Latest Romney ad hits back on Team Obama’s bogus “$5 trillion” claim

posted at 2:01 pm on October 7, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

The biggest item with which Team Obama was able to come out swinging following last week’s presidential debate (except for something about Mitt Romney being too “aggressive” and possibly trying to cheat on live television) was playing up their hilariously-contrived claim that Mitt Romney’s plan for ‘$5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy must necessarily raise taxes on the middle class or increase the deficit’ — a claim with which Robert Samuelson took umbrage:

To justify its $5 trillion figure — the estimated tax loss over a decade — the Obama campaign had to cherry-pick Romney’s proposal and the TPC analysis. It had to ignore any revenue raised by reducing tax breaks and assume that, faced with a conflict between the rich and the middle class, Romney would automatically side with the rich — as opposed to shielding the middle class from any tax increase. On Wednesday, Romney promised to protect the middle class.

The TPC report was widely interpreted as saying Romney would have to raise taxes on the middle class. It didn’t, says the TPC’s Howard Gleckman. It simply pointed out that he couldn’t keep all “his ambitious campaign promises.” He’d have to make choices and modifications. So what else is new?

Despite its highly imaginary derivation, Obama has continued to use the figure on the stump and the campaign has touted it as point-of-fact fodder (even though, when pressed, the logic starts to fall apart, heh), so the Romney camp is finally hitting back with an ad of their own disputing Team Obama’s numbers:

Unfortunately, the $5 trillion figure sounds sufficiently startling that Team Obama will probably keep using it (which means we should probably also respond with the significantly more frightening one of $16 trillion waiting in the offing), and we’ve still got another month of these campaign exaggeration/distortion/deception reindeer games with which we’ll all have to contend.

“exaggeration/distortion/deception reindeer games.”

Rudolph hardest hit?

Something else that smells like reindeer droppings: Politico is reporting that Team Obama claims to possess a nearly $1 BILLION war chest.

I find this Obama campaign total to be highly dubious in light of the fact that in 2008 – during the fever pitch of ‘hope n change’ – the COMBINED amount raised by McCain AND Obama camps was $1.1 billion, which made 2008 the most expensive purchase of the W.H. EVUH.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/index.php

And here it is, 4 years later, in the aftermath of the Great Recession, during the WORST recovery since WWII, with Obama approval numbers below 50, swing states still in contention, polls even, within error margin, and the Obama camp is claiming a war chest of almost $1 billion.

I find this Obama campaign total to be highly dubious. Time will tell.

HotAir is becoming the YouTube version of ‘Twitchy’.

Anybody else remember — back in the day — when HotAir used to do actual articles on weekends and especially on Sundays after the Friday night document dump(s) and the resulting responses?

The other important Conservative sites do — because they’re still doing it.

For example — here’s one Friday night breaking topic based on this story by CBS Sharyl Attkisson:

Lt. Col. Wood has told CBS News and congressional investigators that his 16-member team and a six-member State Department elite force called a Mobile Security Deployment team left Libya in August, just one month before the Benghazi assault. Wood says that’s despite the fact that US officials in Libya wanted security increased, not decreased.

Wood says he met daily with Stevens and that security was a constant challenge. There were 13 threats or attacks on western diplomats and officials in Libya in the six months leading up to the September 11 attack.

A senior State Department official told CBS News that half of the 13 incidents before September 11 were fairly minor or routine in nature, and that the Benghazi attack was so lethal and overwhelming, that a diplomatic post would not be able to repel it.

Wood, whose team arrived in February, says he and fellow security officials were very worried about the chaos on the ground. He says they tried to communicate the danger to State Department officials in Washington, D.C., but that the officials denied requests to enhance security…

Twenty-two elite Special Forces troops pulled out of Benghazi just ahead of the attack that killed Ambassador Stevens — despite the fact that everyone — including Stevens himself — was pleading for more security.

But HotAir is content with being the YouTube version of Twitchy because — uh — aw-heck if I know.

Something else that smells like reindeer droppings: Politico is reporting that Team Obama claims to possess a nearly $1 BILLION war chest.

they did not say he had a billion dollar warchest. they say that over this election cycle he has raised almost a billion dollars.

In 2008 he almost raised 800 million. So is a billion for a sitting president impossible?

