Former U.S. security team leader in Libya: We told State we needed more security there, not less

posted at 8:42 pm on October 8, 2012 by Allahpundit

Ed flagged ABC’s story on this earlier today but I want you to watch the clip, as you’ll be seeing this guy again soon in front of Darrell Issa’s House Oversight Committee. Meet Lt. Col. Andy Wood, who until August was stationed in Tripoli as leader of a Special Forces “Site Security Team” at the embassy. Why didn’t he stick around until September at least, given that (a) the anniversary of 9/11 was impending and (b) according to basically everyone, Libya was becoming more dangerous? Don’t worry, State has an explanation:

One State Department source tells CBS News the security teams weren’t “pulled,” that their mission was simply over.

State Department officials have told CBS News that Wood was not part of the security assessment in Benghazi and that his assignment to Tripoli means he was unfamiliar with the local situation in the smaller port city in the country’s east.

Wood, however, says some of the members of his own team and additional personnel from the State Department’s elite security detail – the two teams which left Libya in August – would have traveled to Benghazi with Ambassador Stevens had they still been in the country. He did not say how many additional security agents might have been deployed for the Ambassador’s trip to the city, which is at least 400 miles east of Tripoli, but he tells Attkisson that he’s wondered if it might have made a difference on the night of the attack.

Remember, State also declined to intervene when local contractors tried to bring in a team of Americans to beef up security in Benghazi. For some strange reason, despite the obvious jihadist presence in eastern Libya and multiple warnings from different sources that they needed better protection, State seems to have resisted calls for a more robust security presence at every turn. That’s job one for Issa on Thursday. The “spontaneous protest” cover up is important too, but the CIA’s intelligence failure in detecting the attack and the White House’s security failure in not protecting Stevens are top priority.

And if there’s any time left over after those topics, maybe we can get an answer on the foot-dragging in investigating the scene of the attack:

The delay securing the site in Benghazi exposed more rifts within the administration. Senior U.S. officials said the State Department’s preference was to first try to reach a deal with the Libyans to provide the security. Talks with the Libyans dragged on, stoking frustration within the FBI and Justice Department. It wasn’t until late last week that the FBI and the State Department agreed to formally ask Pentagon officials to come up with a plan to secure the site.

White House National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and counterterrorism adviser John Brennan intervened on Sept. 28 to break the impasse between the agencies, according to a senior administration official.

A senior U.S. official critical of the White House’s handling of the matter said the White House exercised too little control as the efforts to get the FBI to Benghazi dragged on. “Where was the White House coordination?” another senior U.S. official critical of the response asked.

Before, during, and even after the attack, the White House blew every opportunity to act effectively. Obama has one chance left to get something right.

Had there been one we would have seen their bodies. The only tas a security detail has is the life of jits charge. if he is attacked and killed by armed attackers their bodies must surround his corpse. Had they been there, i am sure they would have carried out their duty, and we would have a live ambassador or a dead detail. They were never there.

Before, during, and even after the attack, the White House blew every opportunity to act effectively.

There are two camps fighting it out over Benghazi …

… the SCOAMF’s enablers put everything into the “spontaneous attack” lie.

The Clintonistas were telling Capitol Hill something resembling the truth within 24 hours:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/10/08/top-clinton-aide-swiftly-briefed-capitol-hill-on-coordinated-attack/

In a briefing to Capitol Hill staffers delivered the day after the deadly Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the killings appeared to be the result of a terrorist attack.

Under Secretary of State for Management Patrick F. Kennedy — who exercises responsibility for all department personnel, facilities, and operations, and who is one of the department’s most respected civil servants, having served in his position under both the George W. Bush and Obama administrations — delivered the assessment in an unclassified, half-hour conference call with staff aides to House and Senate lawmakers from relevant committees, and leadership offices, on the evening of Sept. 12. Capitol Hill sources described the call to Fox News.

That a State Department official of Kennedy’s rank — one with direct oversight of the installations and people targeted in Benghazi — reached so swiftly the conclusion that the attacks were premeditated and coordinated stands in stark contrast to the opposing narrative pressed at that time, and for several days afterward, by other top officials at State, the White House, and the intelligence agencies.

