Kirsten Powers: More Americans will be put in danger if the media doesn’t start challenging the White House on Libya

posted at 6:41 pm on September 28, 2012 by Allahpundit

A few reporters have stepped up, of course. Eli Lake at Newsweek has done a bang-up job, CNN has stuck with the story all week, Tapper had a solid report last night about who knew what and when. But perhaps we’re asking too much from the media generally; there are, after all, Romney gaffes to be covered. And if there’s one thing that America wants and needs from its media right now, it’s more navel-gazing horse-race election dreck.

Not KP, though. Good lord, I think she’s gone rogue:

There are so many unanswered questions, not just about Libya, but also about Cairo. Who is it that Rice thinks “widely disseminated” this “movie”? Surely she can’t believe that the Egyptian Coptic Christian who made the video had the capacity or even desire to put it in the hands of the people who did the inciting. Also, has the administration noticed that the mob in Cairo, so spontaneously upset about the video, just happened to be carrying an Islamist flag to hoist over our embassy? On 9/11. What a massive coincidence.

Also, where did Rice get her very detailed information about the attack in Libya? She referred to the attackers as “a small handful of heavily armed mobsters” who merely took advantage of a growing protest over the video, a protest that now appears never to have occurred, as was reported three days before her appearances. The administration is careful to point out that Rice couched everything she said as being the best assessment at the time. Fine. But where did that assessment come from and how could it have been so wrong, especially when all signs pointed to a terrorist attack?

We know now that before the attacks on 9/11 that killed 3,000 Americans, more attention should have been paid to attacks against the U.S. overseas. These were warnings of what was to come. They say curiosity killed the cat. In this case, lack of curiosity on the part of the American media very well may kill more Americans.

In a different political environment, if Congress wasn’t back home campaigning for reelection and demands for answers from the top weren’t fated to be met with screeching about how the GOP is “politicizing terror” before the big vote, I think the House would already be moving towards holding hearings about what the White House knew. As it is, I wouldn’t expect them to pursue this even after election day; they’ll be consumed with hashing out a compromise on the Bush tax cuts and the sequester. This seems fated to end up off the public’s radar sooner rather than later. Like the man said, a bump in the road.

Here’s KP on Wednesday’s “Special Report” previewing her Newsweek op-ed today. Click the image to watch. Exit quotation from Mike Huckabee: “This White House has been discredited and its credibility, certainly the promises of transparency, have been completely decimated by their actions.”

KP’s going to be Republican by the 2016 presidential election, and perhaps before.

She’s got to be tired of defending the indefensible.

I called her a doctrinaire liberal and basically she is. She also seems courageous but usually lazy.

On those few occasions when she deserted the Dem talking points in the past, everyone around her at Fox seemed to raise their eyebrows.

Since she has a spouse with exceptional knowledge of this issue, my guess is that she has had the overall quality of her conclusions improved on this cluster of issues.

However, if you have been watching her, you had to catch her shoddy preparation for Fox appearances and the occasional offering of fairly dumb or ill considered remarks.

So we will see. I think MSNBC will recruit her before she becomes a conservative.

Win, Win!

Leaving Fox for that hollowed out tree, she could raise the average IQ and quality of discourse of both networks.

IlikedAUH2O on September 29, 2012 at 7:11 AM

Good for her. Unfortunately, most Americans of voting age simply don’t care and behave much like B.F. Skinner’s pigeons . . . they just keep pecking at the door waiting for the next reward to fall out.

rplat on September 29, 2012 at 7:42 AM

Kirsten Powers is an amateur. She operates solely on her appearance and is an otherwise run-of-the-mill journalist. Why HA gives her ANY juice is beyond me.

Sounds to me like AP needs a date other than his right-hand.

A Pulitzer awaits the intrepid investigative journalist who exposes the truth of what happened and the media’s complicity in covering it up. It’s way, way bigger than Watergate.

bobcalco on September 29, 2012 at 9:35 AM

I like her. I don’t usually agree with her but I think she has principles. She and Geraldine Ferraro were the only Feminists I could still respect after the awful and hypocritical treatment the Palin women received from the left.

I am for anyone in the press right now that will do their job and call on their peers to do their jobs. It is good that she is laying any future krap that may happen at the feet of the MSM if they keep their mouths shut to help Obama. Good for her. I agree.

