Report: National magazine preparing “blockbuster” scandal story on Obama campaign donations

posted at 9:27 pm on October 4, 2012 by Allahpundit

If the term “Doodad Pro” means anything to you, none of this will come as a surprise.

President Obama reelection campaign, rattled by his Wednesday night debate performance, could be in for even worse news. According to knowlegable sources, a national magazine and a national web site are preparing a blockbuster donor scandal story.

Sources told Secrets that the Obama campaign has been trying to block the story. But a key source said it plans to publish the story Friday or, more likely, Monday.

According to the sources, a taxpayer watchdog group conducted a nine-month investigation into presidential and congressional fundraising and has uncovered thousands of cases of credit card solicitations and donations to Obama and Capitol Hill, allegedly from unsecure accounts, and many from overseas. That might be a violation of federal election laws.

If the term “Doodad Pro” doesn’t mean anything to you, get up to speed so that you have the background needed to appreciate this new story if/when it drops. Start with Patrick Ruffini’s post from the end of the 2008 campaign explaining how lax security on Obama’s campaign donation website created an opportunity for fraudulent donations. The Washington Post picked up the story a few days later, reporting that the campaign not only was accepting money from untraceable prepaid credit cards but that it “had chosen not to use basic security measures to prevent potentially illegal or anonymous contributions from flowing into its accounts, aides acknowledged.” Team O’s defense at the time was that they preferred to manually eliminate any bogus donations that flowed in by scrutinizing their books afterward and rejecting the ones that looked suspicious. Why they’d prefer a time-consuming process like that when they could screen donations before they were accepted with online security measures, as many other campaigns do, wasn’t clear.

Fast-forward four years, when the campaign once again had to decide which measures to take to prevent online donation fraud. Time to learn a lesson and institute front-end screening? Apparently not: A video posted to YouTube in April suggested that they’d disabled their donation security measures again. (The measures may since have been reinstated. I’m not going to donate to find out.) No way to tell yet if this sort of thing is what the forthcoming scandal story is about, but the description in the excerpt sure sounds familiar. And if it is the same thing, then it’s essential to understand that people have been complaining about it for years. Team O is fully aware of the objections by now; if it’s still happening, it’s because they didn’t care enough to stop it. And if I’m wrong about all this and the story has to do with some entirely different donation scam, well, that’s even more interesting. To raise $150 million in a month, you need an awful lot of donors. And we know that when it comes to donors, Obama’s not picky.

So what if there’s a new exposé on Obama’s illegal fund raising, and it all turns out to be true? What will be done about it?

Obama is simply above the law.

F&F and Libya both have a body count, and some people don’t really seem to care. What makes us think they will care about some credit card scam? Maybe, Obama’s incompetence getting people killed is too bitter a pill to swallow, but the head-in-the-sand crowd will get all wee-wee’d up over something less scary like fake credit cards? I guess it is worth a shot.

joekenha on October 4, 2012 at 10:26 PM

I agree but something was indeed wrong with Obama last night in that his arguments (or lack thereof) were horrendous – Barry would assert something and Mitt would hit him with a counter punch and too many times last night he simply didn’t respond, basically conceding that Mitt was right (or at the very least not worthy of a response). I still say that something we don’t know about it going on behind the scences – a terrible jobs report, an impending Isreali strike, etc. I can’t imagine that Woodward would have said that without at least a bit of merit behind the comment. I’m starting to get the sense that Obama is indifferent as to whether he wins or loses – this is the second time that he’s phoned it in (the first being the DNC convention) during critical junctures in the campaign. That doesn’t happen to someone that really wants to win. I don’t get it – I’m happy about it, but I don’t get what’s going on.

That’s what I’m thinking. Bad press, and the breath of scandal, tend to put a damper on a candidate’s chances at the ballot box.

Given their coverage lately, I think CNN would run with this story in a heartbeat. Of course, FNC and the conservative press will be all over it.

