On eve of House hearings, State Department finally admits: No, there was never any protest outside the Benghazi consulate before the attack

posted at 8:41 pm on October 9, 2012 by Allahpundit

If you’ve been following the news about Benghazi, you’ll have two questions after watching this clip. One: Didn’t we already know this? Answer: Yes, “we” did, but not because our government was eager for us to find out. McClatchy published an interview with a Libyan guard wounded in the attack just two days after it happened in which he claimed that there was never any protest. Four days later, Fox News was hearing the same thing from an intelligence source on the ground. Four days after that, Eli Lake of Newsweek reported that there was intelligence early on that the attack was planned and that an Al Qaeda affiliate was involved. Right around the same time, Jay Carney started segueing from the White House’s initial ludicrous “spontaneous protest over the Mohammed movie” narrative to a “yes, of course this was a terrorist attack” admission. Not until tonight, though, I believe, did Chris Stevens’s superiors at State think to politely inform the public — not to mention Carney — that, oh right, there was never a protest. Let the fingerpointing begin:

The State Department said Tuesday it never concluded that the consulate attack in Libya stemmed from protests over an American-made video ridiculing Islam, raising further questions about why the Obama administration used that explanation for more than a week after assailants killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

The revelation came as new documents suggested internal disagreement over appropriate levels of security before the attack, which occurred on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the U.S…

But asked about the administration’s initial – and since retracted – explanation linking the violence to protests over an anti-Muslim video circulating on the Internet, one official said, “That was not our conclusion.” He called it a question for “others” to answer, without specifying.

Which brings us to the second question: Why did it take a month for them to mention this? I have no answer, except to wonder whether they’d have ever admitted it if Issa hadn’t called House hearings this week. Tonight’s news is simply State’s way of pushing some anticipated heat off of itself and onto the White House before tomorrow’s grilling begins. It’s a comfort to know that nothing short of public humiliation by the opposition party could get them to share info about a terror attack that ended with an American ambassador being murdered.

Two new questions for you, then, as the hearings get going. First, if State didn’t circulate the “spontaneous protest” nonsense within the administration, who did? Eli Lake traced it back to a set of CIA talking points distributed to Congress early on, but as far as I know, no one’s ever explained why the CIA was pushing that theory when there were at least a dozen intel reports within the first hours pointing to something more sinister and deliberate. And second, if State was innocent in pushing the “spontaneous protest” line, how is it that Susan Rice — a top State Department employee, don’tcha know — ended up being the administration’s chief mouthpiece for that talking point on the Sunday shows? Didn’t anyone from State think of mentioning to her beforehand, “Oh, by the way, we have zero evidence to support what you’re about to go on national TV and say”?

Yes.

As for your other questions, it’s similar to the game ‘Hot Potato’ that we used to play as kids in which you throw the ball around until the music stops. The one with the ‘Hot Potato’ is out.

The blame is being tossed around, and Obama is trying to guess whose the best person to get stuck with it before the music stops on November 6th.

Yet a congressional source told Fox News that CIA Director David Petraeus, during a briefing with members of the House Intelligence Committee three days after the attack, also espoused the view that Benghazi was an out-of-control demonstration prompted by the YouTube video. According to the source, this was “shocking” to some members who were present and saw the same intelligence pointing toward a terrorist attack.

It wasn’t/isn’t just Hussein Obama, Hillary Clinton, Susan Rice, and Baghdad Bob Jay Carney who perpetrated this Goebbels Level Big Lie. CIA head David Petraeus is also guilty as hell. In fact it was probably that b-astard’s idea.

When will Petraeus be called out here? On anything ever?

The State Department and the White House are both culpable. If for no other reason than States refused to provide adequate protection to our consulate and our embassies abroad, and Barack Obama appointed Hillary Rodham Clinton Secretary of State.

There is no ‘plausible deniability’ on this issue. We now know where the decisions originated and we know who is ultimately responsible for the actions of the State Department and this administration.

At the time, I thought she was an odd choice, too, but now it is clear that she was the person with the fewest…ambitions…going forward who could risk going out and lying in case the cover-up was discovered down the road — as it has been. And I disagree: she should ABSOLUTELY resign, and in a just world Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama would be right behind her. They crafted this cover-up before she ever hit the news shows, and she willingly went out there and lied.

This is HUGE. The media won’t cover it much, but Romney-Ryan are going to be all in on “reporting” this to the American people in the next debates. And then they will repeat Lara Logan’s (CBS News) report that al qaeda is “stronger than ever.” That the media is allowing this cover-up to unravel is stunning — this is a DISASTER for Zero and his campaign.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/10/08/top-clinton-aide-swiftly-briefed-capitol-hill-on-coordinated-attack/

Clinton aide described Libya strike as terror attack day later in Capitol Hill briefing

In a briefing to Capitol Hill staffers delivered the day after the deadly Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the killings appeared to be the result of a terrorist attack.

Under Secretary of State for Management Patrick F. Kennedy — who exercises responsibility for all department personnel, facilities, and operations, and who is one of the department’s most respected civil servants, having served in his position under both the George W. Bush and Obama administrations — delivered the assessment in an unclassified, half-hour conference call with staff aides to House and Senate lawmakers from relevant committees, and leadership offices, on the evening of Sept. 12. Capitol Hill sources described the call to Fox News.

