they have the exact same opportunity as our Fore Fathers did; fight for it! We owe them nothing and certainly not our trust or the blood of our finest! The problem is, they don’t see their condition as a scourge or a plight; they see it as the spiritually enlightened condition of men who have given themselves to the doctrines of a man who claimed to have conversed with a ‘god’. Any man in this country who thinks we have anything to offer people who have given so much of themselves to so vile a religious construct as Islam is simply arrogant – and ignorant! Asking better men to sacrifice themselves for this arrogance is the height, width and depth of moral depravity! Demanding they continue in light of such absolute proof of the total and abysmal failure of such an arrogantly conceived battle plan, is simply criminal!

If this is going to change, men currently serving in the Halls of our great governmental institutions are going to have to enlist the help of men dedicated to this discussion who actually understand the topic. Our Representatives and Senators are going to have to decide to act in a way that may not be politically feasible and say things that may cost them an election. But one thing is certain, unless these men who claim to have a heart for the troops and say they understand that the current direction is wrong, act furiously to change it, our forces will continue to suffer the same life-altering injury and pay with their lives as have those before them. And the price they will pay, in the end, will be in vain because Afghans are not going to change what they fervently believe to be the state of being required by their ‘god’ and his spokesman.

Afghanistan is a cesspool of humanity; a mass grave for honorable men compelled to serve in her sewage by the arrogant, delusional and cowardly politicians of the day. Nothing good has come of our efforts; nothing good will come out of the next two years.

Our political establishment has lost its way or maybe the American population has lost its moral compass and have consciously chosen men of unscrupulous character and such a deplorable lack of courage to represent them. In either case the affect is the same.

Was the idea that the U.S. would (secretly) arm the rebels in Syria, so that Barry could claim again (as he did in assisting the Libyan rebels against Qaddafi) that he was on the side of the Muslim street (even if that street is controlled by the MB and AQ)? But why would AQ kill Stevens if he was doing their bidding? Did something go wrong?

Somehow a lot of people continue to not grasp what should by now be beyond obvious that there is nothing that promotes “Different Rules for Islam” more than our keeping troops in a Muslim country, such as Afcrapistan, where they are held hostage to Muslims if Americans back home exercise freedom of speech. Just listen to our generals repeatedly trying to intimidate Americans into giving up their freedom of speech even in America and bowing and scraping and apologizing to muslims when muslims find out they haven’t, yet anyway.

By staying in Afcrapistan for the last 10 years not only have we gained nothing for all the cost in lives and limbs and hundreds of billions of dollars, that we don’t have, but we are under much increased pressure to give up our constitutional right to free speech, our most important constitutional right, the Mother of all Rights if you will, because of it.

The last 10 years in Afcrapistan has been anti-American, not just not pro-American.

Senior State Department officials provided a detailed timeline of consulate attack in Libya that killed US Ambassador Chris Stevens – @AP

1 hour ago from hosted.ap.org by editor
===========================================

Oct 9, 9:09 PM EDT
New details of Sept. 11 consulate attack in Libya
*************************************************

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior State Department officials provided a more detailed picture Tuesday of the consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. A look at how they say the attack took place:

Sept. 10-11, 2012

Stevens arrives in Benghazi and holds meetings on and off the consulate grounds on Sept. 10. He spends the night, and for the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. holds meetings only inside the compound. It is an enclosed area about 300 yards long by 100 yards wide, with a 9-foot outer wall topped by barbed wire and augmented by barriers, steel drop bars and other security upgrades. There are four buildings in the compound. Five diplomatic security officers are present, along with four members of a local militia deployed by Libya’s government to provide added security.

Around 8:30 p.m.

Stevens finishes his final meeting of the day and escorts a Turkish diplomat outside the main entrance of the consulate. The situation is calm. There are no protests.

Around 9:40 p.m.

Agents hear loud noises, gunfire and explosions near the front gate. A barracks at the entrance housing the local militiamen is burnt down. Agents viewing cameras see large group of armed men flowing into the compound. Alarm is sounded. Telephone calls are made to the embassy in Tripoli, officials in Washington, the Libyan authorities and a U.S. quick reaction force located at a second compound a little over a mile away.

Grabbing weapons

One agent, armed with a sidearm and an M4 submachine gun, takes Stevens and computer specialist Sean Smith to a safe room inside one of the compound’s two main residences. It has a heavy metal grill and several locks, medical supplies and water, and windows that can be opened only from the inside. The other agents equip themselves with long guns, body armor, helmets and ammunition at other buildings. Two try to make it to the building with Stevens. They are met by armed men and are forced to retreat.

