Video: Tucker Carlson presses his case on 2007 Obama speech

posted at 10:01 am on October 3, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The morning after the big reveal on last night’s Hannity, The Daily Caller’s Tucker Carlson appeared on Fox and Friends to press his case that the media deliberately underplayed Barack Obama’s June 2007 speech to Hampton University.  Carlson tells Steve Doocy that the media covered the speech — including himself — but limited their reporting to the prepared remarks.  Had they played the actual tape, especially when Obama talked about New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina, the 2008 Democratic primary may have looked a lot different:

Daily Caller editor-in-chief Tucker Carlson said on Fox and Friends this morning that the “very revealing” clip is an example of Obama using racially-charged rhetoric.

The speech, given at Hampton University, also shows Obama shouting out Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who was in the audience. He tells the crowd, “The people down in New Orleans they don’t care about as much!”

Carlson explained that in his view, “Obama is telling a majority-black audience that the federal government doesn’t like them because they’re black. He is whipping up fear, and paranoia, and hatred.”

Actually, I think the larger point here isn’t that Obama pandered to black audiences. Every Democrat on the national stage does that.  Hillary Clinton adopted what we could gracefully call a “Southern patois” in similar circumstances at that time that doesn’t emerge under any other circumstances. John Edwards’ Carolina drawl grew stronger in those appearances, too. Joe Biden did the same a few weeks ago in order to feed the same kind of racial demagoguery with his “They gonna put y’all back in chains” comment to a predominantly black audience in Virginia.  Anger and demagoguery along racial lines are not an exclusive province of Obama, not then and certainly not now.

The larger point here is that the media has a double standard on race, and a double standard for Republicans.  They like to talk about “dog whistles” among conservatives that — last time I checked — includes the words “Chicago” and “basketball.”  When a Democrat of any background gets up and flat-out tells a predominantly black audience that the federal government likes the “suburbs” better than “our neighborhoods,” it doesn’t even get so much as a dog-biscuit mention by the media.  When Tucker calls the original coverage “a subversion of what journalism’s supposed to be,” he’s absolutely right.

Will this video change minds about this election?  I doubt it.  Partisans have already chosen sides, and the undecideds and low-information voters will care more about the economy and perhaps the cover-up in Libya.  This, however, serves as a good data point about media biases and double standards.

For some reason ue doesn’t want to answer my question. Probably skedaddled off to a different thread. There should be some kind of rule that trolls aren’t allowed to post in a new thread if they’ve left unanswered questions in another one. ;-)

Dude, you can post that this video was meaningless all you want but it doesn’t make it any more true now than the hours ago when you were given your marching orders.

The fact of the matter is that Rush just spent an hour and a half going through that video. Hannity will as well. The MSM is at least acknowledging it though they like you are filthy liars. Nevertheless, at least a few people will be put off by the racist Obama of 2007 and the rat-eared coward isn’t so far ahead he can lose those votes. Which why you people are so desperate for everyone to believe that this was “nothing.”

If nothing else it exposes Obama’s true character for the racist hate-filled monster he is.

Happy Nomad on October 3, 2012 at 1:29 PM

When your enemy is trying to give you advice and tell you how much something has flopped that’s when you know they’re scared.

Most of us already knew Zero was a race-baiting poverty pimp as the video and subsequent behavior clearly (e.g. [Cambridge] “police acted stupidly”) illustrates.

The value in seeing it now is how clearly illustrates Obama as a fraud, a media creation, and the fraudulence of the Old Media and those shills still pimping him.

Is Maddow trying to say that, if he wasn’t ‘black enough’ (a term liberals use against Conservatives like Allen West all the time), liberals wouldn’t be so in the tank for Obama?

Just how does Maddow define ‘more black’ and ‘this black’?

Well, lying about Katrina is such a black thing – er, wait a minute. It’s actually a liberal/left thing. Never mind.

Black people don’t even talk like that. He faked his fakery. It’s hilarious to watch the video, especially knowing what all he spewed, and how, since then. I like that it came out now, so the comparison can be made.

Can someone, aside from Flora Duh, focus on how much he lied in that video. He lied about NO, he lied abut the ACT, and he was a senator then, he lied about the money, he lied about at least 50 things. I’m surprised his nose didn’t fall off in that speech. That is the morsel in the video, aside from his fakery.

Decent blacks, he has you fooled to no end. He doesn’t care about you one iota.

