Hillary to Issa: You should reserve judgment about Benghazi until … November; Update: Feds received “about a dozen” intel reports pointing to terrorism within hours of attack

posted at 9:42 pm on October 2, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Powerline, I think this is her version of a compromise. Deep down, she’d prefer that he held off until November 2016.

Clinton said that the State Department’s Accountability Review Board will begin work this week and the letter revealed the names of all five board members. In addition to former Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Pickering, who will lead the board, the other members will be former Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen (ret.), Catherine Bertini, Hugh Turner, and Richard Shinnick.

Clinton asked Issa to withhold any final conclusions about the Benghazi attack until the review board finishes its work and reports to Congress, which could come as early as November or as late as early next year. She pledged to work with Issa’s committee and asked him to submit any requests for information or witnesses at hearings to the State Department’s Office of Legislative Affairs.

How’s the Accountability Review Board going to get to the bottom of what happened when the FBI still can’t get access to the crime scene? The news tonight from Reuters is that the State Department’s still negotiating with the Libyan government to get people in there, nearly three weeks after the attack. Even the locals can’t quite believe the foot-dragging:

Three weeks after the attack that killed four Americans in this city, the investigation of its causes remains in its initial stages, with just a handful of suspects detained, the crime scenes minimally secured and Walid Faraj waiting for a phone call from someone, anyone, asking him what he saw on the night he was injured while protecting the U.S. mission…

“Since that day, nobody has called, nobody cared,” said Faraj, 28, who lost a tooth in the attack and whose legs are peppered with small wounds from the firefight. “How is it the Americans didn’t anticipate anything?”

Witnesses are scattered across Benghazi, a port town where the uprising that toppled Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi began. But many witnesses say they haven’t heard from investigators.

The Washington Post is on the scene but Hillary Clinton’s crack investigative team is nowhere to be found. Between this and her letter to Issa, I’m wondering if the White House has finally transitioned from trying to cover up what happened with “spontaneous protest” nonsense to simply stonewalling the investigation until the election is safely past.

ABC has something new out tonight about Stevens warning a retired military officer in late August, just a few weeks before his death, not to travel to Libya because it was too dangerous with so many militias still running around. That’s the backdrop for the light security footprint that State imposed on him.

Update: Take three minutes to watch this important Fox News vid revealing how State did nothing — actually, less than nothing — when the Libyan contractors hired to protect the consulate complained to their British parent company that security at the building was substandard. State refused to intervene, and then, when an American firm was hired to provide additional security, State … shut it down. T-minus eight days and counting until those House hearings.

Update: Cover up.

Within hours of last month’s attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya, President Barack Obama’s administration received about a dozen intelligence reports suggesting militants connected to al Qaeda were involved, three government sources said…

The stream of intelligence flowing into Washington within hours of the Benghazi attacks contained data from communications intercepts and U.S. informants, which were then fashioned into polished initial assessments for policymakers.

Officials familiar with them said they contained evidence that members of a militant faction, Ansar al-Sharia, as well as al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, were involved in the assaults…

One official said initial reporting suggested militants had begun planning attacks on U.S. targets in Benghazi before Sept. 11, but may well have decided to use the protests as a pretext for moving forward that day.

Note well: Even the “initial reporting” pointed to a pre-planned attack with the protest just window dressing exploited by the jihadis. And yet they pushed the “spontaneous” line afterward for days. Question: If U.S. intel had a dozen or so bits of info pointing to terrorism within a few hours of the attack, why did the CIA circulate talking points for legislators pushing the “spontaneous” nonsense? That’s the next blank to be filled in. Exit quotation from Saxby Chambliss: “It seems increasingly clear that the briefings provided to Congress and the public about the Benghazi attack were at best incomplete and at worst misleading.”

After seeing the Univision tape, I think there’s a pattern of sending out diplomats with NO COVER whatsoever! Zapata, for one, now Stevens.

Even the Brits cleared out b/c of the warnings.

What is wrong with these people?

PattyJ on October 2, 2012 at 11:44 PM

We’ll likely never hear the full story.

Cindy Munford on October 2, 2012 at 11:50 PM

The WSJ is reporting that Obama, Hillary, JCS Dempsey and a national security adviser met in the Oval Office and rejected sending our military in to intervene in the attack. They instead decided to ask the Libyan government if they could send help.

This is incompetence in its highest form on display right here folks. They need to get to the bottom of this thing NOW so all the info can be distributed BEFORE November 6th!

The spontaneous angle was great cover for an intelligence/security failure….a massive one at that. If it is convenient and great cover, why the hell not use it, I mean, never let a crisis go to waste, right? It makes sense. They used a spontaneous uprising as a great way to wait out the news cycle for a week or so and “voila’”— What Benghazi thing?? Ahh, move on ! Get over it! you republicans! cheap political points! yada yada…..

Who’s first responsibility is it to secure the safety of our diplomats? The Secretary of State.

Is there a failure of security? Yes, resulting in four deaths.

Whatever she does, is to her benefit and no one else, not even the American people.

The sooner her political career ends, the better.

My pet theory?

Ambassador was supposed to be kidnapped, Obama was going to make a speech where “the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal”, and the Administration would then be able to swap the Blind Sheik for the Ambassador, “resolving the crisis” through “smart power”. This was supposed to demonstrate what a diplomatic powerhouse Obama was for amplification by the lapdog media. Essentially, it’s the skit where the jerk hires a guy to harass his girlfriend in the parking lot so that he can come out, look manly, and “scare” the “attacker” away.

