Obama: “As a nation, we’re moving forward again”

posted at 4:01 pm on October 6, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Of course, they’re obviously going to spin any seeming drop in the unemployment rate, no matter how paltry, as a win due to President Obama’s policies (nevermind that the president told us that the unemployment rate would fall below six percent by now with the stimulus), and use it as an excuse to tell Congress that they need to do more to comply with President Obama’s agenda, that the financial recession was Wall Street’s fault, that we need to get behind Obama’s proposed tax hike, rabble rabble rabble — all the usual suspects.

After losing about 800,000 jobs a month when I took office, our businesses have now added 5.2 million new jobs over the past two and a half years. And on Friday, we learned that the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since I took office. More Americans are entering the workforce. More Americans are getting jobs.

But too many of our friends and neighbors are still looking for work or struggling to pay the bills – many of them since long before this crisis hit.

We owe it to them to keep moving forward. We’ve come too far to turn back now. And we’ve made too much progress to return to the policies that got us into this mess in the first place.

For example – two years ago, we put in place tougher, commonsense rules of the road for Wall Street to make sure that the kind of crisis we’ve been fighting back from never happens again.

These rules mean that big banks are no longer going to be able to make risky bets with your deposits. And if a big bank does make a bad decision, they pay for it – not taxpayers.

And we also put in place the strongest consumer protections in our history to crack down on the worst practices of credit card companies and mortgage lenders.

Jim Pethokoukis had some great posts yesterday explaining why the newly revealed unemployment rate isn’t so much a sign of going “forward” as going nowhere, but it would appear that the cheap, populist, soak-the-rich messaging is having an effect on at least some people:

President Obama and the Democrats shattered the election cycle’s fund-raising record with a $181 million haul for September, the campaign announced on Saturday morning.

The amount — a mix of funds raised directly by the campaign and large checks taken in by the Democratic National Committee — was even more than some earlier reports had suggested. And while it did not quite match the roughly $191 million Mr. Obama and the Democrats raised during the same month four years ago, the announcement offered a jolt of good news for Mr. Obama’s supporters in the wake of a lackluster debate performance on Wednesday that left many of them worried.

Romney’s September tally isn’t out yet, but this is it — we’re heading into the last month of crunch time, and both camps are going to be burning through their cash. Just in case you haven’t had enough of campaign spots popping up on TV and YouTube and whatnot with Team Obama hyping up the not-a-recovery with this type of messaging, the fun’s only just getting started.

“As a country we are moving forward.”

Less jobs in Sep than in Aug. Less jobs in Aug than in July.

Less jobs in 2012 than in 2011. Less jobs in 2011 than in 2010.

GDP from 3.0 to 2.0 to 1.3.

Gas from $1.79 to $4.00.

So, here we have the wind up: “Look! Unemployment is down! The BLS statistics show that unemployment is at its lowest level since I took office! OK, so that is showing us that you haven’t improved things, but then again, you didn’t break it further, so there is that, eh? But look! More Americans are getting jobs!

After losing about 800,000 jobs a month when I took office, our businesses have now added 5.2 million new jobs over the past two and a half years. And on Friday, we learned that the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since I took office. More Americans are entering the workforce. More Americans are getting jobs.

Next comes the slider. More Americans are getting jobs, see I said that. But, you might not be seeing that in your part of America, so I’ve got to convince you that my numbers are real and what you are seeing in your world is not.

But too many of our friends and neighbors are still looking for work or struggling to pay the bills – many of them since long before this crisis hit.

Now, having convinced you to believe me instead of your lying eyes comes the pitch, re-elect me, because everything’s getting better just like I told you and giving me four more years will let me keep making it better. Maybe we can get unemployment down to 7.5%! Because the policies that Carter and Clinton put into place didn’t lead to the Housing Bubble! No, it was Wall Street!

We owe it to them to keep moving forward. We’ve come too far to turn back now. And we’ve made too much progress to return to the policies that got us into this mess in the first place.

“Crisis”!? The “crisis” that started “long before” he took office? OK– suppose we concede that ridiculous statement but then one must consider this: Just how monumentally inept do you have to be as a leader to have failed to abate a crisis after almost four freaking years?