Attackers breach the compound

Attackers penetrate Stevens’ building and try to break the grill locks for the safe room, but cannot gain access. They dump jerry cans of diesel fuel in the building, light furniture on fire and set aflame part of the exterior of the building. Two of the remaining four agents are in the compound’s other residence. Attackers penetrate that building, but the agents barricade themselves in and the attackers can’t reach them. Attackers try to enter the tactical operations center, where the last two agents are located. They smash up the door but cannot enter the building.

Americans trapped

Meanwhile, Stevens’ building rapidly fills up with thick diesel smoke and burning fumes from the furniture. Inside, visibility is less than 3 feet. Unable to breathe, the Americans go to a bathroom and open a window, but still can’t get enough air. They decide to leave the building. The agent goes first, flopping out onto a patio enclosed by sandbags. He takes immediate fire, including probably rocket-propelled grenades. Stevens and Smith don’t come out of the building. The agent, suffering severely from smoke inhalation, goes in and out of the building several times to look for them. He then climbs a ladder to the roof of the building and collapses. He radios the other agents to alert them to the situation there.

The other four agents are able to reunite and take an armored vehicle to Stevens’ building. They reach the collapsed agent and try to set up a perimeter. They take turns going into the building, searching on hands and knees for the missing Americans. Smith is pulled out, dead. Stevens cannot be found.

Reinforcements

A six-person quick reaction security team arrives from their compound across town. About 60 Libyan militiamen accompany them. They attempt to secure a perimeter around Stevens’ building, and take turns going inside. Taking fire, Libyan forces determine they can’t hold the perimeter. A decision is made to evacuate the compound and return with everyone to the reaction force’s compound.

Evacuation

Agents pile into an armored vehicle, with Smith’s body, and leave through the main gate. They face immediate fire. Crowds and groups of men block two different routes to the security compound. Heavy traffic means they are traveling only about 15 mph, and trying not to attract attention. On a narrow street they reach a group of men who signal for them to enter a compound. They sense an attack and speed away, taking heavy fire from AK-47 machine guns at a distance of only 2 feet, and hand grenades thrown against and under the car. Two tires are blown out.

They speed past another crowd of men and onto a main street and across a grassy median into opposing traffic. The agents drive against traffic, eventually reaching their compound. Security gets into firing positions around the compound and on the roof. They take more gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades intermittently for several hours.

More reinforcements

In the night, a team of reinforcements from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli arrives on a chartered aircraft at the Benghazi airport and reaches the security compound.

Around 4 a.m.

The compound’s building is hit by mortar fire. The roof is hit and two security personnel are killed. One agent involved in the attack from the beginning is severely wounded. The men decide to evacuate the city entirely. They spend the next hours securing the annex and moving a large convoy of vehicles to the airport. They evacuate on two flights.

It might also give some pause to those in the United States so eager to arm Libya’s rebels.”

Let’s take it down a notch, shall we?

I am not trying to play 20 questions though I will be happy to address yours below.

All previous “bumps in the road” have been when the SCOAMF threw whoever he needed to under the bus to keep things far away from him.

Benghazi-gate is turning into the Baja 1000 and, so far, nobody has gone under the bus – which is unique. Shrillery can’t go under the bus because the Clintonistas can destroy the SCOAMF’s re-election chances.

Yes, the SCOAMF’s administration funneled weapons to the wrong people in Libya. This was one of the first things brought up regarding Doherty and why he was in Libya as a contractor.

1) What could possibly be happening in Syria that would make the idiots at Foggy Bottom think it was a good idea to arm the Muslim Brotherhood/Al Qaeda?

.
As a fellow I used to know observed, “Some folks can’t walk and breathe at the same time.” This perfectly describes the adherents of Smart Power (Obama & Clinton) who banked on Assad being a moderate and were undoubtedly “flexible” in their dealing with him. The only solution they can see to Assad is reaching an accomodation with the Muslim Brotherhood/Al Qaeda – the classic quid pro quo – we won’t help Assad, we will “help” you, you stay out of the way of the people we send into Syria to collect things we don’t want to see the light of day.

2) Why are the Muslim Brotherhood/Al Qaeda currently targeting and killing the top command personal of Hezbollah in Syria?

