Illegal immigrant reporter arrested, released

posted at 3:31 pm on October 7, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

You may or may not recall the story of Jose Antonio Vargas, the “undocumented worker” who became a reporter talking about immigration issues. As part of his “journey” to reach the American Dream, he obtained a drivers license in Washington State, allowing him to move about more freely and eventually obtain employment. Well, it seems that the drivers license in question is what wound up getting him in trouble in Minnesota this week.

Jose Antonio Vargas, the writer and activist who went public last year with his status as an undocumented immigrant, was arrested for a driving infraction in Minnesota on Friday, but federal immigration authorities did not detain him or take any other action, officials said Saturday.

Vargas, a former Washington Post reporter who revealed his status in The New York Times Magazine and touched off a debate in the journalistic community, was initially pulled over by a state trooper for driving while wearing head phones, Eric Roeske, public information officer for the Minnesota state patrol, told POLITICO.

The story was originally reported in the MinnPost, (which now has more corrections and walkbacks than any article in recent memory) but was picked up by Politico in the article linked above. The officer making the original arrest – for what was obviously a minor traffic infraction – indicated that there may have been “fraudulent activity associated” with the drivers license. After determining that the driver might be in the country illegally, he contacted ICE in accordance with the Secure Communities program, instituted originally under the Bush administration.

So what did ICE do?

An ICE official with knowledge of the situation said in an email that “Mr. Vargas was not arrested by ICE and no detainer was issued.”

An immigration detainer is a notice issued from the Department of Homeland Security to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies that tells them, “ICE intends to assume custody of an individual in [those agencies’] custody,” according to the ICE website.

This episode is rather confusing… at least to me. The entire immigration issue is such a mess these days that I rarely wade into it, and easy answers are not to be found. I also understand the point which some opponents make when they say that you simply can’t locate, round up and deport more than 20 million people scattered across the country. But Mr. Vargas appears to be in the country illegally by his own admission on multiple occasions. (I can find no source stating otherwise or any indication that he’s gotten into any sort of DREAMER documentation or what have you, but stand ready to edit this if that’s not true.)

With that in mind, it does leave one with what seems a pertinent observation. Okay… we get that you can’t find and deport 20 million people. But it seems like you could have found this guy without a lot of extra resources, eh?

Mr. Vargas related, in an article penned by himself, of his own volition, that he’s come to this nation having been ‘sent’ by his mother to live with a relative. He has admitted that he has obtained ‘fraudulent’ documentation of many kinds, including a Social Security number, or he would not have been able to attend the university or work. Here is his bio.

He boasted that he attended school, including college and the university, obtaining grants and financial aid, through these same means and using affirmative action programs to get where he wanted to go.

He is the most egregious form of illegal alien, as he boasts of his illegal status and demands that exception to the law be made for him.

Mr. Vargas should be deported back to the Philippines post haste, immediately following his release from prison following his convictions for these self admitted crimes, some of which are felonies.

Jose Antonio Vargas confirmed in a June 25, 2012 Time Magazine article that he was 31 years old, so he would not qualify as a “Dreamer” under Obama’s recent Executive Order.

Nope, I think liberalism was born the day somebody managed to produce some surplus food and somebody else convinced them to give it to somebody else.

‘Our system’ – all of it – is so hopelessly f@#$ed up now, I think it’s simply beyond repair, and too late to really do anything about it.

This is, I suspect, how the people who lived in all of the previously great civilizations felt as they watched the people in control acting with utter contempt for the country, the citizens, etc.

Rome’s burning, Nero’s fiddling, and there’s not really a damn thing we can do about it. Oh, I get that we’re working to vote Nero out of office and all, but… everything’s already on fire, and while the next guy may not be much of a fiddle player, I do believe he’s an avid harmonica player. At least the music will sound a bit differently as we continue to disintegrate.

Every newspaper or media company who ever hired Jose Antonio Vargas is also guilty of violating our immigration laws.

Here is San Francisco Chronicle Editor at Large Phil Bronstein’s confession:

I was duped. I once hired an illegal immigrant to be a reporter for the Chronicle.

