Univision’s bombshell: Fast & Furious not just in Arizona, or Mexico

posted at 12:41 pm on October 1, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The other shoe dropped on the ATF’s Operation Fast and Furious last night, and it should sting — if enough people pay attention to it. Univision reported that the effort wasn’t just limited to one ATF office in Arizona — it had other operations in Florida and Texas as well. The ATF and Department of Justice lost more weapons than they have so far acknowledged, and those weapons have been tied to even more murders than previously thought — including a massacre of teens and young adults. This report literally showed blood flowing in the streets as a result of Fast and Furious, as ABC News reports:

On January 30, 2010, a commando of at least 20 hit men parked themselves outside a birthday party of high school and college students in Villas de Salvarcar, Ciudad Juarez. Near midnight, the assassins, later identified as hired guns for the Mexican cartel La Linea, broke into a one-story house and opened fire on a gathering of nearly 60 teenagers. Outside, lookouts gunned down a screaming neighbor and several students who had managed to escape. Fourteen young men and women were killed, and 12 more were wounded before the hit men finally fled.

Indirectly, the United States government played a role in the massacre by supplying some of the firearms used by the cartel murderers. Three of the high caliber weapons fired that night in Villas de Salvarcar were linked to a gun tracing operation run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), according to a Mexican army document obtained exclusively by Univision News.

Univision News identified a total of 57 more previously unreported firearms that were bought by straw purchasers monitored by ATF during Operation Fast and Furious, and then recovered in Mexico in sites related to murders, kidnappings, and at least one other massacre.

Even more troubling was the expanding scope of Fast and Furious, which wasn’t limited to Arizona — nor to Mexico, for that matter:

The Univision News investigation also found ATF offices from states besides Arizona pursued similar misguided strategies. In Florida, the weapons from Operation Castaway ended up in the hands of criminals in Colombia, Honduras and Venezuela[,] the lead informant in the case told Univision News in a prison interview. …

Other firearms under ATF surveillance were permitted to leave the country from Texas, according to court documents and the exclusive testimony of Magdalena Avila Villalobos, the sister of an ICE agent who survived a confrontation with cartel hit men on a rural highway in Mexico on February 15, 2011. His fellow agent, Jaime Zapata, was killed during the attacks.

“It’s not from Arizona and Fast and Furious,” Avila Villalobos told Univision News, speaking in her brother’s stead for the first time, “but it’s a very similar operation…” She later added, “Those weapons that have been recovered, it’s been confirmed that they were weapons used in the shootout that killed Jaime Zapata and wounded Victor Avila.”

Give ABC News credit for partnering with Univision on this report.  The American media has mostly been uninterested in this story, with the notable exceptions of Sharyl Attkisson at CBS and the LA Times.  This new report shows that Operation Fast and Furious was a larger program than the Obama administration has admitted, with several offices coordinating on those efforts, with a much wider scope for gun distribution than anyone let on.

Just FYI — the Obama White House is still insisting that executive privilege applies on Fast and Furious communications.  I’d guess that has something to do with the information broadcast by Univision last night.  That’s just one reason Paul Ryan has now joined the call for Eric Holder’s resignation:

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan agrees with presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s call for Attorney General Eric Holder to resign, or for President Barack Obama to fire him, over Operation Fast and Furious, a Ryan spokesman told The Daily Caller.

“The congressman agrees with the governor,” Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck told TheDC on Sunday, referring to Mitt Romney’s call for Holder’s resignation or termination over the gunwalking scandal last December.

“Either Mr. Holder himself should resign, or the president should ask for his resignation or remove him,” Romney said in December 2011. “It’s unacceptable for him to continue in that position now given the fact that he has misled Congress and entirely botched the investigation of the Fast and Furious program.”

We need a resignation — followed by a real investigation.

It would appear that the left does not care about deaths outside our country, obamas right war has now gone over 2000 deaths and still no anti war protest by the code pinko stinkos. Why would they care about a bunch of Mexicans or for that matter innocent babies in the womb. The left is full of hypocrites. Is it any wonder why the country is in the toilet.

Not a rogue operation by a single ATF office.

