Time: WH sticking to “spontaneous” attack story, kind of

posted at 10:01 am on September 28, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

With their narrative on the sacking of the Benghazi consulate rapidly disintegrating, the White House has apparently tried to graft it onto the emerging reality of a successful al-Qaeda attack on the anniversary of 9/11.  Time Magazine’s Massimo Calabresi got the latest spin from the Obama administration, updating an article that was ironically headlined “Did Obama Spin the Benghazi Attack?”

The perpetrators behind the assault that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012, had been looking for an opportunity to attack U.S. facilities in the region for some time, according to an Obama Administration official familiar with the latest intelligence

However, the Administration continues to believe the attack was not pre-planned, but rather was the result of extremists seizing the opportunity presented by protests in neighboring Egypt against an American-made anti-Islamic video.

Members of the Benghazi al-Qaeda affiliate, Ansar al Sharia, “Saw the events in Cairo and took it upon themselves to seize that opportunity to do something,” the Administration official says. “They may have intended for some time to attack U.S. facilities, but they did so at the time they did to take advantage of Cairo.”

Er … sure.  At least the White House now acknowledges that AQ had planned an attack on the Benghazi consulate and the American diplomatic presence “for some time,” a point of information that would never have come to light had CNN not found Stevens’ journal in the still-unsecured wreckage of the facility.  Stevens had warned the administration of the dangers, and as yet no evidence has arisen that State or the White House took any action to address his concerns.

But let’s consider the timing of this attack while musing on this latest spin.  The attack took place on the anniversary of 9/11, and conducted by a terror network that puts great stock in symbolic use of dates.  How likely is it that they just happened to discover a protest outside the US consulate — a protest which Libya says never actually took place anyway — and responded without any preparation at all in an attack with heavy weapons, exploiting it as cover?  I’d say it’s much more likely that AQ knew that protests would be taking place on 9/11 in places like Cairo, either at their direction or in cooperation with other extremist groups, and used it as cover for the attack on Benghazi.

This new spin is absurd, as is the White House attempt to rescue Susan Rice from the credibility destruction she incurred five days later:

UPDATE: Regarding Rice’s statements on Sept. 16, the spokesperson for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Erin Pelton, says, “During her appearances on the Sunday talk shows September 16, 2012, Ambassador Rice’s comments were prefaced at every turn with a clear statement that an FBI investigation was underway that would provide the definitive accounting of the events that took place in Benghazi.  At every turn Ambassador Rice provided–and said she was providing–the best information and the best assessment that the Administration had at the time, based on what was provided to Ambassador Rice and other senior U.S. officials by the U.S. intelligence community.”

Balderdash.  While she may have left herself a rhetorical out, Rice clearly communicated that the administration had no reason to believe that the Benghazi attack was terrorist-related, when four days earlier the Obama administration designated it as such.  Either the White House lied to Rice, or she lied to the media.  Either way, Rice should be tendering her resignation now.

Gabriel Malor wonders what it takes to get the media interested in lies, incompetence, and scandal in the Obama administration:

The President boldly vowed that the perpetrators — he declined to call them terrorists at the time — would be brought to justice. To that end, he called in the FBI. More than a week later, the FBI flew a team to Tripoli, but that is as far as they got. They have not traveled to Benghazi. They have not examined the scene. They have not collected evidence. They have not interviewed the people the Libyans have arrested. It has been fifteen days since the attack.

Why is this not a scandal yet?

I’ll be honest with you. It is scandalous that a U.S. ambassador was killed abroad. It is even more scandalous that this ambassador was provided almost no security at one of the most dangerous assignments on the planet for the flimsiest of excuses. The President should be answering for those scandals. But the fact that his administration then misled the American people? That the law enforcement Obama has tapped to lead the investigation hasn’t even managed to complete the most obvious of tasks? That is beyond scandal. That is a disgrace.

So is the national media that thus far seems almost entirely unconcerned with the string of lies pushed by Obama and his administration in response to the first successful terrorist attack on an American diplomatic facility in 14 years.

The change I made is because it is from that notion from which I proceed.

The MSM can’t win if we, as individuals, make our case among family and friends.

Reagan said something to the effect that all good things start at the supper table.

It’s impossible, even for all of us together, to take on the MSM as a whole. But that machine can still be destroyed if we do it one piece at a time.

