Certain illegal immigrants now eligible for drivers’ licenses in California

posted at 4:01 pm on October 1, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

On Sunday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Assembly Bill 2189, which will allow hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants to legally obtain drivers’ licenses in the state. The eligibility requirements are comparable to those expected for President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (that little tidbit of ‘prosecutorial discretion’ the Obama administration unveiled earlier this year that will allow illegal immigrants who meet the criteria to obtain work permits), i.e., people who came into the country before the age of 16, are under 31 years of age, are in/have been to school or have served in the military, and have not since committed any other crimes after entering the United States. Via the NYDN:

AB2189 by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, will let the Department of Motor Vehicles issue licenses to illegal immigrants eligible for work permits under a new Obama administration policy. The bill requires the department to accept as proof of legal residence whatever document the federal government provides to participants in its deferred action program.

Cedillo said his bill will make roads safer while letting young immigrants drive to school and to work. His reasoning drew support from several Republican lawmakers, while other Republicans argued the state should leave immigration issues to the federal government. …

He said California is the first state to grant drivers’ licenses to the group singled out under the Obama administration’s policy. Cedillo praised Brown for choosing “public safety over politics” by signing the bill.

The law’s advocates argue that the law will increase public safety by ensuring that people who are here anyway can now be trained and tested as drivers without fear and that they’ll be more likely to buy car insurance, while the opposition argument runs more along the lines of, ‘Why don’t we just roll out the welcome wagon while we’re at it?’ One does have to wonder at deeply-in-the-red California’s seemingly impervious-to-fiscal-realities rush to implement programs that will come at a significant financial and bureaucratic cost to the state, without figuring out how to pay for them, especially while implicitly inviting more non-taxpaying illegal aliens to come and find sanctuary there. I wonder if any of the motivation could perhaps be similar to the federal government’s reasoning behind doing things like this? Via the Daily Caller:

Department of Agriculture personnel in the Obama administration have met with Mexican Government officials dozens of times since the president took office to promote nutrition assistance programs — notably food stamps — among Mexican Americans, Mexican nationals and migrant communities in America.

Writing in response to Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions’ July request for information about the USDA’s little known partnership with the Mexican government to educate citizen and noncitizen immigrants from Mexico about the availability of food stamps and other nutrition assistance programs, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack defended the partnership as a way to curb hunger in America — and the continuation of a program formed under the Bush administration in 2004.

“The Mexico-U.S. Partnership for Nutrition Assistance Initiative is just one of a wide range of USDA partnership activities intended to promote awareness of nutrition assistance among those who need benefits and meet all program requirements under current law.” Vilsack wrote to Sessions in a letter obtained by The Daily Caller.

Problem is that said “train” goes from nowhere to nowhere…it’s already way over budget…and we’re still in the paid “study” phase of the project.

By the time it’s completed, we’ll have to invent new numbers to determine the cost….and it will probably run for 300 feet.

I saw this in a recent ag related newspaper, but the USDA is now giving out grants for housing for farm workers… why?

http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome?contentid=2012/09/0290.xml&contentidonly=true

The USDA is quickly becoming the go to place for racial redistributionism.

I live on a farm… there is no farm labor shortage… farming is an extremely profitable enterprise anymore and there are too many farmers that are unwilling to raise their wages.

20 years dow the road is not what we need to worry about today. GULAG (Kaliphornian Khaliphate) will now license MILLIONS of their illegals, even by liberals’ counts there is roughly 7 Million of illegals residing now in the state. And most likely more if liberals cop to such a high number. Once they are licensed they can then disperse through most of USA with legal paper in hand.

So, never mid 20 years down the road, or even 10. The problem is here TODAY.

Actually, it’s typical Democrat brilliance. They are initiating a process that will end with millions of illegal immigrants on the voter rolls, helping to increase their Electoral College votes and popular votes in Federal elections. At the end of the day, the Feds will use your tax dollars from Des Moines, Springield, Peoria, etc. to bail out California’s (seemingly)insane spending habits. Brilliant!

