Cartel boss captured with Fast & Furious weapons

posted at 9:21 am on October 2, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

How high up did the weapons of Operation Fast and Furious go in the cartels?  This high:

When Mexican authorities took Juarez drug cartel carnage king Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez — better known as “El Diego” — into custody, he had weapons from Operation Fast and Furious on his person, the English-language transcript of the Spanish-language television network Univision’s special investigation into the scandal shows.

“According to investigations, ‘El Diego’ forms the link between this massacre and Fast and Furious,” an anchor read on air in Spanish Sunday evening, referring to two different mass killings drug cartel operatives used Fast and Furious weapons to conduct as Univision reported.

“When he [El Diego] was captured in Chihuahua in the summer of 2011, he was found with weapons that the American government had allowed to enter Mexico,” the anchor added.

Supposedly, the point of the ATF/DoJ operation was to track the weapons so that they could find the movers and shakers in the Mexican drug cartels.  Imagine what would have happened if the ATF actually had intended totrack the weapons and cooperate with the Mexican government, as the Bush administration did earlier in Operation Wide Receiver.  The partnership might have caught El Diego a little sooner.

And they might have prevented this:

The English-language translated transcript of Spanish-language television news network Univision’s special report on Operation Fast and Furious shows that drug cartel leaders orchestrated a hit on innocent civilian teenagers using weapons they got from President Barack Obama’s administration. …

Davila’s children — 18-year-old Jose Luis Davila and 20-year-old Marco Davila — were next door at a birthday party with about 60 of their friends. “They had bought sodas, chips — the neighbors were going to make oranges with chilies for them, cracklings, everything,” their mother told Univision.

After that gunshot, Luz Davila said she knew something horrible happened to her children.

“I stood because it came to me and I said, ‘Something happened,’” Luz Davila told the network.

What had happened was Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez, or “El Diego,” the onetime leader of the Juarez Cartel’s La Linea, sent his team to the birthday party to kill what he thought were members of the rival Sinaloa Cartel.

Hernandez had ordered his men to block off the street and conduct the massacre under the mistaken notion that some of the attendees were Sinaloa rivals.  That turned out to be false, but more than a dozen hitmen sprayed fire throughout the neighborhood, killing 16 people overall, with guns helpfully supplied by the ATF.  (After his capture, Hernandez acknowledged that the targets were innocent.)

The Univision reporter says at the end that “the United States government has many things that they ought to make public.”  Unfortunately, this administration is still hiding Fast & Furious evidence and witnesses from Congressional investigators via a bogus executive privilege claim.  Perhaps that will change soon …. but perhaps it would be better to get a new executive in place so we can finally get answers as to how the American government armed Juarez cartel hitmen to conduct this massacre, and more importantly, why.

First ALCON, apologies for the profanity. After this comment, I’m going to impose another self-ban-hammer for not less than 48 hours.

Second, the hypocrisy of the left just never fails to astound me. They get on their soapboxes and talk about all the innocent civilians killed during an actual war involving our sons and daughters and tell us there is no excuse. They tell us that the collateral damage is unacceptable. They think it is unacceptable to the point where the rules of engagement are so restricted, our forces cannot reasonably protect themselves in most circumstances. They cried to high heaven that Bush lied and soldiers died, during, wait for it, an actual war where soldiers deploy in the service of their country carrying the honor of knowledge that if they fall, they are defending The American people. But liberals say, this is unacceptable. The mere fact that the Bush Administration put them in harms way is “unacceptable”. News runs every angle 24/7 until the man is destroyed.

I suppose we now clearly see that’s only that mindset if it’s a Republican in the oval Office. Now, you don’t even see a single war protest. You don’t see movies being made like “Fair Game” trying to further damage President Bush with accusations his administration endangered elements of our crime fighting organizations. Isn’t one with Fast and Furious as a theme a good idea, Hollywood, if you’re still trying to beat down the idea that Administrations hurt innocent people through their ineptitude.

No, it’s all peachy now to look at a couple LEOs and quite a few hundred Mexican civilians murdered because of this idiotic Obama Administration scheme as acceptable losses. Now, we’re only upset, “maybe upset” as liberals because of the tranparency? Or were you asking if that what we’re left with to still be upset about?

My God your entire liberal mindset is just sick and twisted.

The dead Mexicans were ALWAYS a part of the plan.

Without a lot of dead Mexicans, especially young Mexicans, killed by American guns, there wouldn’t be a manufactured crisis severe enough to justify their plans to systematically strip away our liberty, and get the People to go along with said plans.