Years of warning about embassy security preceded Libya attack
*************************************************************

State Department acknowledged as recently as February it lacked funding for some security improvements

UPDATED 11:50 AM EDT, September 12, 2012
*****************************************

The way U.S. embassies and consulates protect their staffs in volatile locations has raised several red flags in Congress, among watchdogs and even an outside commission in recent years.

The concerns came into sharp focus with the death in Libya of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens in an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, as well as an attack Tuesday on the U.S. embassy in Cairo.

While the State Department has responded to some of the criticisms leveled by congressional oversight bodies and its own internal watchdog, its Diplomatic Security (DS) office recently acknowledged it lacked the funding for some recommended improvements, such as security training, and was instead looking for workarounds.

“We cannot sufficiently meet the additional training recommendations outlined in the Secretary’s QDDR (quadrennial review). Therefore, DS is aggressively pursuing on-line alternatives, e.g., distance learning of FACT lessons minus the hard skills (i.e., weapons familiarization and driver’s training) to increase training capabilities,” the department candidly acknowledged in a

February performance evaluation report.

http://www.state.gov/s/d/rm/rls/perfrpt/2011performancesummary/html/191458.htm

In response to Stevens’s death at the hands of an angry mob outside the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that he has “directed my administration to increase our security at diplomatic posts around the world.” U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said some 50 Marines are being sent to Libya to reinforce security at U.S. diplomatic facilities.

“There is no higher priority than protecting our men and women wherever they serve,” said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Her department identified embassy and personnel security as one of its major management challenges in its 2012 budget and priorities report.

One of the biggest concerns raised in recent years has been the quality and capabilities of private security contractors hired to protect embassy staffs.

The congressionally chartered Commission on Wartime Contracting issued a

strong warning in 2009,

http://www.wartimecontracting.gov/index.php/pressroom/pressreleases/104-nr12-federal-law-forces-bad-choices

saying the State Department’s reliance on lowest-priced contractors was jeopardizing security.

You need to accept that the media is not on your side. They have thrown in for Obama with all they have. Another thing we all to accept is it will take a some time and determination to recover from what Obama has done. Reagan came in under terrible conditions that pale in comparison to what we face but he also had a democrat congress to wrestle with. Do not buy what the media is selling.

Obama won by 6% in 2008 by running on Bush fatigue and hope. 2010 saw the reaction to his methods and it was historic. His base is his only support. They are loud and few. This won’t be close.

Calm down! Our ground game in the battleground states is way ahead of where we were in 2008. I’ve read encouraging reports of what is happening on the ground in Ohio, Florida and Virginia. Democrat registration is down in ALL of the battleground states. The media is trying to cover this up and create a bandwagon effect and dispirit us. Don’t worry about the propaganda polls. Most conservatives are pretty used to media bias – and it only energizes us more. You should really check out the Rasmussen party affiliation record:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/archive/mood_of_america_archive/partisan_trends/summary_of_party_affiliation

Check it out. Their numbers correctly predicted the turnout in 2004, and correctly predicted the Democrat waves of 2006 and 2008. All through 2011 and 2012, the Republican Party has once again taken the lead in party affiliation, and it is not expected to change significantly before November.

BREAKING NEWS: JIMMY HOFFA STILL DEAD, NOBODY CARES…

SWalker on September 28, 2012 at 11:23 AM

The campaign theme repeated over and over for the DNC convention Sept 4-6 was that Obama has “decimated al Qaeda and killed Osama bin Laden.”

On Sept 16 Susan Rice went on all the Sunday morning shows and proclaimed “We have decimated al Qaeda.”

On Sept 23 Barak Obama appeared on 60 minutes and said “I said that we’d go after al Qaeda. They’ve been decimated in the Fatah.”

The fact that on Sept 11 al Qaeda destroyed our embassy and its secret annex in Libya and murdered our people doesn’t fit with the campaign theme. To fit the events to the campaign theme Susan Rice has to interpret them differently: “What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, prompted by the video.”

One may wonder if Obama and his administration is so convinced by their own campaign propaganda that in the weeks leading up to Sept 11 they truly believed they had nothing to fear from al Qaeda in Benghazi. One thing is clear though; they have no explanation for how a decimated al Qaeda could so thoroughly decimate us in Benghazi and so must keep spinning a more complex web of lies.

weaselyone on September 28, 2012 at 10:57 AM

Yes, she has done yeoman’s work on that. However, that was one reporter on one network. In the Bush administration, it would have been teams of reporters on every network. Rush would have been able to play a media montage of Andrea Mitchell NBC News, Caty Corrick, Sam Donaldson, Tom Brokaw, etc saying the exact same phrase derogatory to the president. The story would have been the lead every night on the news. Wolf Blitzer would breathlessly exclaim, “The Obama administration further pummeled by corruption charges in the Fast & Furious scandal”.