3 Democrats Charge the American Press with CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT BEHAVIOR

Mutnodjmet on September 28, 2012 at 11:43 PM

Great article… and you can add me to the list of those that would love to see the MSM brought up on charges.
Caddell is right. The media has crossed yet another line by refusing to report the truth to the American people about this administrations foreign policy failures. Lives have been lost as a direct result of those who have proven themselves inadequate in being able to protect American citizens. If the State Dept. was not able to correctly assess the risk to American personnel in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11…how can we possibly feel any more confident in the ability of this government to make careful and proper decisions regarding the safety of U.S. citizens anywhere? And the press has empowered themselves by deciding this truth is not important for the American people to know.
It is past the point of the press being merely biased. It has reached the point of reckless endangerment.

lynncgb on September 29, 2012 at 9:38 AM

AP: I really think Pat Caddell’s recent rant on the danger the media is becoming to American democracy will strike a nerve. Please feature it on HA.

bobcalco on September 29, 2012 at 9:39 AM

We can no more blame Obama for this than we could blame our 5 year old for the mortgage payment being late. It’s all above his pay grade.

AP is definitely left handed… at least that what the guy to the left of him in the circle jerk said anyway.

The NPR newsroom has apparently lost the L, I, B, Y, and A keys on the computers they use to compose stories. This morning they even had a long interview with a reporter babe of theirs who is coming home after years covering the middle east, and throughout several long anecdotes about the changes there in recent history, neither she nor the host spoke the L-word, or the O-word. F-word them all.

Powers is that rarest of leftists, she actually is sane, if mistaken at times, and she doesn’t hate her country. She also does things like this, not the first time.

Unfortunately, the Pulitzer committee is dominated by Leftists. If it wasn’t then the guy who uncovered the Journolist Conspiracy to steer the news in a pre-defined manner, would’ve won that prize for uncovering what everybody already suspected.

Mahdi on September 29, 2012 at 10:40 AM

By the way, can dispense with the crap that uploading the video was what got the guy arrested.

He was on probation for fraud, namely using an alias to scam money from people over the internet. Was told, “Don’t do that no more!”

So to make his mediocre, middle school drama club video he went raising money…using an alias…over the internet. So the Po-po went got him because he violated his probation by raising money using an alias, not for uploading a video.

Don’t be fooled by her occasional forays into journalism. KP will quietly and dutifully don her Obama kneepads on November 6th and do her duty for her black messiah.

SKYFOX on September 29, 2012 at 10:55 AM

CNN has stuck with the story all week,

CNN has done more than that. They have reported this as a terror attack since 9/12, even as our side followed the meme.

faraway on September 29, 2012 at 10:57 AM

Hate to say it and I wish it weren’t true but today the mainstream media largely controls the national debate. If they don’t want to talk about it because it hurts their preferred candidate they will simply ignore it and it will soon go away. The low information American voters will soon forget for the most part. I see Obama getting reelected at this point and it is breaking my heart.

steel guy on September 29, 2012 at 11:03 AM

steel guy on September 29, 2012 at 11:03 AM

The real problem with KP isn’t any dishonesty or stupidity. It is that her axioms are set by a corrupt and insular source.

It has been having its way since President Nixon.

The whole country should see this.

Obama v. Romney is far less important.

IlikedAUH2O on September 29, 2012 at 11:12 AM

I wish I could figure out how to contact Jim Lehrer to remind him that the future of our country is at stake and he’d better ask the big Zero some important and in depth questions about the economy. And ditto for the other debate mediators. The debates will be their last chance to re-establish any credibility.

Love me some Kirsten. As a old lady economic conservative, I have many rational, honest, honorable liberal friends. Powers reminds me of them. Most libs and conservs in the media used be be that way too. Leaning a bit, sometimes a lot, this way or the other politically but essentially truth based and open-minded. I’ve never seen anything like the current medial sell-out group of lib journalists in my long life. I saw it start when the conservs took back the house during the Clinton presidency. It really took off under George Bush and, by now, the wheels have completely come off. It used to be that even with political bias, most journalists made at least some attempt to uphold a sense of journalistic honor and fair play. No more. Most of the old media have become propagandists. It’s so cool to see one like Kirsten willing willing to deal in facts and reality. Yay her!

limmo on September 29, 2012 at 12:38 PM

This matter should be treated in any jovial way. This is a huge scandal, one relating to American deaths and our Administration’s blatant lying of those deaths. Which exposes the ludicrous bias of the media.

