Video: Hankygate

posted at 4:01 pm on October 5, 2012 by Allahpundit

The melodramatic slo-mo made me laugh, so I feel obliged to post even though most of you probably have already seen it elsewhere. Accusing the other team’s guy of using mysterious debate paraphernalia to cheat is an old-school blogosphere tradition. The left collectively wet itself over a mysterious bulge in George W. Bush’s jacket at the debate in 2004, making enough of a stink that the story got picked up overseas. (The bulge turned out to be a strap for his bulletproof vest, not a wire for an earpiece as liberals had speculated.) Our side countered at the time by noting that John Kerry appeared to have pulled something from his own jacket pocket that looked like a crib sheet. (It turned out to be a pen.) Suspicions about the Bush “bulge” broke big because it fit the left’s narrative that he was really just a high-functioning chimpanzee who needed his lines fed to him by Karl Rove. This new one, accusing Romney of using a crib sheet, won’t get as much traction because even most Mitt-haters accept, however grudgingly, that he’s a smart guy who’s fully capable of mastering the information needed to do well at a debate. Rarely during the campaign have even his detractors accused him of being stupid, and the notable exceptions had more to do with him allegedly being wildly “out of touch” than with being dumb. Remember, liberals think all conservatives are evil, crazy, *or* stupid, not *and.*

But yeah, this’ll still get some circulation on lefty blogs — and maybe not just blogs — for the simple reason that the Lightbringer was roundly humiliated on Wednesday and it’s easier to cope with that failure if you think something sinister and extraordinary was afoot in causing it. That’s why Jim Lehrer, who’s moderated endless presidential debates, is somehow now being treated as the X factor that caused President Uhhhh to have a bad night. All partisans use those defense mechanisms sometimes; the left thinks our side is using them right now. But yes, in case there’s any doubt: It was indeed a handkerchief in Romney’s hand.

Liberals don’t understand handkerchiefs; they think sleeves are for snot and they usually don’t even realize they are drooling anyway.

My bad. Second link failed to mention he’s a Mech Engineering PhD from MIT.

Off the chart.

They complain that Mitt is using a crib sheet but want Obama to be able to use TOTUS?

Seriously, here’s what the hanky was for:

You got to be kidding! This is the President of the United States on a world stage.

This makes OOTD at least.

Obama’s crib sheet typically sits at the moderator’s table.
Left Coast Right Mind on October 5, 2012 at 4:07 PM

Heh. IMHO the moderator tried in a very kindly way to help Obama extricate himself a few times, but Obama didn’t catch on. Personally,I don’t mind if the moderator did insert himself into the action. The fact Obama did not catch onto the prompts is as telling as his answers.

I don’t mind crib sheets either. I wouldn’t care if they both brought a briefcase. They will have all that in office.

I didn’t care when Palin wrote five words on her hand. I was impressed she wove a great coherent speech out of five prompts. Smart cookie

Must’ve been a teleprompter mounted in the floor.
chemman on October 5, 2012 at 4:21 PM

hmmmm. heh. hmmmm. Not impossible in this day and age, but it wouldn’t have to be on the floor. Probably not, but it would be funny if they had something set up, and he couldn’t read it/ or hear it. heh

I smell DESPERATION in the Obama camp.

And VICTORY is in sight!!!

Twitter, FB, Instagram,Emails, swing state newspaper websites, TV stations, radio stations, Yahoo News, NPR, HuffPo, ABC News….

LET US be the Media!!

When the left tries to spin something lets refute it like a swarm of truth-tellers (wherever we need to go).

Lightbringer is hilarious

Dork B. on October 5, 2012 at 9:30 PM

The first and last presidential debate which I watched was the first debate of 1960. A ground rule for the debate was that one could not use notes. Kennedy took a piece of paper out of his pocket and read what was on the paper out loud. That debate was credited with giving the election to Kennedy.

Really, Allahpundit? WHICH “Lefty Blogs”? You mean “Lefty Blogs” like THIS ONE? Moderated by Lefty Bloggers – like you?

Yeah – looks like it…..

Interesting. Conservative ploy to distract from all Romney’s lies during the debate?

Constantine on October 5, 2012 at 10:46 PM

He needed the hanky for the altitude.

Tater Salad on October 5, 2012 at 11:49 PM

Well. at last we can be absolutely certain that 0bama didn’t cheat… If he has crib notes from a 5th grader’s social studies midterm exam, or Forrest Gump feeding him answers through an ear bud, his performance would have been so much better.

LegendHasIt on October 5, 2012 at 11:51 PM

What’s up with calling everything “gate”? Is “controversy” or “scandal” too long to write out? Besides, it implies guilt.

cep on October 6, 2012 at 12:48 AM

it wasn’t a handkerchief. it was a birth certificate.

I took the Mensa entrance exam.. fell just short, only 133.. which was disappointing, but school was never much trouble after I learned to read.. late.. flunked the 1st grade, scrapped by till 3rd.. but by the 5th, I was reading at the college level..

I discovered early on, that those like Obama who are of a pedestrian intelligence, but who tell everyone how smart they are, are universally faking it.

Look.. I’m breaking my own rule about speaking on IQ’s.. it is an inexact science,.. but, I’ve run into phonies a lot over the years.. The best first rule..

Is if you brag to everyone how smart you are,.. you probably aren’t.

which is why I never bring it up. it annoys people, and frankly, there isn’t much difference between being in the 97th percetile.. than in being in the 95th.. inspiration, imagination,.. ambition.. all play a part,.. so having a high number is no promise of success. I do wish I had taken some college,.. maybe after the kids finish high school… I’ll see if we can go together..

I’d love it.. but I’m sure they…. would not.

cep on October 6, 2012 at 12:48 AM

yes… it does..

that’s why people use it..

But really… is having a running guns to Mexican drug cartels scandal.. any less implying guilt.. than simply saying something with a gate on the end?

None of it looks good..

But in this case.. crib notes, on a hanky?

really?

just makes it’s authors look mentally retarded… and completely desperate.

mark81150 on October 6, 2012 at 3:49 AM

Obama has a crib sheet, usually it’s the journalists asking the questions…in this case, the moderator stayed out of it and let Obama sink…

Jim did a great job, he let the candidates roll…and Obama go rolled.

right2bright on October 6, 2012 at 8:11 AM

Sigh… do we have to keep perpetuating a 40-year-old political meme?

TMOverbeck on October 6, 2012 at 9:07 AM

He brought his hanky so he’d have something to clean up the mess once he got through giving President Uhhhh a thorough drubbing.

And the left should LEAVE JIM ALONE. He did a fine job, much better than Snuffleupagus or Sawyers could ever dream of doing.

Look at the way it moves like cloth, and has no apparent writing on it. Amazing.

I knew Romney was rich, but a folded piece of paper with writing he can read that transforms itself into a piece of cloth with the writing gone in under two hours?

That had to be expensive… it looks like it was never ever even paper and never had writing on it. That had to cost a bundle to manufacture.

What you’re seeing in that video is Romney’s closing remarks being digitally transferred from the “hanky” into the wire-less receiver implanted into robo-Romney for delivery after Obama is forced (unfairly) to make a statement without 3rd party assistance.
