Obama ad: “Time for a new economic patriotism”

Yesterday, Mitt Romney released a one-minute ad in which he spoke directly into the camera about the failures of Obama’s economic policy — and it looks like Team Obama followed suit (upping the ante with a two-minute ad spot, mmm hmm), having the president talk in a face-to-face format about his economic plan for the next four years. I suppose we’re meant to believe that this is what “giving specifics” on an “economic plan” looks like:

Now, Governor Romney believes that with that even bigger tax cuts for the wealthy and fewer regulations on Wall Street all of us will prosper. In other words he’d double down on the same trickle down policies that led to the crisis in the first place. So what’s my plan?

Enough with the big, fat “the same policies that got us here in the first place” lie. It’s hogwash.

First, we create a million new manufacturing jobs and help businesses double their exports. Give tax breaks to companies that invest in America, not that ship jobs overseas.

Pardon me, but how is it that you’re going to create these million marvelous manufacturing jobs when you’ve only failed spectacularly so far? Because giving tax breaks, a.k.a. providing subsidies, a.k.a. picking economic winners and losers, for your preferred businesses does not create jobs. And enough with this relentless demonization of “shipping jobs overseas” — if doing so helps us to obtain goods and services more cheaply and efficiently, which it does, that can and does create jobs, because that means we all have more disposable income and thereby are all wealthier.

Second, we cut our oil imports in half and produce more American-made energy, oil, clean-coal, natural gas, and new resources like wind, solar and bio-fuels—all while doubling the fuel efficiencies of cars and trucks.

No. Your administration has been steadily and purposefully impairing Americans’ ability to tap into our own abundant natural resources and blocking business opportunities for natural gas; clean coal is an expensive and costly nightmare; and your record on coercing Americans into using more wind/solar/biofuels — which currently hold exactly zero serious potential as viable, widespread substitutes for oil and gas — has failed tremendously, as have your many “green jobs” initiatives.

Third, we insure that we maintain the best workforce in the world by preparing 100,000 additional math and science teachers. Training 2 million Americans with the job skills they need at our community colleges. Cutting the growth of tuition in half and expanding student aid so more Americans can afford it.

Is this code for “more stimulus”, which translates into spending even more money we don’t have? Who is going to perform and pay for all of this additional training, exactly? Oh, let me guess — the federal government. Whoop-de-doo. And does anybody in your august administration realize that subsidizing student aid so that more Americans can afford going to college is going to hike demand — which is going to make tuition even more expensive? You can’t have it both ways, and hey, it might be nice of all of those college graduates could find jobs and maybe become capable of paying off all of that debt.

Fourth, a balanced plan to reduce our deficit by four trillion dollars over the next decade on top of the trillion in spending we’ve already cut, I’d ask the wealthy to pay a little more. And as we end the war in Afghanistan let’s apply half the savings to pay down our debt and use the rest for some nation building right here at home.

Even if I believed that you were going to suddenly reverse your trend of growing more than trillion-dollar annual deficits (which, given all that government spending implied above, I don’t), taxing the wealthy more isn’t going to necessarily increase revenue by much — and the damage to our economy is going to be infinitely worse.

It’s time for a new economic patriotism. Rooted in the belief that growing our economy begins with a strong, thriving middle class. Read my plan. Compare it to Governor Romney’s and decide for yourself. Thanks for listening.

When they came for me and all I had, no one else said anything because they were ECONOMICALLY PATRIOTIC.

Never have the words of someone with so much power been so inconsequential, so divorced from reality, so meaningless. In recent history we’ve seen the grand plans of Stalin’s Five Year Plan, Mao’s Great Leap Forward, Pol Pot’s “Year Zero”. Like Obama, they had grand visions they attempted to force on the population, rather than allowing people to develop at their own pace.

How can Obama still be afloat maintaining his line of BS? By borrowing over a trillion dollars every year, year after year. We’ll all pay dearly for that, soon, and all suffer.

I’m still waiting for somebody, ANYBODY, to explain to me how the housing market and financial sector collapsed and brought down the rest of the economy, because taxes were to low….and how raising taxes will bring us back to prosperity. I am still pissed about Palin’s “darn right it was greed” that caused the housing crisis mess comment in the debate with Joe Biden. McCain didn’t/couldn’t explain it either, and I have yet to hear a politician make the case for how it actually happened. Instead, they let everyone pin it on the republicans.

