CBS reporter blasts Obama claim that AQ “on its heels”

posted at 12:41 pm on October 9, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

As the RNC pointed out earlier today, we’ve had eight mentions of Big Bird and five of Elmo from Barack Obama and his team since the presidential debate last Wednesday, but we’ve heard nothing about Benghazi or Libya.  However, Obama did finally talk about terrorism last night at a fundraiser in San Francisco.  Included in his by-now familiar chest thumping over the mission that killed Osama bin Laden, the President made a curious claim about the status of al-Qaeda in light of the events last month:

“Now, four years ago, I made a few commitments to you. I told you I’d end the war in Iraq, and I did. I said I’d end the war in Afghanistan, and we are,” said Obama. “I said we’d refocus on the people who actually attacked us on 9/11 — and today, al Qaeda is on its heels and Osama bin Laden is no more.”

The extraordinary thing about Obama’s claim is that it was made less than a month after al Qaeda carried out a terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya that killed the American ambassador to that country, as well as three other Americans. That attack coincided with the same day–9/11–of al Qaeda’s most successful attack again America, which happened 11 years earlier in New York City.

More over, in the same month, al Qaeda carried out at least 3 other successful attacks against American embassies abroad.

“[T]he U.S. consulate in Libya was not the only diplomatic facility assaulted by al Qaeda-affiliated groups in September,” Thomas Joscelyn reported. “Terrorists with ties to al Qaeda’s senior leaders, including al Qaeda emir Ayman al Zawahiri, were involved in at least three other U.S. embassy sieges in Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia, and possibly elsewhere.”

Clearly, AQ isnot “on its heels,” as Obama claims.  In fact, AQ and other radical Islamist terror networks now have a lot more room to operate in eastern Libya, thanks to the NATO effort led by Obama to decapitate the Qaddafi regime without controlling events on the ground.  That led directly to the attacks on Western consulates in Benghazi over the last several months, culminating in AQ’s first successful mission against a US diplomatic mission in 14 years, as well as the three lesser-known involvement in embassy sieges noted by Joscelyn.

Nor is the Weekly Standard the only media outlet reporting on this.  CBS’ Lara Logan, a 60 Minutes correspondent who was sexually assaulted while reporting on the protests in Tahrir Square in February 2011, told a Chicago audience over the weekend that not only is AQ not “on its heels,” it’s making a comeback, along with the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan — and that those saying otherwise are propagating a “major lie” (via Katie Pavlich):

Eleven years later, “they” still hate us, now more than ever, Logan told the crowd. The Taliban and al-Qaida have not been vanquished, she added. They’re coming back.

“I chose this subject because, one, I can’t stand, that there is a major lie being propagated . . .” Logan declared in her native South African accent.

The lie is that America’s military might has tamed the Taliban. …

“There is this narrative coming out of Washington for the last two years,” Logan said. It is driven in part by “Taliban apologists,” who claim “they are just the poor moderate, gentler, kinder Taliban,” she added sarcastically. “It’s such nonsense!”

Logan stepped way out of the “objective,” journalistic role. The audience was riveted as she told of plowing through reams of documents, and interviewing John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan; Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and a Taliban commander trained by al-Qaida. The Taliban and al-Qaida are teaming up and recruiting new terrorists to do us deadly harm, she reports.

She made a passionate case that our government is downplaying the strength of our enemies in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as a rationale of getting us out of the longest war. We have been lulled into believing that the perils are in the past: “You’re not listening to what the people who are fighting you say about this fight. In your arrogance, you think you write the script.”

Logan has a prescription for that:

Logan even called for retribution for the recent terrorist killings of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and three other officials. The event is a harbinger of our vulnerability, she said. Logan hopes that America will “exact revenge and let the world know that the United States will not be attacked on its own soil. That its ambassadors will not be murdered, and that the United States will not stand by and do nothing about it.”

It’s been four weeks since that attack.  We’ve spent a grand total of twelve hours on the ground in Benghazi since in an attempt to track down the terrorists who conducted the attack.  So far, at least, it doesn’t appear that Logan’s advice carries the day at the Obama White House, where instead they spin fantasies of terrorist networks vanishing while the ruins of our Benghazi consulate still smolder.