.
Easy, Hezbollah is an Iranian satellite. The Muslim Brotherhood/Al Qaeda alliance is not tied to a particular country. They both want to establish the prophesized Caliphate as a climax of having destroyed Israel. Decapitate Hezbollah’s Iranian backed leaders and the rank & file will follow or be “purged”. The Muslim Brotherhood/Al Qaeda and/or Iran may already have some of the Pakistani nukes. The easiest way to nuke Israel is via Hezbollah resources carrying it into Israel. Much simpler than bothering with a missile – it is a lot easier to hit what you are shooting at from 10 yards than it is from 100 yards.

3) What does this have to do with Syria’s rapidly vanishing stockpiles of Cyclosarin nerve gas? (reputed to have been manufactured in Iraq and transported to Syria by the Russians just before Operation Iraqi Freedom)

SWalker on October 9, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Some are being smuggled to Hezbollah. Some have been intercepted by American “resources”. Some are being handed over to Russian and Chinese officials to win their support and calm their fears of the nerve gas being used against their countries by Islamic militants.

Unless you are as old as I am, you haven’t had as long a period of time and background with sensitive information.

Bad things are happening now – but similar bad things have been happening for decades. The only way to survive knowing what most people never want to know is realize “some of the fit will inevitably hit the shan” and getting to wound up about it only makes everyone less effective in dealing with it.

Chill. I am not your enemy.

AZCoyote on October 9, 2012 at 10:28 PM

All indications are that yes, something went horribly wrong. Assad handing off several hundred, maybe even thousand gallons of Cyclosarin to Hezbollah terribly wrong.

For those unaware, Hezbollah is the Iranian version of Al Qaeda, Al Qaeda is the Muslim Brotherhoods plausible deniability militant arm. Which is exactly what Hezbollah is for Iran.

Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood are fighting over who will be the controlling power behind the new Islamic Caliphate. The New Islamic Caliphate is what the “Arab Spring” is all about.

Assad handing over his chemical weapons to Hezbollah seriously threatens the Muslim Brotherhoods plans for controlling this emerging new Caliphate.

My best guess as to what went wrong was that the deal the Obama administration had with the Muslim Brotherhood was contingent on the Muslim Brotherhood/Al Qaeda preventing Assad from making the transaction, the transaction was made, and the Obama Administration canceled it’s promised shipment.

There are also indications that Mossad may have neutralized Cyclosarin in question.

Maybe you missed this and btw Petraeus is not a conservative.

Yet a congressional source told Fox News that CIA Director David Petraeus, during a briefing with members of the House Intelligence Committee three days after the attack, also espoused the view that Benghazi was an out-of-control demonstration prompted by the YouTube video. According to the source, this was “shocking” to some members who were present and saw the same intelligence pointing toward a terrorist attack.

VorDaj on October 9, 2012 at 9:08 PM

I honestly don’t understand your point here. Are you trying to make this a referendum on petraeus instead of Obozo?!

Petraeus is only an issue if he was lying, if he was being fed lies by Obozo then he was working with the info he had been given. If he was lying to Obozo, then it not only shows that Obozo is incompetent, it also shows that he his own people don’t respect him. It also shows that the corruption permeates the entire administration.

And in EITHER case, conservatives are NOT going to jump up to protect ANY representatives lying to the American people.

You really need to wake up.

Actually, what struck me about that was that it seems we’ve been downplaying that kind of thing, if not outright and publicly saying that we’d *not* consider such a thing… until the last week or so.

My first thought upon seeing that story was that Obama’s folks are scrambling and looking for something to pull out of the hat to change the momentum of the race – would attacking Iran in the next few weeks be out of the question for these guys?

I wouldn’t put it past them, personally.

Imam Petraeus doesn’t much like Israel and blames them (see his 56 page staff report to Congress from a couple of years ago) for the “problems” in the Middle East and for endangering American troops.

Here’s a plan Gen. Petraeus should be able to get behind: A new battle strategy, maybe a Kilcullen special, for him to join forces with Iran to once and for all nuke Israel and its genocidal apartment houses out of existence. That, according to his own lights, is sure to keep American troops safe in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Heck, it would win the war — or at least the jihad.

I already said Petraeus get’s a pass here abouts no matter what and Obama, of course, doesn’t. If people here were going after Petraeus and giving Obama a pass, I would be going after Obama.

Petraeus is the head of the CIA so he should know more than any other individual what had happened. Lazy Obama wasn’t even going to his own intelligence briefings.