There has been nothing like this despite a target rich environment: The New Black Panthers voter intimidation case, Fast & Furious, the back room deals on Obama Care, the dithering on the surge in Afghanistan, the hobbling ROE’s in the war on terror, the harassment cases in Nappy Napolitano’s TSA, the deals with the drug companies and insurance companies during the Obmacare debates, the refusal to follow the War Powers Act (would have had them apoplectic if Bush had done this), now the Libya thing. … and that’s just after about 30 seconds of thinking about it, there are a host of scandals I’ve left off.

Instead of scandal stories, the alphabet channels are instead leading with stories that ask what Obama needs to win, how well he is doing in their cooked polls. Nothing negative, none of the time seems to be the order of the day relative to Obama and his administration.

It is no wonder that trust in the media is in the 30′s with Republicans and Independents. That it is 60% with democrats is just because they like the favorable coverage. That means that even 40% of democrats get the fact that the media, while it may be on their side is not telling the truth.

Funny that it was Time magazine reporting. I was just listening to Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass on the radio talking about how when Jay Carney worked for Time magazine he wrote puff pieces about Chicago and once described former Chicago Mayor Richard M Daley as “watching over Chicago like Andy of Mayberry” and while Kass can’t stomach Carney, he can see why Carney can stand there in the WH briefing room and spew to support lies like this. The Dooms wouldda had Bush’s impeachment vote the day after, with no investigation, had this occurred on his watch and had he so royally screwed it up. There comes a point when the reluctance of the main stream media to report accurately on the failings of the Obama administration and, in particular, Obama, becomes rank collusion to obfuscate and deny.

The main stream media has reached that point.

In so doing, the main stream media has surrendered any pretense of possessing either journalistic integrity or objectivity. The bias and prejudice practiced by those employed in the main stream media is rank and rife, and, has stripped those organizations of any semblance of credibility, which renders them useless in terms of being worth of the term news source.

It’s not a scandal because the media eat Obama’s sh*t and mistake it for Beluga caviar. May they all suffocate from what they consume.

This is also a scandal, from both sides, and from Obama.

Hence the reason behind my poor little insignificant blog…

The wilderness of Mirrors

The Wilderness of Mirrors is the view points of a single Musician from Southern California with regards to the current status of American politics and the Mainstream Media’s malfeasance in its coverage of the politics and other events of the day.

Traditionally the Wilderness of Mirrors refers to a psychological condition afflicting members of the covert intelligence community who find themselves no longer capable of trusting anyone and suspecting everyone of being part of some covert intelligence operation.

Unlike paranoia the Wilderness of Mirrors is not mental disorder caused by chemical imbalances, but a deep and abiding mental state resulting from their occupation.

This Wilderness of Mirrors is the result of watching politicians and Mainstream Media figures routinely and intentional deceive the American public on a daily basis.

Obama falsely believes that he is omnipotent and omniscient.

He, the charlatan, called Romney a “sly fox” in Ohio yesterday.

The media gives him a free pass on everything he does, or does not do.

May he and the media lose their jobs and be mocked out of town, for good, so that such hoaxes never be repeated upon the land and the world.

Every news on the hour I accidentally heard used the same. I heard it accidentally because I didn’t get there in time to shut it off as I usually do. I have been doing this since 2000 election campaign when they only told what Gore was doing for the day but wouldn’t say a word about George Bush’s itinerary for the day. It is such a pain but keeps me from having to hear the lispings of our dear leader.

So is the national media that thus far seems almost entirely unconcerned with the string of lies pushed by Obama and his administration in response to the first successful terrorist attack on an American diplomatic facility in 14 years.

Ed, this is why Romney or any other GOP candidate has no chance. If the nation is not informed of this, they cannot be outraged. Most are quite willing to get their info from Brian Williams, Scott Pelle,et.al. The Assoc Press controls what stories go out to the local papers and to Yahoo etc.. All of this reminds me of the old ABC mini series Amerika. Not so much the series but the accompanying novel which went into more detail about how the conquering Soviets maintained control. It was through media and education and assuring enough people that their lives really wouldn’t change much in a day to day sense.