I know, it’s al almost tragi-comic, plus it speaks volume about the silly crowd sitting in that church and listening to this fraud spouting egregious lies in an invented/non-existed accent supposed to mimmick their own…I mean, seriously, how low is low information, how stupid is stupid …as for your last sentences, I beg to differ, a black person fooled by this fraud (and the likes of him) endlessly is not decent, nope, they are lazy individuals who are turning this country into Greece because they either don’t care to inform themselves, or because they know better but they like their moocher status…I am usually looking for the gray area in everything, but there’s none here, it’s pretty much black or white….

Yes a video was released in 2007 that the media reported on, but they were reporting on the released transcript that didn’t include the boy king’s off-script remarks about 9-11 and New Orleans.

You know while on the subject, New Orleans may be a chocolate city but it hardly suffered alone. The entire region from Mobile to the Texas Louisiana border suffered damage from Katrina and Rita. What was the most telling was that Mississippi (under a Republican governor) rebuilt quickly. New Orleans under Nagin and Kathleen Blanco kept promising progress but delivered very slowly. The lower ninth is still largely uninhabited.

What is it with the left and the “middle class”? Their policies are destroying the middle class, which is the whole Marxist/Alinsky agenda. This administration’s weak dollar policies, QE1-3, are destroying the dollar, and their energy policies, including their war on coal, are driving up energy costs. New Orleans, after Katrina was a lesson to be learned.

In that situation,I’d walk a few miles to a spot where I would be spotted alone. Takes about an hour and a half of walking. Even with children, it’s a manageable journey. A rescue helicopter would pick us up in about five minutes.

Meanwhile, the mindless, liberal sheeple are herded into a convention center hellhole for three days by the media and government bureaucrats. No rescue helicopter is going to land in the middle of that mob.

Something to keep in mind.

Here’s one:

The then-U.S. Senator tells the audience that the federal government waived the Stafford Act for New York after 9/11 and for Florida after Hurricane Andrew, but not for New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

That was a lie:

[T]he federal government did at times waive the Stafford Act during its reconstruction efforts. On May 25, 2007, just weeks before the speech, the Bush administration sent an additional $6.9 billion to Katrina-affected areas with no strings attached.

As a sitting United States Senator, Obama must have been aware of this. And yet he spent 36 minutes at the pulpit telling a mostly black audience that the U.S. government doesn’t like them because they’re black.

I think it could change some people’s minds such as young adults who voted four years ago when they were 18 or 19 and are now 23 or 24 years old. This is where my son falls in, and his friends were voting for Obama because it was their first election and “it was the cool thing to do”. Forward to 2012, many of them are buried in student loans, unemployed or working 30 hours a week for $9.00 an hour. Some have friends in the military fighting in the Middle East. Last summer I heard them say they probably wouldn’t vote, but some have changed their minds since then. This video might help drag them to the polls to cast a vote this time that might actually help them have a future.

Some may also recall the huge herd of Katrina troublemakers (from the Iberville housing project) gathered on the I-10 overpass which began heading across the Mississippi River Bridge towards the West Bank neighborhoods and Oakwood Shopping Center to loot and pillage.

The perps did manage to loot much of that shopping center but were mostly contained up on the elevated West Bank Expressway by Jefferson Parish sheriff Harry Lee and the Gretna police departments.

After Katrina the usual race baiters tried to blame the late Sheriff Harry Lee as being racially motivated. Sheriff Harry Lee is of Chinese ancestry so the race card flopped then as it had before on similar $harptonesque blame games tried by the usual suspects pre-Katrina.

Flora…the ‘why did Obama lie’ line…
I get it. You think he ‘lies’ all the time.
I don’t know if it got something wrong there or not.
Whoopdeedoo if he did.

Well bless your little heart. Trying to act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. Just to refresh your memory.

Down in New Orleans, where they still have not rebuilt twenty months later, there’s a law, federal law — when you get reconstruction money from the federal government — called the Stafford Act. And basically it says, when you get federal money, you gotta give a ten percent match. The local government’s gotta come up with ten percent. Every ten dollars the federal government comes up with, local government’s gotta give a dollar.

Now here’s the thing, when 9-11 happened in New York City, they waived the Stafford Act — said, ‘This is too serious a problem. We can’t expect New York City to rebuild on its own. Forget that dollar you gotta put in. Well, here’s ten dollars.’ And that was the right thing to do. When Hurricane Andrew struck in Florida, people said, ‘Look at this devastation. We don’t expect you to come up with y’own money, here. Here’s the money to rebuild. We’re not gonna wait for you to scratch it together — because you’re part of the American family.’

