Obama’s Romney-stand-in on Romney’s rhetorical skills: Oh, he “is a very good debater”

posted at 8:01 pm on September 28, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Er, has this downplaying-debate-expectations game maybe gotten just a little out of hand? H/t RCP, in the first few minutes:

Oh, please. Please, please, please. Give me 20 breaks, not just one. Mitt Romney debated against Ted Kennedy back in the ’90s. He debated one-on-one when he ran for governor. He probably turned his campaign around when he ran for governor and won the governorship because of what happened in that debate.

And listen to the Republicans, don’t listen to me, because nobody’s — I’m obviously partisan. But just this morning on “Morning Joe,” Newt Gingrich, who debated him many, many times, said that he got clobbered by him, that Mitt Romney, when he had to, down in Florida, literally turned things around; everybody saw that and knows that. …

So the fact is that Mitt Romney is a very good debater. He’s done a very good job at it. He’s practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced, and he’s been flying around with, you know, the person playing Obama on his airplane every minute. He’s gone away and done five debates in 48 hours up in New Hampshire or Vermont or somewhere. …

The president, on the other hand, has to be president every day. Just gave two speeches — I thought terrific speeches — in New York. He has been at the White House and dealing with a whole series of issues, Middle East and otherwise.

Mmm hmm. I mean, what with all of that presiding he’s been doing, it’s clear that the President has had hardly a spare moment for such trivial things as debate practice, I’m sure.

Obama is a lazy tool…he doesn’t have to practice since the MSM moderators will handle the debate for him. All he has to do is spout a bunch of empty-headed platitudes and lie a lot…no practice needed. Mission accomplished.

The Mediscare tactic has already worked like a charm for Obama/Biden…

gumbyandpokey on September 28, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Gumbyandpokey claims to be a conservative who wants Obama defeated, but all he does is post comments trying to boost Obama-Biden. Not sure what he, an Obama supporter, is trying to accomplish, but it seems that he’s wasting a lot of his free time here. Is this what some Obama supporters do during their time off?

If anyone doubts that gumbyandpokey is a Dem, all they need to do is google his screen name and see what he was posting before the WI recall election. He were concern trolling, telling us all how Walker was a terrible candidate and how he was going to lose. He pretends to be a Republican who supported Santorum strongly during the primary season, but there is not a single comment on this site from him supporting Santorum. No, every single one of his comments boosts Democrats and says how bad Republican candidates are and how we should just give up now.

Take a look here:

I’m in Wisconsin and he [Walker] will lose to Tom Barrett… … Walker is going to lose. I was just at a recent Walker fundraiser and many supporters are literally begging him to actually campaign with some fire and passion, but he wants to win or lose being the “nice guy.” There’s just nothing you can do when the candidate refuses to return fire and is literally a punching bag day after day after day after day.

It’s incredibly frustrating here and things are only going to get worse. And for some reason, Obama is just loved here, and I can’t figure out why. Romney shouldn’t spend one cent since WI is not in play.

The best case scenario is that Gov Walker wins by the skin of his teeth like Prosser did against Kloppenberg.

The biggest problem that Romney — and all of us — face concerning the debates is that the ones who will be moderating them will invariably tilt the table towards the left, and the average voter will know less about the true nature of the candidates than they did going in.

It’s a lose/lose proposition if you don’t have at least one fairly-moderated debate. (We won’t.)

hillbillyjim on September 28, 2012 at 8:21 PM

Wonderful, Obama will have all the inside information and intelligence on the Middle East and Romney will be completely in the dark. Furthermore, it doesn’t matter how the debate goes, the leftist media will declare Obama the winner. This will be a farce and the only positive outcome will be the network’s ratings.

This time, there are many, many Romney signs everywhere I go around here (and many supporting the Republican House and Senate picks as well), and this is strong, strong Democrat territory since before my birth. I was right back then and I’m right now that Romney was the worst possible candidate the GOP could have chosen. A rich guy completely out of touch, who can’t connect with the average voter.

I guarantee Santorum would be closer in the polls now than hapless Mitt.

