MSNBC: Why can’t Team Obama stop talking about the debate?

posted at 1:21 pm on October 9, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Chuck Todd appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe earlier today to discuss Team Obama strategy — and perhaps staffing — in the wake of their debate debacle.  Six days later, not only is the Barack Obama campaign still talking about the debate, they’ve released an ad about perhaps the least important issue mentioned in it … Big Bird.  Instead of changing the subject, they’re continuing to extend the damage, and Mike Barnicle asked Todd about their strange obsession with the debate rather than finding anything else to discuss.  Todd agrees, and says that “Chicago” may be making some personnel changes in the final days of the campaign, according to his sources on Team Obama:

Yesterday, I wrote that the continuing focus on the debate by Team Obama was one reason that Romney’s bounce could turn into a surge.  Instead of putting the debate in the rear-view mirror by offering a substantive declaration of a second-term agenda — which is already several months late in coming — Obama and his campaign chose perhaps the least substantive moment from the debate to bring it all back up to voters.  This is a campaign that has entirely run out of gas, so much so that the only topic they can handle is Big Bird.  That doesn’t look presidential; it doesn’t look like anyone at Team Obama really cares about looking presidential and addressing the big issues any longer.  They’re defaulting on the big issues and second-term agenda to Romney.  If that continues, the polling shift will soon transform into a surge.

Update: The RNC has some fun with the Obama campaign’s self-immolation today with this graphic:

^This. When press corp seats and access are suddenly up for grabs, you have to think long-term….and that means sucking it up when the tea leaves begin to say that Romney could leave you out in the cold, and could boot you out of your cozy first row seat in the WH briefing room.

newtopia on October 9, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Oh, do not worry about them, they will take the back rows and find a way to profit from presentiing themselves as victims and ‘martyrs’ on the altar of truth seeking or something :)…their newly found mission all of a sudden would be to ‘report’ and to paraphrase A. Cooper, to keep them honest or something :)…the press is a collective versed zoon politikon, they will ‘survive ‘this exile in Egypt’ but they will never give our side a break, or report unbiasedly, you know this…

jimver on October 9, 2012 at 2:14 PM

Obama always knew that the media love their creation/myth.

He forgets that they still love themselves more than him.

He embarrassed them and they will help to bring him down, to save the last smidgeon of credibility they have left.

It is incredibly schadenfreudig to watch.

Thinking of Tomasky, Sullivan, Elwanor Clift, Charles Blow and etc. is also Schadenfreude pure!!!

Yes, indeed. They will never give up their leftist ways, but there’s nothing uglier or more irrational than a pi$$ed off Leftie.

The second debate will be telling. If (when) BO loses it, they will turn on him like rabid dogs. Heck, they’re already half way there.

Rush just marvelled at this:

Obama ‘believed he had BEATEN Romney’ in Denver debate – after ignoring advice of top aides on preparation

Obama believes he’d got the better of Romney as he walked off stage to the dismay of his aides, according to a Democrat close to the campaign
The President failed to prepare properly, opting instead to visit the Hoover Dam the day before the showdown
Democrat claims he was so disdainful of Romney that he didn’t think he needed to even engage with him
Had one-liners on 47% prepared but chose not to use them

Proven narcissist.

They’d been overrun in the east, and in the west many of his generals were negotiating with the Allies to protect their troops.

But if that’s what you mean by “fighting effectively,” I agree. Just like Obooba is “campaigning effectively” now.

What worries me is that Valerie Jarrett and Axelrod, and their army of hairy muslim lefties, don’t want to give up. Where will their mansions be? Who will ever want to hear from them again?

They’ve been around for a long time, and they will be around after Nov. 6th.

The most important thing is to GOTV and win this election decisively. Like the 2010 midterm elections it will be a huge setback for them. We will be called racists, etc. But that’s fine.

We have our work cut out for us for many years to come. I don’t care whether these cretins move back to Chicago, Hawaii or any other place. We know who they are and who their cohorts are both in Congress and the bureaucracies. They need to be weeded out.

