Not much of a revelation (like there was a question of the National Rifle Association giving their endorsement to Barack Obama, heh), but the NRA has finally issued their official presidential endorsement, hailing Mitt Romney as their vote for a “a friend of our Second Amendment freedoms and hunting heritage in the White House”, via AFP:
“Today we live in an America… led by a president who mocks our values, belittles our faith, and is threatened by our freedom,” said Cox in Fishersville, Virginia, where Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan, a congressman and avid hunter, attended a rally.
“So on behalf of the four million men and women of the National Rifle Association, representing tens of millions of NRA supporters, it is my honor to announce the NRA’s endorsement of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan,” Cox said in a statement. …
NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre spoke of the tight Obama-Romney race playing out in Virginia, “the front line of this election.”
“This is where the race could be won or lost,” he said. “This is where gun owners must make that difference.”
Team Romney accepted the endorsement with pleasure in a statement:
“It is the NRA that protects the Second Amendment. I am proud to have their support for my candidacy, and when I am president, I will do all in my power to defend and protect the right of all law-abiding Americans to keep and bear arms,” Mr. Romney said in a statement touting the group’s backing.
So, again, not much of a surprise, but seeing as how the National Rifle Association is an influential organization with over four millions members of all political stripes — and that, despite/because of the horrible Obama economy, the firearms industry is going gangbusters, yeehaw! — I can’t imagine the endorsement playing out as a negative anywhere but the already hyper-liberal circles.
And, just because it’s Friday and it’s awesome, I came across this little nugget a couple of weeks ago and have been saving it for a rainy day. Mitt Romney may not be much of a sportsman himself, but his running mate sure as heck is — and this is what real “girl power” looks like! Via CNN:
Gearing up for deer-hunting season, Rep. Paul Ryan bought hunting clothes for his daughter to go with the rifle the Republican vice presidential nominee gave her for Christmas.
“She’s hunted with me but this is the first time she gets to do the hunting herself,” Ryan said of daughter Liza. “She’s 10 years old and you can hunt starting at 10. I got her a rifle for Christmas last year and so I’m getting her ready.”
On Tuesday in Ohio, between a town hall in Cincinnati and a rally with GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Vandalia, Ryan stopped at Bass Pro Shops in the Forrest Park neighborhood to get his daughter outfitted for hunting season.
The outdoorsman went directly to the “Women’s Camo” area to check out their assortment of camouflage items.

For how long?
The whole furor over “undetectable” firearms is a crock and always has been. Until you can produce a bullet dense enough to do significant damage – but not made of metal – and a caseless propellant that works well enough, you can’t truly make an “undetectable” gun. Of course, the whole issue is a way to avoid dealing with the actual problem in these cases, which is the criminal individual(s) involved, not their tool of choice.
Oh, and let’s not forget the scanners in airports are *not* metal detectors anymore – they will spot this gun just as quickly as a Glock or a Colt.
I (at this point) wouldn’t trust a plastic gun. But, it might be useful in the near future. And, it certainly shouldn’t be outlawed purely based on the fear that anti-gun zealots have of it.

I love the future this technology could bring to firearms manufacturing, especially peripherals like magazines. The Printable lower receiver is already a reality, though not durable enough yet. Polymer receivers are interesting, affordable and are a great alternative right now.
Making an entire, reliable, functional, durable firearms with this technology is still far off.
But it’s awesome that its on its way.
In the meantime, you could buy yourself a veritable arsenal with the money it would take you to buy a decent printer now.

For all you fellow Second types: Would you trust a printable firearm right now? The technology is in its infancy and I, for one, want good old-fashioned American steel. The weight of it commands respect and caution, even before I ever fired it. The thing tells you to be sure you handle it right, with all safety, unlike with some liberal rich college kid who gets a Porsche for his 18th birthday.
Schumer is coming across as a total comic here, like his niece Amy who does comedy for a living. Except Chuckles is serious!

They strip me of everything but the rivets in my jeans, hand scan me, then still accuse me of hiding something.. pockets inside out no belt, no shoes, no phone.. nothing but skin cloth and a very frustrated sense, the guys running these scanners are not bright..
We used them to check folks coming into a restricted area in the early 80′s, and there is a lot of common sense required to not make yourself look stupid.. you can’t peg out the sensitivity then tell a person with implants you have no idea why it says your neck is packing…

If they can stop you from hand-making your firearm using a 3-D printer, that means they can control how firearms are made. If they have that control, they can impose limits that make firearms even more impossible to obtain than they are today. “All firearms shall be made using technology that… [no one can afford!].”

any reasonably competent machinist can or could make a home made firearm design, all you need is a barrel, chamber, some kind of receiver.. or even more basic.. a steel pipe with a spring, and a threaded cap, striker, and a round of the correct size..
all the early sub-machine guns were put together from stamped parts in a machine shop.. The Czechs were good at it.. The Italians..
You can make everything illegal.. and if nothing else, the same drug smuggler who walks across the border with coke.. can as easily carry a load of handguns..
The nonsensical thinking, a ban solves everything is just nuts..
Part of my training included making an airbase unusable to the enemy, no details.. but the kinds of traps, sabotage and just plain mean mean area denial techniques they probably still teach.. are immune from any gun law..

Anyone who has passed High School Metal Shop and has access to Sears or Home Depot is more than capable of creating highly functional fully-automatic weapons. They’ve been around for over a century and it ain’t rocket science to plan out and construct one.

In the 60s, when I was in grade school, there were ideas about making clothes out of paper that were one-use. So was the videophone, but that was abandoned quite soon. Yet, we have it.
My point in all of this is that, if we could expand the technology to ‘print’ clothing — just that — we could free up land that grows cotton and plant more food crops.
Except for liberals like Schumer, who would want to get involved with advancement and find ways to regulate and tax it all.
My view is that, when you really come down to it, liberals are the dinosaurs that stifle the advancement of Man.

I’ve seen sample parts made from this technology. Material density is virtually 100%. Highly detailed part geometries are possible. One part I saw had an internal 1-64 UNC thread printed (not tapped) inside it. The main issues in the short run include:
* Cost of printing machine
* Cost of powdered metal
I expect the cost curves for metal printing to follow the same trend as for resins. However I would be wary of chemical purity and be prepared to do destructive testing on high-stress parts.

This debate brings up an issue that has not been addressed at all by control advocates, probably because it’s a non-starter.
When they talk about banning assault rifles, for example or banning high-capacity magazines, they aren’t talking about banning either. They’re talking about prohibiting their possession by citizens.
Which, as has repeatedly been pointed out, means these weapons would only be possessed by law enforcement, the military, and criminals (who do not, by definition obey the law, including gun-control laws).
The only way to ban a weapon is to ban the manufacture of the weapon. They know it and we know it. But, they won’t say it.
However, they continue to use the term ban when it has no application to what they’re talking about.

A nice lathe from Grizzly or HF… some DRO… an old computer… a visit to Little Machine Shop… some bulk stock from Amazon… some open source blue prints in digital form…
That do it at home cat has been out of the bag for a decade. Low barrier to entry to get into the home machining realm. And we aren’t even up to the open source maker machine: the 3D fabricator that can make its own components. You can already do that with a lathe. There is already a home gunsmith community.
Plastic will lower that cost to entry.
So will a trip to HD or Lowes for steel pipe and structural conduit.
The plastics have to really get up to where metals are for long term utility. Even the old USSR had to finally give up on trying to stop individuals from making firearms because it didn’t work. Unfortunately the Left cannot learn from anyone’s experience, even those that they once lauded. They deny human nature and the cost is always high in blood.
