Time: WH sticking to “spontaneous” attack story, kind of

posted at 10:01 am on September 28, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

With their narrative on the sacking of the Benghazi consulate rapidly disintegrating, the White House has apparently tried to graft it onto the emerging reality of a successful al-Qaeda attack on the anniversary of 9/11.  Time Magazine’s Massimo Calabresi got the latest spin from the Obama administration, updating an article that was ironically headlined “Did Obama Spin the Benghazi Attack?”

The perpetrators behind the assault that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012, had been looking for an opportunity to attack U.S. facilities in the region for some time, according to an Obama Administration official familiar with the latest intelligence

However, the Administration continues to believe the attack was not pre-planned, but rather was the result of extremists seizing the opportunity presented by protests in neighboring Egypt against an American-made anti-Islamic video.

Members of the Benghazi al-Qaeda affiliate, Ansar al Sharia, “Saw the events in Cairo and took it upon themselves to seize that opportunity to do something,” the Administration official says. “They may have intended for some time to attack U.S. facilities, but they did so at the time they did to take advantage of Cairo.”

Er … sure.  At least the White House now acknowledges that AQ had planned an attack on the Benghazi consulate and the American diplomatic presence “for some time,” a point of information that would never have come to light had CNN not found Stevens’ journal in the still-unsecured wreckage of the facility.  Stevens had warned the administration of the dangers, and as yet no evidence has arisen that State or the White House took any action to address his concerns.

But let’s consider the timing of this attack while musing on this latest spin.  The attack took place on the anniversary of 9/11, and conducted by a terror network that puts great stock in symbolic use of dates.  How likely is it that they just happened to discover a protest outside the US consulate — a protest which Libya says never actually took place anyway — and responded without any preparation at all in an attack with heavy weapons, exploiting it as cover?  I’d say it’s much more likely that AQ knew that protests would be taking place on 9/11 in places like Cairo, either at their direction or in cooperation with other extremist groups, and used it as cover for the attack on Benghazi.

This new spin is absurd, as is the White House attempt to rescue Susan Rice from the credibility destruction she incurred five days later:

UPDATE: Regarding Rice’s statements on Sept. 16, the spokesperson for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Erin Pelton, says, “During her appearances on the Sunday talk shows September 16, 2012, Ambassador Rice’s comments were prefaced at every turn with a clear statement that an FBI investigation was underway that would provide the definitive accounting of the events that took place in Benghazi.  At every turn Ambassador Rice provided–and said she was providing–the best information and the best assessment that the Administration had at the time, based on what was provided to Ambassador Rice and other senior U.S. officials by the U.S. intelligence community.”

Balderdash.  While she may have left herself a rhetorical out, Rice clearly communicated that the administration had no reason to believe that the Benghazi attack was terrorist-related, when four days earlier the Obama administration designated it as such.  Either the White House lied to Rice, or she lied to the media.  Either way, Rice should be tendering her resignation now.

Gabriel Malor wonders what it takes to get the media interested in lies, incompetence, and scandal in the Obama administration:

The President boldly vowed that the perpetrators — he declined to call them terrorists at the time — would be brought to justice. To that end, he called in the FBI. More than a week later, the FBI flew a team to Tripoli, but that is as far as they got. They have not traveled to Benghazi. They have not examined the scene. They have not collected evidence. They have not interviewed the people the Libyans have arrested. It has been fifteen days since the attack.

Why is this not a scandal yet?

I’ll be honest with you. It is scandalous that a U.S. ambassador was killed abroad. It is even more scandalous that this ambassador was provided almost no security at one of the most dangerous assignments on the planet for the flimsiest of excuses. The President should be answering for those scandals. But the fact that his administration then misled the American people? That the law enforcement Obama has tapped to lead the investigation hasn’t even managed to complete the most obvious of tasks? That is beyond scandal. That is a disgrace.

So is the national media that thus far seems almost entirely unconcerned with the string of lies pushed by Obama and his administration in response to the first successful terrorist attack on an American diplomatic facility in 14 years.

Most arrogant administration ever. Most people, when caught in a lie, at least try to backtrack even if they don’t apologize. This group doubles down on the lie.

