Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on October 7, 2012 by Allahpundit

How slim are the pickings this week? So slim that this guy, who hasn’t mattered politically in at least five years, is the highest-profile guest across the four major shows today. If you want to watch him sell his book and run through the familiar two-step with David Gregory about how the GOP is too radical, then “Meet the Press” is your choice.

If not, no worries. Ninety percent of the chatter on every show this morning will focus on Romney’s humiliation of Obama on Wednesday night, which means we’re in for one of the most enjoyable Sundays in recent memory. Gingrich’s “MTP” showing, in particular, should be chock full of gleeful knife-twisting. The line-up via WaPo:

NBC’s Meet the Press: Arnold Schwarzenegger; Newt Gingrich; Robert Gibbs, Senior Adviser to the Obama campaign; Hilary Rosen, Democratic strategist; Mike Murphy, Republican strategist; Chuck Todd, NBC

CBS’ Face the Nation: David Axelrod, Obama’s senior campaign adviser; Tony LaRussa, manager of the Cardinals; Tommy Lasorda, Dodgers manager; Jane Leavy, author; Michael Gerson, Washington Post; John Fund, The American Spectator; Norah O’Donnell, CBS; John Dickerson, CBS

ABC’s This Week: Robert Gibbs, Obama campaign senior adviser; Ed Gillespie, Romney campaign senior adviser; Bill O’Reilly, Fox News; James Carville, Democratic strategist; Mary Matalin, Republican strategist; Paul Krugman, New York Times; Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal; Jonathan Karl, ABC

Fox News Sunday: Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH); Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-MD); Brett O’Donnell, political debate coach; Brit Hume, Fox News; Mara Liasson, NPR; Kimberley Strassel, Wall Street Journal; Kirsten Powers, Daily Beast

Oh, I don’t doubt for one second that Mitt can handle himself in a townhall setting. Dude does them all the time on the campaign trail. It’s Obama he has to be prepared for. I expect him to be more on the attack and try to get Mitt off his game.Doughboy on October 7, 2012 at 10:16 AM

Consider this. After Obama’s meltdown the Dems know what they have to do. Obama has to come out swinging. He cannot run on his record or accomplishments so he will have to do a ‘Harry Reid’ and attack Romney personally as being more of a lying, unscrupulous scoundrel than he is.

You know what I am sick and tired of hearing? “we cant go back to the same policies that got us into this mess” Have you EVER heard them have to explain what policies they are even talking about? They cant name them and they know it. They get away with this stupid meaningless talking point.

I really with Mitt and Paul would go after them on this during the debates. They should be forced to name these so called policies.

Throat Wobbler Mangrove said:

Good Lord, Governor O’Malley is such a hack! When asked about the WARN Act, he said something like, “why would companies want to provide notice and create such a disruption?’ In other words, he is taking on the basis of the WARN Act, passed by a supermajority of a Democrat Congress in 1988. It took Chris Wallace to remind him that companies wouldn’t want to do so, so Congress made them provide notice.

O’Malley is abysmal. How does Maryland elect this clown?

The City and County of Baltimore.
Montgomery County.
Prince George’s County.
Anne Arundel County.
10,000 plus federal/union employees who work in DC, yet live in Maryland.

Night Owl on October 7, 2012 at 10:56 AM

Gibbsy is on MTP mouthing the standard issue line that Mitt wants a $5 trillion cut for the rich and a $2500 tax hike for the rest of us. Never mind the flagrancy of the lie, it has become the Obama line of attack. Good luck with that. The liberal tax policy study has been so debunked that even the authors have all but said, “never mind.”

bucsox79 on October 7, 2012 at 10:52 AM

I agree. I wish Mitt would destroy Obama on this.

The policy that got us into this mess is simple – Liberal fantasies that people who make 20k a year, should have gotten loans for 300k homes that everyone knew they could afford, and if they were minority borrowers, there should be no questions asked, ever. That is what caused all of the problems.

Risky loans that banks had to get off their balance sheets – hence they created MBS’s to get rid of the risk. That caused major problems that destroyed the system. That is the policy that got us into this mess.

Other problem – Too big to fail. Whose fault? Clinton’s, who passed legislation making the super-banks possible.

So, Democrats need to shut up with the blame and look at themselves as the culprits.

milcus on October 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM

I wished someone would just say they are going to FIX the government’s spending problem — overspending, all the duplicative programs, the waste, fraud and abuse…then take a good look at where we are and where we need to go. Just apply common sense and logic. It’s not rocket science!

