Quotes of the day

posted at 8:01 pm on September 30, 2012 by Allahpundit

Mitt Romney is about as close to defeating President Barack Obama as any Republican could have hoped to be. The polls–if you believe them–show him slightly or significantly behind, but within striking distance. The challenge he faces is unique: he is acting, and is being treated as, the incumbent rather than the insurgent. In effect, “President” Romney has been in office since mid-August, with none of the power but all of the responsibility.

It was President Romney, not Obama, who set aside time to visit victims of Hurricane Isaac. It was President Romney, not Obama, who reacted swiftly to the attacks on our embassies by standing up for American freedom. It was President Romney, not Obama, who took on the entitlements crisis head-on by adopting many of Paul Ryan’s ideas. It was President Romney, not Obama, who laid out a practical plan for the housing crisis.

The media have also treated Romney as the incumbent, pouncing on every word and gesture, seizing on every mistake and inventing errors where none exist. Romney’s so-called “gaffes” have one thing in common: they are all statements of fact. He is being held to a presidential standard–for presidents should know better than to tell all–while Obama’s outright lies to the nation (on Libya, the debt, etc.) are ignored by the media.

***

Previously, the press has been both biased in a partisan way and an in an ideological way, but usually the partisanship was driven by ideology. As you may have noticed, the press are great fans of gay marriage and abortion, and they shape their coverage to put the best possible face on these positions, and the worst possible face on opponents. (To the extent they feature contrary voices at all.)

That’s bias, of course. We’ve gotten used to that.

But in the Benghazi debacle, there is no possible ideological grounding to explain their bias. There is, I trust, no ideological movement that advocates for intelligence failures and the deaths of good-guy diplomats. There is no ideological movement in favor of reckless incompetence bordering on malice in providing security for consulates abroad (which, as a legal matter, are considered US territory)…

This isn’t ideological bias, then. This is pure advocacy for a political party. Obama’s embarrassment is not an ideological issue — or should not be. I hope we can all agree that a president should attend security briefings — especially as 9/11 approaches — and provide adequate warning and security for US government personnel. I hope we can all agree that the government does not suddenly gain a Right To Shamelessly Lie about its failures, simply because it finds it politically advantageous to do so.

***

I think we’re at the most dangerous time in our political history in terms of the balance of power in the role that the media plays in whether or not we maintain a free democracy or not. You know, when I first started in politics – and for a long time before that – everyone on both sides, Democrats and Republicans, despised the press commonly, because they were SOBs to everybody. Which is exactly what they should be. They were unrelenting. Whatever the biases were, they were essentially equal-opportunity people.

That changed in 1980…

If a president of either party—I don’t care whether it was Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton or George Bush or Ronald Reagan or George H. W. Bush—had a terrorist incident, and got on an airplane after saying something, and flown off to a fundraiser in Las Vegas, they would have been crucified! It would have been—it should have been the equivalent, for Barack Obama, of George Bush’s “flying over Katrina” moment. But nothing was said at all, and nothing will be said…

We have a political campaign where, to put the best metaphor I can on it, where the referees on the field are sacking the quarterback of one team, tripping up their runners, throwing their bodies in front of blockers, and nobody says anything. The Republicans don’t.

I doubt you will make any headway trying to convince these folks about Ryan’s voodoo economics. Their main focus is to get rid of Obama at all cost.
He could save their only child from drowning and these folks will still vote against him. The real middle class sees that hence the reason why R&R is losing and will lose Nov 6th.

HotAirLib on September 30, 2012 at 9:15 PM

Speaking of voodoo economics, I think Obama has been working his own magic the last four years.

Falling income, rising debt, rising unemployment, shrinking work force, almost 48 million on food stamps, and on and on…but we can not blame Saint Barry…oh nooooo, he has a D behind his name and that makes the poor baby a victim. Meanie old Republicans picking on sweet li’l Barry.

Check out this fine email from the DCCC. They know their voters are too dumb to do their own math. We all know MATH IS HARD!! From Al Franken-

Sasha — You know I like to talk about math in these emails.

Well, check out this equation: (4 seat Democratic majority) + (12 races polling within the margin of error) – (you) = disaster.

See, without you, we lose the Senate – and Republicans get to treat President Obama’s agenda like a piñata.

Not that they’re literally going to hit it with sticks (although you never know with this crowd). They’ll just repeal all the stuff we’ve already passed and block everything else.

That would be awful. So don’t let it happen. Click here and make a $5 contribution so we can hit our last (and most important) quarterly fundraising goal of the whole campaign.

Every dollar you give will be matched 3-to-1. Give $10, and it’ll count for $30. Give $33.33, and it’ll count for $99.99. You get the idea.

You’re the X factor in this race. Get us over the top now, and we can win this thing. Otherwise…eek.

Thanks,
Al

P.S.: You don’t have to do the math yourself to take advantage of the 3-to-1 match. Just click here to give what you can, and we’ll handle the multiplying-your-impact-by-3 part.

