Quotes of the day

posted at 8:41 pm on September 28, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Extremists from groups linked to al Qaida struck the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in a “deliberate and organized terrorist attack,” the top U.S. intelligence agency said Friday, as it took responsibility for the Obama administration’s initial claims that the deadly assault grew from a spontaneous protest against an anti-Islam video.

The unusual statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence appeared to have two goals: updating the public on the latest findings of the investigation into the assault, and shielding the White House from a political backlash over its original accounts.

“In the immediate aftermath (of the assault), there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo,” spokesman Sean Turner said in the statement. “We provided that initial assessment to executive branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly.”

***

On Sept. 12, the day after the attack, White House press secretary Jay Carney was asked whether “the attack in Benghazi was planned and premeditated.” “It’s too early for us to make that judgment,” Carney said.

The next day, Sept. 13, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland subtly pointed to a YouTube video as possibly creating a motivation for the attack. …

We certainly don’t know, we don’t know otherwise,” said Carney. “You know, we have no information to suggest that it was a preplanned attack. The unrest we’ve seen around the region has been in reaction to a video that Muslims, many Muslims, find offensive. And while the violence is reprehensible and unjustified, it is not a reaction to the 9/11 anniversary that we know of or to U.S. policy.”

***

What did they know and when did they know it?

This Washington cliché has become the question of the hour, or at least it would be if the mainstream media could feign interest in the terrorist attack against the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and anti-American rioting throughout the Middle East and North Africa. …

Never mind that a fourth-grader could see that the Libya attack was anything but a spontaneous riot over an Internet video the administration, following the lead of the Islamists, has elevated to the genre of “movie.” Protesters generally don’t carry RPGs or use mortars, for starters. …

Also, where did Rice get her very detailed information about the attack in Libya? She referred to the attackers as “a small handful of heavily armed mobsters” who merely took advantage of a growing protest over the video, a protest that now appears never to have occurred, as was reported three days before her appearances. The administration is careful to point out that Rice couched everything she said as being the best assessment at the time. Fine. But where did that assessment come from and how could it have been so wrong, especially when all signs pointed to a terrorist attack?

And that’s where I think that you get a failure of the Romney campaign. This was an opportunity for Romney to make the case, to make a speech, to make at least an argument about how the policy of this administration, which essentially [is] apology and appeasement, has simply been tried and not worked. Instead, Romney made one statement about the Cairo embassy dispatch, in which I think that Romney was correct, but he was savagely attacked by the media over that even though it was vindicated when the Obama administration said the exactly the same thing. It was an awful statement a little bit later. …

The problem that Romney has is the fact that people don’t see him as a leader or sort of endowed stature when they see him. That was an opportunity that was missed and it remains missed. It’s a mystery why Romney can’t seize the moment on this.

The debate next week is on domestic policy, but this issue is so hot, he should bring into the debate if the communist moderator doesn’t. What he should do, more important, is schedule a major address, say, on the day before the debate or the day of, and use it to knee-cap Obama on the economy and tie into it his utter incompetency and naivete on foreign policy as well.

In other words, force the communist moderator to have to deal with these issues during the debate, and be prepared to go jugular during the debate, on offense. Kraut’s right on going large!

I disagree with Charles. I think we saw how the media reacted to Romney when he criticized the State Dept’s appology and the focus became Romney instead of Obama. I think Romney was smart to allow the time for the truth to come out and now the media can’t deny the Obama failures all the way around on this. Otherwise, the media would have been focused on Romney instead. Eventually, the media is going to have to play catch up on the facts and seems to me that’s happened before.

The LA Times — which will not release the Khaldi tapes — is such a reliable source too.

First of all, the headline doesn’t match the story — even within the story Romney stands by his criticism of the initial handling by the White House of the embassy statement and he says it is clearly it was a coordinated terrorist attack. All he said “differently” is it isn’t clear who knew what when. Jayzuz — some basic reading skills & knowing how to evaluate sources would go a long way.

And WTF with all the “What should Romney do” and “Why is Romney doing this and not that” b.s.? The focus should be on what Obama is doing/not doing. Otherwise you are playing the MSM game & helping Obama.

Of course, that may be the intent — it certainly the intent of the pundits who spend hours opining on Romney while ignoring the economic numbers (GDP is down to 1.3!).

Gee, Charles maybe you should ask your fellow journalists that question…Like you said Romney did step forward and he was attacked and Obama was protected. And as for Romney looking like a leader, there is the Bloomberg poll….we are hearing a lot about polls and according to that one Romney is now seen as more of a leader on this issue than Obama is.

I like Krauthammer, but I am getting tired of the gratuitous Romney bashing from both sides of the media…if they did their job it would not be necessary for Romney to do it for them.

And I also heard that Romney is calling Obama incompetent and Ryan is talking about a cover up…so maybe they have not been as silent on this as Krauthammer says they have been.

Poll: The presidential race is tight in Pennsylvania

Two percentage points separate President Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney in a state poll conducted for the Tribune-Review, even though the campaigns largely are ignoring Pennsylvania and concentrating on other battlegrounds.

