Romney wins; Update: CBS insta-poll shows decisive Romney victory; Update: Romney crushes Obama in CNN insta-poll

posted at 10:44 pm on October 3, 2012 by Allahpundit

I said in the open thread that the media would strain to spin this as an Obama victory, but I assumed that he’d give them something, however small, to work with. He gave them nothing. The Hill’s post-debate headline is “Romney lands punches against subdued Obama in first debate,” but that doesn’t remotely capture it. How bad was it for Team O? Dude:

More reaction from Twitter below. A rare moment of bipartisan consensus for America:

And the coup de grace of an unspinnably terrible night for the left:

Lisa Schiffren of NRO calls Romney’s performance “stellar” and Bill Kristol thinks it might be an inflection point. Next week’s polls should be awfully interesting. Back with more reaction links and some vid when I find a good clip.

Update: Endgame:

Update: A forlorn Bill Maher concedes Romney’s debate win while Kristol follows up by calling it the best performance by a Republican in more than 20 years. Mark Halperin calls it for Romney too, albeit not without a ridiculous bit of grade inflation for O.

Update: Via BuzzFeed, what’s the opposite of a leg tingle?

Update: You don’t need a poll to tell you who won this one, but this is gratifying:

Rachel Maddow claims there was no winner in this debate, which, when you adjust for the curve that MSNBC’s grading Obama on, confirms that this was an utter landslide for the GOP. Back to the drawing board for Team Hopenchange, says Chuck Todd.

Update: Andrew Sullivan, one of The One’s biggest fans, despairs:

Look: you know how much I love the guy, and you know how much of a high information viewer I am, and I can see the logic of some of Obama’s meandering, weak, professorial arguments. But this was a disaster for the president for the key people he needs to reach, and his effete, wonkish lectures may have jolted a lot of independents into giving Romney a second look…

The person with authority on that stage was Romney – offered it by one of the lamest moderators ever, and seized with relish. This was Romney the salesman. And my gut tells me he sold a few voters on a change tonight. It’s beyond depressing. But it’s true.

Update: I knew O did badly, but I didn’t realize he did this badly. No wonder the CNN numbers look like this:

I hear that Frank Luntz’s focus group on Fox was also overwhelmingly pro-Romney but I haven’t seen vid yet. Please e-mail the link if you spot it online.

Update: More hints of a potential gamechanger:

Update: According to Dave Weigel, Romney’s 67 percent in the CNN insta-poll is the highest number they’ve ever recorded after a debate.

Update: Politico’s postgame piece captures the mood: “Massacre! Massacre!”

Romney’s aides and surrogates sprinted into the spin room to offer effusive assessments of their candidate’s performance, and Fox News contributor Juan Williams was caroling “Massacre! Massacre!” to himself as he bounded out of the men’s restroom. Obama’s team didn’t meet the press for a full 10 minutes — and one top Democrat, asked to say the best thing about the president’s performance, said Obama has been “just working to maintain cool and be reassuring” in an email to POLITICO.

This reminds me of Sarah Palin after the ’08 Republican Convention. Sarah rocked the house at the convention, but then she disappeared to Media Prep Island. By the time she got done getting poked and prodded by the political professionals, Katie Couric wiped up the floor with her.

I imagine Obama supporters are feeling the same way this morning that we all did back then. We knew Sarah Palin was better than that, but for some reason she just couldn’t produce. Of course, we were kidding ourselves. Well, Obama supporters are kidding themselves today.

Oh, and BTW… Sarah Palin’s plastic surgeon should be thrown in prison for a thousand years. I may not like Hillary Clinton much, but she is showing us all how a real woman approaches age. Sarah Palin was a great natural beauty, and could have aged gracefully and beautifully, but instead she had to go under the knife. Such a shame… Like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa…

One thing that I noticed is that Obama must have been strongly coached not to pretend that he is running against W. I think that he had nothing much to say without being able to blame everything on the “mess that he inherited.” It has become his only excuse and I’m certain that his campaign has figured out that the public has become sick and tired of hearing it. People want to see improvement and we all want someone who can bring it about in 2013. Without his favorite crutch he was flailing about like a cripple because he has no plan or ideas and he can’t defend a record of pitifully low growth that is progressively worse each of the last 3 years of his administration.

Obvious Observation: For the first time in his LIFE obama was exposed for what he is…a FRAUD. He has NEVER been challenged!
It will NOT get better…he will not be able to cram a lifetime of learning and GROWING/MATURING into a few weeks prep.
Sad…sorta…at 0 he is final having to look in the mirror and realize the joke he is. BUT HE WON”T…I AM barack obama, i am wonderful…and down he will go!!!