Problems arose when the ruthless killers who had been saying “yes, yes, the ‘fix is in’!” showed a little less “nuance” when actually carrying out the attack. And then people got dead.

They can’t let the FBI (or anyone else) go in for fear the planning notes would turn up, showing collusion between the Administration and the murderers. The weak cover stories reek of fear-sweat because the electorate’s likely reaction to the real story is too horrible to contemplate.

Libya was supposed to be the model for Progressivist military interventions. It was based on “responsibility to protect”, it was “leading from behind”, it didn’t involve “boots on the ground”, and it should have lead to a US-friendly society without a taint of US imperialism. All this was to be showcased in the planned pre-election drama…..and it all now lies in ashes.

cthulhu on October 3, 2012 at 2:08 AM

It’s time for a large, public call for her resignation. I don’t care how close we are to the election, or her prior talk about retiring in November no matter what. She and her kind need to know our tolerance for their failures has run out.

And so I ask again (since no one with a loud voice seems to ask) – where are the 37 (?) wounded and/or healthy staff that were heroically evacuated out of the consulate? Why are they not telling their story? And why is no one asking? Are they well? Are they under some sort of gag order? Are they at liberty or somehow quarantined somewhere?

bofh on October 2, 2012 at 10:28 PM
They are, more than half of them, CIA operatives, currently scattered all over the world. That’s the not so secret dirty little secret of Benghazi. It wasn’t a consulate, it was a spy mission, trying to prevent weapons smuggled in to overthrow Khaddafi from falling into the wrong hands, trying to check al-Qaeda in North Africa.Al-Qaeda kicked their ass out. More here. And they’re not going to talk.

de rigueur on October 2, 2012 at 10:34 PM

Me thinks de rigueur has hit the nail on the head with this comment.
AQ knew this and and saw the consulate as a threat to be eliminated. Our problem was that State was running a CIA operation. NOTHING good would ever come from that combo. State simply does not accept how the CIA works. State talks while CIA walks.
By tossing Khaddafi, we allowed this situation to develope. It was easily foreseeable, but in our haste we did not care. Now we have a terrible, terrible situation in North East Libya. It will get worse.
I expect to see drones and cruise missiles shortly.

The truth of the matter is that State has no intention whatsoever of getting to the bottom of this. They already know. The investigation is a diversion.
US personel were in Libya to clean up a mess WE created by overthrowing Khaddafi without “boots on the ground”. The end result was that AQ was free to orgainize, collect weapons and establish a home base. We created the vaccum and they filled it.
Benghazi consulate activity was our attempt to put toothpaste back in the tube.
Any truthful analysis of this situation would place blame on how we initially prosecuted Khaddafi’s overthrow. This administration will not go there.

Secretary Clinton and President Obama need to be dropped into a consulate in the ME with poor security. And then when they beg for more security we can say, “no, tough it out.” I can see Obama trying to use Clinton as a human shield but Clinton being the stouter of the two will twist Barry’s little chicken arm behind him and get the better of him. They should have to serve in danger under their liberal policies. Thank God we didn’t hurt Libya’s feelings by sending in our own troops.

How dare she ask for Issa to wait until after the electon. This is exactly the stuff that the American people should know about in order to make the right decision. You know in another lifetime I was a Hillary supporter. I’m sorry everybody. I was so wrong. She is filth.

magicbeans on October 3, 2012 at 9:37 AM

The purpose of Obama’s “review boards” always seem to be to provide an excuse to refuse to answer questions – shouldn’t comment until the investigation is over, see. Not only are answers put off (if ever fully given) the top dogs are somehow never fingered as accountable.

With what is known now I don’t see how, if the Stevens family and the family of the slain marines have red blood, these families don’t express outrage publicly.

Why no comments from Libfree or uppereastside or urban elitist? Where are those pathetic little trolls now? Just like fast and furious they have nothing to say. I am sorry, wait until after the election? That’s despicable and insulting to the Americans who were murdered.

They can create campaign commercials and set up election rallies in 48 hours. Yet this will take months. Can they even say that with a straight face as most of the information is published online, various news organizations wander through our embassy and Congress puts together a timeline based on all the information available?

Is Hillary and Mr. Obama waiting for more dead Americans to make this a higher priority?

A lot of people wanted to believe the best of Hillary. But I think any objective look at her should remind us that she’s not a particularly good politician, or particularly smart, or particularly competent.

She is particularly amoral and ruthless, though. She’s been a disastrous Secretary of State, and has never really done anything to deserve the high reputation she has in some quarters.

She’s deeply mired in this fiasco, and trying desperately to keep from getting blamed.

Agree and disagree.

Agree that Libyan government is as complicit in the events as are Hussein and Co. In the 30 minutes between terrorists showed up with heavy guns in front of the consulate and attack commencing, where was Libyan government police/troops protection? That idiotic staged demonstration and supposed attacks on militia/offices was just further proof that Libyan government should be held responsible.

Disagree that we should lose any more USA lives, marines at that. Bomb the place back into stone age and I mean it. Flatten entire cities. This will do a few things: A) Tell Libyan government its not longer funny to pretend they care about American lives, B) kill as many of the attackers as we can (hey, any government building and militia office is a good target for that and I am sure we do have a map with a good number of those places well marked and researched, and C) Send a clear message to all the muslims in Egypt and beyond they are next on the list with just one more fake anti-Mohammed demonstration and attack on ANY USA property or life. Not even graffiti on embassy/consulate walls are acceptable.