Obama polled 47 percent to Romney’s 45 percent among likely Pennsylvania voters, with 6 percent of voters undecided and 44 days until Election Day, according to the survey by Susquehanna Polling & Research. The survey of 800 voters, conducted Sept. 18-20, has a margin of error of 3.46 percentage points.

cmsinaz on September 28, 2012 at 9:29 PM

In fact, Romney recently said:

In the battleground state of Colorado on Monday, Romney said Obama’s characterization of the recent unrest in the Middle East as a “bump in the road” belittled the gravity of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on September 11 that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Obama: We cannot ban blasphemy
Obama warns Iran at UN
Gergen: ‘It’s almost inexplicable’

“Bumps in the road?” Romney asked. “We had an ambassador assassinated. We had a Muslim Brotherhood member elected to the presidency of Egypt. Twenty thousand people have been killed in Syria. We have tumult in Pakistan and, of course, Iran is that much closer to having the capacity to build a nuclear weapon.”

Romney hammers Obama on ‘bumps in the road’

Ryan said during a bus tour through the swing state of Ohio that Obama’s policies “project weakness.”

“When you project American weakness – the superpower projecting weakness – that creates a vacuum, that creates a void,” Ryan added. “That void gets filled by people in countries who do not share our interests. It means our adversaries are that much more tempted to test us and our allies are much less likely to trust us, like Israel.”

Terrye on September 28, 2012 at 9:29 PM

Krauthammer is wrong. As much as this makes me want to bite nails, the average American does not care and would not care even if the media actually told them the entire story.

Obama is a disaster and Obama is winning. America has become apathetic and soft. This stuff will not move them.

AYNBLAND on September 28, 2012 at 9:29 PM

And I also heard that Romney is calling Obama incompetent and Ryan is talking about a cover up…so maybe they have not been as silent on this as Krauthammer says they have been.

Terrye on September 28, 2012 at 9:21 PM

If a Republican makes a coherent speech criticizing the President and the MSM doesn’t cover it, does it make a sound?

who is really undecided…seriously

cmsinaz on September 28, 2012 at 9:29 PM

“Obama polled 47 percent to Romney’s 45 percent among likely Pennsylvania voters, with 6 percent of voters undecided and 44 days until Election Day, according to the survey by Susquehanna Polling & Research. The survey of 800 voters, conducted Sept. 18-20, has a margin of error of 3.46 percentage points.”

A poll over a week old…good grief.

gumbyandpokey on September 28, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Well, idiot by the time the election rolls around the polls from today will be a lot more than a week old and yet you obsess over them with glee.

Right on Terrye!!

Romney was not the one who failed to protect our embassies and then lied when our people got killed.

idesign on September 28, 2012 at 8:49 PM

Nonsense. Zero WISHES Romney would weigh in with some tough talk and take the heat off of him and Shrillery. Read the article. Romney basically said he’ll wait for the investigation to find out if the barack administration is incompetent or lying. He’s handling this just right.

Tell me if I’m imagining it, or are there about 1/4 of the “normal” number of commenters at HotAir these days? I realize its a Friday night, but I think the traffic is WAY down.

BettyRuth on September 28, 2012 at 9:23 PM

I think people are getting tired of the Eyores and the trolls. Most likely its the trolls in particular spouting the same tired DNC talking points just fill space and don’t bring anything new to the table. It looks like there are about 40 active trolls, mobies, and concern trolls at this point.

AZfederalist on September 28, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Not trying to start anything other than wondering if anyone else is noticing it. I think we have some interesting threads, yet not a lot of comments. It makes me curious if the media/polls are accomplishing their goals of depressing our enthusiasm.

I have been researching a story from Reuters concerning the rescue mission where it was reported that one Marine was killed and one was wounded in a surprise attack.

I found a NYT story covering the same events filed a few days later. The NYT referred to the rescue mission personnel as employees of the State Department. The dozens of evacuees were CIA operatives, security officers and State Department employees. I think we now know we will not be hearing from these people anytime soon…well at least until after the election.

That is a very good question..in fact, if some of these guys would shut the hell up and listen to Romney and Ryan rather than just running their mouths they might learn something.

terrye,
i give you credit, normally I ignore people who show their ire for obama by trashing Romney.

rob verdi on September 28, 2012 at 9:38 PM

The debates will be a dog and pony show like all the press meetings. The questions will be edited by both sides and a moderator will be the referee. Obamas prompter will have his answers already printed. There will be no off the cuff questions because Obama would be a lunch to Mitt. All controlled by the media even in a fifth grade school room.

Hi Jackie: Thanks for the shout out the other night. Yes I was lurking cause my connection was spotty. You are special.

Everyone in HA: I explained to my youngest son the state of our country earlier tonight thusly:

When I was young the slow people rode the short bus Those who were up to speed rode the long bus, but now we are outnumbered and the slower amongst us ride the long bus and those in the know are in a vw beetle. He just shook his head and said dad I understand.

Maybe Romney is playing 3-dimensional chess and I’m all wet, but perhaps he doesn’t want anything overshadowing the debate next week and the economic numbers which look like are going to be terrible again.

The problem with this story is that there is no smoking gun (at least to the extent that the media can’t deflect) the media will cover Obama, report it as a shameless partisan attack from a desperate candidate behind in the polls. We’ll deal with it in the debates when it will naturally come up.