You never want to let a good crisis go to waste.

Don’t have a crisis to exploit in the furtherance of global totalitarianism? Make one up. Bonus points if your fabricated crisis results in dead kids and cops.

The left’s myriad “causes” are just clubs for them to beat Republicans with. They subordinated feminism during the Clinton years, and now it’s the antiwar movement’s turn. This is how the left can promote anti-semitism and snuggle up with radical Islam on one hand, while decrying “racism” on the other.

The only major goal they adhere to without fail is doing whatever they can to hurt American interests and wipe out their domestic opposition. Unfortunately, most Republicans (especially the elected officials) are too dim to realize this and insist on treating left as legitimate political players.

So that weapons sold at American guns shops could be found at Mexican crime scenes, traced to the US, and our 2nd Amendment rights be further restricted.

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on October 2, 2012 at 9:28 AM

There’s no “suddenly” here as far as the Mexican government is concerned. They have been conducting their own investigation for some time. The Mexican people have had numerous rallies and protests about it, too. The Mexican media has been covering it far better than our media. The Mexicans are boiling hot over this, as they should be… they’re not going to let Obama get away with it.

And, no, it’s not pay back for Obama’s broken amnesty promise. The USA government implemented a sick, illegal, unethical, ends justify the means policy that resulted in the deaths of Mexicans and Americans and the Obama administration still won’t even TALK to the Mexicans about it.

Please be sure to let your students know that Think Progress is an acceptable source for facts and that digression is an acceptable tactic when you have no argument.

Why is it Liberals only care about Mexicans when they are here in THIS country illegally, but don’t give a DAMN about them when they are in their homeland? Of course, had there been a Republican in the White House, the media fervor regarding this WOULD have resulted in a few terminations and an impeachment!!!

Snitchmo on October 2, 2012 at 11:36 AM

I guess I don’t follow what you are insinuating. 2 posters made vulgar comments about liberals and I pointed it out as disgusting.

weaselyone on October 2, 2012 at 10:18 AM

Liberals are vulgar and disgusting. The circle is complete.

Midas on October 2, 2012 at 11:47 AM

Who let the illicit guns in? You can’t take your gun into Mexico.

Fleuries on October 2, 2012 at 10:58 AM

You can’t legally take it through the check-points, but criminals don’t usually bother crossing the border at the check-points. It’s wide open, and there are many places to cross (over or under) the border without encountering law enforcement on either side.

AZCoyote on October 2, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Check it out.

Again Ed, there’s no question as to the “why.”

Akzed on October 2, 2012 at 11:50 AM

AZCoyote on October 2, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Maybe Mexico should do as much to secure her northern border as she does her southern border. She may even teach the yanquis how to do it.

cozmo on October 2, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Why is it Liberals only care about Mexicans when they are here in THIS country illegally, but don’t give a DAMN about them when they are in their homeland?

Snitchmo on October 2, 2012 at 11:36 AM

Because the Mexicans living in Mexico are not voting for Democratic candidates in the U.S.

It’s all about controlling the money, and that means getting elected first. They’re willing to lie, cheat, steal, kill . . . whatever it takes.

AZCoyote on October 2, 2012 at 11:55 AM

…but perhaps it would be better to get a new executive in place so we can finally get answers as to how the American government armed Juarez cartel hitmen to conduct this massacre, and more importantly, why.

Good grief; we know why, and so do you, Ed.

What the hell?

Midas on October 2, 2012 at 12:01 PM

Second amendment advocates argue for liberty and safety by allowing gun ownership for law abiding citizens and not for criminals, whereas, gun-control advocates argue for the need to get guns off the streets as a solution to gun violence by restricting access to firearms.

It is noteworthy that the logic of gun-control advocates apparently did not apply to Mexico.

STL_Vet on October 2, 2012 at 12:02 PM

So would this not have happened if they didn’t get the F&F guns? I mean those are gangs in murder city we’re talking about here. Get a grip. Again, this “but It’s the WAY he did it that we are saying is wrong” is so old…. Because it was a bush program and McCain would have continued with it too.

This does not stop the fact that something is not right in this….they’re hiding something… I guess just like Romney with his taxes

Can.I.be.in.the.middle on October 2, 2012 at 9:33 AM

That has to be one of the most stupid posts I’ve ever read on this subject – bar none.
And, if you actually believe that F&F was a “Bush program…” – then you are too stupid to walk and chew gum at the same time. Or, you’re so besotted by lil barry hussein that you will believe anything that comes out of this regime – no matter how blatant a lie it is. F&F started in October 2009. How does that make it a “Bush program”?