Not mentioning who this was written about because I don’t want to make the comparison, but it could easily be describing Oblahblah.

His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.

Ray Charles could drive a Death Star through the holes in that story.

Susan Rice, if she wants to have any career left, should resign claiming she was lied to. She’s not going to survive a Senate hearing on her SoS nomination right now.

The question I have, is your priority, upon being convicted of bank fraud, as a Christian from the Middle East, to fraudulently create a movie that mocks Mohammed (the fink) and violate parole by using computers and uploading it to the internet? What’s really more tragic is how this really exposes that our nation is truly doomed because the general public either doesn’t know (or doesn’t care) about the gravity of what happened over there. Because early voting started in Iowa today. The MSM is to busy reporting on “How Obama pulled Ahead” from ABC news, or NBC news: “NBC News/Marist polls taken in nine battleground states show President Obama ahead in all.” or CBS: “Polls: Romney lagging in key states.”

And we thought the MSM meme that the race was over 2 weeks ago was bad.

This is what is called a self-fulfilling prophecy. Push-Polling from the media. They are finally starting to see the result that they have been pushing for for weeks. Rasmussen still has the race +1, but the narrative is set. Add in that the SuperPACs have to pay 10 times as much for TV ads now that we are within 60 days of the election, so it is even more difficult to get out a Pro-Romney message. Add in the free MSM advertising that the Obama camp is receiving. We are in serious trouble. 40% of Iowans will be voting early. The message as they head to the polls is that Romney is done. We are really in trouble because we have no answer for the MSM, far too large and powerful.

kingsjester on September 28, 2012 at 10:37 AM

The legacy media is being very careful. They don’t want to do anything that would effect the election…and the White House is counting on it.

d1carter on September 28, 2012 at 10:37 AM

I’m honestly just sitting here trying to wrap my mind around what the facts are proving.

I’m further bewildered by the fact that damn near half the voters in this country are ABSOLUTELY going to vote for Obama.

How is that possible?

kingsjester on September 28, 2012 at 10:38 AM

One reason it,s not a scandal .Even Fox news who broke the story will not say the Pres. lied .A word to Chris Wallace and the rest of you reporters at Fox.No the Pres and the rest of his people did not mislead the American people .They flat out lied and they knew 3 or 4 days before the attack it maybe coming and did nothing .4 people died.Gov. Romney you want to see your polls numbers go up?Then hold a news conference and say Mr Pres. you and your people knew a attack was possible and you did nothing 4 Americans died needlessly .You knew within hours after the attack it was Al Qaeda and still you continue to lie about it.Mr Pres you have tried to cover this up.You owe it to the American people and the families of the 4 dead Americans to tell the truth.Have you no shame Mr. Pres.

logman1 on September 28, 2012 at 10:39 AM

The MSM has done their work well, that’s for sure…there are absolutely NO standards for this president to live up to. They will literally cover for him for ANYTHING. Why should his administration even try to be truthful, or attempt to put out a coherent story? I just don’t know how you fight against corruption of this magnitude.

ellifint on September 28, 2012 at 10:39 AM

No no one died either,

FlaMurph on September 28, 2012 at 10:21 AM

technically speaking that not actually correct. Valarie Plame had atone time been a covert agent, she was pulled out of the field and put behind a desk because (her husband was a highly connected Ambassador) as it turned out, the one thing she excelled at, was getting all of her covert contacts killed.

SWalker on September 28, 2012 at 10:40 AM

weaselyone on September 28, 2012 at 10:28 AM

DanMan on September 28, 2012 at 10:41 AM

Obama simply didn’t have all the facts; the waters are muddied and you racists are trying to hurt him only for your political gain.

But we all know of a real scandal: That Watergate thingamajig that you Republicans keep trying to ignore. Really! It’s been only forty years, and you Cons keep trying to ignore it like it never happened?

How dare you point fingers!