And I was pretty prescient back then talking about how Obama would kick Romney’s a**! That is exactly what’s happening. I hope some of you had a chance to listen to Rush today. Even he knows it’s over. As does Stephen Hayes.

gumbyandpokey on September 28, 2012 at 8:57 PM

All this debate expectations & claiming that this is Romney’s “do or die” moment, his ONE shot to win this election with a Hail Mary is only to justify the October 4th meme they are getting ready to roll out that, for the 10th week in a row “ROMNEY LOST THE ELECTION!” and might as well just concede to Obama (btw, that meme has been going on since January 2012 — just ask George Will, Bill Kristol & Ben Domenech). No matter how much Obama stutters and ums & ahs his way through the debate, Romney will have to be the 2nd coming of Clarence Darrow at the Scopes Monkey Trial for the MSM to call the debate a “draw” and tweak their stories to “Romney didn’t do enough to turn the tide in his favor.”

So I’m telling everyone: don’t stress out, Obama’s going to lose on 11/6 anyway. Need proof? Go fill you car with gas and then go to the supermarket and buy a weeks worth of groceries for a family of 4.

According to Michael Lewis (http://www.vanityfair.com/online/daily/2012/09/barack-obama-michael-lewis), who was “embedded” with Mr. Obama for six months, Mr. Obama has been preparing for a debate with Mr. Romney since summer.

The president’s schedule on a recent summer day wasn’t quite as full as usual: 30 minutes with Hillary Clinton, another 30 with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, lunch with the vice president, a long talk with his secretary of agriculture to discuss the drought. He’d also hosted the Lady Bears of Baylor national-championship basketball team, done one TV interview, taped his weekly address, stopped in at a fund-raiser in a Washington hotel, and sat down, for the first time, to prepare for the coming debates with Mitt Romney. “The days that are challenging are not when you have a lot on your schedule,” he said. “Today was a little bit tougher than usual.” What made it tough was the bomb that had exploded on a Bulgarian tour bus, killing a bunch of Israeli tourists, and some reports out of Syria about civilians’ being murdered.

Mr. Obama met the Lady Bears of Baylor, and the Bulgarian bus was bombed, on July 18, 2012.

So poor Mr. Obama has been preparing for these debates for a bit more than two months.

unclesmrgol on September 28, 2012 at 9:10 PM

Romney must be prepared for the “Does your dog still ride on top of the car?”, “How many oversea accounts do you have?” questions. Those will comprise most of what he has to deal with. No one will dare mention the economies crappy statistics or the Islamic terrorists killing our staff or Obama’s endorsement of Islamic blasphemy laws.

What will you guys do when the election is called for Obama as soon as coverage begins and Ohio goes for the President?

gumbyandpokey on September 28, 2012 at 9:18 PM

So, public polls to the contrary, Obama is campaigning like he is losing badly, while Romney is campaigning like he is winning handily.

Count to 10 on September 28, 2012 at 9:18 PM

He certainly is. But at least Kerry ran a campaign like he wanted to win and ran a close race, neither of which can be said about Romney.

gumbyandpokey on September 28, 2012 at 8:12 PM

Yeah, lying about your military career and fellow serviceman certainly meant he wanted to win. Too bad for this lying sack of cr@p the American people are smarter than that.

ccrosby on September 28, 2012 at 9:18 PM

If I were Romney I would say something like this:

“I have experience rescuing failing companies as a businessman and rescuing an Olympics in crisis and one thing I’ve learned is that in everyone of those situations there was a guy who gave me plenty of excuses about why things didn’t get done, who had no shortage of people to blame for leaving them with a mess, and they always assured me that no one can do any better. They had no problems manufacturing excuses but couldn’t produce a solution worth a darn. And I’ll tell you right now, I’ve never regretted firing every one of those people and it was amazing how fast things improved once we got rid of them.”

gumbyandpokey on September 28, 2012 at 9:15 PM

You are a one-trick pokey.
You said exactly the same thing about Walker as you are saying about Romney…no passion, doesn’t want to win, no voter enthusiasm, everyone agrees, blah, blah, blah.

Busted.

Mitsouko on September 28, 2012 at 9:19 PM

The mouse scroll wheel certainly saves me time cruising past Zero’s propagandist.