I hear Panama is nice, but they use the US Dollar as their currency, so be forewarned.

Dante on October 1, 2012 at 4:04 PM

And now local law enforcement are prohibited from reporting illegal aliens to immigration. In effect, then, there is zero enforcement of immigration laws. That, because as Hispanics now make up over 40% of the population, and a majority of the population believe that illegals should be as a good citizens. Next step: make it as easy and legal as pie for illegals to come over to and move to California, ready for amnesty. Just do away with or undermine federal immigration agents, and let them b(Mexicans) come. Beyond that, extensive wealth taxes are on the agenda as California will seek to redistribute and sustain its welfare state by pirating the assets of established wealth.

No, Dante, I agree with you on most issues, but not here. This influx of low income poorly educated immigrants and their offspring will be the opposite of libertarian. They will go ahead and push for what’s in their self-interest… to democratically get $ from the wealthier half.. de facto redistributed to them. And the problem for the other 49 states is that an open borders CA will serve as the jumping off spot for the new immigrants and their clans. Like a gangrene, CA needs to be cordoned off from the rest of the country.

anotherJoe on October 1, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Before we get too overwrought about this, receipt of the driver’s license is completely contingent upon the illegal offering proof that the federal government has accepted the illegal’s application under the Deferred Action program.

The bill requires the department to accept as proof of legal residence whatever document the federal government provides to participants in its deferred action program.

That application requires submission of all your personal data, as well as that of parents, siblings, and possibly extended family, documentation of residence, proof of education in the U.S., and quite a bit else, all of which goes right into La Migra‘s data bank for selective non-enforcement, or not, depending on La Migra’s mood and who happens to be President in the next 2 years. The applications expire after 2 years, I believe, and has to be re-submitted (wonder if the CA driver’s license expires with it?).

The point is, they’re not signing up for this program in droves. People who have spent their lives living in the shadows know better than to come out of the shadows of federal say-so. Illegals are being counseled by immigration groups to wait and see– especially to see if Obama is re-elected. Right now the Deferred Action program, and this bill, are all show-and-tell. And illegals aren’t sure they want to show.

Latinos may be the majority of beneficiaries, but a particular party wants to take no chances and load up on as many potential beneficiaries across the spectrum as possible, with the hope that the recipients of dem good will might show their gratitude and loyalty by voting for the political party making it all possible and the dream of perpetual political power, already evident in a few states, comes closer to reality nationwide.

The law’s advocates argue that the law will increase public safety by ensuring that people who are here anyway can now be trained and tested as drivers without fear and that they’ll be more likely to buy car insurance…

“More likely to buy” doesn’t mean they will buy it.

Had this being offering gun licenses there would be an scandal for putting a gun in the hands of anybody. Yet, let’s indiscriminately put a license to use what can be a deadly machine such as a car on illegal immigrants.

I know, I know: cars don’t kill people. Illegal immigrants behind the wheel kill people, such as in north Carolina, Minnesota, Florida, Arizona, and many other places. And they literally get away with murder because nobody wants to prosecute an illegal.

DHS: Illegal Aliens With Same-Sex Partners Will Be Eligible for Deportation Reprieve

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 6:01pm
******************************************

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Department of Homeland Security is planning to issue a policy memo stating that illegal immigrants with American same-sex partners are eligible to have their deportations put on hold under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority cases.

The move had been sought by gay rights activists and their allies in Congress before Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced plans for the policy Thursday in a letter to 84 Democratic lawmakers.

“It will mark the very first time that lesbian and gay couples have been recognized within immigration policy for relief,” said Steve Ralls, the spokesman for Immigration Equality, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender immigrants.

canopfor on October 1, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Who needs laws, man? Just take another toke…

riddick on October 1, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Hey!!!!

This is for my Glaucoma.

Tim_CA on October 1, 2012 at 4:43 PM

California can issue drivers licenses to whomever it chooses.

Dante on October 1, 2012 at 4:33 PM

But why would they?

