Quotes of the day

posted at 10:18 pm on October 8, 2012 by Allahpundit

Following the Democratic National Convention last month, the Obama campaign felt it was on a roll. So confident was the President that on the Saturday night after his Charlotte acceptance speech, he did something extremely rare: he talked to the thirty or so members of the traveling press that follow him everywhere. That evening in Florida, he made a surprise appearance at an off-the-record drinking session with media and campaign staff. The late night charm outreach at the Orlando hotel bar was a clearly tactical move to get the press on his side during the final stretch. But it was also an indication about just how confident Obama felt — and how confident his team was in him.

“They wouldn’t have brought him out unless he was feeling really good,” one journalist who attended the event would say later…

The day after the debate, according to multiple campaign sources, the campaign was “overtired” and “rattled.” It was clear to even the most hardened veterans that it was one of the worst moments for Team Obama, the first full blown crisis.

***

Seriously: has that kind of swing ever happened this late in a campaign? Has any candidate lost 18 points among women voters in one night ever? And we are told that when Obama left the stage that night, he was feeling good. That’s terrifying. On every single issue, Obama has instantly plummeted into near-oblivion…

Look: I’m trying to rally some morale, but I’ve never seen a candidate this late in the game, so far ahead, just throw in the towel in the way Obama did last week – throw away almost every single advantage he had with voters and manage to enable his opponent to seem as if he cares about the middle class as much as Obama does. How do you erase that imprinted first image from public consciousness: a president incapable of making a single argument or even a halfway decent closing statement?…

I’m trying to see a silver lining. But when a president self-immolates on live TV, and his opponent shines with lies and smiles, and a record number of people watch, it’s hard to see how a president and his party recover.

***

On the other hand, a continued series of events like last week’s debate really might change the narrative of the race. And here is the bad news for Democrats: Their best shot has already come and gone. The debates will anchor the campaign narrative from here on out, and the three debates that follow all offer less favorable terrain for them to press their case…

The next debate is a town-hall meeting. Obama’s campaign is talking up its plan to roll out a new, tougher Obama who will challenge Romney’s slick evasions. But a town-hall meeting is a whole different animal. In a one-on-one debate, you can fillet your opponent. A town-hall meeting consists of undecided voters pressing the candidates for answers. The focus of the event is on answering the questions of the voters. Using their questions to assail your opponent is bad form — indeed, the Regular Voters who ask the questions, and serve as proxies for the public, can be counted on to implore the candidates to stop attacking each other so much. Romney will use the town hall to proclaim his deep and abiding concern for all of America, and Obama will have little chance to disprove it.

***

And that really points to what must be the deepest reason for the Democrats’ strange response to the debate. The president can’t run on his record, and he isn’t proposing a second term agenda. All he has to run on is the caricature of Mitt Romney that his campaign, his surrogates, and liberal opinion makers in the press have been fashioning for a year. Their goal has been to prevent the election from becoming a referendum on the incumbent, which the Romney campaign had clearly hoped it could be, and to make it not even a choice election but a referendum on the challenger. Obama seemed to have a remarkable degree of success with this approach, but the debate represented Romney’s response: Rather than continue to insist that the election should simply be a referendum on Obama, Romney effectively presented a case for seeing it as a choice between two agendas, and presented his own proposals and vision in his own terms. The Obama campaign had been able to paint Romney in scary colors for months because Romney had declined to describe himself and his agenda much. Now that he’s finally running for president, the Democrats have a problem.

But if that’s their predicament, then surely their panicked response of the last few days is only making things worse. They can’t really expect people to treat them as a trusted source about Romney’s agenda and ignore Romney himself. But if they’ve lost control of the Romney story—even if they merely fight it to a draw—they don’t have much of a case to make for themselves. The public is unhappy with the economy and the direction of the country, and Obama is not proposing to do anything differently if he is given another four years.

So what do they do next? Continue to insist that Romney’s agenda is what they say it is and not what Romney himself is plainly promising voters? Try more aggressive personal attacks against Romney? Defend the Obama record? Not exactly a wealth of great options.

***

But perhaps it should be looked at in a different way: Obama did not lose so much as Romney won. A highly skilled, albeit vastly underrated, candidate showed what he was really made of on Thursday…

He won the GOP nomination relatively early (considering how frontloading the primaries was scaled back this cycle) and bloodlessly. Sure, it was messy at times, but he clearly has united the Republican party around him. Many of his once-staunchest opponents in the party – both high profile commentators and grassroots voters alike – are now counted among his strongest allies.