“I don’t think I’m a criminal,” Jose Antonio Vargas told me when we met last week, right before he announced his status to the world. “Don’t make me seem guiltier than I am.”

Jose lied to me and everyone else he worked for, and that’s not kosher, especially in a profession where facts and, more elusively, the truth are considered valuable commodities.

http://blog.sfgate.com/bronstein/2011/06/22/i-was-duped-by-jose-vargas-illegal-immigrant/

And in the same confession, Bronstein highlights Washington Post Training Editor Peter Perl’s participation in the crime:

While publicity and good lawyers may save his residency, the most likely road kill in the Jose conflagration could be Peter Perl, a Post training editor who knew the secret and kept it. The Post said ominously that what he did “was wrong.” It’s the knowing that sideswiped careers of people like Meg Whitman and failed federal job candidates Zoe Baird and Bernard Kerik.

What penalties have Phil Bronstein and Peter Perl paid for their participation in this crime?

Didn’t need to find him. He’s announced his illegal status very publically, then he was pulled over, legally, for a driving infraction. No extra resources needed or used.

Pulled over not for his race, not because he was illegal and made it known, but because he broke a (minor) law. So, he should have been arrested and deported, right? How many soverign countries would not do so? Apparently, only us.

Third …

He’s NOT on welfare. Oh yeah, MILLIONS of your fellow Americans who were born here naturally are basking in the public dole – and you seem to have no problem with that as you keep voting for people like Willard McDole who consistently expand government and government run social and welfare programs …

Jose Antonio Vargas, the writer and activist

This 31 year old man has had plenty of time to take the proper action and begin the process of becoming a legal citizen of the country he wants to call home. As of now, he still receives all the advantages and opportunities that come from being a U.S. citizen by stealing them. America did not invite him to be a part of the greatest nation on earth. Honest people that wait to legally go through the lengthy and expensive proceedings of our immigration system , are not fighting to be an exception to our laws that Mr. Vargus arrogantly claims he is entitled to be.
Sorry, no sympathy here. When minors are illegally brought/sent to this country…they need to look to their parents as the ones who had the classification of illegal alien stamped onto their name…. and then take personal responsibility to fix their immigration status. Those like Mr. Vargus chose instead to whine and continue to take what they have no “right” to. The only right that exists for illegal immigrants is the right to pursue legal status in a forthright and law abiding manner. If they want to be respected and recognized as American citizens…then do what is necessary to finally earn it.

Rebar: “Please explain why it’s only America that has to abandon it’s sovereignty and let anyone who want to come here in? No other country puts up with that nonsense.”

It’s not just America. All historically White-majority countries (and only white countries) are under constant pressure from the mass media, from academia, from the political class and “respectable conservatives” (who deliberately fudge the obvious conservative position) to accept floods of legal and illegal non-White immigrants.

When White people object to this, the “anti-racists” (who are in fact anti-White, as a practical matter, shut down the discussion by yelling “racist!” or even “Nazi!”

This is why there were Black riots in London (with some Black-influenced White “chavs” joining in) and not in Taiwan.

The pressure is on White countries to take in non-White hordes (and suffer the obvious consequences); the pressure is not on any other race to accept being displaced in this way or else be called “racist!”

All this faux outrage over immigration really bothers me. Our arguments are very straight-forward and honest:

- If your undocumented, how can we know your not a terrorist. Its a fair question given in a post-9/11 world.

- If your undocumented, how can you expect to function in this country? Assuming you don’t get a fake-ID, fake driver’s license, or any other forgery. Our citizens do have to pay taxes, and to pay taxes you do need valid identification.

- If your undocumented, how can we be sure you are actually trying to assimilate into our country? This one is a little hazy due to the liberals deconstruction of our country’s principles over the years, but i think in some regards its still hard to argue. Our country speaks 1 language. Its just more efficient. Our country has a rich history of individual rights, liberties, and personal responsibility. By circumventing the process to assimilate into this country your trampling on all these principles too.