Romney did very well here. And he did well while being largely substansive
- not via ‘zingers’ etc.
Haven’t spoken to my Dad yet (a true undecided), but I’m bettin’ he’s leaning Romney today.
As much as I would have prefered a different outcome, I welcome the focus on real issues…and reality.

verbaluce on October 4, 2012 at 7:12 AM

Thanks for posting this. Not easy for you on a day like today.
Folks here will be having a pretty good time today. That is what winning is all about.
I am concerned about the next debate, though. Romney just set a pretty high bar, performance wise and in the next debate anything less will get savaged by the press. Difficult for Obama to have a worse performance. He was clearly distracted by something.
Romney needs to keep his focus and not get swallowed up by the sucess of one debate.
Let us know what your dad says.

I have a theory about the palpable level of anger the left is demonstrating over Obama’s performance. I honestly think they’ve seen and known for a long time that this guy is out of his league. I’m sure the latest revelations with F and F and the Genghazi attack just has them slapping their foreheads.

They’re looking for the reason they can point to and say, here’s where I lost my faith in the guy and decided to (stay home, vote for Mitt, whatever). It helps them not feel like the racists they claim we are.

If the MFM had done their job, putting out full videos of Obama during the 2007-08 campaign season, then he wouldn’t have been this bad… if Obama could suck it up and actually put forward what he said to a wider audience. Not holding his feet to the fire, not toughening him up, left Obama defenseless last night. And the Nation in peril from such poorly thought out policies.

Last night both were on display for all to see as Romney conducted a study session on the differences between government of good feeling and government that actually must work within its means.

The failure of the MFM is distilled in Barack Obama.

One debate does not make an election won. This focus group loved Romney’s performance tonight and didn’t care much for how Obama handled himself. But before you assume this is a Republican group, Luntz said that 13 out of 24 people in the group voted for Obama in 2008. And all but 3 said Romney won big tonight.

Well that could be a problem for him. All Romney has to do is ask him how come he allowed Valerie Jarrett to call off the first 2 missions to take OBL out. Google “White House Insider” and read about that, and this fact was confirmed in Woodward’s recent book release. They had to go drag Obama’s ass off the golf course to watch the mission in the special room when it finally was underway. Apparently the SECDEF and Director of the CIA went ahead with the mission and THEN notified the White House, on the 3rd attempt.

FlaMurph on October 4, 2012 at 8:28 AM

What the debate did was two things.

1)It firmly established Mitt as qualified presidential material and not the guy in the public image the leftist media created.

2) It established Obama as a man, not a messiah, who doesn’t have a grasp on what a president should have a grasp on. The cult needs a god-figure–not a vulnerable man.

Therefore, when Biden gets roasted by Ryan, the above will be reaffirmed twofold.

Three questions:

1)Will, as in 2008,sophisticated liberal white people still wish to be associated with an embarrassing flawed man, black and feel-good PC or otherwise?

2)Will the black community rush out to help Obama when he is such a transparent failure, or will they stay home in ever larger numbers as the Romney momentum increases?

3)Will the thoroughly discredited media, sensing defeat, continue to destroy all their remaining credibility as we near the finish line, or will they head for the lifeboats?

chuck todd: romney wins first one, challenger always does. potus not prepared. in the bubble. blah blah. right. obama has been RUNNING, he’s been doing nothing BUT campaigning for 14 months. and one could argue for 4 years. they’re hanging onto that that. the last straw of optimism. obama’s gonna bounce back next time, you watch, like all encumbants do. problem is the other encumbants actually WERE working during the debates, actually WERE being potus, not play acting. when he gets trashed in the next one, they’ll presumably have to face a sliver of reality. thats going to be the fun one. the final one, the “post analysis” may be a real full blown burial of O. like the economy the last 4 years.

t8stlikchkn on October 4, 2012 at 8:32 AM

1 – yes
2 – stay home, he’ll get only 89% of an 11% black vote
3 – lifeboats, too late

t8stlikchkn on October 4, 2012 at 8:34 AM

There is no question that the hoax perpetrated upon the American people known as “King Barack” has been stripped to his bare essentials, and there’s nothing there.

The empty chair and suit have been totally exposed for the fraud that he is. May those who voted for this charlatan clear the fog from their heads.

The wake up call has been sounded.

electricfunksandwich on October 4, 2012 at 8:35 AM

Obama wanted to remain cool and be reassuring…He reassured people all right that he is a disaster…………

It’s something my Daddy used to say. The mule opens his mouth and grins because he’s trying to get the yellow jackets out. Oh…never mind. :)

kingsjester on October 4, 2012 at 8:37 AM

halperin states the obvious to idiots who have no idea what reality uis: obama has difficulty explaining his policies because they’ve been so disatrous and he has trouble explaining his vision of the future because its so vague (i.e. he has none, except maybe more socialism?). gee, ya think? and to think NO-BOD-DEE on the panel KNEW that. til you just said it. amazing.

t8stlikchkn on October 4, 2012 at 8:39 AM

Pathetic

It was like watching Chris Matthews on Jeopardy . . . . . . .

