On eve of House hearings, State Department finally admits: No, there was never any protest outside the Benghazi consulate before the attack

posted at 8:41 pm on October 9, 2012 by Allahpundit

If you’ve been following the news about Benghazi, you’ll have two questions after watching this clip. One: Didn’t we already know this? Answer: Yes, “we” did, but not because our government was eager for us to find out. McClatchy published an interview with a Libyan guard wounded in the attack just two days after it happened in which he claimed that there was never any protest. Four days later, Fox News was hearing the same thing from an intelligence source on the ground. Four days after that, Eli Lake of Newsweek reported that there was intelligence early on that the attack was planned and that an Al Qaeda affiliate was involved. Right around the same time, Jay Carney started segueing from the White House’s initial ludicrous “spontaneous protest over the Mohammed movie” narrative to a “yes, of course this was a terrorist attack” admission. Not until tonight, though, I believe, did Chris Stevens’s superiors at State think to politely inform the public — not to mention Carney — that, oh right, there was never a protest. Let the fingerpointing begin:

The State Department said Tuesday it never concluded that the consulate attack in Libya stemmed from protests over an American-made video ridiculing Islam, raising further questions about why the Obama administration used that explanation for more than a week after assailants killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

The revelation came as new documents suggested internal disagreement over appropriate levels of security before the attack, which occurred on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the U.S…

But asked about the administration’s initial – and since retracted – explanation linking the violence to protests over an anti-Muslim video circulating on the Internet, one official said, “That was not our conclusion.” He called it a question for “others” to answer, without specifying.

Which brings us to the second question: Why did it take a month for them to mention this? I have no answer, except to wonder whether they’d have ever admitted it if Issa hadn’t called House hearings this week. Tonight’s news is simply State’s way of pushing some anticipated heat off of itself and onto the White House before tomorrow’s grilling begins. It’s a comfort to know that nothing short of public humiliation by the opposition party could get them to share info about a terror attack that ended with an American ambassador being murdered.

Two new questions for you, then, as the hearings get going. First, if State didn’t circulate the “spontaneous protest” nonsense within the administration, who did? Eli Lake traced it back to a set of CIA talking points distributed to Congress early on, but as far as I know, no one’s ever explained why the CIA was pushing that theory when there were at least a dozen intel reports within the first hours pointing to something more sinister and deliberate. And second, if State was innocent in pushing the “spontaneous protest” line, how is it that Susan Rice — a top State Department employee, don’tcha know — ended up being the administration’s chief mouthpiece for that talking point on the Sunday shows? Didn’t anyone from State think of mentioning to her beforehand, “Oh, by the way, we have zero evidence to support what you’re about to go on national TV and say”?

Hmmm..sounds like us (old soldiers) in 1970 and 71 at some airports here in the U.S. Many, including me, would run to the closest restroom and get out of uniform. Experienced this sporadically in the late 70′s (AF ROTC, lot of people on campus really didn’t dig the uniform) and 90′s (three block radius around the Naval base was off limits; you could go through but you couldn’t stop, and local commands told their people not to wear uniforms for regular transit).

Of course, during the early 70′s, bomb builders were going against military types, too. So who knows: maybe in a few years that knifer will get tenure somewhere…

I will add that in the British papers this morning, the police defended themselves by pointing out that unarmed police arrived in 4 minutes at which point they called for “firearmed” police (and apparently then just stood around waiting) who arrived 14 minutes after the first call. Not far off the witness’ saying as much as 20 minutes.

They were big power Fascists.

Aside from the recent resale of Eastern Europe, that would not work today. Remember the grand dreams of Saddam?

Heck, albeit we were nicer than the WWII generation with Iraq. We did spend a trillion dollars and thousands of lives in a country where they would have made a lovely parking lot but we went after him . Twice.

We used the flag football crew to track then elite troops get Osama.

The bad guys are getting inside with the help of the media/popculture/academics and then they go all kill crazed. The action is by then between Oprah and the truly nuts splinter of the Islamic crowd.

In geopolitical terms, a sideshow.

No big deal. If POTUS goes flat out Jay Bullworth someday, as he has been threatening, he will explain it all.

On the other hand, I think we need to get truly multicultural and send a few hundred million folks to paradise but what do I know. Read history. Empires work best when they are very martyr and saint creating.