He did so without having to adopt political opinions that alienated him from the middle of the electorate, or his base. In fact, his voting coalition was the center of the GOP electorate – not too far to the left, nor too far to the right…

Put aside the [media's] notion that Romney is a hopelessly weak candidate and we can see that, in fact, he has a lot of strengths. I would argue that he is the most articulate and passionate Republican nominee since at least Ronald Reagan, and perhaps even more so than the Gipper.

***

Hannity noted that they’re “desperate” and panicked. Cadell agreed, pointing to poll numbers shifting in Romney’s favor. It’s the biggest debate victory since 1980, he said. And the Romney campaign should’ve used ads to tout that victory.

“The election is not over,” he said, noting that Obama has not yet been defeated. Coulter disagreed. Romney is going to win, she said, and partly because that was the most-watched debate since 1980, and “that was the first time in the last 100 years Republicans took out an incumbent.”

School Lets Dems Register Students to Vote, But Not GOP

Florida Republicans are outraged after a school district allowed a pro-Obama organization to conduct student voter registration drives and deliver speeches to classes – but denied the Romney campaign similar opportunities.

Pasco County Schools confirmed to Fox News that volunteers from Organizing For America were given access to as many as a half dozen high school and middle school campuses.

“They did register students to vote,” spokesman John Mann told Fox News. “We don’t know how many children were registered – (but) we have an ongoing investigation.”

According to email correspondence obtained by Fox News, volunteers tried to infiltrate at least three other school campuses – but on-campus officials rebuffed those efforts.

In addition to voter registration, a former teacher was allowed to deliver Obama speeches to a number of senior high school students.

“She got into six classrooms and gave pro-Obama speeches – like way off to the left,” said James Mathieu, general counsel for the Pasco County Republican Party. “That got out to parents and parents complained.”

Matthieu told Fox News he has filed a complained with the Florida Division of Elections and also contacted the Florida Attorney General’s office.

“We have a liberal culture in our school system and we know that,” he told Fox News. “The problem is someone has used false credentials, false pretenses and there is a security issue.”

Mathieu said that some of the Organizing for America volunteers identified themselves to school officials as being with the local elections office.

“These people have used false pretense to get into the high schools and all they’re giving us is whitewash and lip service,” he said.

But Mann told Fox News that to his knowledge none of the volunteers misrepresented themselves.

“They identified themselves as being with Organizing For America,” he said.

However, according to an email obtained by Fox News – school officials acknowledged there may have been some deceit.

“In at least one case, those individuals said they were from the Pasco Supervisor of Elections Office,” wrote staff member Paula Lesko. “Unfortunately the SOE said that is not the case.”

So why did school officials allow a partisan organization to mingle with students?

“That will come out in our final investigation,” Mann said.

Another significant issue was the former teacher’s pro-Obama address. Local Republicans asked for equal access. At first, school officials agreed – but later reversed their decision.

“There was definitely discussion of having a Republican come in for equal access,” Mann told Fox News. “We’re not going in that direction because that would indeed be an additional violation of board policy.

Organizing For America apologized to the school district, the Tampa Bay Times reported. And the volunteer who delivered the pro-Obama speeches has been dismissed.

A similar incident occurred in Pinellas County when a high school principal invited students to volunteer for the Obama campaign.

Reuben Hepburn, the principal at Dunedin High School, made an announcement over the public address system about volunteer opportunities with the Obama campaign and Organizing for America, The Tampa Bay Times reported.

A school spokesperson said the incident came to light after a parent complained.

“The mistake there was that (Hepburn) promoted one specific organization that supports one specific candidate,” spokesperson Melanie Marquez told the newspaper. “It’s okay to say, ‘Hey, you can volunteer for political campaigns.’ But it’s not a good idea to focus on one organization.” Source

volunteers from Organizing For America were given access to as many as a half dozen high school and middle school campuses.

How many friggin’ middle school students do ya’ll know who are old enough to vote?

And if they’re old enough to vote and still in middle school, well…

Hey we need an online pool or a drinking game set up for the town hall debate, where we can pick (or contribute) which questions will be asked by audience members the earliest, with extra credit for exact word matches. Something like, “Mr. President, what was it like for you- to kill Bin Laden?” I’d guess a question like that would be up by the second or third concerned but undecided citizen in the audience, if Gallup seeds their crowd properly and follows their scripts. There could be side betting pools, on such metrics as which ethnic group gets called upon first, second, etc and how many of each, genders, union memberships, OWSers and all the cool political identities. Maybe a special bonus bet on when the first openly identifying LGBT citizen is called upon. Aah the mind reels with possibilities. Whoever wins the various pools well… um Wins!