.
How strange – it’s almost like one group has learned the coverup is the bigger problem in the long run.

Shrillery’s testimony on Wednesday could be quite entertaining.

The lie is that America’s military might has tamed the Taliban.

“There is this narrative coming out of Washington for the last two years,” Logan said. It is driven in part by “Taliban apologists,” who claim “they are just the poor moderate, gentler, kinder Taliban,” she added sarcastically. “It’s such nonsense!”

As this rumor goes, Ambassador Stevens was the middleman involved in an Obama administration weapons (think Fast and furious here) transaction between the Obama administration and The Muslim Brotherhood/Al Qaeda.

Mark C. Toner
Deputy Spokesperson
Daily Press Briefing
Washington, DC
October 5, 2012

TRANSCRIPT:

1:03 p.m. EDT

MR. TONER: Good afternoon, everyone. Happy Friday.

QUESTION: Welcome back, Mark. Good to see you.

MR. TONER: Thank you.

QUESTION: So let’s start with Libya, and a couple of things on that. One is there’s this report about email exchange regarding an airplane that the post apparently wanted to keep, and they were denied. Is that – one, is that accurate? And second of all, they’re talking about the plane is a DC-3, and I mean – a DC-3? Really? The DC-3 was – they were made in the ’40s, and I’m just wondering if that’s the best available there is. And then secondly – or thirdly, rather, there was talk about there being a plane on standby in Tripoli that actually flew to Benghazi the night of the 11th, and I’m wondering – what kind of plane was that?

MR. TONER: Thanks for the questions, Matt. Look, I’m very hesitant to get drawn into this whole line of questions too deeply, because as the Secretary said, as Toria has said countless times over the last several days, we do have an ARB up and running now. They did meet again today. They are meeting regularly going forward. And it’s really their mission to get to the bottom of the events of 9/11 and to do a comprehensive report that answers a lot of these questions.

That said, in response to this particular story, my understanding is that – and I can’t speak to the make and model of the plane, I think it was a DC-3 – but this plane was in Iraq at the time and moved to support Libya early on, when there are no – when there was no commercial airline service into Libya. This is a very common practice in places where there’s no commercial airline service. When commercial service was subsequently established, we then moved that asset back to other State Department business, I believe back to Iraq in this case. But we essentially – we use our aircraft when there’s no commercial flights available.

In regard to your second question, again, I think some U.S. officials have alluded to the fact that there was a plane that was sent into Benghazi the night of 9/11. I don’t want to get into too many details; again, I don’t want to stray too far into what is the purview of the ARB.

QUESTION: Whose plane is this DC-3?

MR. TONER: I believe it’s a State Department asset.

QUESTION: Okay. And it was moved back to Iraq to –

MR. TONER: I think it was Iraq.

QUESTION: Because –

MR. TONER: “Reassigned to other State Department business” is what I have in front of me. It was taken from Iraq at the time.

QUESTION: Can you check that, where it went to?

MR. TONER: Sure, I can.

QUESTION: Because I believe that there is commercial airline service in Iraq.

MR. TONER: I’ll look into it.

QUESTION: So do you have any reason to believe that if this DC-3 had been kept in Libya, the situation would have been any different on the 11th than it was?

MR. TONER: Again, I don’t want to be put in a position here where I’m commenting on events leading up to 9/11 in what is rightly the purview of the ARB. All I can say is that –

QUESTION: What was it doing in Libya at the time?

MR. TONER: Well again, it was there simply to provide support in the absence of commercial –

QUESTION: Yeah. But was it ferrying – was it ferrying four flights a day –

MR. TONER: Precisely. It was bringing – no, I don’t know how many flights –

QUESTION: — to Benghazi security –

MR. TONER: I don’t know how many flights a day it took. I don’t have that kind of detail.

QUESTION: — weapons and ammunition to –

MR. TONER: I don’t have that kind of detail. But essentially – sure, go ahead.