So they’re up to 4 years ago and the illegal overseas donations and the past 2 years (in particular) of laundering donations through Solyndra-type situations that we’ve all known about in the conservative blogosphere and small conservative publications. Congratulations.

andycanuck on October 4, 2012 at 11:18 PM

My guess is that as the facade that is the Obama administration begins to crumble, there will be a rush of these stories. Maybe because the media that created him doesn’t want to take the blame for his downfall. They rather see it implode on itself. Or maybe all these “journalists” holding their tongue with plans to make money with books later will instead try to beat each other to the punch as they see the end draw near.

The more I think about it the more I think that even if this is the topic of the alleged article it’ll be a nothingburger. Obama can blame others for the “mistake” and all will be forgotten by lunchtime the same day. No, I’d say that if some external event has Obama rattled by some outside event then it would have to be something for which there is no spin and therefore no escape (e.g a stained blue dress moment variety). Although, it could be that he’s just an arrogant jerk and how he behaved last night is how he behaves all the time.

I think Obama’s looking down was because his strategy was to play not to lose his temper or get snippy with Romney. He was looking down with the pained expression on his face because he had to strain to keep his cool.

If they let him come out swinging in the next one, he will probably get beaten worse. Obama is not a nice person at all, we want to get him to show that.

On foreign policy, he hasn’t developed any personal relationships with ANY foreign leaders. NONE. He is Putin’s little butt boy and Iran is laughing at him. He is incapable of forging friendships except with people who reinforce his narcissistic view of himself.

The outfit that set up Obama’s campaign contribution website is Blue State Digital. The company is run by Thomas Gensemer, Jascha Franklin-Hodge, and Joe Rospars. The latter is the Chief Digital Strategist for Obama For America 2012.

Blue State Digital specializes in setting up fundraising systems for left-wing advocacy groups.

Their website shows a sample page for entering in credit card info (http://tools.bluestatedigital.com/kb/article/what-is-a-contribution-form-fundraising-page). The sample page has no field to type in the 3-digit secret code on the back of your credit card (no CVV2 code).

An enterprising reporter might want to try phoning Joe Rospars to ask why the Obama for America website doesn’t enforce AVS or CVV2.

It would also be interesting to know what other websites Blue State runs that also don’t enforce AVS or CVV2, to see if there is a pattern.

This is old (and continuing) and known. It won’t get any traction and won’t hurt obama, unfortunately. If Romney were smart he would set his payment verification exactly the same as BO’s. The press would have to either shut up about that, too, or blow the whistle on both.

Rightyismighty on October 5, 2012 at 6:52 AM

The audacity of Mitt Romney! How dare he even condone an investigation into campaign finance irregularities at a time like this. Pres Obama is hard at work trying to get jobs for 15 million Americans, health insurance got 50 Million folks, ensure retirement security to 150 million retired folks, lower taxes on 300 million middle class folks, and keep the big banks and greedy capitalists like Bain Capital from foreclosing on the houses of 500 million American family folks. It’s a tough job, and all Mitt Romney can do is paint Mr. Obama a criminal. Despicable (and also dripping with sarcasm, please don’t flame me)

tdarrington on October 5, 2012 at 7:38 AM

People suggesting that is why he lost the other night because he was “thinking” about this, get real.

Since when has Barack ever had to “worry” or dwell on the thought of a scandal coming out???? He is still getting away largely with the Libya debacle where people were killed. So if the media doesnt beat the drums on that, who the hell thinks theyll even touch this story?

Barack can do pretty much anything, and he knows it. The media will not treat him the same, so most of the country will never hear about this, just like probably half the country dont know about the entire story on Libya.

This will be a news flop. Now, if anyone expected anything to be done about it, it would be a huge story. But since Obama has gotten away with murder,(F&F,Benghazi) it will be, so fkg. what!

Reminds me of a stunt a friend of mine pulled when I was over in Iraq in ’08. News got out that the Obama campaign’s donation process was, shall we say, lax.

He sent $5 using a debit card (in his own name), filled out the donor name as “Muqtada al-Sadr” (who you may remember led a Shia militia in Iraq), created a quickie Hotmail email account, listed the address as 1060 West Addison St in Chicago (Wrigley Field), and sent it in… and apparently never saw the $5 again. Bear in mind that in addition to the three red flags above, he performed the transaction in Iraq.

So something like this seems pretty believable to me.

Q. Do you know why there are Marines on ships.

A. Even the squids want door-men.