BTW, has it been determined if the F&F guns found at the scenes of these murders were actually the guns used, or were they simply planted there?

Over a year ago, on one of the local gun boards here in Arizona, somebody linked a story to an FFL dealer in the Dallas area who claimed that the BATFE had given him the green light to make sales to straw purchasers.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit. Yet aren’t we led to believe (via the IG report) that this was all the result of a rogue Phoenix office?

It’s getting pretty deep in here.

This is also some interesting background info. I think that the Mexican President must have known about this, and that is why they can’t talk about it. Around that time, the Mexican President came to the US, and was talking about how all the guns they find are US made…

This might logically then look like a plan to tell the American people they need to stop all the gun freedom. I think they will still try it, no matter whether it is Obama or Romney as president, the documentary definitly looks to me like someone wants SOMETHING.

They want money or to tell the US what to do. I am rather suspicious that people on that side of the border knew about it.

Fleuries on October 1, 2012 at 12:52 PM

I’m sure the mere mention of this is gonna make Obama go up another couple points in the polls. We live in WeirdWorld these days. The biggest scandal to hit the U.S. government, maybe since it’s inception, fails to even put a few ripples in the pond. A “scandal” with the sole purpose of undermining the 2nd Amendment. I guess if the citizenry is de-armed there will be less bumps in the road.

The opposition party, the supposed champions of freedom from government, looks at the topic as off-limits. The general public is too ignorant to even take notice. The left is totally on board with these tactics.

“Americans are not often moved by the pain of those outside their country . . . ” that they haven’t been told about.

Americans respond with great compassion and generosity to tragedies around the world. But most Americans know little if anything about the consequences of F&F. In fact, I’d bet a great percentage don’t even know about the scandal at all. The Univision program really brought the personal tragedy aspect to the forefront. Even when I didn’t have the English subtitles up, the heartbreak came through loud and clear.

This is an article from April 16 2009 telling about Obama’s trip to Latin America.

Mr. Obama hoped to shore up the efforts of his Mexican counterpart, President Felipe Calderón, to combat the rising tide of cross-border drug violence.

But while the two pledged their “shared responsibility” in the drug wars during a news conference here, they seemed to diverge on the issue of the assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. Mr. Calderón said nearly 90 percent of the weapons seized in Mexico could be traced to the United States, adding that organized crime increased after the ban expired.

Mr. Obama campaigned on a platform of renewing it, but he suggested Thursday that reviving the ban was politically impossible because of opposition from gun enthusiasts. “None of us are under any illusion that reinstating that ban would be easy,” Mr. Obama said, while insisting he was “not backing off at all” from his conviction that renewing the ban made sense.

The old media is totally in the tank for Obama, and only a small segment of the population accesses this kind of information elsewhere. So it will go no where.

Obama could eat a live puppy in plain view, and the media would intentionally bury the story- or worse yet lie about it, or claim that everyone eats puppies, or that Romney eats hotdogs or whatever.

The media is destroying the country.
Why are there no protests against the media?
We better stop viewing them as somehow sacrosanct and deal with them in a manner that they deserve as enemies within.

Holder is Obama’s ideological twin, so no way either of them even consider a resignation. There’s only one way – fire both of them in November.

On a bit of a side note, where in the political rule-book does it tell politicians never to admit fault? In the real world, at least, it’s rather refreshing when someone admits to being wrong. Pols should try it – the people might not be the retarded knee-jerk reactionaries they think we are. On the other hand, having Eric Holder parse the definition of lying makes me want to vomit. You’d think watching the video that all the guns in Mexico come from the US:

In fact, the 3,480 guns positively traced to the United States equals less than 12 percent of the total arms seized in Mexico in 2008 and less than 48 percent of all those submitted by the Mexican government to the ATF for tracing. This means that almost 90 percent of the guns seized in Mexico in 2008 were not traced back to the United States.

Out of those 12% a lot of those were simply handed to the criminals by the 0bama regime. Also wrong in the video was that operation wide receiver under Bush has tracking mechanisms in the guns, 0bama’s Fast and Furious didn’t bother with electronic tracking.