Love,
The MSM

again u do not change early voters minds. part of that 47% that Romney won’t win over among the Democrats. Besides Dem’s registration is down across the board state by state. the voters on Nov 6 will decide Iowa and Romney will win it.

gracie on September 28, 2012 at 10:36 AM

It’s not about changing minds. It is about mobilizing the base and turning out voters. The Dem base is certainly more energized now then they were 2 months ago. I really do hope you are correct about the voters turning out on Nov 6 to give us the win, but call me skeptical in not believing that Romney has the time or the platform (MSM) to sway those voters. The MSM has been so effective at demoralizing the GOP that even I am concerned we won’t turn out for the election. Personally, I will walk across flaming coals with broken glass mixed in to vote against Obama. I just hope everyone else has that same passion, and I seriously question the American electorate’s resolve in light of the media coverage the last couple of weeks.

So is the national media that thus far seems almost entirely unconcerned with the string of lies pushed by Obama and his administration in response to the first successful terrorist attack on an American diplomatic facility in 14 years.

AQ or Iran could set off nuclear or dirty bombs in five or more of our cities at the same time and the LSM wouldn’t bother to ask this administration what they knew and when did they know it or anything having to do with its response failures.

“Nothing to see here, just move along, now.

Reason #1 to vote for Romney, at least the d@mn media will do their jobs if a Republican is in the White House.

Lily on September 28, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Whoever gets to those 7 surviving Marines who were ambushed by al-Qaeda, or to however many of the 35 U.S. diplomatic personnel whom they rescued and evacuated from Benghazi airport, will debunk this administration’s “spontaneous attack” lie in about the time it takes to say “b.s.”

The Reuters story, filed by Canadian journalist Hadeel Al-Shalchi, was a real story. She’s a professional, based in Tripoli, Libya, and she’s been covering the Middle East for Reuters from the uprising in Egypt and the Syrian civil war. (She’s Canadian, Muslim… and had no reason to invent this story. She names her sources: the eye-witness Captain al-Oeidi of the Libyan Shield Brigade that accompanied the Marine rescue squad, and Libyan Deputy Interior Minister Wanis al-Sharif. She picked up a bit of a following after filing that story, too.) Conveniently, she’s back in Canada where she’d easily be accessible to any American or Canadian journalist for details on her story.

But the rest is silence.

The media needs to be called out, phone calls, emails, letters to the editors of your local papers, social media.

As Sharyl Attkisson said on Twitter a few weeks ago – in this day and age, it is up to us, the public, to make them do their job.

Flora Duh on September 28, 2012 at 10:25 AM

Contact the companies who advertise with these media outlets and let them know you will not buy their product or service as long as they continue to advertise on a media outlet that will no longer report the truth.

Why do conservative complain so much about the old media instead of opening new news channels? Hire Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh, and Bill Whittle, maybe even Huckster to cater for the troglocons, and whatever other conservative entertainers of renown are out there, and 20-25% of the total auditory is pretty much guaranteed. It will also be mostly 30+ auditory, and that’s where most of the ad money is to be made.

It is obvious to me. I follow politics closely. The question is, is it obvious to the average independent voter that is going to decide this election?

The MSM memes are powerful, else we would not push back as hard as we do. Our complaints about the media are true, yes, but we only fight back because we know that the media is effective. We are losing the media fight. This article is a prime example. We have not a single person in the national media that has been able to make a coherent case against Obama’s Libya lies.

SWalker on September 28, 2012 at 10:49 AM

It’s been obvious for over four years now that the press will not report anything that casts Obama and his socialist/Progressives in a bad light. It doesn’t matter how deep the graft and corruption goes. It doesn’t matter how awful the economy is or how bankrupt the nation becomes. It doesn’t matter how brutally they suppress individual liberties and try to squelch free expression. It doesn’t even matter how many US ambassadors, DEA agents, military members, Mexican nationals, or inner city blacks are killed every day because of their feckless and dangerous operations. The Progressives and the US media have only one goal – getting Obama relected.

Now get off your asses, quit eyeooring, and do what needs to be done. Mitt Romney may not be the perfect Republican candidate, but he can sure as hell throw a monkey wrench into these bastards’ plans.

To show interest would endanger the re-election of their candidate. It’s as simple as that. There is no longer any question that the media has become nothing more than the communications directorate of the DNC.

For you idiot trolls infesting this group, I challenge you to find one news feature negative to this administration over the past 3 1/2 years that the alphabet channels have covered with the intensity they covered stories negative to the previous administration.

Obama knew he could get away with murder after that. And he has.