WE need to hire a MINIMUM of 150,000/month just to keep up with population growth.

He’s hailing 114,000 as ‘moving forward’?

With 23 million unemployed or acutely underemployed.

1 out of every 6 Americans living at or below the poverty level.

1 out of every 7 Americans on food stamps.

100 million Americans on welfare.

43% of all immigrants, legal or illegal, who’ve been in this nation for 20 years or more, on welfare.

11-20 million illegal aliens currently at large in the nation costing tax payers $113 billion/yr. for social services alone.

7-8 million illegal aliens, according to estimates from the PEW CENTER, holding full time jobs.

What a dismal excuse we have for a President.

Make that six years since his party had control of Congress since 2007 until 2010 and they still control one of the legislative bodies. They had plenty of time to avert this crisis, but held their ears and screamed “I can’t hear you” when the Bush administration tried to bring more accountability to Fannie and Freddie.

Am I the only one who has noticed that Obama never uses the term “we Americans” in his speeches? Even the title shot is annoying- “Your Weekly Address” as if this is a message from a king and we are waiting breathlessly for Saturday and to here what the rat-eared despot has to tell us for the upcoming week???

And by the way you coward and traitor, Congress isn’t as much a problem as you are. You’ve highlighted that they have not rubber stamped your socialism but said nothing about the fact that you just dropped off your legislation and expected them to pass it without question. You’d probably know more about OUR government if you started thinking as if you were an a American.

Happy Nomad on October 6, 2012 at 4:37 PM

Considering the latest ‘good news’ came after the BLS gamed the survey; shouldn’t Obama get Congress to lie *more* to the electorate? That’d turn this economy around.

Right. Let me check with Ambassador Stevens on the veracity of this joblessness report and get back to you.

And by the way:

But too many of our friends and neighbors are still looking for work or struggling to pay the bills – many of them since long before this crisis hit.

First of all, I’m pretty sure that NOBODY I am friends with, is friends with Obozo, or ANY of his friends. So who is “our”???

If it’s not someone we both know, then ANY of HIS friends are doing just fine, thank you very much. Please point to WHICH of YOUR friends is hurting financially Mr. Obozo. I’d LOVE to hear this.

And if it’s a rhetorical “our”, then that’s REALLY bogus, since the real jobless rate is closer to 14%.

The US added 114,000 new jobs in September, in line with expectations. But August’s disappointing jobs figure was dramatically revised upwards from 96,000 to 142,000, helping to bring the unemployment rate down to 7.8%.

Good news, right? Wait a minute…

Even if we add 300,000 jobs a month, we’re looking at a prolonged period of suffering — a huge cost from the Great Recession. So that’s kind of a minimal definition of success. Anything less than that, and it’s bad news.

Stagnant private sector wages (and wage cuts for some) plus RAMPANT inflation if you count fuel and food costs is moving forward? Working people are poorer than they have been in years. Those not working are in even worse shape.

Excuse me but you have to try a bit harder with your BS than this.

How they exclude food and fuel from the inflation stats is how they hide the decline. These are the two things that we need to survive as human beings, yet they don’t figure into the calcs.

They never identify themselves as Obama operatives just that they want to get you to register to vote. It annoys me because I think that anybody who does that stuff needs to identify who is paying them to do it (for both parties if there is any truth in the allegations coming out of Florida).

Well, they asked me today if I was registered to vote. I responded that I was because that was the only way we are going to be able to get rid of Obama. I walked away before they got over their shock. Mostly, I think, because I called them out on hiding their affiliation. They get away with it here because Virginia doesn’t register voters by party.

From my September Jobs Report Analysis…

The September Jobs Report: The Big Lie

First things first, in February 2009, there were 141.748 million Americans employed in the United States and the labour force participation rate was 65.6%. In September 2012, 140.025 million Americans were employed and the labour force participation rate had fallen to 63.6%. Between February 2009 and September 2012, the civilian non-institutional population grew by 8.859 million adults; yet, 1.723 million fewer Americans were working. In the last year alone, 1.1 million Americans left the work force.