Mine isn’t FOX, but they do the same. So do they two IDIOTS who come on after Rush. One is supposed to be conservative and the other a liberal woman. They are so far behind in factual news, it isn’t funny. I always send them texts to try checking out HotAir.

At the time of night I listen, there’s Jerry Doyle, whose show is prerecorded, so it’s a rehash of the previous day’s news, with his decidedly libertarian interpretations. I can take him or leave him, but he’s the only thing that comes through at that hour without a boatload of static. It’s something to listen to and that’s about all.

scalleywag on September 28, 2012 at 1:00 PM

Why is this not a scandal?

If the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor and both Roosevelt and a sympathetic press reported it as a “bump in the road” and “unfortunate minor misunderstanding” the declaration of war would have been delayed for months.

Here we have a murder of an ambassador and three others and it is called a “bump in the road” and a “minor misunderstanding” exacerbated by a prejudiced movie- by Obama (he has already blamed a film maker-and had the film maker arrested on some trumped-up charge)and the press is in his pocket “like so much loose change”-to quote from ‘The Godfather’.

Let’s talk intelligence of U.S. Intelligence for a moment, though I firmly believe USI can and will do whatever it’s tasked to do — this comes from the top — the White House and State Department that have been watching far too many Arab Spring commercials together.

Christopher Stevens. By every account, an exceptional person and diplomat. Someone who went far beyond the extra mile to establish legitimate, human, cooperative relationships with the Libyan population. He was a bridge between cultures. Well liked, respected, and genuinely committed.

So, he’s one person you would imagine, if you weren’t thinking clearly, would be in less danger than some overbearing bureaucrat who was only in it for the glamor, got his post from writing a big check to the Obama campaign – you know, one of those.

That is, if you buy the Springtime & Flowers theme. Obama’s ridiculous, naive, sophomoric notion that radical Islamists only need to see an Obama smile to come to their senses, and to the White House for BBQ and a cold brewskie.

What he didn’t seem to grasp, and still doesn’t, was that there are people in Libya who do not want the West to be their friends. They do not want any king of spring, unless it’s the spring in an ammo clip, or the springing of an ambush.

The fact that Christopher Stevens was so effective at crossing boundaries made him more of a target, to certain people. He didn’t require less protection (it does not have to be bulletproof cars and a phalanx of Special Ops guys – there are ways to protect without an obvious show of muscle), but rather more protection, because he was so well liked.

I know. Maybe we’re wasting our breath. But, let the protests continue. Maybe somebody, somewhere, in the lame-stream media will wake up one morning, look in the mirror and say, “What the hell am I doing?”

Not true. Mitt is the only one who seems to want to stay comfortable in a corner, hoping someone will happen upon him and notice him by chance. I saw this behavior when he first announced, I saw it during the full primary season, and I’m seeing it now.

Today, just today, someone asked Romney about the Libya situation, he said, “I don’t want to say anything.” None of the other GOP rivals acted like this. If they were going to down, they went down fighting, which is what you are supposed to do! Mitt’s not even trying to fight. He’s still stuck on “Obama is such a nice guy”. Earth to Romney, NO CHICAGO POLITICIAN IS A NICE GUY! They are purposely ruthless and corrupt!

Romney needs to get with the program and he’ll be looking at that “nice guy” standing in his spot on Jan. 20th.

I especially enjoyed this spin from Yahoo News yesterday

Asked about the evolving administration line, the anonymous source said that “confusion and misinformation always helps an operational response. How much is subjective, but it is always good not to let your opponent have insight into what you know and don’t know,”

um…right. It’s the Pee Wee Herman defense about blaming the video for a known terrorist attack: ‘I meant to do that!’
I presume that was a trial balloon for that meme.

If Romney won’t directly confront the lies regarding Benzaghi-gate, then the Super Pacs should step in — including the part about Obama jet-setting to Vegas rather than confronting and managing a terrorist attack on September 11.

A commercial this weekend would be nice.

“Why is this not a scandal?”

Because Obama voters don’t care one whit about this, nor does the President and his administration and the MSM has also confirmed that this just isn’t that big of a deal.

These elements allow this administration to get away with anything.

Are we accusing Obama of (A)indifference, (B) incompetence, or (C) genuine bad faith?

A. Obama/state, etc. had specific intelligence about a time, date and location of an attack but simply didnt care. (Hard to believe. What would be the motive?)

