Poll: What was the Obamateurism of the Week?

posted at 9:31 am on September 30, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

It’s time once again to deal with the gaffes we inherited this week and choose the OOTW!  Just remember, the future must not belong to those who slack off on OOTW selections.  Hey, I know it’s tough to choose the biggest failure, but it’s your patriotic duty to make a choice.  And don’t blame anyone else if you’re confused, but at least take comfort in the fact that you’re in good company.

Previous weekly “winners” in 2012:

Previous Obamateurisms of the Year:

  • Giving 2 minutes of “shout-outs” before getting to the Fort Hood shooting (2009)
  • Obama leaves Clinton at press conference podium on tax deal to attend Christmas party (2010)
  • “I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president— with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln.” (2011)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

BREAKING NEWS….Romney camp still unmoved by Polls and voter turnout models. Will proceed according to plan.

For all the complexities of polling, says Scott Rasmussen, there are some fairly simple numbers to remember when thinking about this year’s presidential race. “For the last 20 years, between 37 and 39 percent of voters on Election Day have been Democrats,” says the pollster. “Republicans have ranged from 32 to 37 percent. Right now, our sample looks like 36 percent Republican versus 39 percent Democrat.”

The bottom line, Rasmussen continues, is that there is most likely a two, three, or four percentage point advantage out there for Democrats. That’s what it’s been for nearly a generation; that’s probably what will happen on November 6.

Given that, and factoring in independents, Rasmussen’s national surveys show Barack Obama leading Mitt Romney by a small margin. The president has a two-point advantage in the latest Rasmussen national tracking poll, and comparably small margins in the super-swing states of Florida, Ohio, and Virginia. “I think the race is tilting, just barely, in Obama’s favor, with the potential to shift between now and Election Day,” he says.

After some polls, particularly one from Quinnipiac and the New York Times, showed huge Obama leads in the swing states — nine points in Florida and ten in Ohio — there’s been a contentious debate about the relationship between state polls and national polls. Romney aides constantly point reporters toward the national polls. Of course they do; those polls are closer, and at the moment the Romney campaign is fighting hard against the impression, gaining momentum in some media circles, that the race is virtually over.

U.S. Department of State Hosts Youth TechCamp in Pakistan
on Saturday, 29 September 2012 12:33
*************************************

Islamabad, Pakistan – The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), in collaboration with U.S. Embassy Islamabad and iEARN, hosted Youth TechCamp in Islamabad, Pakistan, September 27-29, 2012. A signature series hosted by the State Department to increase digital literacy, Youth TechCamp Pakistan engaged 40 alumni of the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program.

Youth TechCamp Pakistan encourages young people to engage and contribute to the digital networks and technologies of today’s interconnected world.

Youth TechCamp Pakistan provided three full days of training with top local technology experts specializing in civic journalism and social activism. Youth TechCamp Pakistan enabled these future leaders to learn how they can leverage connection technologies to make a positive impact in their communities and around the world.

faraway on September 30, 2012 at 9:55 AM

Exactly. So this would be a perfect instance to pull a James O’Keefe and get one of those phones to find out how they’re used to push propaganda. The media would indeed not say a word; they’ve yet to say anything about the Sept. 14 attack at Camp Bastion – two Marines killed, six Harriers destroyed. But the word can still be spread without the media.

86 on September 30, 2012 at 10:16 AM

cmsinaz on September 30, 2012 at 9:45 AM

Saw that. You know, I didn’t even realize until I read a post on the video at Legal Insurrection yesterday, that Obama actually has a government website set up to advertise these “free” phones, and that until a couple of days ago, the government site was calling these phones “Obama phones” and prominently featured a big photo of a grinning Obama making a phone gesture with his hand. (The Legal Insurrection article has a screen shot of the web page before the Obama administration changed it a few days ago after all the publicity).

I knew about the phone program (note the USF charge on my monthly phone bill), knew Obama had vastly expanded it, had seen the reports about the enormous waste and fraud in the expanded program (e.g., drug dealers using the “free” phones for their transactions, many scammers getting multiple “free” phones and then selling them, etc.), but I thought that the term “Obama phone” was just a street nickname. Had no idea that the Obama people were actually calling it that on a government website.

Good to know that every time I pay my phone bill, I’m also making a donation (via the USF charge) to the Obama re-election campaign.

AZCoyote on September 30, 2012 at 10:16 AM

I freely slander the pedophile thieving assassin of poets and plagiarizing mass-murdering desert warlord Mohammad, the putative “prophet”.

The only “prophet” who ever admitted being deceived by Satan.

Obama is an embarrassment to America for this grovelling statement.