When a lefty wacko like Powers gets the smelling salts from this, you should know it’s bad.

This should be pressed non-stop through election day, and legally afterward.

Don’t turn this into another of Hot Air’s “Daily Outrages” that quickly fades the next time another headline pops up.

Saltyron on September 29, 2012 at 12:39 PM

A liberal media flunky that is actually right about something.

I never would have believed it if I didn’t hear and see it for myself.

Members of the MSM have gotten people killed by their actions, and in other instances allowed people to die by their inaction. In one case, a ‘reporter’ covering an airline hijacking let the world know the pilot was sneaking information to authorities.

The hijackers murdered the pilot when they found out from the report.

In another, and I watched this on TV myself, a man called a station to announce he was going to set himself on fire for some protest or other. When the man began dousing his pants with lighter fluid, the report and his cameraman simply watched. And the reporter kept watching even as the man struck a match and started himself on fire.

Not a word to try stopping a man from dying a horrible death.

Those of you who claim KP will revert to form on Nov. 6 are just as correct, far as I’m concerned. Truth, when liberals allow it into their heads, goes only so far. The liberalism comes first and foremost, with truth only accepted to a point if it can’t be blocked out entirely.

A free press was supposed to be the final fortress and guarantor of our liberty. Instead, today, they are part of the machine that seeks to enslave us.

After this election, no matter who wins, we need to find a way to somehow punish the liberals in the media who are bigger enemies than the politicians we end up electing.

Liam on September 29, 2012 at 12:48 PM

Bob Dornan just dropped a salvo on Fox News. He says we are about to find out exactly how, where, and when our embassador and the others died in Libya. He said that Stevens was attacked, he was dragged out of a window and into the streets where he was tortured and murdered. He said the three others died several miles away from Stevens location – four hours later. They were in a protracted firefight and fended off terrorists for a few hours prior to being murdered. He did not disclose the details of their deaths.

Oh my. BOOM!

Philly on September 29, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Surely, an autopsy was done, and we need to know the results. Was the rumor of rape confirmed? What exactly what the cause of death? We need to know and we need to know now.

limmo on September 29, 2012 at 1:22 PM

I agree with BobCalaco @ 9:39. Pat Caddell’s speech at the Accuracy in Media, should be a feature at Hot Air ASAP. Everyone should watch the full length version of the speech. It is most refreashing to hear. The U.S. is at a tipping point, and the media has it’s finger on the scale. At least someone gets it, too bad it is a Democrat. Rommney Campaign, RNC, MSM, take his advice, or we all go down in flames.

How disgusting is that. We fall hook, line and sinker for their rhetorical deceit, lacking either the intelligence or spine to contest it.

The regime’s story is not “evolving”. It’s shamelessly shifting with the wind, lying to CYA.

When (not if) American cities vanish into radioactive rubble thanks to Iranian nukes…

Sadly, I think Tel Aviv will be the most likely target. I say “sadly” because there is no way in hell this president would ever approve a nuclear retaliation for an attack on the U.S. much less Israel.

He simply has no courage to protect America or Americans, secretly he probably believes we deserve to be nuked and taken down a peg or two. His initial “Apology Tour” shows that he views Americans as part of the problem rather than the solution.

Are Iran’s leaders patient enough to wait until they have more than one nuclear weapon before they decide to use it/them?

While there is no doubt in my mind that Iran will deploy nuclear weapons when they get them I’m not sure the wacko Imams will wait until they have several weapons. And how will they deliver the weapons? I think Israel’s air defenses are adequate to take out both aircraft and unmanned missiles, what does that leave? A boat in Tel Aviv harbor? Haifa is Israel largest port.

If Israel defeats or prevents a nuclear attack from Iran will Israel responds with nukes? Unless the President threaten Israel with American attacks to forestall a Israeli nuclear response – and I can see him make such a threat – I can’t imagine that Israel wouldn’t reply with nukes.

I suspect that Israel’s nuclear arsenal will survive an initial attack and will respond accordingly. Geographically Israel is the more vulnerable of the two countries. One good nuke would almost destroy Israel. How many weapons would be enough to get Iran to sue for peace? 5-10? 10 – 40 million Iranians?

We are probably entering a dark age not of our making but exacerbated by our feckless president.
