MSNBC: Why can’t Team Obama stop talking about the debate?

posted at 1:21 pm on October 9, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Chuck Todd appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe earlier today to discuss Team Obama strategy — and perhaps staffing — in the wake of their debate debacle.  Six days later, not only is the Barack Obama campaign still talking about the debate, they’ve released an ad about perhaps the least important issue mentioned in it … Big Bird.  Instead of changing the subject, they’re continuing to extend the damage, and Mike Barnicle asked Todd about their strange obsession with the debate rather than finding anything else to discuss.  Todd agrees, and says that “Chicago” may be making some personnel changes in the final days of the campaign, according to his sources on Team Obama:

Yesterday, I wrote that the continuing focus on the debate by Team Obama was one reason that Romney’s bounce could turn into a surge.  Instead of putting the debate in the rear-view mirror by offering a substantive declaration of a second-term agenda — which is already several months late in coming — Obama and his campaign chose perhaps the least substantive moment from the debate to bring it all back up to voters.  This is a campaign that has entirely run out of gas, so much so that the only topic they can handle is Big Bird.  That doesn’t look presidential; it doesn’t look like anyone at Team Obama really cares about looking presidential and addressing the big issues any longer.  They’re defaulting on the big issues and second-term agenda to Romney.  If that continues, the polling shift will soon transform into a surge.

Update: The RNC has some fun with the Obama campaign’s self-immolation today with this graphic:

The real Obama showed up at the debate, in front of the entire world to see.

Now they are trying to fill the empty suit with anything.

It’s over.

After that keep a good eye/leash on Romney. He ain’t Nirvana either.

Obama always knew that the media love their creation/myth.

He forgets that they still love themselves more than him.

He embarrassed them and they will help to bring him down, to save the last smidgeon of credibility they have left.

It is incredibly schadenfreudig to watch.

I suspect this is the quiet before the storm. I’ve always expected Chicago to cut loose with the nastiest, foulest, lied-filled campaign in the history of electoral politics just a week or so before the actual election day, filling the airwaves and print media with its propaganda. Right now, Chicago is doubling down on their previous plans. I can guarantee we are not going to like Chicago’s final assault on Romney, Ryan and the Republican Party.

Instead of changing the subject, they’re continuing to extend the damage, and Mike Barnicle asked Todd about their strange obsession with the debate rather than finding anything else to discuss.

Good lord. Is there any question why they do this?

It makes them look bad, and until the polls show them that the excuse du jour is working they will not let it go.

They can’t stop freaking out because they may think Andrew Sullivan finally got something right:

Did Obama Just Throw The Entire Election Away?

While the arguments for BO wanting to remain in office and inflict more pain on the country in order to fulfill his perverse ideology are valid, I’ve always believed that he wanted to be a one term president.

There are many reasons I believe this to be true, however there are two that are the most relevant.

First of all, he can’t govern and has no wish to do so. He has demonstrated throughout his first term that he is disinterested – especially after the 2010 midterm elections. He cannot face criticism, and he cannot engage with adversaries.

Republicans will hold the House and stand to gain seats in the Senate this fall. What is BO to do for the next four years if he wins? Take the heat, whip out the veto pen and whine? He will be under more scrutiny than ever. He doesn’t like that.

Secondly, I think the reason he doesn’t want to continue is far more mundane. He can earn more money as an ex-president via speaking fees, consulting, etc. than he can as POTUS. That’s more his style…. endless, profitable speech-making. And his wife can earn money as well.

Both BO and MO have griped about being in office specifically citing the fact that Big MO isn’t paid for her ‘efforts’.

Being out of office solves that problem. They leave, move into a luxury estate in Hawaii (most likely) and earn far more money than the ~ $550,000 ($400K salary and $150K expenses) that BO currently earns.

It’s always been about money for these two. Until 2008 they did well without ever having to be accountable.

This presidential thing is hard, and it’s obvious BO doesn’t want it.

In one respect the debate was boring. There is always the post debate spin where each side has people saying that their guy won by super awesome brilliance. After last week’s debate, the Obama people pretty much said “we got nothin’.”

But mentally, I don’t think the left is dealing with this well. They were so sure that their guy was going to mop the floor with Mitt Romney that NOBODY expected that Obama would implode in such a spectacular way. And in front of millions of viewers. They simply can’t comprehend that their guy lost.