What’s happening down in New Orleans? Where’s your dollar? Where’s your Stafford Act money? Makes no sense! Tells me that somehow, the people down in New Orleans they don’t care about as much!

When this is what actually happened.

by January 2007, six months before Obama’s Hampton speech, the federal government had sent at least $110 billion to areas damaged by Katrina. This was more than five times the money that the Bush administration pledged to New York City after 9/11.

Moreover, says the DC, the federal government did at times waive the Stafford Act during its New Orleans reconstruction efforts. On May 25, 2007, just weeks before Obama’s speech, the Bush administration sent an additional $6.9 billion to Katrina-affected areas with no strings attached.

So tell us sweet pea, why would a man who is running for president, tell a black audience a blatant lie like this if not for the purpose of creating the narrative that the federal government only takes care of areas where white folk live?

Don’t forget, he was a senator at the time, so he knew exactly how much money had been sent to New Orleans.

it changes nothing for Obama…it changes nothing for Romney.

You just keep on trying to convince yourself of that darlin’.

A group did try to walk it out. The went from the convention center over the Crescent City Connection where they were turned around by the police. It was one of the most common examples of “crimes against blacks during Katrina” that was brought up. Of course what those complaining wouldn’t say is that there were no facilities for them on the Westbank and the mall next to the bridge was ablaze by looters (mall was closed for nearly two years and lost an entire wing).

The real lesson from Katrina was that one cannot and should not assume that government will be there immediately to make it all better. Oh, and if you don’t have a safe place to stay, get the hell out! There were people who actually drove to the Superdome.

People exist who voted for Obama last time and aren’t quite willing to admit they were duped. Every one of these revelations of his deceit, his chicanery, his manipulative nature, each one adds to the pile of reasons to change their vote. Others are truly undecided and have been wavering during the merciless MSM pummeling of Romney’s college days and the fact that he’s just too darned rich. This, however, serves as a good data point about media biases and double standards.

One among countless thousands that people already recognize or already willfully disregard.

At some point, the honest truth here is that none of this matters except to infuriate one group and cause massive shrugging in the other.

Until things start exploding, government starts shutting down, entitlements dry up and stop, and rioting/looting/killing begins in the streets, nothings really going to substantively change the course we’re on at this point.

I’m not advocating or longing for it, it’s just the way it’s going to be, imo.

I’m aware of what they did especially to the JC Penney store fire and the transporting of much of the Dillard’s department store over to the Fisher Housing Project less than a mile away. I was later involved in the cleanup of an area only a few miles away from that location once Jefferson Parish allowed outside relief efforts to begin.

I know a number of fellows on SWAT teams in Jefferson Parish who had to deal with looters stupid enough to take shots at them where they returned fire dropping those looters permanently. Their procedure was to leave the looters where they dropped.

It’s important to distinguish how suburban Jefferson Parish (same as county) handled the invading urban looters as compared to how Orleans Parish (City of New Orleans) source of the urban looters handled the urban looters.

And you say the reason he did was to purpose of ‘creating the narrative that the federal government only takes care of areas where white folk live’.
You see his comments solely as about blacks when it seems he’s more speaking of the poor and the disenfranchised.
Nothing radical here…and fully in line how many were viewing the situation.

Again, let it go.
Move on.

You say Obama ‘lied’ here.
He didn’t.
See:
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-08-28-rebuild_N.htm

Uh, yeah, he did, and I’ve already shown where he did. The link you provided doesn’t contradict anything I posted, just talks about how some funds took time getting to New Orleans. Guess what, I lived in S. Florida when Andrew hit, it took time for funds to get there too. In fact, there’s still areas of Homestead where Mexican farm laborers lived that look as bad as the 9th ward.

And you say the reason he did was to purpose of ‘creating the narrative that the federal government only takes care of areas where white folk live’.
You see his comments solely as about blacks when it seems he’s more speaking of the poor and the disenfranchised.

“The federal response after Katrina was similar to the response we saw after the riots in LA,” he thunders from the podium. “People in Washington, they wake up, they’re surprised: ‘There’s poverty in our midst! Folks are frustrated! Black people angry!’ Then there’s gonna be some panels, and hearings, and there are commissions and there are reports, and then there’s some aid money, although we don’t always know where it’s going — it can’t seem to get to the people who need it — and nothin’ really changes, except the news coverage quiets down and Anderson Cooper is on to something else.”