Now i think a lot of it is illegal contributions from overseas given in ways to avoid accountability.

but he did the same things in 2008.

the difference this time is Mitt has almost as much money between him, thernc, and the superpacs. in 2008 Mccain only had 270 million to Obbamas 780 million.

Mitt will not get steamrolled because of money

Obama’s latest “debate” ad was just on here in Ohio …

… and I LIKED it …

because it was just as incoherent as the SCOAMF’s deabte performance!

It starts out on the $ 5 trillion Romney tax hike but using part of Romney’s response, mumbles something about how what Romney just said doesn’t make sense, THEN cuts over to Romney’s $ 4,000 middle class tax hike coming from Obama & Pelosi claim, THEN cuts to a rebuttal claiming the study on the $ 4,000/household was not by an independent organization …

… all mashed up into 15 seconds.

It was like watching an outtake from the debate! AWESOME!

Liberals find ‘validation’ in constant repetition of their ideas a,ong their own kind. Much like how MSM pundits quote each other instead of other sources. If Brokaw, Tingles, and Olbermann all agree, it must be true!

This never fails to make me laugh. Someone just posted it at HuffPo:

The Marine looked at the man and said, “Sir, Mr. Obama is no longer President
and no longer resides here.”

The old man said, “Okay,” and walked away.
The following day the same man
approached the White House and said to the same Marine, “I would like to go
meet with President Obama.”
The Marine again told the man, “Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Obama is no longer
President and no longer resides here.”
The man thanked him and walked away.
The third day the same man
approached the White House and spoke to the very same U.S. Marine, saying,
“I would like to go in and meet with President Obama.”
The Marine,
understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, “Sir, this is
the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Obama. I’ve
told you already that Mr. Obama is no longer the President and no longer
resides here. Don’t you understand?”

The old man looked at the Marine and said, “Oh, I understand. I just love
hearing it.”

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said,
“See you tomorrow, Sir.”

Don’t forget to vote
That old man is depending on you!!!

I see a problem with this ad.

Because the Romney campaign has herein elevated Cutter’s words, making her point seem definitive, you get the sense that the Romney tax cut is just “slightly less” than 5 trillion (added to the deficit). BAD. Better to stick with Romney’s own debate words, which convincingly gave the impression that there would be NO addition to the deficit.

So, clearly, this is a very counterproductive commercial.

ed is a lazy progressive. that’s why we get nothing new or relevent on the weekends. ed and allah are leftists at heart, am i the only one who sees how hotair has fallen apart from when it was run by true conservatives? really?

tm11999 on October 7, 2012 at 3:33 PM

there is really no reason for anyone to be rude, is there?

tm11999 on October 7, 2012 at 4:14 PM

Sleeper Cell Activation? Gee, tm11998 was much funnier.

BTW I was a regular at Captains’ Quarters before Ed moved here. He’s no “leftist”, I can assure you.

Now, welcome to my grading curve.

the WIDE-LOAD FLOTUS…

The War Planner on October 7, 2012 at 3:51 PM

Why is this important? It’s about hypocrisy, that moose plods around saying that schools should cut tasty foods from the menu, but sure O’s wife would only insist that she is “big boned.” I’ll bet that that’s true too.
What’s more, Michelle’s crusade against tasty food is likely to turn into a “food justice” thing, as the O’s typically follow Europe’s socialist lead on these social justice / diversity things, and in Sweeden we have the following:

Lunch lady slammed for food that is ‘too good’
Annika Eriksson, a lunch lady at school in Falun, was told that her cooking is just too good. Pupils at the school have become accustomed to feasting on newly baked bread and an assortment of 15 vegetables at lunchtime, but now the good times are over. The municipality has ordered Eriksson to bring it down a notch since other schools do not receive the same calibre of food – and that is “unfair.”

Who knows where this will end. O wants us all, rich or poor, to have the same (lousy) medical care. In the future maybe it will be “how can he eat that pricey steak, when we have climate change, and the poor man is stuck with Hamburger Helper!”

tm11999 on October 7, 2012 at 4:33 PM

Yeah, I thought you might run away from that. Spurious quips, innuendo and outright lying is what you came loaded with, and it blew up in your face.

Man, I love it when nutballs hoist themselves with their own petards.