Today’s expected — given the massacre in Denver and next month’s election — “unexpected” drop in the unemployment rate requires a willing suspension of disbelief. The “spontaneous uprising” in hiring of a whole 114,000 jobs allegedly caused a drop in the U-3 rate of 0.3%. In August, the US economy added 96,000 and the unemployment rate went from 8.3% to 8.1%. In July, the US economy added 163,000 jobs and the unemployment rate went up to 8.3% from 8.2% in June when only 80,000 jobs were created. Go figure.

Somehow…in a economy growing at a miserly 1.2%…873,000 people managed to find jobs. Of course, 582,000 jobs were part-time jobs, which the Left used to say weren’t “real jobs.” The addition of 873,000 jobs, which, according to CNBC, is “the highest one-month jump in 29 years.” That would have been in November, 1983…when the GDP was 8.5%. Once again, the annualised GDP rate for Q2 in 2012 was 1.2%.

If the labour force participation rate was constant, the U-3 rate would be 10.7%.

By the way, at a rate of adding 114,000 jobs per month, we wouldn’t return to full employment until 2025. 114,000 jobs per month would be great…if we were living in the late 1950s. We need twice that many just to maintain current employment. A robustly growing economy requires job creation in the range of 300,000+. Take a look at the number of jobs that were being created during the Reagan Recovery when GDP was 7-8%.

Finally, and before we turn to the report data, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke just embarked on QE-Infinity because:

“If the outlook for the labor market does not improve substantially, the committee will continue its purchases of agency mortgage-backed securities, undertake additional asset purchases, and employ its other policy tools as appropriate…We will be looking for the sort of broad-based growth in jobs and economic activity that GENERALLY SIGNAL SUSTAINED IMPROVEMENT IN LABOUR MARKET CONDITIONS AND DECLINING UNEMPLOYMENT. The U.S. unemployment rate has stayed above 8 percent for 43 consecutive months – the longest such period since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Although the unemployment rate in August fell to 8.1% from July’s 8.3%, THE DROP OCCURRED FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS — 368,000 FEWER AMERICANS WERE LOOKING FOR WORK AND THE LABOUR PARTICIPATION RATE FELL FROM 63.7% TO 63.5% — ITS LOWEST LEVEL SINCE SEPTEMBER 1981. If labour participation had remained at July levels, the unemployment rate actually would have risen. The Federal Reserve is, of course, well aware that THE UNEMPLOYMENT SITUATION IS FAR, FAR WORSE THAN WHAT IS BEING CAPTURED IN THE OFFICIAL HEADLINE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE of 8.1%. THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS FULL WELL THAT THE TRUE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, ONCE WORKFORCE PARTICIPATION RATE MANIPULATIONS ARE NETTED OUT, IS CLOSER TO 19%.”

If the employment picture was truly improving, Ben Bernanke would never have embarked onto the uncharted waters of QE-Infinity. Well, I shouldn’t say the waters are uncharted as the ships of the states of Weimar Germany, Mugabe’s Zimbabwe, Yugoslavia, Argentina, and others have been destroyed on the shoals of debt monetisation.

Psssssst. Romney kicked your boney ass.

fogw on October 6, 2012 at 5:15 PM

another goddamned FEC violation. The Marxist in Chief using his weekly address to parrot his campaign slogan (‘Forward’, comrades) – how in the hell is that ethical or in compliance with campaign regs. Likewise his continued gross abuses of the WhiteHouse transportation machinery.

rayra on October 6, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Pssst, in the debate, Romney handed you your azzzzz, cleaned your clock, and then ate your lunch.

Tin pot Marxist punk.

It occurs to me…why the qualifier? Obama said ” As a nation, we’re moving forward…”

Why did he feel compelled, or his speech writer feel compelled, to put that qualifier right up front “As a nation…” ?

What is he thinking of, in relation to his position, that isn’t included in his thinking as ‘moving forward’? As a people? As a global economy? As a domestic economy? What?

thatsafactjack on October 6, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Is this guy for real or is he only visiting our planet from some bizzaro world? Some of his statements causes one to wonder about his mental health.