“Down in New Orleans, where they still have not rebuilt twenty months later,” he begins, “there’s a law, federal law — when you get reconstruction money from the federal government — called the Stafford Act. And basically it says, when you get federal money, you gotta give a ten percent match. The local government’s gotta come up with ten percent. Every ten dollars the federal government comes up with, local government’s gotta give a dollar.”

Nothing to see here.

Then why are you trying so hard to divert attention to it?

Ha.
Not at all. By all means spend lots and lots and lots of time on this.
Tell everyone about it…print up flyers.
This is all getting lots and lots of attention.
What you fail to see is how that’s not exactly a good thing for Romney.
Everyone knows how in 2008 this line of attack worked so well failed miserably.
Plenty of folks on your side of the fence would like to see this stuff get a lot less attention.
But don’t you listen to any of them, now.

Flora Duh on October 3, 2012 at 2:51 PM

Obama sounds like some Gichi out of the Georgia swamps. He’s not the only Democrat to try this “talk down” technique-Al Gore, both Clintons, and, recently Biden have all utilized this technique. But Obama’s approach involves DOUBLE racism-overt racism towards whites that he disparages and covert racism towards blacks he talks down to.

MaiDee on October 3, 2012 at 2:51 PM

verbaluce on October 3, 2012 at 2:17 PM

The Audience was Black. Good grief, can’t you read either?

“President Obama’s 2007 speech before a majority black audience in Virginia…” In addition to that fact, why would he use a fake black accent to an audience that wasn’t black? He wasn’t speaking about the poor or disenfranchised, He was speaking TO an audience; i.e. people were there!!

Even Politico’s mainstream media water-carrier Dylan Byers had to admit this is the case:

But the full footage of the speech included previously unreported remarks in which Sen. Obama suggested that the federal government helped victims of 9/11 and Hurricane Andrew (in Florida), but did not help the victims of Hurricane Katrina because it didn’t care about them as much.

On May 25, 2007, just weeks before the speech, the Bush administration sent an additional $6.9 billion to Katrina-affected areas with no strings attached.

Note the word BEFORE in that last sentence.

In regards to his comments on Katrina — just as we did following the tragic 9/11 attacks, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the American people responded with billions in tax dollars and private charity to help rebuild New Orleans, Louisiana and Mississippi because we are one family and we care for our fellow citizens.”

Just listened to Obama’s rant from the video addressing the Stafford Act, and I noticed something I didn’t notice the first time: When he mentioned the 9/11 attacks, the crowd actually cheered and applauded, almost as if they approved of the attacks. It was quite disturbing.

By the way, did you all know Obama voted AGAINST the Stafford Act? I didn’t until a few minutes ago.

xblade on October 3, 2012 at 6:29 PM

Why are videos like this never available on Youtube so I can embed the video on some of the web sites I visit?

celt on October 3, 2012 at 6:35 PM

So, why wasn’t this video… not REPORTING ON IT… but the VIDEO ITSELF shown in the 2008 election cycle? There is an extreme difference between reporting on a speech, especially via a ‘prepared remarks’ transcript and the actual, real live speech with video.

For all those who pooh-pooh this video, when was the FIRST TIME you’ve seen it? Not the edited version but the FULL VERSION.

And from the video we can now say that there is one set of roads and bridges that Obama doesn’t want to build: in the suburbs.

You know where those other people live. Not his people, but those other people.

This would have tended to undermine the whole ‘I don’t see a red america or blue america’ jazz. Can’t have that during an election, now, can we?

Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2012/10/03/obama-insisted-on-state-local-stafford-act-funding-after-joplin-mo-tornado/#ixzz28HG4qW00

Despite his harsh criticism of the George W. Bush administration’s handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2007, President Obama decided not to waive a requirement that state and local governments contribute 25 percent of relief funds devoted to cleaning up after a tornado that swept through Joplin, Mo. in May 2011.

Eric Bolling CLOBBERS Obama On His Stafford Act Demagoguery

http://thehayride.com/2012/10/eric-bolling-clobbers-obama-on-his-stafford-act-demagoguery/

Well, turns out that just 10 days prior to Obama’s speech there was a vote in the Senate on HR 2206, the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans’ Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act of 2007.

That House Resolution amounted to a $6.9 billion appropriation to the Gulf Coast which would waive the Stafford Act.

And guess which way Obama voted?
