Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on September 30, 2012 by Allahpundit

A two-track strategy for Team Mitt this morning as the countdown to the first presidential debate begins. One: Send Paul Ryan over to “Fox News Sunday” to speak directly to conservatives, as part of his new mission to reassure the right that the campaign is where it needs to be at the moment. Two: Send Chris Christie over to ABC, NBC, and CBS to make the pitch to moderates, especially blue-collar moderates in the wake of Romney’s “47 percent” remarks.

Meanwhile, appearing for the Democrats, it’ll be Plouffe and Axelrod. As usual. The line-up via WaPo:

NBC’s Meet the Press: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie; White House senior adviser David Plouffe; Ralph Reed, Faith and Freedom Coalition; former Gov. Ed Rendell (D-PA); Katty Kay, BBC; Chuck Todd, NBC

CBS’ Face the Nation: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie; Newt Gingrich; Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN); Larry Sabato, University of Virginia; Robert Shrum, Republican strategist; Bob Woodward, Washington Post; Mark Zandi, Moody Analytics; Michelle Rhee, former DC Chancellor of Schools; Hedrick Smith, journalist

ABC’s This Week: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie; White House senior adviser David Plouffe; former Mississippi governor Haley Barbour; former Vermont governor Howard Dean; Donna Brazile, Democratic strategist; Matthew Dowd, political strategist; Maggie Haberman, Politico

Fox News Sunday: Republican vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)

CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ); Obama Campaign senior adviser David Axelrod; Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-MD); Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO); Alex Castellanos, Republican consultant; Celinda Lake, Democratic strategist; Dana Bash, CNN

Interesting choice of Michelle Rhee, former DC Chancellor of Schools, on CBS. “Won’t Back Down” and the Chicago teacher strike are making headway. (If you watched “Waiting For Superman” then Rhee will be familiar to you.) Rhee may be a Democrat, but she gets it on education reform and teacher unions. I expect some push back on her comments.

Ironically, I imagine with the Libya and Fast and Furious material out there, Ploufe and Axelrod will want to spend their time talking about domestic issues like their myth that Romney is going to raise everyone’s taxes except the rich and going to raise taxes on current medicare and social security recipients and destroy the entitlement programs of course etc. etc. Mitt’s team will likely push on the foreign fiascos.

Of course Team Obama will claim that Mitt is politicizing foreign affairs and ignoring what everyone is really interested in which is Mitt’s disasterous domestic meat axing. Its nonsense of course but these MSM show people won’t question it.

If this last 2 weeks leaves any doubt in your mind about the criminally biased liberal media, I suggest you’re not paying attention. The days where we were all commenting about The Israeli PM being snubbed, the CBS radio news on the hours played it all down by saying they spend 20 minutes on the phone together and were in complete agreement. That show of solidarity sure didn’t extend to the US Ambassador to the UN who attended DinnerJackets speech and skipped the Israeli PM.

They don’t even mention anything about Mitt Romney unless it’s in the context of, “How is he ever going to come from so far behind in the polls?”

This has all the feel of when I was deployed last time and the overseas news we got in the lead up to the 08 election talked about obama as if he were already president.

I don’t hate much, but I hate the media. Germany of the 30-40s era was not any worse than these agents of misinformation and deceit.

Plouffe may get a Fast & Furious question on ABC, due to tonight’s Univision report and ABC’s connection to Univision’s main news anchor, Jorge Ramos. ABC released excerpts of the report on Saturday, so someone at the network is paying attention, though I’d have more faith in the topic getting mentioned if Jake Tapper instead of Steffi was hosting this morning.

RCP is carrying an article by Pat Caddell this morning- maybe the context of the speech? but damn- reading Pat Caddell is almost as painful as listening to him! Ton’s of information, but it is presented in the most disjointed fashion. You can tell he’s angry bordering on frantic. One thing I found a little irritating was his rant on how bad the Romney campaign has been in not making a point of calling out the media on all of their lies and cover ups. Romney would have been branded a huge, whiner crybaby by the very same media! It’s not realistic to think that Romney has enough of a bully pulpit to expose the media’s lies. FOX is helpful, but even they sit on their hands far too much.

— Sep. 30 8:42 AM EDT
*********************

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Five weeks to Election Day, President Barack Obama is within reach of the 270 electoral votes needed to win a second term. Republican Mitt Romney’s path to victory is narrowing.

To overtake Obama, Romney would need to quickly gain the upper hand in nearly all of the nine states where he and Obama are competing the hardest.

