Cartel boss captured with Fast & Furious weapons

posted at 9:21 am on October 2, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

How high up did the weapons of Operation Fast and Furious go in the cartels?  This high:

When Mexican authorities took Juarez drug cartel carnage king Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez — better known as “El Diego” — into custody, he had weapons from Operation Fast and Furious on his person, the English-language transcript of the Spanish-language television network Univision’s special investigation into the scandal shows.

“According to investigations, ‘El Diego’ forms the link between this massacre and Fast and Furious,” an anchor read on air in Spanish Sunday evening, referring to two different mass killings drug cartel operatives used Fast and Furious weapons to conduct as Univision reported.

“When he [El Diego] was captured in Chihuahua in the summer of 2011, he was found with weapons that the American government had allowed to enter Mexico,” the anchor added.

Supposedly, the point of the ATF/DoJ operation was to track the weapons so that they could find the movers and shakers in the Mexican drug cartels.  Imagine what would have happened if the ATF actually had intended totrack the weapons and cooperate with the Mexican government, as the Bush administration did earlier in Operation Wide Receiver.  The partnership might have caught El Diego a little sooner.

And they might have prevented this:

The English-language translated transcript of Spanish-language television news network Univision’s special report on Operation Fast and Furious shows that drug cartel leaders orchestrated a hit on innocent civilian teenagers using weapons they got from President Barack Obama’s administration. …

Davila’s children — 18-year-old Jose Luis Davila and 20-year-old Marco Davila — were next door at a birthday party with about 60 of their friends. “They had bought sodas, chips — the neighbors were going to make oranges with chilies for them, cracklings, everything,” their mother told Univision.

After that gunshot, Luz Davila said she knew something horrible happened to her children.

“I stood because it came to me and I said, ‘Something happened,’” Luz Davila told the network.

What had happened was Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez, or “El Diego,” the onetime leader of the Juarez Cartel’s La Linea, sent his team to the birthday party to kill what he thought were members of the rival Sinaloa Cartel.

Hernandez had ordered his men to block off the street and conduct the massacre under the mistaken notion that some of the attendees were Sinaloa rivals.  That turned out to be false, but more than a dozen hitmen sprayed fire throughout the neighborhood, killing 16 people overall, with guns helpfully supplied by the ATF.  (After his capture, Hernandez acknowledged that the targets were innocent.)

The Univision reporter says at the end that “the United States government has many things that they ought to make public.”  Unfortunately, this administration is still hiding Fast & Furious evidence and witnesses from Congressional investigators via a bogus executive privilege claim.  Perhaps that will change soon …. but perhaps it would be better to get a new executive in place so we can finally get answers as to how the American government armed Juarez cartel hitmen to conduct this massacre, and more importantly, why.

The Univision reporter says at the end that “the United States government has many things that they ought to make public.”

The US AG, Eric Holder, has been held in contempt of Congress, Univision. You guys have to see that and hit him directly between the eyes. Falsely expanding the argument to ” the United States Government ” moves it to the realm of the nebulous and gives Eric Holder, kevin O’Reilly and Barack Obama more cover by which to subvert your wishes to get more information, as well as those of the American people to find out what happened. The American citizens do not want Mexican citizens killed by the actions of our government. Thusly, we have tried to hold those persons—Holder, O’Reilly, Obama et al—accountable and they shrug us off. Right now, the best we can do is investigate, ask questions, and really put the heat on them. You guys in Mexico could at least help by naming names.

So that weapons sold at American guns shops could be found at Mexican crime scenes, traced to the US, and our 2nd Amendment rights be further restricted.

Hmmm, I don’t know, but I suspect it is a diversion from something.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Syria has moved small amounts of its chemical weapons from secure sites and U.S. intelligence is unsure where those weapons ended up.

“We just don’t know” the status of the stores of sarin nerve agent, mustard gas and cyanide in the Syrian stockpile that have been moved recently, Panetta said Friday at a Pentagon briefing with Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay.

Rumor has it that those Chemical Weapons are now in the hands of Hezbollah and Al Qaeda. Oh, and in what is I’m sure totally unrelated, Hezbollah has operative working in Mexico.

Spare us the “he would have had the guns anyways” argument, this was a head honcho cartel guy. He would be carrying the best weapons that the cartel was able to get their hands on, which in this case, came from our Government.