We all know that Romney kicked O’s butt in the debate. But along with reminding people of this fact, shouldn’t we also be pressing on the reasons why. Such as: Romney provides a better chance for the average American to succeed, Romney is not an appeaser for the rest of the world, ie..Europe and the middle east; Romney is for making hard decisions that will affect all Americans; bottom line, Romney is for all Americans.

Looks like you’re wrong again. Imagine that?

Flora Duh on October 7, 2012 at 5:05 PM

hey cosmo bonehead, did you investigate their histories, no lies, innuendo, nothing. both of them are less than conservative. i know of no operators in this world that wouldn’t protect their opinions though. they just happen to be a little squishy.

Bless your heart, you looked all over and still found nothing to back up your nutball claims.

Hey, remember this gem?

there is really no reason for anyone to be rude, is there?

tm11999 on October 7, 2012 at 4:14 PM

of course you don’t. Things like that don’t apply to those like yourselves.

cozmo on October 7, 2012 at 5:14 PM

Why is it the scum liberals, including the liar-in-chief, can blatantly call Romney a liar in public, while we are unable or unwilling to tell the truth about oba-mao? That he a liar and has been lying to all the toothless phone recipients, etc. for four years. All the repubics can bring themselves to say is “untrue”, or “dishonest”…. They will throw the election just because they are terrified the media might say bad things about them. Well….. DUH!

Del Dolemonte on October 7, 2012 at 5:29 PM

so i take gophergirls and solaratov’s comments to mean they like the way this site is run NOW, better than when michelle ran it, am i right? the fact that gophergirls inane comment of “no one is forcing you to come here” sounds eerily like a 16 year olds ” i didn’t ask to be born” and solaratov wondering aloud about how MY life must be lonely since he has found his calm place here. in future, instead of getting personal, maybe you should try to expound on why it is you 2 think ed and allah are super conservatives, also, examples please.

tm11999 on October 7, 2012 at 3:56 PM

Okay I’ll bite.

Did I say I think that Ed and Allah are super conservatives? No I didn’t – in fact I think that sometimes Ed tries to be too fair and Allah is much to eeyore for my taste.

You are 100% correct that my comment was personal. HA is a free site and one that it is a privilege not a right to post at. Insulting the bloggers because they don’t fit your idea of “conservative” is downright rude. I find it funny that I never see you contributing to the discussion during the day. In fact I don’t recall seeing your handle at all.

So whine about personal attacks all you want – you are the one who started them. Again I repeat – if you don’t like the offerings at HA – no one is forcing you to read them.

gophergirl on October 7, 2012 at 5:33 PM

so you didn’t investigate, i see. outsidethebeltway.com, independantconservative.com, standfirminfaith.com, and of course wiki, which has plenty on these 2 guys. go ahead, look them up, i’ll wait.

tm11999 on October 7, 2012 at 5:35 PM

i’ll wait.

tm11999 on October 7, 2012 at 5:35 PM

You’ve been waiting…for a savior. He ain’t comin’ to save your sorry rear.

You made a stupid claim, refused to back it up and whine when folks don’t swallow your swill.

I know this was posted for flatfoot, maybe he saw the wisdom of the statement:

It must suck for you to be forced to be here.

cozmo on October 7, 2012 at 2:24 PM

I don’t see you as being that smart.

gophergirl on October 7, 2012 at 5:33 PM

Dang girl, next think ya’ know, you are gonna’ go all Cindy Mumford on the nutballs.

cozmo on October 7, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Oh. Real Reagan Conservatives (like The Boss Emeritus and others that are still here) don’t insult their hosts.

tm11999 on October 7, 2012 at 5:35 PM

As the accuser, the burden of proof is on you to prove what you’re claiming. Not on us to prove you’re wrong.

how laughable. noboby, not one of you will read ed and allah’s quotes over the years, REALLY! i just gave y’all numerous links to see for yourselves and you say “i refuse to back up my claims”. really, well, ok, i guess some here would rather continue the way they have been, no need to check bona fides on the people they profess to follow. look , none of you need tell anybody, especially me, but just at least read the wiki page on hotair!

Do you honestly think we “follow” Ed and AP? I have a news flash for you – sometimes I don’t even read their posts I just comment GASP!

Beauty of being a conservative – we can think, feel, and act as our own individuals. No help needed.