Oh no no no. Sesame Street is a $1.5-billion international corporation whose CEO pulls down a cool million dollars a year. It owns its own copyrights, and licenses them out–Amazon carries over 16,000 Sesame Street-branded products. The government just buys episodes from Sesame Street, it doesn’t buy the copyrights. That’s why this whole Big Bird thing is so egregiously dishonest.

when you can’t talk about the economy, foreign policy, or jobs, the only thing left is big bird. the Obama campaign has shriveled into debating about puppets, how appropriate

burserker on October 9, 2012 at 1:59 PM

I don’t see any October surprises except maybe strikes in Libya, Syria or Iran… Any of them won’t make a difference. Because the election is about a lot more than that…. The gang has been outed for what it is. Now Mitt needs to press his advantage.

and such action would confirm the Pres M.E. appeasement policies were a failure……

Not only it likely falls into fair use territory, Sesame Street is publicly financed, and therefore its copyright likely belongs to the public as a whole.

Fabozz on October 9, 2012 at 1:42 PM

Not only Sesame Street, but Bill Moyer, all of Ken Burns’ documentaries, and virtually everything PBS helps finance. They get 0% of the licensing fees, even from DVD sales of programs they subsidized and aired.

As a political parody, it does fall under fair use, though, so the GOP is in the clear.

Romney doing exactly what he should be doing… capitalizing on Obama’s tactical goof:

Good job Romney! Keep it up!!!

bobsacramento on October 9, 2012 at 2:02 PM

Are any of y’all having a particularly good day today, despite other things that may be happening?

Some folks are having a really bad day, and they threaten worse.

Some of us are prepared, and have been practicing.

cozmo on October 9, 2012 at 1:29 PM

The only thing that I am seriously afraid is that this would put the Dim voter fraud machine in overdrive…now that is something to take seriously, if it’s this close, it’s so easy to discard perfectly valid votes and ad votes by non-existent, dead, imaginary, cartoon, animal life, you name it, characters…plus those ubiquitous dims voting twice or three times…how long it takes to cross the border from here (Cali) to NV and Co, states that are actually in play? May the gas price in Cali raise to 6 USD on the election day..there, I said it!!

jimver on October 9, 2012 at 2:05 PM

I am beginning to believe that those in the MSM who have been carrying McMomJeansEyeCandy’s water for so long, are beginning to turn on him. They see the writing on the wall and it plainly reads that Romney wins in a landslide. This is huge. Keep watching the MSM hedge their bets. I am so ready for this four year nightmare to be over with.

^This. When press corp seats and access are suddenly up for grabs, you have to think long-term….and that means sucking it up when the tea leaves begin to say that Romney could leave you out in the cold, and could boot you out of your cozy first row seat in the WH briefing room.

Obama always knew that the media love their creation/myth.
He forgets that they still love themselves more than him.
Schadenfreude on October 9, 2012 at 1:26 PM

+1000!

Media to Obama, re last seat on last lifeboat leaving Titanic: “Don’t worry, you’ll get over it soon.”

Great to see Ryan play smashmouth football with that Camp ‘reporter’. THEY DON’T LIKE YOU, DON’T WASTE TIME TRYING TO MAKE THEM LIKE YOU. JUST SPEAK THE TRUTH.

Marcola on October 9, 2012 at 2:06 PM

It’s ammo.

They’re using it.

Man up.

That’s great! I know Palin would do this type of stuff on the campaign trail back in 2008 (I even saw her in person in Wilmington, OH), but it’s great that the actual candidate for President is doing and saying this.

MobileVideoEngineer on October 9, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Romney is going to win this election.

I don’t fear Obama or his people’s ‘retaliation’.

Why?

Obama has done the worst he could do to this nation. He has exhausted his wit and his stamina in the effort. He has nothing left, and the LEFT has realized that they would still like to have a career when he is gone. They are not going to sacrifice their own ambitions for him. Particularly in some mad scheme to retaliate for being defeated in the election.

It is beginning to dawn on the LEFT, those who are currently in office and those who pull their strings, that the mask they’ve worn for decades is well and truly off. We have seen them for who they really are and this revelation is because they gloried in doing what they wished, filled with hubris and rank arrogance and malice.

Now, they begin to scurry like roaches for the cover of darkness, wishing to, once again, fade into the woodwork.

Remember them. Remember who they are and what they’ve done and the character they’ve shown us.

thatsafactjack on October 9, 2012 at 2:07 PM

yes, they will blitzkriegh, but it won’t matter

the public viel has been lifted,
Romney’s real presence has shown them that they have been lied to all along by Obama’s false devilish characterization

their desperation will be shown for what it is.
Ruthless character asassination

game over

You have a lot more confidence in the American electorate than I do.

A must see, pass it along and make it go viral.

Obama Supporters: Vandals and Thieves

JPeterman on October 9, 2012 at 2:10 PM

Another reason Obo should let the debate go: That debate moved a lot of the fence sitting RW base. All the ABR’s from the R primaries(includes me) finally found a reason to like Romney + ending support for pbs is music to our ears. And, even though it’s chump change, it’s a brave move for a Republican. Now, hopefully, he actually does what he says.

Obama’s October Surprise?

they already gave one, the 47%, to cover up the Libya fiasco