One of the most persistent obstacles to coherent Middle East policy is the inability of policy makers to grasp the fundamental differences that exist between modern western culture and the barbaric Islamic tribal cultures of the Middle East.

These bloody thugs do not view restraint as wise moderation, but as a lack of will to fight. Restraint and pleas for “understanding” from those who don’t understand a G******** thing are seen for the ignorant weaknesses that they are.

What they do understand is revenge and overwhelming force. Massive retaliation will be understood and will discourage further acts of war and terror. In fact, brute force is the only thing that will work.

“Logan hopes that America will “exact revenge and let the world know that the United States will not be attacked on its own soil. That its ambassadors will not be murdered, and that the United States will not stand by and do nothing about it.”

Obama’s aides are working with laser-like focus to put out a strongly worded statement next week before the next presidential debate reminding America’s enemies that Obama’s Regime is as committed as any to protecting Americans. The delay is due to their inability to blame Bush, Romney, TEA party, or that darn obstructionist Congress for the events. But don’t worry, they’ll figure something out.

This is NOTHING NEW for Lara Logan and God Bless her for it.

As I said in my post this mornig, she shut down Katie Couris TWO YEARS AGO, when she tried to use errant US bombs in Afghanistan as anti-war talking points:

…CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric asked her about how the documents cite “the number of Afghan civilians who have been killed. How do you think this will damage the war effort?” Logan took the question in another direction:

Well, the issue of civilian casualties is a major one and the U.S. has taken a lot of criticism because of this. However, what’s interesting to note that is according to the documents, 195 Afghan civilians have been killed. But also according to the documents, two thousand Afghan civilians have been killed by the Taliban, which is more than ten times the number said to be killed by U.S. and NATO forces. And very little is being made of that. The coverage would indicate that it’s more of an issue for the U.S. to kill Afghan civilians than it is for the Taliban to do so.

It’s not necessary to infer the nightmare of her experience in Tehrir Square is responsible for her “awakening”. That’s horrific, untrue and absolutely WRONG.

She’s been speaking the TRUTH about what’s she’s uncovered for a long time.

I think this may be the most ignorant thing you have ever posted. And considering the mountains of ignorance you inhabit that is saying something.

While strictly speaking they are not sovereign territories of the visiting states they operate as such. An attack on an embassy is an attack on that nation occupying the embassy. Embassies and their personnel do not operate under local law, and host nations are barred from entering without permission. However, in your quest for ignorance you once again fail to see the forest for the trees.

But there is also a growing opinion from those who believe that the current path is taking us nowhere and that it would be more effective to bring the troops home, rest them, re- group, save the resources we are spending all over the world (human, financial, etc), but the moment that anyone dares touch a single hair from an American interest they will receive a visit from our brave men and women. What Would Teddy Roosevelt Have Done?

Logan knows the answer to this question. So do you.
spiritof61 on October 9, 2012 at 2:51 PM

He would have made it officially known that orders had been issued directing the US Marine embassy guards to be fully locked and loaded at all times while on duty with “shoot to kill” orders against any persons perceived to be entering the embassies with intent to do personal or material harm and that any such act by any foreign political entity would be considered an act of war.

Something Obama should have done IMMEDIATELY after our embassy was attacked but metrosexuals don’t understand such things.

Cleombrotus on October 9, 2012 at 3:06 PM

In other news unrelated to Dante’s opinions re: extraterritoriality and sovereign status of diplomatic missions, Al Qaeda is alive and well and eager to kill more Americans and Jews.

spiritof61 on October 9, 2012 at 3:03 PM

Don’t you mean Israelis? Regardless, that’s Israel’s problem.

Our government is more of a threat to our liberties than al qaeda ever will be or could ever hope to be.

Dante on October 9, 2012 at 3:07 PM

Bin Laden said that his perception of our weakness abroad led him to attack us at home. Anyone want to start a pool on when the next jihadi wannabe tries to bring this Benghazi chicken home to roost?

Please don’t mistake me. I’m not an isolationist. I’m more of the ‘Kill them all and let God decide’ school. It’s what they want anyway. Why don’t we give it to them?

