Video: Tucker Carlson presses his case on 2007 Obama speech

posted at 10:01 am on October 3, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The morning after the big reveal on last night’s Hannity, The Daily Caller’s Tucker Carlson appeared on Fox and Friends to press his case that the media deliberately underplayed Barack Obama’s June 2007 speech to Hampton University.  Carlson tells Steve Doocy that the media covered the speech — including himself — but limited their reporting to the prepared remarks.  Had they played the actual tape, especially when Obama talked about New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina, the 2008 Democratic primary may have looked a lot different:

Daily Caller editor-in-chief Tucker Carlson said on Fox and Friends this morning that the “very revealing” clip is an example of Obama using racially-charged rhetoric.

The speech, given at Hampton University, also shows Obama shouting out Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who was in the audience. He tells the crowd, “The people down in New Orleans they don’t care about as much!”

Carlson explained that in his view, “Obama is telling a majority-black audience that the federal government doesn’t like them because they’re black. He is whipping up fear, and paranoia, and hatred.”

Actually, I think the larger point here isn’t that Obama pandered to black audiences. Every Democrat on the national stage does that.  Hillary Clinton adopted what we could gracefully call a “Southern patois” in similar circumstances at that time that doesn’t emerge under any other circumstances. John Edwards’ Carolina drawl grew stronger in those appearances, too. Joe Biden did the same a few weeks ago in order to feed the same kind of racial demagoguery with his “They gonna put y’all back in chains” comment to a predominantly black audience in Virginia.  Anger and demagoguery along racial lines are not an exclusive province of Obama, not then and certainly not now.

The larger point here is that the media has a double standard on race, and a double standard for Republicans.  They like to talk about “dog whistles” among conservatives that — last time I checked — includes the words “Chicago” and “basketball.”  When a Democrat of any background gets up and flat-out tells a predominantly black audience that the federal government likes the “suburbs” better than “our neighborhoods,” it doesn’t even get so much as a dog-biscuit mention by the media.  When Tucker calls the original coverage “a subversion of what journalism’s supposed to be,” he’s absolutely right.

Will this video change minds about this election?  I doubt it.  Partisans have already chosen sides, and the undecideds and low-information voters will care more about the economy and perhaps the cover-up in Libya.  This, however, serves as a good data point about media biases and double standards.

It wasn’t a mistake to show the video.
It was a mistake to call it a bombshell I think.

Obama/media want to hide his angry, thuggish, race baiting side.
They want everyone to see his big plastic smile, and his calm friendly demeanor.

Any time the real Obama can be exposed–the angry face, the flailing arms, the yelling, the fake accent, and the vindictive demeanor—that is bad for the fraud in the WH.

What’s interesting about it is that both he and Romney (with his 47% remark) are talking about the same guy, more or less.

The Jesse Jackson’s of the world.
The Al Sharpton’s of the the world.
All have been successfully pandering to the black community for decades.

And now Tucker is shocked … shocked … that Barack Obama would mimic that which has proven to be successful. Tucker even says its “very telling”.

“Telling” to who? Who is being told something that they didn’t already know?

The black community, obviously, love to be pandered to. They reward those that do so. On the order of voting 95% in lock-step for further pandering?

The white community has watched this pandering from afar for decades. What are they being told that they haven’t known and seen?

Note to Tucker: To these ears, the black dialect attempt is so bad it is hardly discernible.

Apparently Obama wasn’t the only one who thought the federal government screwed up regarding the “people” ( not “blacks” as you suggest) of New Orleans

” Mr. Bush ordered an immediate review of emergency plans for all cities, and said there was a need for greater federal authority and a broader role for armed forces in certain emergencies. He called for a federal government assessment of his administration’s response to the storm and said that he would work with both parties in Congress in an investigation of what went wrong.

“This government will learn the lessons of Hurricane Katrina,” Mr. Bush said.”

I don’t agree with your conclusion. I would add that if they were both talking about the same “guy”, Obama “caring” about that guy by having the government take care of him is exactly what Romney was saying with his 47% statement (which I understand as not being worried about the way they will vote). Romney wants that guy to be able to take care of himself, Obama wants that guy to vote for never ending entitlements.

Nope, romney was talking about the moochers and the welfare queens from the urban areas, to whom mooching is a matter of pride and something to be passed from generation to generation, as a badge of honor :), along with the obamaphones (or phoneys :)…Obama was talkingabout a bunch of self-sufficient, law-abiding, tax paying individuals who like their guns and independence and who are not big lovers of govt or in need for freebies, which make them immune to the dim bribing, pandering and demagoguery…

jimver on October 3, 2012 at 12:05 PM

What?