The only thing you’re “in the middle” of is lil barry’s butt cheeks – with your lips puckered.

The only major goal they adhere to without fail is doing whatever they can to hurt American interests and wipe out their domestic opposition. Unfortunately, most Republicans (especially the elected officials) are too dim to realize this and insist on treating left as legitimate political players.

Doomberg on October 2, 2012 at 10:35 AM

This should be mandatory reading for weaselyone.

Taking the high road by the Right might be morally superior but it has also proven itself to be devastatingly uneffective when you’re dealing with a Left that has no shame, no morals, no emphaty, no common sense, etc, etc.

We have to start dealing with them as children incapable of understanding any rhyme or reason. The Left has to be spanked on the a$$, just like a juvenile child who has still to learn manners and who needs to grow up and face reality.

bluefox on October 2, 2012 at 12:30 PM

So let me see it I get this straight.

I have a gun with a serial number on it. I have a few guns for sale.

A guy comes to me and wants to buy my entire inventory, although there is a limit in my state as to how many he can buy at once.

I call the ATF. They tell me to sell to the guy. I tell them it’s against the law. They tell me to sell to the guy because they know him and it’s all good and they want me to do it.

So I sell the guns.

Later, my neighbor is shot and killed in the street. The gun is recovered. It’s one that I sold.

So I go to the cops and explain to them how I didn’t want to sell it, and my friend is dead and I want the ATF prosecuted. Then I call the news.

Everyone ignores me.

The next week my cousin is killed. The weapon is found at the scene.

I call the cops. I call the news. Everyone ignores me.

Does that have it about right?

cane_loader on October 2, 2012 at 12:34 PM

OK, if Holder doesn’t go to jail for criminal negligence, at the very least he is fired TODAY.

If I am the president of Mexico, I seize the maquiladora along the border until this is resolved, cut off all exports to the U.S., and dare 0bama to do something about it.

I have it on word-of-mouth from the L.A. street that one of the guns used in an attempted assassination of Pres. Calderon in 2010 or 2011 was a Fast & Furious weapon.

cane_loader on October 2, 2012 at 12:36 PM

So the guy actually got caught? So now it’s no longer whether this worked, it’s about transparency…

Can.I.be.in.the.middle on October 2, 2012 at 9:28 AM

No. The guns obviously weren’t tracked, or we’d have no dead people.

Honestly, guy, didn’t seeing the pools of blood in the street do anything to your mindset?

unclesmrgol on October 2, 2012 at 12:37 PM

So we are both reading the same thing, the diff is that you speculate about it, me I comment on what I read…without adding my conspiracy theories. See the diff?

Can.I.be.in.the.middle on October 2, 2012 at 10:22 AM

No-o-o-o. The difference is, that you try to defend your obamassiah – no matter how asinine it makes you. There is nothing that you won’t do or say to defend the indefensible actions of the most anti-American person to ever occupy high office.
You’re a liar and a quibbler – and you’ve sold your soul to the nanny state for a womb to tomb teat to suckle.

The ugly question is Why didn’t Issa go after all Ops under this umbrella? Why was the other Whistle Blower from the ATF op in Tampa,Fl., ignored completely by Issa & his gang? Why are they keeping the numbers of weapons lost and deaths due to those weapons to such ridiculously low numbers? Who or what is Issa covering for/up? The questions get uglier, but let’s just start with those for “Chairman Issa”!

Very ambiguous/poor/misleading article title.

It sounds like it could be that the cartel boss was captured, and that the people who captured him had Fast & Furious weapons. Only when I read the article did I see what you really meant.

The hour is 5 p.m., Sept. 11, Washington time, and the scene is an Oval Office meeting among President Obama, the secretary of defense, the national security adviser and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi has been under assault for roughly 90 minutes. Some 30 U.S. citizens are at mortal risk. The whereabouts of Ambassador Stevens are unknown.

Here is The Wall Street Journal’s account of the meeting:

“There was no serious consideration at that hour of intervention with military force, officials said. Doing so without Libya’s permission could represent a violation of sovereignty and inflame the situation, they said. Instead, the State Department reached out to the Libyan government to get reinforcements to the scene.”

cane_loader on October 2, 2012 at 12:34 PM

That’s close.

But you forgot the part where ATF decides that, since so many of your ex-guns are showing up at murder scenes, your right to buy and sell guns shall be restricted; and you will be subject to extra reporting and regulatory requirements not imposed on others.

“Sorry ’bout that, pal. You should have gotten it in writing.” — ATF