Shared sacrifice is code for redistribution of wealth via Obama himself (according to the masses.) “We,” the taxpayers, provide for this service and he doesn’t even thank us. Creeper.

The phones should say, “Paid for by the American taxpayers against their will.”

And it really, really rankles me that this leftist mantra of “it’s Bush’s fault” has become so damn mainstream. All Bush did was quickly lift the economy out of the 9/11 recession by cutting taxes on EVERYONE. It was Pelousy, Greid, the loudmouth faggot Frank, and Dodderer, with an assist from previous Bill Clinton legislation, who sank this economy. The progressive leftist democraps have had control of both houses for the last EIGHT years (yes, they control the House now too because of Gried’s pocket vetoes of all their bills), and they have run roughshod over the American ideal and it’s people.

OK, that’s my rant for the day.

This week’s choice is easy. This was perhaps Obama’s worst executive power grab yet, proclaiming blaspheming the pedophile prophet of the religion of his youth all but illegal and having the guy he SCAPEGOATED for the deaths of our people in Libya arrested.

wildcat72 on September 30, 2012 at 11:59 AM

The ad that would destroy Obama for good, this should be done by a SuperPAC:

Play the audio of Obama and Hillary apologizing to muslims, along with his “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam”, along with other excerpts from the Cairo speech where he praises the “holy koran” against video of:

1. The 9/11 attacks
2. Palis celebrating the attacks
3. Other muslim terror attacks, including Bengazi

How could anyone who saw that visual evidence listening to this President and his Regime’s own words vote for him?

Obama’s “religion of peace” [aka those wonderfully civilized mohammedans] are certainly acting like they deserve to be respected…torching Buddhist temples and Christian churches, killing any and all who do not “submit” to mohammed, setting off car bombs all over the place, wanton destruction and mayhem all across the globe all in the name of mohammed….

And we are supposed to “respect” them?

In another time, we’d call them the enemy, and as we did imperial Japan and National Socialist Germany, render them powerless on a grand scale and compel them to join the civilized world.

Imagine if Roosevelt or any other US president had encouraged the population to embrace, understand and submit to imperial Japan or Nazi Germany?

Why are we still allowing our “leadership” to do the same when it comes to mohammedism?

You know if Obama wins he is fortunate at is appears his supporters (including those in the media) are using his own failures as the benchmark to measure his success. He gets to essentially run against his own failings while pretending they are not. Incredible.

At first I thought this feature was kinda comical.. but after reading this year’s entries – its actually kind of sad we have this Amateur in Chief in charge.

Of course, this bastard seems to have inherited just about everything…never did one damn thing on his own.

…Obama actually has a government website set up to advertise these “free” phones, and that until a couple of days ago, the government site was calling these phones “Obama phones” and prominently featured a big photo of a grinning Obama making a phone gesture with his hand.

Anyone who knows me from my posts here knows that I am not an Obama supporter or sympathizer, but these rumors about the “Obama Phone” are just that, rumors.

And those government websites you mentioned, sorry, but they are not owned or operated by the government and I’m surprised Professor Jacobson and Patheos didn’t research this story more closely before posting it.

I personally know several low-income seniors who have participated in the Safelink free cell-phone program since 2008, before Obama was elected. They do not receive any texts from the government, especially the Obama administrations asking for donations.

The Free Obama Phone: Real or Urban Legend?
The official word from the Lifeline free cell phone experts.

Since the day Barack Obama was inaugurated, the term “The Obama Phone” has persisted. People say Obama is redistributing the wealth by starting a program that gives free cell phones – Obama phones – to the poor. Detractors of both President Obama and of the government’s long-standing phone assistance program have fought over this claim since 2009 with each side mudslinging “facts” at each other.

FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net is going to clear this subject up once and for all with the most detailed account of the facts that you will find anywhere. When you next have a discussion on this topic, just give those on the other side the link to this page.

Is the government giving out free cell phones?

Yes. This part is true. They fund low end cell phones plans, and offset some of the cost of landline phones. The programs that authorize the phone distribution program are called Lifeline Assistance and Lifeline Link-Up. Lifeline Assistance helps pay monthly phone bills and Lifeline Link-Up helps pay the initial outlay for the phone and installation. The two programs are often lumped together and simply called Lifeline.

These Lifeline cell phones are delivered through relatively new, government-approved cell phone companies like Safelink Wireless, Assurance Wireless and Reachout Wireless, among others. These companies were spun of off larger prepaid cell phone companies to specialize in the Lifeline program.

Did Obama start the free phones program?

