Reince Priebus: Let’s face it, Joe Biden is a “gifted orator”

posted at 6:41 pm on October 8, 2012 by Allahpundit

High five to Reince for getting this out with a straight face. It’s one thing to ask him to perform basic talking-points puffery for the party by raising expectations for the Democrats at the debate, it’s another to ask him to articulate thoughts no human being has ever had. Not even Debbie Wasserman-Schultz could have made it through this line without a nervous giggle. Compare the first clip below, recorded yesterday, to the second, recorded just before the convention. A heroic effort at salesmanship by the chairman while the chips are down.

Actual headline from The Hill this weekend: “Dems hope Biden can blunt Romney momentum post-debate.” That’s what happens when your King decides it’s beneath him to have to debate the opposition:

The focus on Mr. Biden comes as the campaign tries to diagnose what went wrong in Denver and what to do about it. Advisers had seen two presidents during practice debates, one who had been listless and passive two nights before and another energetic and aggressive the next night. It turned out the former was the one who showed up in Denver…

Mr. Obama does not like debates to begin with, aides have long said, viewing them as media-driven gamesmanship. He did not do all that well in 2008 but benefited from Senator John McCain’s grumpy performances. Mr. Obama made clear to advisers that he was not happy about debating Mr. Romney, whom he views with disdain. It was something to endure, rather than an opportunity, aides said.

Here’s the thing about Reince’s spin for the ages, though: I am a little worried about Thursday’s debate. Not because Biden is a (heh) “gifted orator” or because I’m a dirty, dirty eeyore, but because expectations are so impossibly low that he’s guaranteed to overperform. What could “Joe Bidenopoulos” possibly say up there to make reporters come away thinking, “I thought he’d be sharper”? He’s not going to break out his action figures for playtime at the podium. He’s not that kind of doofus; he’s the kind of doofus who lobbies against the Bin Laden raid. After O’s meltdown in Denver, realistically all Biden has to do to succeed is pound the table and keep Ryan on the defensive with angry accusations about puttin’ the middle class back in chains, etc. The left will treat an angry performance as some sort of righteous catharsis after Obama’s passivity last week, and the media, which is so hungry for a Democratic “comeback” narrative that they’ve already started writing it, will happily declare Biden the winner for using “style” to trump Ryan’s substance or whatever. Remember, they love to punish candidates who underperform on retail politics. That’s the danger for Ryan on Thursday: No matter how sharp he is, the “comeback” bias plus Biden’s alleged ability to “connect” with the average joe will have the media deck stacked against him from the beginning.

Ryan is also the man that every Grandma wants to escort her to church on Sunday.

All he has to do is smile that smile and explain things in very simple terms and he’ll win.

gophergirl on October 8, 2012 at 7:27 PM

Yep. One thing the focus groups mentioned regarding the Romney/Obama debate was that Romney was clear, concise, and seemed to know what he was talking about. That’s Ryan in spades, and he does so in a nice, respectful way.

A “gift” is what comes in a babys diaper. Joe’s mouth “orates” or bring forths such gifts… :)

After finishing Biden in a few minutes, Ryan should abruptly announce he has a party to attend and then turn the lectern plus the balance of his time to Bobby Jindal.

Just watch that.

I think that the notion that Biden is just some foot-in-mouth gaffe-machine is too simple.

He is actually quite good in terms of rhetoric. His problem is that part of that comes from that fact that he doesn’t use euphemisms or tip-toe. Remember McCains “Straight Talk Express”? Well Biden is the real straight-talk express. Because of this, every few speeches, just as a statistical inevitability, he ends up saying something inappropriate.

Biden could very well match Ryan in a debate in terms of the energy.

The Ryan strategy would have to be lure Biden into being un-presidential. And the more agitated Biden is, the more freely he speaks, because Biden considers his straight-talkiness to be the root of his power.

Biden is the classic loose cannon. Ryan just has to loosen him up a bit more and he’ll go off.

Didn’t know you were of Czech heritage. I was married to a Czech once (born here, but second generation) and she and her sisters were and are still among the most beautiful women I’ve ever known. Problem with mine, she was interested more in my “check” backgound, so to speak, her sisters totally different. Right tree, wrong apple. ;-)

As Joe gets going he’ll get more arrogant, more overconfident, more condescending. He’ll look like a cocky know-it-all.
The spotlight is on him to save the campaign and he loves the drama of the spotlight.

Biden kept himself in check against Palin but I expect this time it will be one huge embarrassing spectacle.

Oh and that expression on Biden’s face—that’s a Barney Fife expression if I ever saw one.

Totally agree with AP on this one. This is what we call in hockey a “trap game.” It’s one you should win, but it’s against a team with lots to lose and incentive to give it 110%, so you can’t come out flat.

Ryan should bury this guy, but he’s got to have his head in the game.

As far as the debate goes I think Ryan is going to do well. I hope Biden does terrible and there is no way to spin it…kind of like what Obama did.