Again -

Yet a congressional source told Fox News that CIA Director David Petraeus, during a briefing with members of the House Intelligence Committee three days after the attack, also espoused the view that Benghazi was an out-of-control demonstration prompted by the YouTube video. Petraeus, and remember he is the head of the CIA, had to be willfully lying through his teeth. Obama, and remember he is the Child Emperor, probably just parroted what any adults in the room told him.

So obviously Hillary Clinton’s career in politics is finished.

mitchellvii on October 10, 2012 at 12:50 AM

This is getting messy! If Petraeus is lying it would have to be over something that involved a decision he made and that would mean the CIA is doing something that it should not have been doing. Of course he would only be carrying out orders from Obama. Hillary also stated several times that the whole incident was due to a demonstration that turned sour. That would mean that she too was lying and was trying to cover something up. The sad thing about all of this is the horrible misuse of our fighting forces and the INTEL people. I fought in Vietnam and have never felt so abused by anyone especially my government. If there is ONE f***ing person here that would sacrifice one of your children for ANYONE in the Middle East then you are one sick person. Should we help them? Sure but not with our blood or the lives of our fighting forces.

Cindy Munford on October 10, 2012 at 1:04 AM

So let me see if I got this correct:

-The administration was negligent in having adequate protection for an ambassador and his staff, with dire consequences.
-After the attack, they either intentionally or incompetently misinformed the American public.
-They made asses of themselves and the nation before the UN and entire world by blaming the whole episode on a crappy little YouTube short, thereby trivializing the whole episode and making it into some sort of pervese apologetic lesson in political correctness.

Incompetence and deception from Obama and company?
I’m shocked.
Is anyone else shocked?

justltl on October 10, 2012 at 1:08 AM

Now that the facts are out, maybe Obama should demonstrate our national resolve to our enemies and also demonstrate what a powerful and effective leader he is by reassuring them again that we will not tolerate the creation of insulting videos or farting in their general direction or anything.

justltl on October 10, 2012 at 1:25 AM

Obama needed Ambassador Stevens buried fast so that the stink of his pointless death would not stick to the Barack Administration …that brought it about by cutting security to the consulate.

And needed a patsy for the blame… which became the producer of the satirical anti-Mohammad trailer video on youtube.

Barry did a skillful job of misdirection and deflection of the culpability for this criminal negligence.

profitsbeard on October 10, 2012 at 2:10 AM

Ok, the way I am reading what is going on, storm clouds are gathering for Obama.

We now have he State Department and the intelligence community coming out saying they never said any YouTube video had anything to do with the Benghazi attack. State had been bombarded with cables for weeks begging for additional security and apprising Washington of the deterioration of the security situation.

I am guessing that to get DoD resources, State would have had to go through the White House for approval for Pannetta to allocate the resources. In any case, it looks like requests were turned down by Patrick Kennedy. Meanwhile an internal investigation at the State Department is convened … by Pat Kennedy:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/oct/9/state-department-creates-own-board-to-look-at-liby/

So we have State circling the wagons in CYA mode like Holder did at Justice.

Meanwhile, the press seems to be saying they aren’t going to cover Obama on this one with Lara Logan in her piece in the Chicago Sun-Times:

http://www.suntimes.com/news/washington/15581902-452/reporter-lara-logan-brings-ominous-news-from-middle-east.html

All the while, we have Susan Rice who does not fall under the State Dept. (UN Ambassador reports directly to the President and is a cabinet level position) is the “mouth” for all things Benghazi along with Jay Carney. So basically all of this YouTube crap has come from the White House.

Now look at the situation:

State and intelligence community distancing itself from the White House. Members of the press calling out the President on his lies regarding al Qaeda and Middle East terrorism in general. Four dead Americans who BEGGED for protection. At minimum this is either negligent homicide or manslaughter. Someone is going to have to take a serious fall. State doesn’t want to be it and the intel. community doesn’t either. That leaves only the White House left. Obama will try to put Rice on the sacrificial alter but that isn’t going to work because she wasn’t responsible. She had nothing to do with it.

Obama is going to try to stall until the election. It isn’t going to work because he isn’t going to have any press covering his rear end. Carney has already been 15 days without a press briefing. They are trying to keep the story from getting any oxygen. That tactic ends tomorrow. If there’s some serious truth telling in tomorrow’s hearings, the Obama administration is going to look like the wicked witch after she got hit with a bucket of water.

Think of the efficiency gained. Reducing the required use of the ‘shift’ key– billions of keystrokes saved daily — dozens of business dollars saved per man-day worked!!

Finally, the coined term for punctuation in this form would be “dropostrophe”.
