And maybe I shouldn't have been so harsh, but I'll tell you that if you had ever made a remark like that in front of my wife, she would have given you a tongue lashing you wouldn't soon forget.

But she likely takes little care of it, instead, signing paychecks to people who do.

I want to correct a misperception you are presenting here, assuming you're not just missing a sarc tag.

First, anyone who rides horses regularly LOVES their horse. It's not a gray area. You either LOVE horses or you don't care that much for them. There's almost never any in-between.

Second, if you're signing paychecks to people to take care of your horse, you're doing so because (a) you have the money and/or (b) they can provide better care than you can provide. If you question (b), see my first point.

I know this since...

1) my wife owns and operates a horse boarding barn, is 4-H advisor for our horse club and has coached our county's "Groom and Clean" team in Ohio's competition (and LOVES horses!) and my youngest daughter does English jumping, and...

2) my youngest daughter competes in English jumping, cleans stalls to pay for her own board, has competed in Ohio's "Groom and Clean" and Hippology teams, placed 1st in the Ohio State Fair horse skillathon, etc. etc. etc. (and LOVES horses!)

Horses are expensive, sensitive and opinionated animals that require constant attention and care to be worth competing with. And horse ownership is not a casual affair to owners, and for you to put forth that misperception is a serious miscalculation on your part when there may be horse owners in the audience who can and will call you out on your ignorance.

This doesn’t surprise me, although it does surprise me a little that he waited so long to do it.

It doesn't surprise me at all. It's all about the impact. Romney knew that any apology or walk back would be ignored, trivialized, or marginalized by a complicit media. I suspect he anticipated a "47%" attack at the debate, and was planning to apologize/walk back then, when 50-70 million people were watching.

That didn't happen, but all eyes are now on Romney, he's got a positive glow, and the apology will have some impact. It will also lessen the impact of the inevitable attact come Debate 2.

The two most important things that Romney did in the debate:

1. He kept saying "jobs, jobs, jobs", while Obama keeps talking about "planting seeds to grow our economy with new infrastructure, green energy, and hiring more teachers to prepare our children for tomorrow's world". After four years of misery, people don't want to hear this flowery, idealistic, Liberal crap. People want to know when they can go back to having a full time, secure job.

2. I know a lot of people on our side don't like this stuff, but it was very important for Romney to talk about bi-partisanship. After eight years of Bush hatred, Centrist Independents wanted the two parties to try harder to work together. They thought would happen with a President Hillary. Instead, they were sold a bill of goods, with Obama marketed as potentially the most bi-partisan politician in the history of mankind.

Now, after four years of Obama hatred from Conservatives, Centrist Independents are more desperate than ever for an adult to step in and get both sides to work together for the common good. Sure, that sounds to us like mushy appeasement, considering the MSM's definition of bi-partisanship (our side surrenders), but Romney does fit the bill on this issue, so why not sell it, if that's what sells?

It was great how Romney kept referring to the fact that he was a Republican to had to find a way to work with a state legislature that was 87% Democrat, and how Obama rammed through this massive health care bill without one Republican crossing over to vote for it. He even mentioned Scott Brown's election when making that point.

The term "reinventing" is a smear. Just because Politico thought that Obama's Romney Strawman was the real Romney, doesn't mean that he's reinventing himself.

But, I will agree that Romney appears to have changed his tactics for the much better - these are the tactics that I think most of us were hoping for after the Ryan pick. Hopefully Romney will keep it up. And, given the debate prep that Romney has done over the last month or so (see Costa's NRO article), I think that Romney should be able to keep this up at least in the debates, which would be a huge boon for him (debates will directly reach more people in an unfiltered manner than any other single thing that he does).

I had a slightly different take. Certainly he was ready to respond during the debate but, as others have well argued, there were reasons why Obama stayed away from the issue. You can't keep the image of likeable but incompetent in the polling if you are the one to start the personal attacks against Romney. Likewise, you'll note that Romney was very careful to attack Obama's policies not Obama personally.

I think the next debate will be more heated- especially with an audience asking questions.

"The real Romney is the one who can communicate. He's straight and direct and not fancy, forgivably jargony, but worried about America and sincere. That's the Romney who showed up for the debate. Stay that guy!"

“The real Romney is the one who can communicate. He’s straight and direct and not fancy, forgivably jargony, but worried about America and sincere. That’s the Romney who showed up for the debate. Stay that guy!”

Jackie Kennedy also (shudder) went hunting on her horse. Hunting for animals that fur coats are made from, no less. The Democrat media had absolutely no problem Adoring her for doing something they would trash Mrs. Romney for doing.

And don't forget the Kennedys actually had horses at the White House. "Macaroni" was the most famous example, and even showed up on the 1962 White House Christmas card.

The Kennedys apparently also kept 2 other horses at the White House; "Tex" was a gift to JFK Junior from Lyndon Johnson, and "Leperchaun" was a gift to the family from the Government of Ireland.

$100K in the hands of a private citizen that spends that money on horses or yachts does more to stimulate the economy than if the federal government takes that money for their wacky redistribution schemes.

I think that before Wednesday, there was no way Romney could have apologized for the 47% remark in a successful way. Before making an apology that people could believe, he first had to make himself appear as a man whose plan DOES regard the needs of everyone. He did that in spades on Wednesday night. Now he can apologize, and people will believe him.

That's probably not the origin of his strategy, but I still think it's the truth.

Making a case for the 100% is the smartest thing that Romney can do, since ALL President's are supposed to be working for the 100%.

The divisiveness and polarization that has engulfed the nation, particularly since the election of Barack Obama, is toxic and it must come to an end.

Dividing people by class, income, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and special interest group or grievance group, is anti-American. Much of it springs from the left, however there are those on the right who have been guilty of utilizing this same tactic. There are those who are eager to drive a wedge between Americans based on these issues and/or conditions for political gain, and that all too familiar hyphen between the designator of the special interest group and 'American' is that wedge.

That we now have a candidate, in Mitt Romney, who recognizes that it is the mandate of the federal government, and ALL those who are elected or appointed public servants, to serve 100% of the citizenry, rather than seek to offer some groups preferential treatment while castigating or ignoring others, is the best news this nation has had in a very long time.

The next debate won’t take place for nearly two weeks, and that’s on foreign policy, where the “middle class” argument won’t be relevant. If Romney sticks to jobs and wages over the last three years of recovery, he has an excellent opportunity to steal a march on Obama.

Slightly OT but I found it odd that the town hall format would be used on "foreign policy." According to the schedule the OCT 16th town hall format debate is both foreign and domestic policy. The OCT 22nd debate will the same format as last Wednesday's.

Which means two things. The "middle class argument" will be part of the next Presidential debate. And secondly, it means we know that somewhere around the 21st Obama will find reason to do something "Presidential" when it comes to propping up the myth more formally known as The Arab Spring.