If Univision keeps this up, I’m sure in the near future we can confidently expect the English-language big media outlets to quickly follow up by doing a series of reports … on Univision’s excessive use of scantily clad females and the objectification of women in its shows. With appropriate negative comments from selected Latino feminist ‘advocates’ (which will disappear if Univision will go back to being a well-behaved Spanish-language network, like the NBC-owned Telemundo, and stop treating both Democrat and Republican presidents euqally).

1. Obviously, the DOJ and the ATF learned absolutely NOTHING from Waco and Ruby Ridge… Or maybe they did, but in an entirely wrong way.

2. Isn’t providing weapons to organization(s) that destabilize our allied foreign governments, bringing murder and mayhem the kind the narco-terrorists have brought, intentionally or not, under the auspices of a Federal government agency, a HIGH CRIME? The United States Government “virtually” selling those weapons to NARCOS!!!! This should be enough for the Mexican Government (and I wouldn’t blame them one bit!) to bring a serious case against Our Government before the World Court. If the Mexican Government ever requested it, I am sure they will get a hearing. The potential for world-wide embarrassment to our Federal government is so great that We The People should demand justice here!

In other words, heads should roll – beginning with those who executed this, and all the way to the top. That means Congress must act and go even further than what they have so far done – even if that means removing from office the Attorney General and the President, for consenting to this thing.

Especially with this President, who seems to have the overwhelming support of Latinos here. How is it that his Administration is becoming instrumental in killing so many of the relatives and friends of those ones whose votes he seeks? Doesn’t that give you the stench of hypocrisy?

3. The Mexican media there exposed Fast and Furious to the point that the Mexican people demanded justice and were able to do something about those leaders who did nothing to stem the carnage and stop the violence and mayhem from the narcos because of treaties with the US, or connections to the narcos themselves. Heads rolled in Mexico – why not here?

Why? Because, unlike the Mexican media, whose journalists risked their lives (and many lost them) to bring all of this information into the open for the people to know, our Mainstream Media has done NOTHING of that sort – because their interest is in protecting their Precious President, their precious status, and their precious elite, nepotistic and even incest-like connections rather than the lives and integrity of our people and government officials.

Brian Terry and Jaime Zapata were “collateral damage” to those people. They weren’t those “real lives” our MSM was interested in. That attitude is absolutely shameful. Our Founding Fathers established Freedom of the Press under our First Amendment so the Press would be a serious check on government power – not beggars at the government’s buffet table! It is shameful that it has to take the bravery of the Mexican press to remind us here of all we have lost with the selling-out of our own MSM to the Leftist and cultural elites, to the Democrat Party, and to Barack Obama.

4. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan should NOT hesitate to mention Fast and Furious during the upcoming debates. There is a very strong reason for this.

I heard this morning I believe on Fox and Friends that Univision is exposing this because they are angry at Obama for not following through on his promises with immigration.

1nolibgal on October 2, 2012 at 9:38 AM

I heard the same thing somewhere. I’m not sure I fully think it to be true but Obama made the tacit promise that he would push through universal amnesty. It was sacrificed for Obamacare and then politically not going to happen after the 2010 elections.

If the gun from this new shooting is tracked back to F&F, will the media even speak about it?

ConservativePartyNow on October 2, 2012 at 9:51 AM

There is already one confirmed fact–same work station as Brian Terry–which provides some debate gold.

hillsoftx on October 2, 2012 at 9:56 AM

Hernandez had ordered his men to block off the street and conduct the massacre under the mistaken notion that some of the attendees were Sinaloa rivals.

sounds like an LA block party. Who taught them this, Eric?

A dead federal agent and a dead ambassador on the eve of any debate has got to be mentioned.

ted c on October 2, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Fast and Furious is just too big of a scandal for the MSM to blatantly and shamefully ignore, for the American People not to be aware of, and for the Attorney General and the President to stay in power. The people of Mexico are outraged. Where is the outrage here in America?

Raquel Pinkbullet on October 2, 2012 at 9:59 AM

So, Mr Obama, it looks as if you secure US embassies just like you secure the US border, what do you have to say to the dead US ambassador, the 3 dead federal agents and to the families of >300 dead Mexicans who were showcased on Univision on Sunday night?

Oh yes. The moral equivalency just jumps right out at you.

Cleombrotus on October 2, 2012 at 10:03 AM

The only transparent fact is that this administration is completely opaque when it comes to issues that they are failing upon. Unsecured borders, unsecured embassies, unsecured ambassadors, and unsecured border agents. The only things that are secure are the Khalidi tape and most of Obama’s sordid past.

hmph.