AQ’s 1998 Declaration of War (“Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders”) is directed against Crusaders (that is, Americans) and Jews (that is, Jews). Sometimes it can get double value by killing American Jews.

Plenty of time for an October surprise, like sending Hillary in leading a US Calvary charge by invading through the “shores of Tripoli.” It makes perfect sense since she did want to be a marine as I recall, and she’s a battle-hardened warrior, having taken sniper fire for America when she went to Yugoslavia, and probably survived a few skirmishes with Bill at home.)

Let. It. Go. Even after it was pointed out to the dips**t that he government of Libya recognizes our diplomatic buildings as, for all intents and purposes, sovereign…all he kept saying for hours was “You said it was sovereign, and it isn’t. I’m right. You’re wrong. I don’t need to talk about anything else”.

He is nothing but a troll. If he was completely cornered, he would point out a spelling error to avoid conversations he cannot control.

0bama will announce the capture and/or killing of someone invovled in the Bengazhi attack shortly before the election. He’ll have someone iced, even on dubious evidence of their participation. That way he can claim Stevens’ death has been avenged.

“I Don’t Believe the Judge!”

You’re only partially correct. What happened here is a textbook case of violation of embassy extraterritoriality.

…diplomatic missions remain under the jurisdiction of the host state while being afforded special privileges (such as immunity from most local laws) by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

-snip-

The host country may not enter the premises of the mission without permission of the represented country.

-snip-

As the host country may not enter the representing country’s embassy without permission, embassies are sometimes used by refugees escaping from either the host country or a third country.

You’re using wikipedia as your source. Why did you leave off the first sentence of that section? The one immediately preceding your quote?

“Contrary to popular belief, diplomatic missions do not enjoy full extraterritorial status and are not sovereign territory of the represented state.”

Dante on October 9, 2012 at 3:44 PM

It’s been four weeks since that attack. We’ve spent a grand total of twelve hours on the ground in Benghazi since in an attempt to track down the terrorists who conducted the attack

We don’t need to know
Who attacked our embassy
To kill somebody.

We’ll just blow away
A few random foreigners,
And say “We got them”.

Nobody will ask
If they got the right people.
They just need a kill.

Yeah, Herr Doktor supporters swallow racism and anti-semitism whole, without asking. Actually, defending the idiocy… Which makes one as well. You know, same as there (supposedly) are “peaceful” muslims. Myth, same as your cult leader’s ideas.

Your idiot leader has already chimed in on the subject, and same as Hussein did, he stated he would not do much, either. Pay attention instead of blindly chiming in on the losing end of the argument.

Sounds great. Let’s let Americans attack the Iranian diplomatic mission and explain to them that this is not their sovereign territory so shut up.

itsspideyman on October 9, 2012 at 4:37 PM

Logan’s is a lonely voice because she is speaking the truth–a rare commodity in the newsrooms of the West. Al Qaeda isn’t beaten. On the contrary, they have had a surge of morale and recruiting is higher than ever (but don’t try to find reporting on that). They have successfully spit defiance in the face of Satan (i.e., us)and have forced us to watch the standard of the Caliphate fly over our embassies. They are winning. As for us, we cannot even distinguish friend from foe, so poor is our understanding of the situation. Our government is controlled by ignorant leftist politicians with no small degree of sympathy for an enemy who has nothing but contempt for them.

FYI, Hillary et al.: Our enemy is militant radical Islam. Jihad means war against us, the infidels. The war has barely started, but momentum has definitely passed to the Jihadists. Our enemy are confident of victory against us, despite our vastly superior firepower, because they see us as weak, contemptible products of a cesspool society based on lies, false belief, and unbelief. Given a half-dozen nuclear weapons, they are confident that they can subjugate us through terror, annihilate Israel, and initiate the permanent reign of Islam throughout the world.

Any questions?

Obama’s aides are working with laser-like focus to put out a strongly worded statement next week before the next presidential debate reminding America’s enemies that Obama’s Regime is as committed as any to protecting Americans. The delay is due to their inability to blame Bush, Romney, TEA party, or that darn obstructionist Congress for the events. But don’t worry, they’ll figure something out.