QUESTION: – to the consulate in Benghazi? I mean, was that what it was doing?

MR. TONER: I don’t have that level of detail. It was meant to take personnel from – most likely from between Tripoli and Benghazi, but also elsewhere.

QUESTION: But – and also elsewhere in Libya?

MR. TONER: Yeah. I don’t have that level of detail, but it was there in the absence of a commercial airline service. So yes, it was there to take them from point A to B.

QUESTION: Well, was it taking things that would not be normally taken on a commercial aircraft?

MR. TONER: Again, I don’t have that detail.

QUESTION: Was it taking materiel in addition to people?

MR. TONER: I don’t have that detail.

QUESTION: And do you know when it was removed from Libya and reassigned to other business?

MR. TONER: I don’t have that date. I can look into that.

QUESTION: Welcome back, Mark.

MR. TONER: Thanks.

QUESTION: It’s good to see you behind the podium.

MR. TONER: Thanks. At least you in solidarity shaved your head; I appreciate that. (Laughter.)

QUESTION: I wanted to – exactly. We should have our picture taken together.

MR. TONER: That’s right.

Six more security agents wouldn’t have made a difference. IEDs, RPGs and mortars are a serious threat to a military combat outpost nevermind a consulate building that didn’t have adequate security infrastructure like reinforced walls and bullet-proof glass.

The proper course of action is what the Brits did which is close the consulate after the attacks started. We should have been right behind them.

Let the expose of Barry/Hillary’s incompetence and malfeasance continue, and clear-eyed Americans will know what yo do.

I don’t know but somehow the idea of him and his grifter wife living large on the taxpayers’ dime for the rest of their lives after the treasonous efforts they put in to fundamentally change the country doesn’t sit well with me.

Exactly. There has to be some consequence for some of this stuff. Mr. Stevens and countless other causalities deserve no less.

State Department officials have told CBS News that Wood was not part of the security assessment in Benghazi and that his assignment to Tripoli means he was unfamiliar with the local situation in the smaller port city in the country’s east.

That sounds like more hogwash. Lt. Colonel Wood met with Amb. Stevens everyday about security and he himself attempted to get security increased through the DoD.

State seems to have resisted calls for a more robust security presence at every turn.

Not only that, but again according to the Lt. Col., the State Dept. even told those on the ground in Benghazi….to stop asking for more assistance with security.

There’s a longer version of the interview with Lt. Col. Wood here.

Can I just say that Sharyl Atkisson is a helluva reporter? She just does a solid job.

Associated Press

The commander of the security team, Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, told ABC News that slain U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens had wanted the team to stay even longer – past the end of its extended deployment in August.

A senior State Department official confirmed to The Associated Press that the initial extension request was granted, but said that despite Wood’s comments, a request for an extension past August was never made.

So is this more BS from State?

The vice is getting tighter on Obama/Clinton regarding this mess with not a lot of time remaining.
Ryan and Romney both need to bring this Administration to task during the remaining debates.

Soul not be surprised if Obama / Clinton do not try to throw each other under the bus.

SmallGovtGuy on October 8, 2012 at 11:17 PM

Was Stevens thrown under the bus because it wouldn’t poll well for a gay ambassador in Libya to be killed and tortured after they removed his security.? Or worse yet did the regime let terror types kill Stevens so they had a diversion for the 181 million that came in during Sept. as campaign contributions but was really terrorist/mid-East money in disguise just like 08?

The media blanket can do just so much. When things are this bad it’s almost impossible to protect the leaning left from the truths from so many that are not connected to the White House. Hillary should be in chains but she too is connected to the White House and under the media blanket. Too many coincidental deaths connected to the Clintons while they were there; there is no honor or anything sacred.

You know, I’m not a conspiracy kind of guy, but a small part of me keeps wondering if this was a “wag the dog” that went south. Especially with a Clinton involved.

I am so ashamed these men died because we wouldn’t protect them properly. Many of us signed to put our life on the line for our country but, in my case anyway, felt we were given all that could be expected to get the job done. These guys were just sent out empty handed with no one to help. Change this in November.