I think that it’s very simple: it’s not that Mitt Romney was born rich, gave it away, and got rich again that infuriates Barack Obama so.

It’s that Mitt Romney had a father who loved him.

I forgot about the trains. He took a train to work. Every election he’d talk about the train and the diner he ate at. That was it. That got him elected for decades. He’s a regular guy who’s been in politics since he was in his 20s. Democrat voters are dumb as hll. If I was cold calling with land in florida, I’d want a list of dem voters to call.

Biden and moderator will tag-team to turn this into a repeat of Bentsen-Quayle, so Ryan had best be ready.

Further, Ryan should not debate Biden, but rather go over the head of the moderator and talk directly to the American people.

Someone earlier asked why Obama has zero respect and plenty of hatred for Romney and had tremendous respect for McCain. The answer: Romney won’t roll over for Obama the way McCain did.

Good memories in this thread. That’s true to. He gave a shout out to a closed diner in the 2008 elections. And he gave the wrong address. He lied. No burgers fried. I will drink double if he mentions a diner or rider trains in the debate.

After Joe Bidementia goes all street fighter on Ryan Thursday, here is where Ryan should go, but can’t/won’t:

“Joe fancies himself a street-fighter and a tough-talking blue collar guy, and they say ‘politics ain’t bean bag’. OK, fine. Here’s the deal, ladies and gentlemen.

“The gay marriage of Biden and Obama is a marriage made in hell. Joe the pro-abortion Catholic Democrat talks tough about the Navy Seal operation to kill Bin Laden, except Biden repeatedly lobbied against it, by all accounts, and Obama whiffed twice when the Seals were in place, and had to be talked into approving the mission by his corrupt Chicago advisor Valerie Jarrett.

“While Biden described Obama as “the first sort of mainstream African American who’s articulate and bright and clean”, Obama ran for President in 2008 declaring that Bush was insane for going to war in Iraq, a mission that virtually every Democrat, including Mr. Biden, supported.

“It seems that there is little that they agree upon other than their great love of abortion.”

It ain’t bean bag, Greasy Joe.

This is the Biden move. He spends his time at Home Depot. I guess that means he spends a lot of time fixing up his house. Or maybe he’s ha a side business as a handy man.

What’s going to be the everyman story he uses in this next debate. BTW He’s been in politics longer then anyone.

BoxHead1 on October 8, 2012 at 8:34 PM

Biden appears to give a good stump speech, but they are built on enormous, gigantic, epic lies. Ryan will know the truth. Like Zero, there is just no way for Biden to prepare for that. He either stops lying, in which case there is no defense for four more years, or he continues to lie and the young whipper-snapper gently calls him out on it…with the truth.

As others have said, Ryan can’t afford any slip-ups. Ryan needs to treat Biden like he’s debating Lincoln – - and keep it up, even when Biden switches to Cliff Clavin mode.

Which is why I expect Axlerod to direct Biden to go full-out, full-time attack/accusation mode, to prevent any rational or honest discourse during the event.

And remember, the tepid Jim Lehrer is not moderating this one, so look for some help for Joe from Martha Raddatz. (I don’t know her degree of “in the tank”, but if they’re letting her do the debate, I guess we can assume she’s not a Romney/Ryan fan.)

Paul Ryan’s opening remarks should include the following line:

Danville [Kentucky] is America’s friendliest hometown.

Just think about this:

Joe Biden has been in poltics as long as Ryan has been alive. Ryan was born in 1970 I think.

This debate concerns me because Biden will flat out say whatever is cooking in his brain, most of it crazy. I don’t think Biden is as likable as he is like someone we all know in our life. Someone who is off the deep end, some relative or neighbor.Maybe Biden scares me because when I am old I can see myself being a fool like he is. I would rather be sick then be a crazy old coot.

Congressman Ryan and his staff have a simple tactic they need to use: tell it like it is and use the debate as an opportunity to tell the American voters that Greezy Joe Biden is probably the most stupid VP ever.

Just do a partial listing of his more spectacular gaffes and Ryan’s got the debate in the bag.

It’s about time someone called out that drunken buffoon Biden.

CatchAll on October 9, 2012 at 10:27 AM

It’s amazing how the media is turning tail and starting to report some news; that bite on the tail after the debate must have got their attention. The media blanket shrunk like wool in the dryer and they finally realized they better hook onto a winning candidate in order to stay alive.

mixplix on October 9, 2012 at 1:19 PM

Ryan should be wary of Biden. He may be a doofus, but all he has to say is, “It’s not about the numbers, Paul; it’s about the people!” and Obama recaptures the votes of Romney he lost in his debate. Ryan MUST have an effective counter to Biden’s emotional appeals.

Colony14 on October 9, 2012 at 2:38 PM

The average Joe Biden rides a train at $100.00 per ride, lives in a mansion and has worked for the government for 40 years, while donating a whopping $120.00 per year to charity.Sheriff Joe is a man of the people, the elitist snobs in the DC area.