“We never ate our dog Obama Hussein and when you were too busy stoned and stealing ice cream for your friends in Hawaii, waiting for your first of several quota admissions to college to go through, I was busy raising a family and working on my first million.

gumbyandpokey on September 28, 2012 at 9:18 PM

Joe Biden, is that you?

Mitsouko on September 28, 2012 at 9:21 PM

I just can’t wait to accept all my accolades and your apologies on election night when I’ve proven right.

I’m sure Rasmussen will move in Gallup’s direction next week, too.

gumbyandpokey on September 28, 2012 at 9:15 PM

A “conservative,” which you claim to be, wouldn’t be orgasmic at what he thinks is the prospect of an Obama victory, as you are, you effing liar.

You were sure about a Scott Walker loss in the spring, too.

And now you can read Rush Limbaugh’s mind, as well?

Right Mover on September 28, 2012 at 9:22 PM

How many lazy, low info voters will even watch the debates? They don’t want to do their own analysis, hell, they probably don’t even know how. They’ll just wait till Oprah or Whoopie or Jay Z or some air brained Hollywood actor or two-bit night show host to tell them to vote for Obama while they are on the SEIU bus on the way to the polls or signing their absentee ballots that their local Dem politico filled out for them.

natasha333 on September 28, 2012 at 9:40 PM

It’s not so much that they’re lowering expectations for Obama as they’re raising them for Romney. That way if Romney doesn’t meet their expectations (and he won’t), that’s all we’ll hear about until the next debate. I’m sure the headlines are already written.

29Victor on September 28, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Yesh, looks like the DNI is going to take the fall for Barry and Hill. Too bad we’re not stupid enough to believe this latest lie, and even if it were true, how and why did they get it so wrong? This excuse doesn’t exonerate the administration. This administration is the gang that couldn’t shoot straight – everything blows up in their faces. They’re that clueless.

Philly on September 28, 2012 at 9:47 PM

Kerry’s standing in for Romney? LOL, that’s too good. And fitting as well.

Good work, bluegill.

Right Mover on September 28, 2012 at 8:40 PM

Since bluegill’s so good at dredging up old comments, maybe he/she/it can find a comment of mine in which I support Obama, since he she it is always referring to me as an “Obama supporter”. Come on, bluegill. Got anything?

Prediction: by this time next week, Obama opens up a 6 point lead in the RCP average. Just being realistic.

Count to 10 on September 28, 2012 at 9:18 PM

No, what you’re seeing is a Democrat campaigning to win, and a squish campaigning like it’s some friendly wager on the back nine. Where’s that Death Star, off course?

ddrintn on September 28, 2012 at 9:55 PM

The only way they can win is by making sure everyone knows how absolutely terrible he is, how absolutely miniscule his achievements and abilities are, how pathetic and low his intelligence, how wrongsided his beliefs… until that bar is buried inside that hole that is the economy, we are expecting too much from the man and cannot possibly expect him to win an election that everyone in the media agrees was won weeks ago.

OT – But how did you come up with your nic?

My reason for asking is that it is very similar to the name in which the city that I live…probabaly shouldn’t put that out there, with the drones and all.

Just curious…

ccrosby on September 28, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Mitt Romney – vs. – a dried-up piece of commie dog caca? Yeah, I think Romney is going to do just fine.

Pork-Chop on September 28, 2012 at 11:16 PM

Kerry is such a turd.

Hey, I was told there would be no palindromes here!

drunyan8315 on September 28, 2012 at 11:37 PM

Obama’s going to lose anyway.

Dark Star on September 28, 2012 at 8:51 PM

And after he does, gird your loins people.

chewmeister on September 28, 2012 at 8:55 PM

I dearly hope Dark Star is right and I am willing to deal with the consequences of what Barry will wrought after a Barry defeat.

My fear is that Barry will win , but my stance is : I’ll do my very best to uphold my end in trying to throw Barry out, I’ll hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

cptacek on September 29, 2012 at 12:52 AM

The president, on the other hand, has to be president every day. Just gave two speeches — I thought terrific speeches — in New York. He has been at the White House and dealing with a whole series of issues, Middle East and otherwise.

Already with the excuses for Obama getting his arse handed to himself by Romney during the debates, eh?
