Why did the US send Ambassador Chris Stevens into Benghazi at all, let alone so publicly, with such a minimal security force to defend him and the diplomatic mission?

THAT is the question the media needs to focus on next. WHY was the Ambassador there especially on that day. I suspect it is the reason for the cover-up.

Am I wrong to assume that one of the reasons you do not have a large security detail is because you do not want to draw attention to your activity? Did the administration have him on a covert mission they want to keep secret? Or did Stevens lack security because the Obama administration is naive and incompetent?

– US military had planned some covert operation in N. Africa ( perhaps Libya). Purpose? Open for speculation.

– AQ intel became aware that something was in the works, and developed a plan to strike first to discourage/demoralize.

– Some on the US side became aware of AQ intention to strike, and requested backup in Benghazi. But others were unconvinced. Classic US intelligence achilles heel – their own certainty and arrogance.

– Benghazi attack happens, and ambassador killed. Mission accomplished for AQ.

– Administration now caught between rock (lack of security) and hard place (covert mission escalation of war in Africa).

– US Intel probably cooked up the story about a protest demostration gone out of control. Trying to cover their butt for not taking warnings seriously. Probably based on a modacum of truth in that there was a protest around the time of the attack.

– Admin decides to go with the Intel story on the demonstration. Once they commit to this path, all else is just the wicked web that comes from choosing a lie, and making other lies to support the first one.

How do they get out of it?

I submit that a large part of the public will go along with their story as it becomes more complex simply because it becomes TOO complex for them to follow and make the connections to believe they have been lied to. And besides, “not that many people died – it would have been much worse if a war-monger were in charge”. That line of thinking.

Meanwhile, the world becomes an even hotter potato.

I’ve been blaming them since 9/12. I’m 90% certain the government was aware of this specific danger, not within 24 hours, but before 9/11 and yet blew it off, or because of the normal fubar of this Administration, shrugged their collective ‘not my pay scale’ shoulders.

I’m 25% certain Stevens knew of the danger, via the Cairo Embassy and/or Anne Patterson, herself.

There’s more than enough blame to go around, you Constitution clinging, free speech patriot, you.

Actually, I think this is just another example of the children that permeate the current White House. They campaign. That’s all they know how to do. And now they seem especially worried about the prospects for a job come January. I wonder if someone stuck a wedge in the revolving door at the Center for American Progress…

The White House and State Department were asleep at the switch before the 9/11 anniversary attack, and they’ve been lying ever since about the circumstances behind it, too.

Time for a laser-beam focus on the economy–squirrel!

That last refuge of a scoundrel comment was stupid. His job is not to get killed. His job is to not cause an international incident. As ambassador, there is absolutely job requirement for Stevens to make that trip. We have telephone technology, you know.

“In addition, multiple U.S. federal government officials have confirmed to the Committee that, prior to the September 11 attack, the U.S. mission in Libya made repeated requests for increased security in Benghazi,” Issa and Chaffetz added (my emphasis). “The mission in Libya, however, was denied these resources by officials in Washington.”

The committee noted 13 “security threats” in Benghazi, including an attempt to assassinate the British ambassador to Libya.

Considering the advice and warnings Stevens received in the run up to his trip to Benghazi, he was a fool, too. Five other Americans were killed and many injured because he ignored reality and the warnings in his own personal journal.

Did he ask for it and was turned down? In that case he could have refused to serve there. I know he was a career diplomat and thought he knew the people and the area, but he was no fool. Why didn’t he do something to protect himself and his staff?