IlikedAUH2O on October 4, 2012 at 7:56 AM

.
Wasn’t THAT a hoot ? He looked (and sounded) like he didn’t “belong” on that panel. Totally out-classed.

Maybe he should have been on “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader”.

The Libs will be sputtering all day. This is gonna be fun.

Get a grip, Man. Sarah has not gone under the knife. Her hair is a different style and the only difference I can see is that her lipstick is a darker color. I prefer the lighther on her, but I don’t give her style advice. I loved her pink jacket!

Stop making stuff up.

BetseyRoss on October 4, 2012 at 8:43 AM

Professorial my Aunt Fanny! He lost and he knew it. Mitt was so hot, the creases in the empty chair’s pants wilted.

Kissmygrits on October 4, 2012 at 8:43 AM

Good point Karen

That would be an insult to the fifth graders!!

dddave on October 4, 2012 at 8:49 AM

Best line of the night, when Mitt told the empty chair that he was only good at picking losers. He even made jug ears laugh a little.

Kissmygrits on October 4, 2012 at 8:50 AM

Hahhaha…. The spin on reasons why Obama lost are so counterbalanced that the media is exposing itself in attempt to curb the damage. Regardless, its hard to spin this as less than a disaster.

Two fun points.
Mika asked if the debate was a bigger disaster than the republican convention. No one but, but since when was the republican debate a disaster?

The facebook posters on my page that are in the tank have only one thing to say in Obama’s defense. “What’s with Romneys swarmy smirk.” Obviously this loss hurt.

Bensonofben on October 4, 2012 at 8:52 AM

t8stlikchkn- spot on..
And then MSNBC went to break to smack him back in line.

Bensonofben on October 4, 2012 at 8:53 AM

Took a quick trip to Huffington and noted that even they say Romney won, but then claim he cheated by denying all the positions he has been running on.

spudmom on October 4, 2012 at 8:59 AM

One of the best excuses I heard was that Obama got there too late, and hadn’t acclimated to the altitude in Denver. So he couldn’t breathe, and therefore did poorly.

They’re also claiming Romney lied about everything, i.e. his tax plan, but they’re still basing that on the disputed TPC study. Another good one–they say the claim that Obama has created 5 million jobs in 30 months is “true” but BLS only shows 4 million…

My Facebook feed just has a lot of people posting Big Bird crap. Whatever…

Buckeyes can take pride in the effort and the outcome. I’m hoping that some of my fellow Buckeyes realized that the emperor has no clothes.

BuckeyeSam on October 4, 2012 at 8:14 AM

I’m always proud of my state, and most of it’s people. I kinda wonder what’s in the water in the pockets of blue to cause mass delusion.. but.. My mother in law’s one of those die hard democrats who vote that way, cause daddy did.. and republicans are all evil rich guys that hate you and boil children..

except me of course.. she makes that exception.. but getting her to look beyond the propaganda is next to impossible.

Our unionista’s are the same way.

I still believe Mitt will win Ohio.. when it really counts, the Buckeyes will stand up straight.

mark81150 on October 4, 2012 at 9:07 AM

Thanks for posting this. Not easy for you on a day like today.
Folks here will be having a pretty good time today. That is what winning is all about.
I am concerned about the next debate, though. Romney just set a pretty high bar, performance wise and in the next debate anything less will get savaged by the press. Difficult for Obama to have a worse performance. He was clearly distracted by something.
Romney needs to keep his focus and not get swallowed up by the sucess of one debate.
Let us know what your dad says.

Jabberwock on October 4, 2012 at 7:49 AM

(Posted this to the newer debate thread)
I have yet to dig into the pro-Obama spin here, but I imagine it’ll fall somewhere along the lines that ‘this is just the first debate’. And fair enough – it is.
But he lost that one.
I suppose the one advantage he may have coming out of this is that he now has a sense of how Romney is going play this for the next 5 weeks. I think it’s fair to say that it’s a different strategy then he was trying previously. It’s the new ‘severely moderate’, Mitt. I’m sure his campaign now realizes all the right wingers he had to kowtow to are with him now no matter what. Same as Obama was able to move center in the later stages of his campaign.
So now the debate becomes focused…if somewhat narrow.
I still think Mitt was over-prepped (seemed quite hyper) – but that still worked well for him with an Obama that seemed to have been cautioned about coming off as smug. He seemed a bit cautious overall when it came to parrying…muted a bit.

My Dad says he likes Romney a lot more now. But “I’m not 100% yet”…