How refreshing would it be for Romney to wait for Obama to talk about “I inherited this mess…” and then hit him back with: “well, this mess was caused by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, liberal lending standards, etc, loose money policy, etc.; and oh by the way, weren’t you and Hillary and Biden all senators at one point?”

The fact that 49% of us can be enslaved by the other 51% is a powerful reason for working very hard to restore federalism and forcefully take power away from the federal government. If the federal government hadn’t usurped so much power from the states I don’t think we’d feel as threatened by Obama as we do.

I hope that we have a lot of Red state governors ready to stand up to the Feds and fight to restore the Constitutional balance of power.

Do we NEED 100,000 math and science teachers? Is there any evidence at all to suggest that there are bunches of schools who don’t have enough math and science teachers?

My small town has all the math and science teachers we need. We have a 20 student per teacher ratio right now. What we do need is auto mechanics. There are three shops in town who need mechanics and they can’t find any to hire. There aren’t any out there. Three of four good paying jobs here that aren’t being filled but we keep sending everyone to college, because why again?

And he evidentally doesn’t know that if he cuts the rate of tuition growth in half, tuition will still double in 10 years. Is he fine with that?

This is right out of the Soviet Union and Stalinism. When you fuse “patriotism” with “economic activity,” you create a condition where those who get in the way of the economic plan are – in fact – not only UNPATRIOTIC – but TRAITORS.

My assumption is that if a school district, a local entity, thought t needed more then it would hire them.

Obama seems to want to federalize the teachers in this country and to make school districts dependent on federal dollars for their salaries.

If the GD federal government didn’t consume every dollar in sight then other taxing levels of government could raise their own revenues. Instead the fed crowds out everyone else and then dispenses those dollars back with strings attached creating even more dependency.

It’s not so much a political thing, as a cultural thing. For years, all I have heard is that if you don’t go to college you are a loser. Bunk! (read “Shopcraft is soulcraft”). Maybe not everyone should be saddled with debt and work behind a desk. There are a lot of good careers out there that do not require college training, but need technical training.

So-called trickle down economics did not lead to the recession, it was the overspending, ballooning debt and deficit, the credit collapse, along with the housing market tanking and the derivatives exchange blowing up. Oh, and currency and interest rate manipulation, don’t forget that. I didn’t need to watch anymore from him to figure out Obama is sticking to the same false, simplistic narratives that appeal to his gullible base. I don’t see too many other people buying his malarkey. The problem is, there are enough people out there that you can fool all of the time.

Now, Governor Romney believes that with that even bigger tax cuts for the wealthy and fewer regulations on Wall Street all of us will prosper. In other words he’d double down on the same trickle down policies that led to the crisis in the first place. So what’s my plan?

I went to his website to ‘compare’ his ‘plan’ against Romney – what a bunch of flotsam. It is basically the political equivalent of the classic ‘how to become a millionaire’ – First, get a million dollars.

It was little more than rhetorical platitudes and a comparison based on the ‘non-partisan Tax Policy Center’ report that Obama quotes like Bill Murray in Caddyshack talking about meeting the Dalai Lama. ‘And the non-partisan TPC says Romney will raise taxes on the middle class, so – I got that goin’ for me.’

If I read one more thing that regurgitates that bit of speculative fiction I think my head will explode. And if I have to hear how the TPC, a joint effort of liberal think tanks the Brookings Institute and The Urban Institute (which was started by LBJ), is non-partisan I may go postal.

My small town has all the math and science teachers we need. We have a 20 student per teacher ratio right now. What we do need is auto mechanics. There are three shops in town who need mechanics and they can’t find any to hire. There aren’t any out there. Three of four good paying jobs here that aren’t being filled but we keep sending everyone to college, because why again?

And he evidentally doesn’t know that if he cuts the rate of tuition growth in half, tuition will still double in 10 years. Is he fine with that?

People must be seriously economically illiterate. Because we are headed for serious economic and societal destabilization if we continue down this path. The people won’t like the results, but they won’t understand it either.

I hope during the debate Gov. Romney will respond to these lies with something like “Mr. President, stop lying about what I believe! I believe no such thing!”. Or maybe, “Mr. President, please allow me to correct you on this important point because you have it so wrong and have been going around the country mischaracterizing my positions.” Or maybe “Mr. President, only a fool would believe that tax cuts for the rich and reducing regulations will fix this economy. And no one has ever thought I was a fool. You don’t believe it, I don’t believe it, the American people don’t believe it. So why are you trying to fool the voters?”