Polls show the president with a steady lead in many of them as Romney looks to shift the dynamics of the race, starting with their first debate Wednesday in Denver.

“We’d rather be us than them,” says Jennifer Psaki, an Obama spokeswoman.

But Romney’s political director, Rich Beeson, insists, “You still have an incumbent who’s going to have a hard time getting over 50 percent in a lot of these states.”

If the election were held today, an Associated Press analysis shows Obama would win at least 271 electoral votes, with likely victories in crucial Ohio and Iowa along with 19 other states and the District of Columbia. Romney would win 23 states for a total of 206.

To oust the Democratic incumbent, Romney would need to take up-for-grabs Florida, Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Virginia, which would put him at 267 votes, and upend Obama in either Ohio or Iowa.

The AP analysis isn’t meant to be predictive. Rather, it is intended to provide a snapshot of a race that until recently has been stubbornly close in the small number of the most contested states.(More……….)

Caddell has been on Ricochet’s main podcast multiple times in the past 6-8 months. He’s always like that. He is very impatient.

I think Romney is saving it for the first debate. Reagan swung the election in the final week when there was only one debate on October 28th (VDH at NRO had a column in the past week on this). It may be an essential strategy because whatever Romney does, the press mis-reports it. This does not excuse the rest of the GPO including the fat nj boy.

Ok. I *hope* Romney is saving it for the first debate.

Economic Preview

Sept. 30, 2012, 8:00 a.m. EDT
U.S. job growth, manufacturing grow soft
Hiring likely weak in September as key part of economy pulls back
*****************************************************************

The state of U.S. manufacturers will also receive fresh scrutiny via the latest survey of executives by the Institute for Supply Management.

Looking for work

The employment report on Friday is projected to show a net increase of 130,000 jobs in September, up from 96,000 in August, according to a MarketWatch survey of economists. And the unemployment rate is seen edging up to 8.2% from 8.1%.

Yet the working-age population in the U.S. grows on average by at least 100,000 a month, so September’s jobs report isn’t shaping up to be a particularly good one. The economy would need to add about 250,000 jobs a month over several years to reduce the jobless rate to precession levels or around 6% or less.

Such a sharp acceleration in hiring, however, shows no signs of occurring. If anything, businesses appear to be putting off hiring plans and some executive say they could wait until next year.

I believe networks keep booking McCain to remind people how old and doddering he would have been as President had he been elected in 2008. It’s a other subtle pro-Obama tactic. Of course, McCain is still in love with the media so he won’t turn them down.

I wish they would get Mike Rogers on all these shows to blast Obama on Benghazi.

at least they fired the company, the dems continue to use ACORN (by another name)

If Romney loses, it’s time for the TEA party take an axe to the whole GOP.

It won’t matter at that point. 4 more years of Obama will guarantee that a non-Democrat will never win the WH again. The moocher voters will skyrocket even higher and when he unconstitutionally grants amnesty to 20 plus million illegals, we’re done. And most of the over 1 million third world legal immigrants that come here annually (with every relative imaginable) tend to vote Democratic.

All you can do is prepare.

Chris Wallace can be the stupid question king of the world.

Does he think his audience is that dumb?

Speakup on September 30, 2012 at 9:42 AM

McCain!! Who keeps booking him? He is over the hill, last election cycle’s loser.

steveracer on September 30, 2012 at 9:25 AM

It’s the media’s choice. They want to keep reminding the public that the GOP is nothing but stammering old white men.

And McCain has too big an ego to decline. Man, am I going to miss Kyl. McCain should be the AZ senator who should be retiring.

Hey Crowley, Gregory, Schieffer, Stephanopoulos, Maddow, Scarborough, for some reason I keep hearing a familiar voice whispering in my ear this morning.

It is saying simply one word – “War”

Wait until people realize that Obama has surrendered Benghazi to AQ

Distinguish the two situations.

GOP: One employee of one company–the employee has been fired by the company, and the company has been fired by the GOP, and the company isn’t operating nationwide. The problem has been identified, acknowledged, and contained.

Dems: Many workers of a national organizer where the conduct was always denied and never addressed unless the authorities got involved.

The contrast is unbelievable.

Comments, trolls?

My reaction is that the GOP should never have anything to do with the organization again. Voting integrity is sancrosanct. With conservatives, cheating is abhorred. With liberals, cheating is applauded.

Paul Ryan told CW that Mitt plans on major foreign policy address, probably after this first debate.

Can’t believe that Juan still saying Susan Rice was reporting all they knew at the time.
On second thought, I guess I do.
Buuwahaha.

There has been a lot of discussion about the media on FNS today.