B. Obama/state etc. had specific intelligence about a time, date and location of the attack but bungled any attempt at pre-empting it.(Possible, but give me some hard evidence)

C. Obama/state etc. had specific intelligence about a time, date and location of the attack but wanted/allowed it to happen. (Absurd)

I will also offer a final choice, the one im leaning towards:

D: Force majeure.

Like a frivolous lawsuit, we want to blame somebody because something bad happened. Think- the Left’s reaction to Katrina and 9/11.

Also, all this discussion about whether the incident was “spontaneous” or “planned” is like wondering whether your cousin’s rapist stopped at the BP or the Exxon before he stopped at her house.

White House completes a full 180 on its “spontaneous attack” story.

It is now, as of Friday evening, a “deliberate and organized terrorist attack,” says James Clapper, Director of the Office of National Intelligence. As if we didn’t know before.

So let’s review:

On September 14, three days after the attacks, President Barack Obama’s press secretary, Jay Carney, said the United States had no evidence the Benghazi attack was planned.

On September 16, Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said preliminary information suggested the attacks were not premeditated and were protests against the anti-Muslim film that provoked demonstrations in Egypt.

On September 18, Carney again: “Our belief based on the information we had was that it was the video that caused the unrest in Cairo and the video that — and the unrest in Cairo that helped — that precipitated some of the unrest in Benghazi and elsewhere.”

September 19, Carney: “Based on the information that we had at the time and have to this day, we do not have evidence that it was premeditated.”

But that same day, at a congressional hearing, Matthew Olsen, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, part of the National Intelligence Director’s office, labeled the assaults a “terrorist attack on our embassy.”

September 20, Carney: “self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack.”

And now today. National Intelligence Director’s Office Friday night press dump acknowledges what everyone knows: “deliberate and organized terrorist attack.” They’re just not saying “al-Qaeda” yet.

And from the media tonight: “Whatever.”

de rigueur on September 28, 2012 at 7:49 PM

Ed,

Thing is, I believe you may be wasting your time with Time.

Jonathan S. Landay, an international correspondent with McClatchy Newspapers, has written a piece entitled:

“Intelligence office says it got Libya attack wrong, not White House”

In it, Jon points out that the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, has fallen on his sword, and he has taken the “hit” for providing bad intelligence to the White House (and Congress) back during the early days of the Benghazi story dust-up in the media.

WASHINGTON — Extremists from groups linked to al Qaida struck the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in a “deliberate and organized terrorist attack,” the top U.S. intelligence agency said Friday, as it took responsibility for the Obama administration’s initial claims that the deadly assault grew from a spontaneous protest against an anti-Islam video.

The unusual statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence appeared to have two goals: updating the public on the latest findings of the investigation into the assault, and shielding the White House from a political backlash over its original accounts.

“In the immediate aftermath (of the assault), there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo,” spokesman Sean Turner said in the statement. “We provided that initial assessment to executive branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly.”

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which coordinates and sets policies for the 16 other U.S. intelligence agencies, is led by retired Air Force Gen. James Clapper, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in August 2010.
. . . .

So, the Administration now no longer needs to supply “evolution” stories to the many active members of the “knee-pad media.”

You know what? I think somebody just must have forgotten to send the “memo” to Massimo Calabresi, and politely suggest he pull that story. Or, maybe he got the memo and didn’t read it.

That’s all!

Hey look, it was a simple slip-up, and we should all be grateful that it now makes complete sense!

Poor guy must be embarrassed! Give him a break, huh?

I find this diplomatic mission impossible to comment on. These people were set up to be killed, counting them just as collateral damage in the reelection scheme of things. Of the three others unnamed killed, two were team 6 SEALS. Not one person in the entire world has ever sean this film, only some very bad over dubbed trailers. Al Jazerras writes that they doubt that the film even exists.

The Embassy is Souvenir land of the United States. Some 15 days since the attack and the FBI team can not get to the Embassy to investigate. What is stopping them? The country is helping, the area is open to the NEWS. We have every International right to go there. There are only two things that can stop them. (1) the DOJ and (2) The President.

Next to the lost lives, the biggest loss in this is the intelligence. The codes books, the lists, the total intelligence operations in the middle east. This put operations back by 10 years and thousand of lives.

If history teaches us our future, then nothing will come of this. The same as F & F with executive privilege, Birth Certificate, College Records, Passport.