Woolwich attack: soldiers take to Twitter to post pictures of themselves in uniform

Defiant soldiers and their families have taken to social media to post pictures of themselves in uniform following official guidance not to venture off-base in their fatigues in the wake of the Woolwich machete attack.

Both current and former servicemen and women, as well as their families, have changed their profile pictures on sites like Facebook and Twitter showing themselves in their full uniform, using the hashtag #WearWithPride, in protest at the advice….

Former soldier Glenn Rees, of Maesteg in Wales, was among those who posted a picture of himself, labelling the decision “ridiculous” and accusing the government of “backing down.”

Posting on Facebook, he said: “The Government’s decision to ban military personnel wearing uniform in public whilst investigations are being carried out is ridiculous! Backing down already! Been out of the Forces for 3 years to the day … Least I could do for this innocent soldier and his family. Brothers Unite!!”

Lisa Walker changed her profile picture to show her husband Anthony in fatigues, taken in 2006, posting: “I will keep this pic of my hubby in uniform up as a mark of respect to the young soldier lost his life yesterday n all of our hero’s [sic]”…

The “advice” has been rescinded.

I had about a 2 hour layover, so they took me to a nearby bar and bought all I could drink for 2 hours, brought me back to the terminal in time to catch my flight.

Hats off to the LAPD.

I was thinking about that earlier.

But then I went on to think that after WWI, the British government dumped most of their guns in the Channel and disarmed the population to a significant degree. So, about 20 years later, fearing a German invasion, they begged the US for arms. Millions of US citizens donated their personal long guns to the British civilian war effort. Those arms were thankfully not required, in great part due to American labor, sweat and blood. So, less than 10 years later the British government started dumping almost all of those guns into the Channel as well. Within 20 years they again became serious about seizing essentially all civilian weapons and in less than another 20 they did and destroyed their arms yet again.

England has thrice in less than a century disarmed its people with majority population support. The people are as foolish as the politicians. While attacks such as these infuriate and sadden me, my left-brain sees them as a naturally following consequence.

The Brits have been pretty spineless for a long time. When they were down in Basra, they had a “live and let live” policy – which Al Qaeda and the Iranians took advantage of by rolling vehicle borne IEDs into their slow moving, non shooting convoys (plenty of video of those attacks if one cares to look). When we (US troops) had to drive with them, they’d say things like “you guys can use your own ROE and engage how you like, we can’t shoot.”

What’s even more irksome than that was that the Brits were sitting on the primary route into Iraq (direct to Baghdad) – and never stopped a single thing from going through the border, north, into Baghdad and on to blow up or kill our troops. So a bunch of Brits standing around and watching a soldier get murdered isn’t much different in my mind than a bunch of Brits driving around in slow convoys, watching IEDs blow up their mates. I don’t know what special occaision Michael Yon managed to stumble into with his British embeds – where they actually did something – but I expect it was only for show, because they surely accomplished not a damn thing in Basra.

Hard to imagine a more demoralizing order for a soldier than to tell him to take off the uniform and hide

Allah…

it happened here..

In 1980, just after Desert One when I began my basic training at Lackland AFB.. The Carter Defense Sec. issued a policy statement to all the US military. We were “advised” to no longer fly home on leave, or to a duty station while in uniform… while not forbidden, they made it clear they considered it a provocation against the rabid anti-war protesters still populating US airports..

They were afraid we’re be making the college leftists, and newly pardoned Canadian deserters angry by wearing a uniform we sweated blood for to earn as volunteers in America’s all volunteer military. It was a major topic in the barracks.. and we learned how to hate Carter over it, as well as his other brain f*rts regarding us in the ranks.. we were the dregs according to the left, rednecks, burnouts, psychopaths..

at least in my unit, to a man, we refused to follow that advisory..

But it cut us to the bone..

Be ashamed was the message they sent to us.

To this day, I loathe Carter with every fiber of my being,.. and that’s why so many vets who served under Carter, then a real president, Ronald Reagan, have such a low opinion of Carter, and such a glowing one of Ron.. his first DOD advisory was to rescind the Carter one.

It did happen here, I’m just amazed Obama hasn’t pulled that one yet.

A lingering mystery: Why did none of the (apparently many) bystanders intervene yesterday to stop the jihadis in the act? By some accounts, it took 20 minutes for the cops to get there. The terrorists took time to chat with people nearby. Unless I missed something, no one laid a hand on them until they were eventually shot by police. Is that the Kitty Genovese syndrome at work or something worse?