The cell phone distribution program did begin in 2008, the year Obama was elected president, but that is a coincidence. Let’s look more closely at the facts.

Notice that earlier we said Link-Up helps fund “installation.” What installation does a cell phone have? None. So why is installation part of Link-Up, which is under the Lifeline program umbrella? Because, the whole thing began back in 1996 when the Federal Communications Commission authorized the programs for landline phones. At that time it provided discounts on landline phones only, for obvious reasons.

To this day the government provides discounts on landline phones for financially disadvantaged people in the United States and U.S. territories. The Link-Up portion helps with the installation and the Lifeline Assistance part helps with the monthly bills, to the tune of roughly ten dollars a month.

So, the subsidization of phones began under President Clinton, and has continued under Presidents Bush and Obama.

Over that time, the usage of cell phones rose and the costs came down. Assuming one believes in the Lifeline program in the first place, and remembering that the FCC has mandated the program, it only makes sense to expand the phone assistance program to include cell phones. So, in 2008 the first application of this program for mobile phones began when a company called Tracfone started their Safelink Wireless service in Tennessee.
Aha, some say, that’s the same year Obama was elected! Well, that’s true. But the service in Tennessee was launched three months prior to Obama being elected. And that means the discussion and approval of the extension of the program occurred under President Bush’s watch.

The Bush Phone, anyone?

How did the Obama Phone rumors start?

Just how did this “Obama Phone” rumor get started anyway? Back around early 2009, emails began circulating that called the free cell phone program the Obama Phone. And you know what happens when emails start getting passed around — few people verify them, and just simply forward them to everyone in their contact list. And the people who forward them believe that Barack Obama has socialist tendencies, so there was a willing audience. Here is just one sample email:

FW: Obamaphone… no joke!!
I had a former employee call me earlier today inquiring about a job, and at the end of the conversation he gave me his phone number. I asked the former employee if this was a new cell phone number and he told me yes this was his “Obama phone.” I asked him what an “Obama phone” was and he went on to say that welfare recipients are now eligible to receive (1) a FREE new phone and (2) approx 70 minutes of FREE minutes every month. I was a little skeptical so I Googled it and low and behold he was telling the truth. TAX PAYER MONEY IS BEING REDISTRIBUTED TO WELFARE RECIPIENTS FOR FREE CELL PHONES. This program was started earlier this year. Enough is enough, the ship is sinking and it’s sinking fast. The very foundations that this country was built on are being shaken. The age old concepts of God, family, and hard work have flown out the window and are being replaced with “Hope and Change” and “Change we can believe in.”

Variations of these emails persist to this day. Like President Obama or not, they are simply false.

Who qualifies?

The free cell phones only go to those who qualify for the program under the exact same eligibility requirements that have been in effect since 1996. An applicant is generally eligible if they are at or below 135-150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (depending upon the state in which they live), or if they already participate in one of many public assistance programs such as Medicaid, food stamps, energy assistance, public housing and others.

Nothing about the Lifeline eligibility has changed since President Clinton’s days. Nothing has changed since President Bush’s days.

Who pays for the phones?

There’s another running argument about if the phones are or are not paid for by taxpayers. Yes and no, it depends how you look at it.

The money actually comes from a small fee added to most people’s monthly phone bills, called the Universal Service Fund fee. For a complete discussion of this, please read, “Do Taxpayers Pay for Government Cell Phones for the Poor?”

And it’s important to note that it does not cost any more to provide cell phones to people than it does landline. The government subsidizes both equally. In fact, landlines are often more expensive because the Link-Up portion is not always required for cell phones, depending upon the state.

Had to go with his attack on free speech in defense of islam.

The US Embassy in Manila issued a security alert for unspecified threats against Americans and US interests. Several other Western countries issued their own alerts, for fear that their citizens might get caught up in an attack against Americans.

Weren’t we supposed to be all buddy-buddy with the muslims after Obama became President? That’s not working out so well, is it?

I HAD to go with #3 myself…

The enemies of liberty are artful and insidious. A counterfeit steals her dress, imitates her manner, forges her signature, assumes her name. But the real name of the deceiver is Licentiousness. Such is her effrontery, that she will charge liberty to her face with imposture; and she will, with shameless front, insist that herself alone is the genuine character, and that herself alone is entitled to the respect, which the genuine character deserves. With the giddy and undiscerning, on whom a deeper impression is made by dauntless impudence than by modest merit, her pretensions are often successful. She receives the honors of liberty, and liberty herself is treated as a traitor and an usurper.

James Wilson, Delivered on the Fourth of July, 1788, at the procession formed at Philadelphia to celebrate the adoption of the Constitution of the United States…