Anybody got an Occam’s Razor explanation for why those weapons keep getting ditched at the crime scenes? Especially since Mexico has such strict gun laws and all, you’d think the criminals would want to avoid the hassle of having to replace them after every mass murder.

AZfederalist on September 30, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Guns are ridiculously easy to obtain in Latin America, and in Mexico particularly, because of the shared border with the U.S., or if you have the right connections with Mexican law enforcement or the military. They’re extremely corrupt. ATF always there to help out, too, as we now know.

I’ve been told that cartel members typically do leave guns at the crime scene because the weapons are easily replaced (see ¶ above) and the shooters don’t want to be found with murder weapons on them if they do run into the occasional honest federale. Reporter Matthew Boyle (posted at Alipac) also writes:

Mexican drug cartel operatives commonly leave murder weapons at crime scenes so they aren’t found with them at a later time.

If you could point to even one time when Obama has gone out of his way to help someone, that would be nice. He wouldn’t even give his brother money for an operation for his child. His brother had to call a conservative who interviewed him for the money. His aunt and uncle live on welfare, and he hasn’t lifted a finger to help them. That is just his family. Oh, and a “composite” story of his beneficence is not acceptable. ObamaBinBiden give less to charity than anyone except Al Gore. Snap to it, it will take you a long time!

commodore on September 30, 2012 at 8:15 PM

Yeah those caveat notes are signs of fear from a democrat operative… Based on the progression of the absentees ballots the democrats would end up with approximately 60,000 absentee ballots over Republicans in 2012… In 2008 they had an advantage of 160,000 absentee ballots over Republicans… In other word just in “absentee ballots” the democrats are going to lose a net of 100,000 votes… If the same ratio of democrats losses continue in early “in person vote” and “Elections Day” vote then Obama is certainly going to lose Ohio…

I don’t remember any instance of Obama helping anyone, and I’m sure if he did it would be page one news.

Hold on now, does Barky’s brother living in Kenya really need assistance? I visited Kenya while in the Navy and I can tell you firsthand that the $1 per month that brother George earns can go a long way in that country.

Bishop on September 30, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Apparently, surgery costs more than $1 in Kenya, because they do not have our new, outstanding, free healthcare.

Night Owl on September 30, 2012 at 9:40 PM

You didn’t answer my question.

Where is Obama’s plan? Where is his budget? Why did the Dem’s reject all of King Obama’s budgets?

Better yet, why was there no security around our consulate in Benghazi? Why did Susan Rice lie to the American people? Where’s Hillary? Why did King Obama quietly cancel his meeting with Morsi last week?

Speak up.

JPeterman on September 30, 2012 at 9:23 PM

It must really hurt you that no one outside of the far right conservative class cares about this. You and your deranged conservative friends can continue asking till you turn blue. The polls will continue showing Obama beating R&R to a pulp.

The middle class cares about not having their wealth transferred to the upper 1%. The middle class cares about good schools for their kids. The middle class cares about getting paid a decent wage by their employers. They care about the future of America and dont want America to turn into a 3rd world country where wealth is only concentrated at the very top. They want to have the same opportunity everyone else has to get ahead.

Its too bad the far right is so anti middle class and pro upper 1%.

HotAirLib on September 30, 2012 at 9:40 PM

Barky has a plan. Oh yes, he has all sorts of plans that include the term “flexibility” right there at the top of the page.

The man is willing to frame the entire nation to try and curb the 2nd Amendment. Yep, plans.

BTW, other than it ain’t my fault and tax the rich what bright ideas has President screw up come up with?

Terrye on September 30, 2012 at 9:14 PM

Well, let’s be fair here. President Downgrade has had numerous plans:

– Abrogate contract law and fail to pay preferred bond holders during the government takeover of GM and instead pay the unions in favor of the preferred bond holders. This served notice on all investors that contract law held no sway with the current regime and has served to poison future investment in other bonds due to the uncertainty caused by this.

– Provide “green energy” loans for alternate energy companies. Most of whom have failed, gone bankrupt, or are nearing bankruptcy

– Promise to tax the rich “just a little bit more” despite the fact that they already pay higher tax rates on ordinary income

– Promise to raise capital gains tax rates on the rich. This does wonders for investment in US companies

– Halt drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico. Despite court rulings finding this illegal, this permitorium continues to this day. This suppresses the production of US energy and increases our reliance on foreign oil

– Implement EPA regulations that will force numerous coal fired power plants to close, reducing the amount of available electricity in the US. Both driving down supply and driving up prices

– Initiate exploratory work in how to ban the practice of fracking. This will serve to supress the production of natural gas and further reduce US energy production

That’s a start. I’m sure Lester & Co can add to this.

AZfederalist on September 30, 2012 at 9:42 PM

That’s not true. Link to Ryan plan doesn’t count. Romney explicitly distanced himself from that budget. He’s calling the shots (or is he?) and he said he’s got his own plan.

Where is this plan?

What fevered mind came up with a plan that lets 15 year olds get sterilized, sterilized without having parental consent? What?