There’s no mystery here – the populace is completely unarmed on orders of the government, while the Islamokazis not only were armed with knives but also all-too-willing to use them.

The real problem, to me, is if that’s all you do. They need to make it easier for soldiers to defend themselves if confronted by terrorists.

Arming them would be a good start. It would also have the fringe benefit of really annoying Piers Morgan.

There Goes the Neighborhood on May 23, 2013 at 4:28 PM

There’s information floating around today about one of the attackers, if you care. I don’t. The story’s familiar enough: He’s homegrown, had friends, became radicalized at some point, was acquainted with other cretinous radicals, and evidently turned up on some British intelligence list before slipping through the cracks.

Here let me translate:

(1) A man born in Britain who converted to Islam
(2) A man who converted to Islam who then practiced it in the traditional way and took the practice of Islam seriously.

It was not radical. I am tired of hearing that word. They were practicing Islam as it was practiced for over a thousand years when dealing with disputes between Muslims and Infidels. Of course not all people who proclaim themselves to be Muslim take Islam in a serious or a traditional way. In fact they might be a majority in Britain, but at least a large minority of Muslims in Britain do practice Islam in a traditional manner.

Just look at the polls:

NOP Research Poll: 78% of British Muslims support punishing the publishers of Muhammad cartoons

Policy Exchange: One third of British Muslims believe anyone who leaves Islam should be killed

CM Poll: 40% of British Muslims want Sharia in the UK

NOP Research: 68% of British Muslims support the arrest and prosecution of anyone who insults Islam

In other words, it is not a small minority. With differences in civilizations such as this it is only a matter of time violence will occur. It is not radical however if you look at the Islamic world in general.

Well, guess what — your citizens want an effective law enforcement system that knows how to stop today’s criminals in their tracks. My friends over there tell me that they are tired of the bad guys getting all the breaks, while citizens are penalized for defending their lives and property.

The days of bowler hats, Mary Poppins, and scones in the castle’s tea shop are quickly disappearing.

Peruse a copy of British Heritage magazine, and then go spend an evening near the city center of any British city, and you’ll see how great that change is.

And, yet here, in many places you are forcefully discouraged from applying your 2nd Amendment rights at times and we too are slipping into a barbarous state overall, as witnessed in several communities already.

Its all planned to go that way.

Brits ruled the world for over 150 years – 1760-1910 or thereabouts. They ruled b/c they had standards, their military was strong and they believed in the Rule of Law. Since they’ve been getting the 3rd world immigrants, they’ve begun to ignore the Rule of Law. Pitiful. It was 1066 when British citizens first pushed back against tyrannical rulers and passed their first law for “equality under the law” – that is kings and serfs would be handled the same in their courts.

Today – they split who has to oven _____ law – it’s killing them. Add to this the removal of private firearms from citizens, pathetic.

I don’t know how a nation reverts to self-reliance after becoming so passive. British spunk? British backbone – gone, gone, gone and the world is worse for it.

The same is happening in the western suburbs of Sydney. Soon a non muslim won’t be able to walk some streets.

Today Britain and Europe. Tomorrow the US and Australia?

If you want to know why we have the Second Amendment in the United States, now you know ONE of the reasons.

Never trust any government to provide for your welfare. The Framers understood this.

What have the Brits turned into — bystanders and p***ies. Just sickening.

That soldier deserved the protection of his fellow countrymen. They just looked on. Disgusting.

God bless the Second Amendment and the right of self-defense.

How about letting soldiers carry their weapons when they leave base since the streets have become a Islamic Jihadi war zone.

paulus1 on May 23, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Hell, I wish soldiers could carry their weapons in dangerous Democrat cities which are war zones between groups of worthless punks. It would both contribute to order as well as warn businesses and lawful citizens that this was not a place to be.

You would be surprised how many nations agree with you and envy us.

BTW, I did not mean to suggest killing hundreds of millions of Muslims earlier. With Israel as a guide, we are apparently in for a long bloodletting.

However, like the rest of you, I am brainwashed and very happy to leave countless millions of Americans in poverty while we spend treasure on DHS, TSA, million dollar drones and shutting down Boston to deal with crazed people.

Why should we ever pressure other Muslims or use other means to make them behave like civilized, sane people?