I was told that every news outlet is mentioning the speech. Then they say (as CNN did) that “this is not new and not controversial”.

Meantime, MSNBC had a clip where Dear Leader said that the Bush administration “was color blind in its incompetence”. The rest was skipped. To top it off, they asked Al Sharpton to comment. He was angry with the Republicans about it.

Oh, the people who needed help to go to work, behave while there, etc. were not black according to MSNBC, they were war vets coming home from Iraq.

I did not see the above, I just watched the taped speech early this AM.

The whole thing in Hampton, VA made me remember the black mob who jumped two reporters. The Factor was nuts on it for a few weeks. Nothing happened till the pols and the media washed it away.

All I said about the above observations was “What?” – that is how far out of touch the media is.

I’ve been a student of politics since the 60′s. I’ve watched Leftism’s ongoing creep into every aspect of society. You people don’t realize just how deeply entrenched the tentacles of the Left are in virtually every institution we have.

You can’t even mention you’re a Republican in the work place without fear of losing your job. You can’t talk the right-side of politics in a party or group setting without fear of being shunned. Heck, you can’t even put a Republican placard in your yard or a bumper sticker on your car without fear of getting vandalized. You KNOW what I’m saying is true.

Frankly, I refuse to delude myself any longer. Instead, I prefer to make preparations for an inevitability. It’s all about survival.

nathor on October 3, 2012 at 12:50 PM

I voted for Kerry because he seemed to understand that the middle class existed (it’s give wife who is many times richer than Romney, btw, and I believe there’s a prenup) and because Bush was a failure as a war president.

urban elitist on October 3, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Schad, my friend. You’ve confused mindless ranting with “explaining.”

urban elitist on October 3, 2012 at 12:42 PM

No, I haven’t.

Yes, you are my friend. I like a good give/take and to watch how mind-boglingly obtuse some otherwise gifted people can be. I keep hope alive for you, especially since I detest the right often more than the left, from the angle of how stupid they can be too. They just gore diffrent oxen.

Just don’t you think for a fraction of a second that I’ll ever become a socialist/communist. I just detest the corruption and hypocrisy of both camps. I do know which side will catapult the land into the abyss and which one will keep it going for a time.

We know Obama is that same guy from the video. For the first time though, some in the media saw a very different Obama. Why would the tape be altered if it wasn’t harmful to Obama’s post-racial image? Some of the smart ones have to be questioning themselves. Do they really want to keep carrying the water for this guy?

You guys still talking about this big bowl of nothing? All political websites overhype trivia in hopes of driving traffic, but the ratio of Hot Air to substance in this case was stratospherically high.

See you tonight, where I’ll be waiting with the rest of you to hear Romney once again awkwardly admit how rich he is and how little he understands the middle class.

urban elitist on October 3, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Yeah, we will file this with the other big bowls of Nothing.
You know…..

…Solyndra…Fast and Furious…..Libya….

So yes, I will tune in tonight to hear the President
once again AWKWARDLY deny he has anything to do with
these Mega Scandals that would bring down any
previous President….

Key words “seemed to”. He, like Obama, doesn’t give a damn about anyone. Occasionally Mrs. Heinz forgets the keys of the dog house she keeps him in, and then he spews inanities.

Yes, I’m more surprised by the level of annoyance than by the video itself. Tells me we should press on with it. When you’re taking flak, you now you’re close to the target.

The perception of Øbama‘s authenticity is at stake, and after almost 4 years of policy failures, he’s much more vulnerable than before.

Even before the Daily Caller released the video last night of President Obama’s 2007 speech before a majority black audience in Virginia, our corrupt media was already declaring it “old news.”

Top Ten Reasons the 2007 Obama Video Matters in 2012
by John Nolte of Breitbart.

#11: 11. We know it’s news because the corrupt media is telling us there’s nothing to see here even as they kill themselves to blow it back on Romney and ensure as few people as possible see it.

I wish Nolte would have trackbacked this to HA would be my only suggestion.

Don’t begrudge your fellow concerned citizens some much deserved entertainment.
This ‘video alert!!!!’ was a huge fail.
Lots of folks on the right are picking themselves up off the floor on this one.
Hannity, Drudge. and Carlson look ridiculous – and desperate.
There’s more than ‘trolls’ pointing out that fact here – and elsewhere.
I think Romney still has a shot here – but this does not help.