Pavlov used a whistle to control the dogs, these wordsmiths of the left say nice words–like putting a needle in that apple on Halloween and the minions salivate and wag their collectivist tails as they trustingly (like Eve) reach eagerly for that apple..

Anyone else notice, in that photo above, Obama’s head appears pointed. Just thought I’d mention it.

A 32-year-old woman who works at a business I frequent asked me something about the new unemployment figure. She is uneducated, but is working hard to better herself, studying legal books to become a notary public.

She asked if I really believed that unemployment was down. This was the perfect opening to explain to her how the Labor Dept. does not count as unemployed adults who have quit looking for work – so that the unemployment number can go down while the number of unemployed people goes up.

This blew…. I mean BLEW!!!! her mind. She looked at me funny and asked where I heard something so strange. I emphasized that it is common knowledge, and that both Democrats and Republicans admit it.

To then complete her astonishment, I then explained how government math means that if everyone gives up looking for work, then the unemployment rate goes to zero, and the nation is considered fully employed.

Nice girl. I think she’s probably still in a state of shock.

cane_loader on October 6, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Maybe “forward” poll test well with the braindead union taught youth, but all I hear is straight up totalitarianism. A 5 year plan. When I hear “forward” I see stacked corpses and misery. Indiscrimate slaughter.

That’s my historical perspective of “forward”.

Talk about whistles…. loud & clear, dogeater. I hear you well.

“As a nation, we’re moving forward again”

If the debate drove one point home, it’s that Øbama has a stunning lack of command of facts and understanding of how this economy works. It boggles the mind that anyone, after almost four years in the White House, can be still such an economics illiterate. It suggests that Øbama has been an unserious president, a poser playing at being president, instead of taking seriously the business of state.

So I think RT has nailed it here…

I gotta say, I’m surprised Zero’s going full court press on these phony jobs numbers. Romney is going to destroy him on this at the next debate, chapter and verse, unemployment data point after unemployment data point…

As a nation, we’re moving forward again.”

Erika, I’m figuring he must be referring either to Egypt or Iran. He could also be referring to the *nation* of Islam–you know, Louis Farrakhan’s outfit.

We really need to have people sit down before we give them the truth.

1) Interesting that that woman knew in her gut the unemployment figure was fishy. I’ve been hearing that from virtually everyone I’ve talked to. No. One. Is. Buying. It.

2) Imagine the effect when Romney and Ryan explain what you told her to millions of voters in the next debates. This is why I am astonished that Zero is going so hard with this.

I’m not. The one constant throughout his career is the audacity of his lies. You might say it’s the secret of his success. He takes a lie where others wouldn’t dare. This is partly based on his faith in the media to smother the truth, and to undermine and eventually disable a counter-narrative; and partly on his faith in republican feebleness and fear in the face of Big Lies and the media guns which enable them. The nerve to double, triple and quadruple down on a lie or a false narrative is no small thing. It has certainly paid off for him.

any eager faces canvassing for romney?

No, not at my door.

Why does anyone vote for Obama? This week, in Ohio, I’ve had 2 eager faces come to my door, canvassing for Obama.

How did you respond?

Happy Nomad on October 6, 2012 at 5:04 PM

I just said I was busy, though tempted to give them the full “Hot Gas” treatment. But I’m better stopping and typing than talking in person. I get upset and exasperated, rather than persuasive.

Same for the woman from the Obama campaign who called me. Just said I was busy. I’m just beside myself at how anyone can support him, except for tribal reasons. And you can’t reach people like that.

As you say, Øbama and his handlers know they can confound, flabbergast and disarm Repubs by the sheer audacity of their lies. (It’s disgusting that we’re such easy prey for this trick, time after time.) It’s a tactic I was certain Øbama would use in the debate (but I was mostly wrong). It was a poker tell when the DNC guy said that Romney pulled that trick on Øbama during the debate, and that’s why Øbama was faltering.

More Americans are entering the workforce.

Where?

More Americans are getting jobs.

Doing what?

Or to put it another way, how many are wearing paper hats and asking if I want fries with that?

While barely surviving on minimum wage?