That a State Department official of Kennedy’s rank — one with direct oversight of the installations and people targeted in Benghazi — reached such a conclusion so swiftly stands in stark contrast to the opposing narrative pressed at that time, and for several days afterward, by other top officials at State, the White House, and the intelligence agencies.

Four days after Kennedy’s conference call, for example, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice appeared on five Sunday morning talk shows to insist that the attacks were neither coordinated nor premeditated, but were rather the result of a spontaneous mob action, inspired by an anti-Muslim video on the Internet, that spun out of control.

Diplomad is a great site. He’s had some terrific posts on Libya and the State Department as well as F & F. He differentiates the Obama WH even from Clinton’s.

In this one on Libya, he links to a F & F post.

http://thediplomad.blogspot.com/2012/09/its-self-evident-americans-died-obama.html

What is “self evident” is that the people in charge of this government today do not hesitate to lie and then “pivot away” from that lie to a new one as needed. Cynics will claim that this is what our governments always do, and note, for example, Bill Clinton and his escapades. At least in my 34 years at State dealing with the press, the public, NGOs, the Congress, and other governments, not once was I instructed to lie–until, that is, the arrival of this misadministration when, for example, we were told to go forth and lie about U.S. guns to Mexico. Yes, we had tried to spin things to our advantage; there were things we hoped we would not be asked so we didn’t volunteer them; there were times when we were wrong; and there were things that were genuinely secret and we could not discuss. We, however, did not make things up; we did not lie. This President and his minions do not hesitate to lie. This is a very troubling development, and the press does not take them to task for it. If it were not for a handful of media outlets, talk radio, and the blogosphere, the Obama “folks” completely would get away with this “Chicago/Alinsky” way of politics.

What is “self evident” is that this misadministration will say and do anything to keep power.

What? Rice was chosen not because she drew the short straw, but specifically because of her official position and responsibilities. The attacking of an Embassy or Consulate and the intentional murder of an Ambassador on Embassy or Consulate grounds is generally considered to be an act of war.

The United Nations is where the aggrieved party present’s it’s case that said actions constitute an intentionally provocative action by the host nation and where ultimatums are issued as a consequence.

Having the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, come out and publicly proclaim the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi to be a spontaneous action taken by a mob was a carefully calculated move by the Obama Administration and the State Department to disavow the Libyan Government of any culpability or liability for the attack on the Consulate or the death of Ambassador Stevens and those with him.

I don’t disagree with you that that is their intent, but I’d read somewhere that protocol after Gaddafi was gone would have been to re-evaluate security, etc., for all State Dept locations and that the new protocol would have to be signed off by SecState Clinton and not an underling.

Do you know anything on this?

INC on October 9, 2012 at 9:18 PM

I don’t understand why people want Amb. Rice to resign, she didn’t come up with any of this garbage. As a matter of fact, I can’t figure out why our representative to the U.N. was the one who went on all the Sunday shows. I have to assume short straw.

Cindy Munford on October 9, 2012 at 8:54 PM

They were trying to save Hillary’s career, and possible her 2016 run. Probably Susan Rice doesn’t have such high ambitions. Besides she doesn’t have the same name recognition like Hillary, if she is appointed to another position of responsibility in the future, people won’t even remember that she’s the one who pushed the WH lies in the aftermath of Benghazi. They would have remembered if Hillary was the one though. Didn’t you notice how Hillary’s gone stealth since…she’s nowhere to be seen or heard…am curious if she’s going to actually testify in the coming hearings…

jimver on October 9, 2012 at 9:18 PM

I wonder if we’ll ever know the full truth on this.

Your desperation is palpable, tedious, and a wonderful thing.

Congrats on being another data point on Romney’s victory.

What did the POTUS know and when did he know it..? I mean after he returned from Vegas, Baby! Heh.

This thing has Valerie Jarrett all over it.

d1carter on October 9, 2012 at 9:21 PM

What in the world are these lying bums doing. Is there anybody in this government we can trust?

rplat on October 9, 2012 at 9:16 PM

Unfortunately Joe Biden is the closest one to being trustworthy.

Dear Lord.

Despite the LSM’s bias, tomorrow’s hearing on this is going to get widespread coverage. They already see that their boy toy is about to “take the pipe”, and this gives them a good reason and good timing to jump ship. They also know full well that they’re on life support as it is, as an industry, and can see that this storyand the coverup has legs. I can see them letting their boy toy twist in the wind over this one.

A very insightful and fact filled retort VorDaj. Now, about those debating skills….? LOL.

ManWithNoParty on October 9, 2012 at 9:24 PM

Do you think Obama intentionally did poorly during the debate to guarantee he’d lose rather than be re-elected but impeached because of this?

SWalker on October 9, 2012 at 9:18 PM

I guess that might make sense but she has had such a low profile during her tenure. She’s no John Bolton. I’d bet money that most couldn’t tell you who she is or who our ambassador to the U.N. is, let alone that it’s the same person.

Cindy Munford on October 9, 2012 at 9:25 PM

Darn.

Cindy Munford on October 9, 2012 at 9:15 PM

Darn?

Don’t we ALL want to have the wheels on the bus go bump-bump over Barky before the next debate on Foreign Policy?

What am I missing, Cindy?

No, she shouldn’t resign over this, perhaps, but she is a committed believer that Israel and the US have no business in the ME whatsoever, and she is an admitted anti-Semite and socialist. She should’ve never been named to this post in the first place, but she’s a Valerie Jarrett BFF.