If this were some foreign war how many conservatives would demand to bring the troops home? The war on drugs has been the top excuse to take our liberties from day one! The corruption! The militarization of our police! The human suffering is overwhelming!
Treat drugs just like alcohol! The time is way past! All of this is so horrible! It is just sickening!

Now watch the American press blackball Univision as they have been so “truthful” about reporting on this President.
Can’t wait for the MSM factcheckers to unload on Univision.

I have a good friend who is as conservative as I am – but, when I mentioned F&F to him a couple of weeks ago, he had never heard about it.
I have three democrat neighbors – all union supporters and retirees – who have satellite TVs and watch the alphabet news faithfully….who have never heard of F&F. And who – to a man – deny that it ever could have happened.

Solaratov on October 1, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Ad Ed wrote: “it should sting — if enough people pay attention to it.” And it’s not just that. I have been paying attention, and watched Darrell Issa on Greta many times, but I don’t know what’s the deal with it. It’s a haze. This isn’t a good issue for us, unless we get it down to succinct poignant points that hit hard, otherwise move on. There are plenty of other issues to tag Obama with.

Priorities??

The Mexican government was also fully aware and cooperated with the U.S. during Wide Receiver. Fast and Furious did not.

JPeterman on October 1, 2012 at 1:11 PM

An EXCELLENT point JP and one I’m adding moving forward. Wide Receiver was a cooperative effort.

petefrt on October 1, 2012 at 1:26 PM

Brian Terry.

Where is the third gun found at the kill site?

Who were the FBI and DEA paid informants who were in on the kill?

Where are these informants?

Why did the FBI Director have a yelling stomping fit when he heard the news of the death of Biran Terry and the action taken to hide the third gun?

Why was Brian Terry assigned to that place at that time?

Why have the other Border Partol employees who know things been put under gag orders to this day.

Last be very careful that this Univison deal ends up being mis-direction.

This may be a partial fall out of information to keep the real secret unknown still.

You have the Clinton’s and Obama in this deal so it could be very, very sick and ugly the real deal.

I agree – open clinics and let drug addicts have all the drugs they want…..

Burial will be free…..

redguy on October 1, 2012 at 1:27 PM

Agreed, but Mitt needs to put names on it. Jamie Zapatta, Brian Terry and Amb. Chris Stevens. Alinsky it – Personalize it!

D-fusit on October 1, 2012 at 1:06 PM

This should be Romney’s response in debates when Hussein mentions “he killed Bin Laden”. And then add the other victim’s names in Fast and Furious and Benghazi.

All the more evidence that this was not some well intentioned sting operation gone bad. Blood running in the streets WAS the intention. The political capital thus created to be used later to attack the 2nd amendment. Rahmbo’s “never let a crisis go to waste” could be finished with “and if you can’t find one, create it.”

jnelchef on October 1, 2012 at 1:28 PM

A straw purchase is any purchase wherein an agent acquires a good or service for someone who is unable to purchase the good or service himself. Straw purchases are legal except in cases where the ultimate receiver of goods or services uses those goods or services in the commission of a crime.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_purchase

“Except … .”

davidk on October 1, 2012 at 1:17 PM

That’s somewhat deceiving.
When applied to gun purchases, ALL straw purchases are illegal. Either the straw ourchaser is buying a gun and delivering it to someone who is prohibited from buying a gun in the US; or he is buying a gun and delivering it to someone who wants to avoid being the owner of record.
The gun does not have to be used in a crime for the straw purchase to be illegal. It’s always illegal.

(This does not apply to guns which are gifts; as long as all other laws are observed.)

Yes, it is. But not as sickening as the market forces put to work when/if drugs are legalized.

Exactly, are the producers going to go out of business when their original customers die off?

Equally baffling is the fact that the soon-to-be TFNIP* still has about a 70% approval rating among American Jews.

Why wouldn’t they? They created Hussein in one way or another, via their mutual love for communism. And still are his MAIN funding source, whether on Wall Street, Chicago, Florida or Hollywood. Rabid communism at its best.

riddick on October 1, 2012 at 1:31 PM

Pat Caddell coined the phrase “Enemy of the American People Media” recently. I think it is spot on and that we should refer to them as such from now on and spread the word far and wide!
