Poll: Most voters are unfamiliar with Solyndra

posted at 7:11 pm on October 3, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Not that it’s even remotely a surprise that our many low-information voters aren’t familiar with the federally-backed and subsequently failed solar-panel manufacturer and that they don’t tend to keep up with the minutiae of such sagas of epic government failure, but Solyndra is just so thoroughly representative of the utter hubris of the federal government picking economic winners and losers and presuming to know what’s good for us, that the actual numbers are like a dagger straight to my heart. From The Hill:

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows that 58 percent of registered voters are unaware or unsure of the company, which went bankrupt in 2011 after receiving an Energy Department loan guarantee in 2009 to manufacture advanced solar panels.

Twenty-five percent of respondents had a negative view of Solyndra, 15 percent were neutral and just 2 percent held a positive view on the subect, according to the survey conducted in late September. …

The company’s collapse in late August of 2011, which put more than 1,000 people out of work, was an embarrassment for the White House. Obama had personally visited Solyndra in 2010 to cast it as an example of the emerging green economy.

Notice that of the respondents who did say they were aware of Solyndra’s story, pretty much nobody claimed to have a positive view of the affair. It can be tough to break off from the herd when our everyday lives are so roundly and subliminally infiltrated with “green-is-always-and-necessarily-good” vibes from so many sources (which is exactly what the Obama administration is preying upon, by the way), but I can’t help feeling that if more voters were aware of, maybe not even Solyndra specifically, but of more of the consequences of the Obama administration’s generally blasé attitude towards our tax dollars, all these presidential polls wouldn’t be quite so dang close.

If we are going to have stupid “stimulus” programs wouldn’t it have been smarter (relative term) to just give every citizen a million dollars? It would have been cheaper and actually produced more “stimulus”.

That would have been me probably when I was 19.

It wasn’t until I started reading the alt media after 9/11 that I was exposed to an opposite, credible view.

But it’s the GOP’s job to educate people. Obama certainly has been doing it–on The View! He gets it.

And that the American people could be so woefully uniformed about something like Solyndra, and where their tax dollars were utterly and apologetically wasted, is a massive indictment of the lack of journalistic integrity of the main stream media.

Their mandate is to inform. Who, What, When, Where, and Why. They have failed in that mandate and should be fired, from executive offices down to those who’s job it is to write the reports or copy, those who read the copy on air, and replaced with those who understand the meaning of the terms ‘objectivity’ and ‘journalistic integrity’.

If they wish to be no more than op-ed publications or on air entities, they should say so and stay out of news and reporting altogether.

Deanna on October 3, 2012 at 7:26 PM

How on earth would anyone know what Solyndra is? Has anyone in the press ever typed the word on their website or uttered the word live on the news?

The Press/Obama campaign strategy is simple and effective: everyone who watches Fox is already voting for Romney…no one else will hear a single word about the myriad failures of the Obama farce/administration. Not one word.

This is how propaganda works, and we have a monolithic media which is nearly 100% in unison about effecting this program.

Jaibones on October 3, 2012 at 7:26 PM

I once saw a young man conduct a poll on a busy street in NYC. He asked people a few questions, all relevant to either U.S. history or the way in which our government is set up and functions.

One of the questions he asked… now get this… was “Where did the Boston Tea Party take place?”

I couldn’t believe it as person after person GOT IT WRONG.

These people, I remind you gentle friends, are allowed to vote.

But seriously, this just proves that Mitt can’t say, “What about Solyndra” and expect undecided voters to know what he is talking about. The good news is that the more he explains Solyndra, the worse it makes the Obama administration look.

The average American non-information/political junky doesn’t know that the Fifth Column Treasonous Media has been deceiving them they are to damned busy trying to pay their mortgages, feed their families and keep up with their kids social lives.

Their priorities aren’t messed up, they know what is important, it you guys who live breath and dream politics and information who are screwed up.

The majority of American citizens are good decent hard working honest people, people who made the understandable mistake of trusting the Fifth Column Treasonous Media to keep them informed in an honest accurate manner.

If you want to blame anyone, pull your heads out of your asses and recognize who it was that made the intentional decision to deceive your fellow citizens.

Most importantly keep this in mind, if you know anyone who the Fifth Column Treasonous Media has deceived, ask yourself why the hell haven’t you taken the time to correct that situation. You are as much to blame as the damned Fifth Column Treasonous Media if you haven’t informed those around you.

It will be interesting to see which of President Obama’s catastrophic failures in foreign policy will be featured at the next debate. Obviously, the Middle East will be prominent, but I’d be surprised if it ends there. How many undecided voters have heard about Obama’s “live microphone” comment to Putin?

ClintACK on October 4, 2012 at 2:06 AM

This is one of the few subjects Romney didn’t handle as well as he could have. He mentioned Solyndra but didn’t connect the dots for people — he assumed people already knew of the scandal.

Next time he needs to spell it out more clearly — explain succinctly how this was an unviable company, given taxpayer dollars for reasons of political connections, in which the administration overruled the assessments of the financial analysts, and the company went down and took taxpayer $ with them. People need to have the dots filled in.