Instead of changing the subject, they’re continuing to extend the damage, and Mike Barnicle asked Todd about their strange obsession with the debate rather than finding anything else to discuss.

They’re in a state of sustained shock after losing their sympathetic, biased media in the wake of his terrible performance. And they lost them completely, though MSNBC wants back in like a codependent lover unable to fathom life alone in the big, mean world.

Team Obama can’t handle the media thinking and operating independently from their campaign spin. Functioning in an open war of ideas without the flak jacket that is their media is not in Axelrod’s job description. Media didn’t get authorization from him to play hard and truthful with Obama’s performance, and make him break into a sweat.

Curious how do you propose we do that. We can’t even get rid of Boehner and McConnell and GOP has done everything possible to get rid of Allen West via FL re-districting (and only out and out conservatives campaign for him). If we can’t clean up the GOP just the hell does one get rid of true cancer such as Pelosi and Reid?

We’re way more screwed than we want to admit.

hachiban on October 9, 2012 at 3:12 PM

It’s probably a typo. It’s very easy to transpose letters or numbers, especially in this case because the rhythm of v-i-e-l is easier and quicker:

v: left hand

i: right hand

e: left hand

l: right hand

in contrast with v-e-i-l:

v: left hand

e: left hand

i: right hand

l: right hand

I mention this because I think it’s wise to refrain from this kind of nitpicking unless you’re kidding someone. Misspellings and typos happen to everyone.

Among many other positions, I’ve been a legal secretary word processor and typesetter.

INC on October 9, 2012 at 3:25 PM

Todd agrees, and says that “Chicago” may be making some personnel changes in the final days of the campaign, according to his sources on Team Obama

About two months ago, I predicted this would happen. Will he take personal control of his campaign?

Obama believes he’d got the better of Romney as he walked off stage to the dismay of his aides, according to a Democrat close to the campaign

He will do the same again, because he’s not capable of the hard prep required, or able to problem solve in real time on his feet.

One has to be able to make an argument, not recite talking points. If he could think well on his feet he would not need a teleprompter in the first place. Heck if he just rehearsed his lines and remembered them he wouldn’t need a teleprompter.

I am not a terribly religious person, but Drudge has a link up saying that Romney MET the Navy Seal killed in the Libya attack? What?! Really?! So at the foreign policy debate he’s going to be able to pull out “I knew Glen Doherty” and pound Zero into the ground for getting this young man — and our ambassador — killed with his feckless lack of leadership?! Are you kidding Me?! It gives one pause, makes one wonder if this election is being steered by the Almighty after all.

What is even more pathetic is that Obysmal is not familiar enough with the policies and “achievements” (such as they really are, not as talking points with false statistics) of his own governance to be convincing in a debate. Those data should have been at his fingertips and not have to be memorized or coached.

The fact is that Obysmal has a failing report card. Every “achievement” that he would plan to crow about could be refuted with contrary facts and statistics.

Romney makes a major foreign policy speech laying out his strategy for America’s defense…

Barack Obama can’t stop obsessing over Sessame Street.

Maybe what Obama needs to do (given that he spent the whole last time on drugs) is to make like Adam Sandler and repeat K-12.

Maybe this time he actually graduate from K-12 on his own merits.

Varchild on October 9, 2012 at 5:10 PM

I keep hearing this BS about how Romney suddenly changed during the debate. NO HE DIDN’T. What changed was that this was the first time the scumstream media couldn’t distort the picture. They couldn’t cover up or deny that this is the Romney they’ve been seeing all along but chose to lie about him instead. The contrast of him up against Obamuh was seen by @70 millions Americans which made the truth indisputable and the slimestreamers can no longer rewrite the truth into the big fantasy they’ve been perpetuating. Mainstream America finally got to see how starkly naked the faux emperor is and finally got to see how engaged Mitt Romney is. He is appearing and behaving more and more presidential as this campaign progresses.