Any clever programers out there?

Remember how the liberals destroyed this young bride when her husband was killed in Texas. I believe Ann Curry had a hand in that character assignation. It spoke ill of the Obama Border. Otherwise known as The Killing Zone in border States.

A Colorado woman whose husband was killed while the two were using personal watercraft on Falcon Lake on the U.S.-Mexico border said that news Monday of the arrest of a potential suspect came as a surprise.

The Mexican navy said Monday it had nabbed suspected Zetas cartel leader Salvador Alfonso Martinez Escobedo, who is believed to have masterminded the massacre of 72 migrants in the northern state of Tamaulipas in 2010.

He also has been linked to the death of David Hartley, who grew up in Colorado but was shot in the head on Falcon Lake while he and his wife, Tiffany, were sightseeing on Sept. 30, 2010.

Dylan responded with a couple of his [in my never-too-humble-opinon] albums: Blood on the Tracks and Desire.

The politics of both of them stank (well, Baez’s anyway) but the sexual furor that they stirred up between themselves (like two weasels in heat) created some really, really listenable music.

Yes, I knew about the Baez tune, I can’t stand her voice…I know some people think she’s great…. although I do have a double album of her around here somewhere. Friends give me old vinyl because they know that I collect it, so some of my albums aren’t necessarily things I would have bought for myself. lol!

And “The Hurricane” is one of Dylan’s best. I have that album in the collection. I actually like several of Dylan’s albums…

I always say of these musicians… its not their ideology or personal life we like them for… they have one singular talent that attracts me to them… their music. So I overlook the rest. :)

Mitt Romney: “I will evaluate conditions on the ground and weigh the best advice of our military commanders”.

Well, our military commanders, the generals, are worse than incompetent, far worse. What else should they fairly be called after 11 years and all the wasted lives and limbs of American troops and all the wasted hundreds of billions, that we don’t have to spare, and all the bowing and scraping and apologizing to Muslim they have done, on the utter failure that is Afcrapistan?

I can tell you what our military commanders, the generals, will say. They will say what they have been saying for years now, that we need more troops in Afcrapistan and we need to stay long enough to “get the job done”. How many more American troops must lose life or limb for our generals hubris, career-uber-alles and willful blindness? there is nothing to “win” in Afcrapistan and past the few first weeks there never was.

Mitt, please apply the same thinking you used to make Bain so successful. If you had hired these idiot military commanders to run it for you, they would have run it into the ground as well as put you and your family in the poor house.

It seemed like he was here a lot… and then nothing.

Yes…it would be something, indeed, to find that Allah is a chick. You wouldn’t be the only one shocked by that little revelation!

I’ll tell you this, from my own experience as a writer. I’ve noticed, when I read Allah’s pieces, that there is a determined omission of certain pronouns. I developed the writing style myself because when I wrote professional pieces, revues, critics, etc. I didn’t want anyone to be able to tag it as either a man or a woman’s work. I wanted it to stand on its own merit.

I’ve noticed that same pattern in some of Allah’s work. It could just be coincidence, an idiosyncrasy in the writing style that Allah has developed over time. Allah has, on many occasions, said outright that he is a ‘beta male’. I’ve seen him deal with trolls as well, or in defending his work. He has a masculine personality in his defense and attack. I think he’s a man.

He may be a ‘metrosexual’ in the sense that he’s lived in NYC all of his adult life and has cultivated some of those attributes, but I feel that he’s male. That’s just my take. I could be completely wrong.

If I’m not mistaken, Michelle Malkin herself refers to allahpundit as “he” and has done so numerous times, including in a FNC appearance in the last year. I remember because she was asked whether AP would announce his identity at some point, and she said she didn’t know, that she hoped so, and said she thought highly of him.

By the way, his taste in movies screams male. I would guess late 30s or 40s based on some things he has said about pop culture.

I’m trying to see a silver lining. But when a president self-immolates on live TV, and his opponent shines with lies and smiles, and a record number of people watch, it’s hard to see how a president and his party recover.

Poor Andy…Poor baby. My heart is breaking for you. sniff.

It is funny how the polls are outliers only when they go to the right isn’t it? A D+13 sample with Obama 11 ahead? Well, that is just fine.