I was among the hardest critics of Newt during the primaries. I have to give him props, though, for the work he has been doing since they were decided. He has been a regular and persistent champion of Romney on MTP and other shows.

Thank you Newt for your hard and effective work in promoting the Romney-Ryan candidacy!

MJBrutus on October 7, 2012 at 11:10 AM

Go Mary. Calls Krugman a liar!!!!

CoffeeLover on October 7, 2012 at 11:11 AM

ABC apparently believes one house Democrat operative on the panel (Stephanopoulos) isn’t enough, so they have added Jonathon Karl.

Just mind-boggling that ABC has stacked the panel this way. Maitlin is the only conservative on the panel. (Noonan isn’t a conservative and not much help to Maitlin, either.)

I take this as a sign that the producers at ABC are desperate to get their de-railed narrative back on track.

And Krugman is a damned liar.

CW on October 7, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Krugman sucks. Good to hear that he’s being called out.

22044 on October 7, 2012 at 11:35 AM

There were some good moments this morning. Newt was awesome as usual tried to explain to the commies that we have more oil than we can ever drill. But, they really don’t want to hear that. Wonder if anyone will ever bring up the fact that zero sold us out on keystone so the chinese can build a port in Western Canada and ship that oil to china. In trade ozero got a promise that china won’t dump dollars they now hold.
Later on DNC Dave destroyed Arnold who is soo dumb he came on a driveby show just to get his ass kicked.
Mary Matlin, looking good by the way, was awesome. She had the nerve to talk back to the vaunted liberal NYT star little Pauly Krugman.who was valiantly lying his way through obmanomics one more time.
The bent Axel was lying his ass off as well today with aged old Bob on CBS. His time trusted chatting points of what they inherited and you don’t want to go back to what ever the pubbies did, not saying what, and the latest of who showed up to the debate and kicked their manchrians ass allover the country etc., etc.Usual triangulated/astroturfed BS from the main man himself.
If this guy runs things, and he probably does, how could any country survive four more years of his assaults.

rodguy911 on October 7, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Arnold Schwarzenneger is the biggest, fattest most fraudulent, shameless, weasely POS in American politics if not the planet. John Edwards may be worse but at least Edwards had the vestigial shame to remove himself from the scene. Why this lying slab of Austrian lard is being interviewed by anybody much less on a national stage is beyond me and may be the most alarming sign of cultural collapse since the last Joe Biden speech.

This shallow, soulless POS won the governership of California on a set of promises and on an illusion of fiscal rigor and immediately capitulated to liberalism in spirit and law in every way imaginable. Who needs to wander into the squalid farce of his personal life? On his way out of office he even pardoned a known killer based on political cronyism. Everything he stood for was a lie. He’s the poster boy for the sick sham of RINOism and for the mutation of the American Dream in the cause of egotistical aggandizement.

Guess all the Dems are trying to brace for the campaign finance scandal coming up on Monday. Newt is still one of the best surrogates, cause he can answer questions & not get bullied like a lot of the rinos. If the left doesn’t want to hear it from Newt… they change the subject, they know better than to get goofy with him!

rob verdi on October 7, 2012 at 8:12 AM

Wendy Long is the Republican candidate who is running for U.S. Senate in New York against the incumbent Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand.

You can learn more about Wendy Long at her campaign website:

http://www.wendylongfornewyork.com/home

Interesting election factoid on this race:

Both Wendy Long and Kirsten Gillibrand are alumnae of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Right on. He’s an embarrassment. Like you wrote, He pardoned a killer because he was the son of a colleague/hack. There isn’t much worst then that. I’m glad I don’t have to repent for his sins.

But his personal life is pretty dismal also. I wouldn’t want to be his illegitimate child, hidden from view for 13 years. Or his humiliated wife.

I hope some entrepreneur is compiling the multi-DVD volume of all the Dems, Hollywood stars, and MSM hacks predicting Obama will win because he is an oratorical genius, and making preposterous excuses for his Denver debate debacle. It would be guaranteed to be a best-selling video, and I expect at least a whole DVD could be devoted to Krugsy the Clown, if not several of them!

Put me on the waiting list!

I don’t usually watch these shows, but today I caught the ABC roundtable. Two conservative women vs four liberal men–just the kind of ratio the libs like.