Easy. Its ID that must be accepted, everywhere. Across state lines. I believe the dems know it opens a lot of doors not yet already open wide for our illegal invaders nationwide.

hawkeye54 on October 1, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Good points and question. I didn’t really think it through. I’m not sure what we can do anymore. We tried with the Gray Davis recall but Schwarzenneger revealed himself as a fraud and weakling. At this point, the state seems irrecoverable.

rrpjr on October 1, 2012 at 4:36 PM

yep, the dimtards and the demographics took care of it. btw, is there a legal way to hold the lawmakers and politicians responsible for ruining a state and make them pay for it, I mean only an idiot cannot see that the Kali disaster is the work of 4 decades of unfettered dimcrat insanity and inanity…

jimver on October 1, 2012 at 4:44 PM

Article IV, both the privileges and immunities clause and full faith and credit clause

Dante on October 1, 2012 at 4:36 PM

Oh, you meant this part.

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.

Well then that must mean that California MUST recognize my concealed weapons permit. Why doesn’t it?

Oldnuke on October 1, 2012 at 4:44 PM

But why would they?

darwin on October 1, 2012 at 4:39 PM

Who cares?

Dante on October 1, 2012 at 4:44 PM

“Libertarians” are now the new liberals…

riddick on October 1, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Other than being with us on (some) economic issues, there’s virtually no difference in practice between a libertarian and a liberal. When push comes to shove, they will vote with the Democrats.

DHS: Illegal Aliens With Same-Sex Partners Will Be Eligible for Deportation Reprieve

Really? I’m surprised they just aren’t fast tracked for immediate citizenship.

Oldnuke on October 1, 2012 at 4:44 PM

I agree, they should. Take it to court.

Dante on October 1, 2012 at 4:46 PM

Come to think of it, Moonbeam has never cared much for the middle class. They tend to be too conservative and politically independent, not a reliable voting bloc for hardcore leftists.

hawkeye54 on October 1, 2012 at 4:37 PM

Latest numbers point out that middle class moving out of CA to other states, primarily to TX/NV/AZ in the past 2 decades have taken roughly $15 BILLION of income/taxes with them.

And now that Amazon sales tax is going to hit CA businesses I can see a much bigger and quicker migration of small to medium size business moving out as well. Apple already moves all its receipts through an office in NV and last year hired 3600 people in TX, no new hires in CA.

Reality will hit CA sooner rather than later, it seems.

riddick on October 1, 2012 at 4:46 PM

The law’s advocates argue that the law will increase public safety by ensuring that people who are here anyway can now be trained and tested as drivers without fear and that they’ll be more likely to buy car insurance

And it’s safer for the public not to chase criminals like murderers and bank robbers as they tend to think they have little to lose when fleeing.

If only we wouldn’t make criminals feel so criminal maybe they’d be nicer criminals while they’re breaking the law.

Really? That is the best you’ve got for an argument?

States can just refuse to acknowledge any California DL period.

I loved Entourage episode dealing with this crap.

“Doctor, I have these headaches…”

“I am not here to listen to your life story, I just need a name”.

riddick on October 1, 2012 at 4:50 PM

I think we should give them drivers licenses showing them to be living here illegally and allowing them to drive only where they are legally allowed to live.

Knott Buyinit on October 1, 2012 at 4:50 PM

Because California is a sovereign state that can do as she wishes. Are you opposed to federalism?

Doomberg on October 1, 2012 at 4:44 PM

Like I said, they gave us Clenis (Ross Perot votes) and now will give us 4 more years of HUSSEIN.

All the while being a heavily induced drugged state and claiming they love freedom while in reality voting, time and again, against it.

riddick on October 1, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Dante on October 1, 2012 at 4:50 PM

Federalism does not include abetting illegal action or behavior, which this clearly does.

darwin on October 1, 2012 at 4:54 PM

It’s my understanding that DLs are reciprocal through out the country. If other states let CA know that agreement is no longer in effect, this will come to the sudden stop the idea should have gotten in the first place.

States should feel free to consider ANY California DL invalid for either for operating a vehicle and identification.
